Swipe file
A curated collection of ads, copy and creative examples saved for reference and inspiration when making new marketing.
A swipe file is a collection of marketing examples you save for future reference. The term comes from copywriting, where writers kept folders of effective sales letters and ads to study. Today, a swipe file for paid social usually contains saved copies of ads, landing pages, emails and product pages that caught your attention.
Why keep one
- Faster briefing: instead of describing an idea in words, you can show a creator or designer a reference.
- Pattern spotting: when you save enough examples, recurring structures for hooks, offers and layouts become obvious.
- Less blank-page time: starting from a set of proven structures is easier than starting from nothing.
How to organise it
A swipe file is only useful if you can find things again. Common ways to group examples include:
- by format, such as UGC, static, carousel or demonstration;
- by ad angle or emotional trigger;
- by funnel stage, from cold prospecting to retargeting;
- by brand or category.
Add a short note on why you saved each item. A note such as "strong first line" or "good use of reviews" makes the file far more useful months later.
A note on use
A swipe file is for inspiration and learning, not copying. Reuse structures and principles, then write your own copy and create your own visuals.
