Creative strategist

A marketer who uses research and performance data to decide what ads to make, writing briefs and guiding creative testing.

A creative strategist decides what ads a brand should make and why. The role sits between performance data, customer research and creative production. Rather than editing videos or designing graphics themselves, creative strategists usually research the audience, form hypotheses, write briefs for creators and designers, and analyse results to inform the next round.

Typical responsibilities

  • Researching customers through reviews, surveys, support tickets and social comments.
  • Studying competitor and category ads to understand which ad angles, hooks and formats are common.
  • Writing creative briefs and scripts for UGC creators, editors and designers.
  • Planning creative testing roadmaps.
  • Reading metrics such as hook rate, hold rate, CTR and CPA to judge what worked.
  • Documenting learnings so the team builds on them.

Creative strategist versus media buyer

A media buyer manages campaigns, budgets and delivery. A creative strategist focuses on the ads themselves. In smaller teams, one person often does both.

How PixelSpyer helps

Competitive research is a large part of the role. In PixelSpyer you can search the ad library, follow competitors with the brand tracker and save references into boards with the swipe file feature. AI Studio and the ad hook generator can help turn research into first drafts of copy and hooks, which you can then refine for your own brand.
