Ad glossary
Offer
The complete package a customer receives for taking action, including product, price, bonuses, guarantees and terms.
In direct-response marketing, the offer is everything a customer gets in exchange for buying, and the terms under which they get it. It includes the product itself, but also the price, any discount, bonuses, bundles, shipping terms, guarantees and deadlines. Two stores selling the same product can have very different offers.
Elements of an offer
- Price and discount: a percentage off, a fixed amount off or a sale price.
- Quantity deals: buy two get one free, or a lower price per unit in a multipack.
- Bonuses: a free gift, accessory or sample with purchase.
- Risk reversal: money-back guarantees, free returns or extended warranties.
- Shipping: free or faster delivery, sometimes above a threshold.
- Urgency: a genuine deadline or limited stock, used honestly.
Why it matters for ads
A strong offer can lift CTR and conversion rate without any change to the creative, because it gives people a concrete reason to act now. A weak or unclear offer can sink a well-made ad. Many teams test offers alongside ad angles and hooks.
Balance with margin
Every discount or bonus has a cost. Before launching an offer, check how it affects AOV, contribution margin and your break-even ROAS. An offer that converts well but leaves no profit is not a winner.
Keep it honest
Make sure discounts are calculated against genuine previous prices and that urgency claims, such as countdowns or limited stock messages, are true. Consumer protection rules in the EU and UK cover misleading pricing and pressure-selling claims.
