Creative testing

A structured process for trying new ad concepts, hooks and formats to find which ones drive the best results before scaling them.

Creative testing is the process of systematically launching new ads to learn which ideas, messages and formats perform best. On platforms where targeting is increasingly automated, creative is one of the biggest levers advertisers still control, so many brands treat testing as an ongoing routine rather than an occasional project.

What to test

It helps to separate big swings from small tweaks:

  • Concepts and ad angles: the core reason someone should buy, such as convenience, price, status or a specific problem solved.
  • Formats: UGC, founder videos, static images, carousels and demonstrations.
  • Hooks: the first line or first seconds of the ad.
  • Copy and offers: headlines, primary text, discounts and bundles.

New concepts usually teach you more than small variations of the same ad.

How teams structure it

There is no single correct method. Common approaches include:

  • A dedicated testing campaign with a fixed budget, where new ads run before winners move to a scaling campaign.
  • Adding new ads into an existing campaign and letting the delivery system allocate spend.
  • Formal A/B tests using Meta's experiment tools when you need a cleaner comparison.

In practice

  • Decide in advance which metric defines a winner, such as CPA or ROAS, and how much spend you need before judging.
  • Use leading indicators like hook rate to diagnose why an ad worked or failed.
  • Keep a log of what you tested and what you learned so insights compound.
  • Look outside your account for ideas; the PixelSpyer library shows how other brands approach the same problems.
