When Ethan finally came home, I smelled her perfume before I saw his face. Three years of marriage. Three years of waiting in his empty penthouse. And he walked in with lipstick on his collar and another woman's name on his phone. A week ago, his assistant had accidentally forwarded me an email meant for Ethan's personal account. It was a hotel reservation. Presidential suite. Two guests. Champagne and roses included. The name on the second guest line wasn't mine. It was Sienna Moore. I'd read the name and felt nothing at first. Then I scrolled down. Attached were photos — Sienna draped over Ethan at a charity gala I hadn't been invited to. Sienna laughing in his car. Sienna wearing a diamond bracelet I'd never seen before. The email thread went back four months. Four months of secret dinners, hotel bookings, and gifts purchased from accounts I had no access to. I closed my laptop that day and sat perfectly still for a long time. Now Ethan stood in the foyer, adjusting his cufflinks, his expression the same controlled mask he always wore around me — polite, distant, like I was a tenant rather than his wife. "We need to talk," he said. Those four words. Every woman knows what they mean. He walked past me into the living room and poured himself a whiskey without offering me anything. "I want a divorce, Anna." He said it the way he'd say "cancel my 3 o'clock." Flat. Efficient. Already decided. I sat across from him, my hands folded in my lap. "Why?" "Because this marriage was a transaction, and the transaction is complete. Your grandmother's hospital bills have been paid. My family got the merger they wanted. There's no reason to continue pretending." Pretending. Three years of cooking meals he never ate, attending events where he introduced me as "a family friend," sleeping alone in a bed meant for two — and he called it pretending. "Is it because of Sienna Moore?" His glass paused halfway to his lips. A flicker of surprise — gone in an instant. "Who told you about her?" "Does it matter?" Ethan set his glass down and leaned forward, his jaw tight. "Sienna is... different. She understands my world. She grew up in it. She doesn't need me to explain why I work until midnight or fly to London on six hours' notice." Translation: she's rich, she's glamorous, and she doesn't wait around like a forgotten housewife. "And I do need those explanations?" I asked quietly. "You need things I can't give you, Anna. Attention. Affection. A present husband." He almost sounded sorry. Almost. "You deserve someone who actually wants this kind of life." The kindness in his voice was the cruelest part. He wasn't angry. He wasn't conflicted. He'd already moved on — probably months ago. I looked at the man I had quietly loved for three years and realized he had never once looked back. "Fine," I said. "I'll sign the papers." His eyebrows lifted slightly. He'd expected resistance. Tears, maybe. Begging. Instead, I stood and smoothed my dress. "But I need one thing returned to me first." "Name it." "My mother's necklace. The sapphire pendant I gave you on our wedding night. You said you'd keep it safe." Something shifted behind his eyes — the smallest crack in his composure. "I'll have it sent to you." "No. I want it in person. Tomorrow." He nodded once, already reaching for his phone — probably texting Sienna the good news. I walked to the bedroom, closed the door, and pressed my back against it. No tears. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But my hands were shaking. Not from heartbreak — from the realization that I had given three years of my life to a man who saw me as nothing more than a contract clause. And the worse realization? He had no idea who I actually was.
