Two seasons. Two worlds. Just a few days ago I was standing high above the valleys, surrounded by fresh snow, ice and glaciers. Overnight, winter had returned to the high Alps. The mountains felt quiet, untouched and almost timeless. It was one of those moments where reality feels a little surreal. Now I’m back home, where temperatures are well above 30°C. Looking out of the window, it’s hard to believe that only a short journey away, winter was still holding on. But despite the fresh snow, there was something impossible to ignore. After following these glaciers for almost a decade, I could clearly see how much they have changed. The winter had brought very little snow, leaving vast areas of bare ice exposed far earlier than they should be. Crevasses that used to remain hidden until much later in the season were already open, and the retreat of the glaciers has become impossible to overlook. Working on Lights, Shadows, and Glaciers has always been about the beauty of these landscapes, the interplay of light, shadow and ice. But over the years it has also become a quiet documentation of change. Every visit reveals another subtle difference. Every year the landscape looks a little different. That is probably why I keep returning. Not only because these mountains are breathtaking, but because they remind me how precious and fragile they really are.
