The divorce papers hit the dinner table right between my plate and my wine glass. "Sign them." My husband Derek didn't even look up from his phone. "My lawyer says we can finalize by Friday if you cooperate." I stared at the documents, then at the woman sitting in MY chair at the head of MY table—Vanessa, my best friend of twelve years, her hand resting casually on her belly with the kind of possessive pride that told me everything. "She's pregnant," Derek said flatly, as if announcing the weather. "Three months. We need the house for the baby." The house. The six-bedroom colonial I'd bought with my own money. The house whose deed bore my name and mine alone. "You want me to sign over my house," I repeated slowly, "to the woman who's been sleeping with my husband." Derek's mother, Gloria, emerged from the kitchen carrying a tray of coffee—using my imported Italian espresso machine, in my hand-painted mugs. "Don't be dramatic, Serena. You should be grateful Derek is being so generous. Most men wouldn't even offer a settlement to a barren wife." Barren. The word she'd weaponized against me for six years, ever since the fertility specialist told us the problem was actually Derek's low sperm count. But somehow, in this family's twisted narrative, the failure was always mine. "The settlement is more than fair," Derek continued, sliding a single sheet toward me. "You get the Honda, your clothes, and fifty thousand dollars. Vanessa and I get the house, the vacation property, and the investment accounts." I almost laughed. The investment accounts alone were worth fourteen million dollars. But none of them knew that. To the Blackwell family, I was just Serena Chen—the quiet, plain wife who worked some boring "desk job" at a tech company. They had no idea I was the tech company. "Sign it tonight," Gloria added, her voice carrying the same imperious tone she'd used to order me around for seven years of marriage. "Vanessa is moving in tomorrow. We've already packed your things." I looked past her toward the foyer, where three garbage bags sat slumped against the wall. My clothes. My books. My life—stuffed into trash bags like refuse. "And if I don't sign?" I asked quietly. Derek finally looked up from his phone, his expression a mixture of irritation and contempt. "Then we do this the hard way. Dad's firm will bury you in legal fees. You can't afford to fight us, Serena. We both know you barely make sixty thousand a year." Vanessa spoke for the first time, her voice dripping with honeyed malice. "Just take the deal, babe. It's more than you deserve, honestly. You couldn't give him a child. I can." She rubbed her belly. "Sometimes the better woman wins." I looked at each of them—my husband, my best friend, my mother-in-law—and felt something ancient and cold crystallize inside my chest. "I'll need until Friday," I said softly, picking up the papers. Derek shrugged. "Friday. Then you're out." I walked to the foyer, picked up my three garbage bags, and stepped into the cold November night. As the door clicked shut behind me, I pulled out my phone and dialed the one number that could burn their world to the ground. "Margaret," I said when my CFO answered. "Initiate Protocol Nine. All of it." A pause. Then: "Are you sure? That will—" "Everything, Margaret. Start with his father's law firm." Because Derek Blackwell had just asked his wife—the secret founder and sole owner of a two-billion-dollar company—for a divorce. And he had absolutely no idea what was coming.
