A MESSAGE TO EVERY DACHSHUND, FRENCHIE, AND CORGI OWNER From a vet who has spent 20 years watching small dogs lose the use of their back legs. I'm writing this because almost every week I watch the same thing happen. An owner brings in their dog. The back legs are dragging. The dog can't get comfortable. And they tell me the same sentence I've heard a thousand times. "But he's been on the joint chews for years." I've examined hundreds of these dogs. I know exactly what is happening inside their backs and their joints. And I know most of it could have been slowed down. A lot of it could have been prevented. But almost none of these owners knew what to do before it got that far. So I am going to tell you what I tell every Dachshund, Frenchie, and Corgi owner who sits in my exam room, before their dog ever gets to that point. The reason your dog is at risk has a name It's the cushion in their back wearing away. Your dog's spine is a row of small bones, and between every two of them sits a soft cushion of cartilage and fluid. That cushion is what lets your dog bend, twist, jump on the couch, and run without it hurting. In a Dachshund, a Frenchie, a Corgi, that long low body puts more strain on those cushions than nature ever meant them to take. And those cushions have to be constantly rebuilt from what your dog eats. This is not bad luck. It is not something that might happen one day. If your dog has that body type, the wearing down has already started. What is happening inside your dog right now In a normal-shaped dog, those cushions can hold up for most of their life. In a long-bodied breed, they start drying out and thinning years earlier than you would ever guess. The cushion gets thinner. The fluid inside it hardens. And the body cannot rebuild it fast enough to keep up with the strain. You will not see any of this. Your dog won't limp. They won't cry. They will run around like nothing is wrong. But inside, that cushion is getting more worn and more brittle every single day. Then one day, you see it It could be next month. It could be next year. It could happen from a jump off the couch, or it could happen in his sleep. One day he gets up and his back end won't follow. He drags his back legs. He cries when you pick him up. He can't get comfortable no matter how he lies. That is the worn-down cushion finally giving way and pressing where it should never press. And here is the hard part. Once that happens, you cannot undo it overnight. By the time you see it, a lot of the damage is already done. I have seen owners spend thousands on imaging, surgery, and specialist visits trying to get back what was lost. And even then, there is no promise of getting their dog walking the way he was. What most owners are already doing isn't enough I know what you are thinking right now. You bought the ramp. You stopped letting him jump off the couch. You carry him up the stairs. You got him a little harness. You are being careful. Those things help. They take some of the strain off the back, and I tell every owner to do them. But here is the truth nobody told you. A ramp does not rebuild the cushion that is already wearing away. Stopping him jumping does not put the fluid back. Carrying him does not reach the cushion at all. The wearing down is happening deep inside the spine, at a level you cannot see, long before any of the trouble ever shows up. No amount of being careful on the outside stops what is happening on the inside. The supplement aisle is making it worse The other thing every owner does is walk into the pet store and grab a tub of joint chews. I have to be straight with you about this. It is not that the ingredient on the bag is fake. It is that almost none of it is reaching your dog. To make a chew, they cook it at high heat to press it and hold it together. The good stuff in there is fragile, and that heat wrecks most of it before the bag is ever sealed. What is left is barely anything. And the soft chews, the ones sold to you as the stronger, premium upgrade? Those are worse. To make a chew soft and tasty they pack it full of fillers and binders, starches and grease and flavoring. So most of what your dog is actually eating is filler. The tiny bit of good that survived the heat then has to fight through all of that before any of it gets absorbed. So owners spend 40, 50, 60 dollars a month on a chew that keeps the dog a little comfortable for a few weeks and never actually reaches the cushion that is wearing down. Meanwhile that cushion keeps thinning. What actually works, and why I point my own clients to it To slow the cushion wearing down, you have to do one thing. You have to actually get the right stuff into the joint and the spine. Not cooked. Not buried in filler. Actually reaching the cushion that needs it. The single best natural thing I have found for this is Green Lipped Mussel, a shellfish that grows only off the coast of New Zealand. It naturally holds the building blocks that the cushion is made from, the things the spine and joints need to rebuild and to stay lubricated, in the form a dog's body absorbs best. Not a synthetic copy made in a factory. The real thing, the way it comes from the sea. But that is only true if it survives the trip into your dog. And that is exactly where almost every product fails. It does not only support the back. The same mussel supports the hips, the knees, the shoulders, the whole body. One simple ingredient, complete joint and spine support. I think of it as feeding the cushion every single day, giving the spine what it needs to keep rebuilding instead of just wearing down. The problem is that most products on the shelf are blends. Green Lipped Mussel mixed with cheap synthetic fillers, the dose of actual mussel too low to matter. And nearly all of them are heat-processed, which destroys most of the good before it ever reaches your dog. The one I point my own clients to is a single-ingredient, cold-pressed Green Lipped Mussel powder, sourced straight from New Zealand. No fillers. No synthetic junk. Just the pure powder, cold-pressed so the good in it actually stays alive all the way to the cushion. A scoop sprinkled on the food once a day. No pills. No chewing. Most dogs don't even notice it is there. A dog I saw last month A woman brought in her 2 year old Dachshund. Healthy. Bouncy. Not a sign of anything yet. She just wanted advice, because her sister's Dachshund had gone down in the back legs earlier that year and never fully recovered. I told her exactly what I am telling you. Start now. Don't wait for the first bad day. The cushion is already wearing, even though he looks fine. She started the cold-pressed mussel that week. I want that dog to still be jumping around at 12. I want that woman to never sit in the exam room where I watch owners cry every week. That is why I am writing this. This is not for the dog who is already down If your dog has already lost the use of his back legs, if he is already dragging and cannot get up, this is not the right thing for you. He needs to be seen in person, right away. He may need imaging, or a specialist, and time really matters. This is for the dogs who are still walking. Still bouncing. Still jumping up to say hello, even if you wish they wouldn't. Your window to protect that cushion is right now. Before the dragging. Before the bad morning. Before you are the one carrying him everywhere. If you have a Dachshund, a Frenchie, a Corgi, or any long-bodied dog, please do not wait until you are sitting across from a vet like me, wishing you had started sooner. The link is below. This is the powder I point my own clients to. Give your dog's spine and joints the daily support their body has been quietly losing.
