I found my own underwear in my stepfather's safe. Next to it — a stack of Polaroids of me sleeping, taken from my bedroom doorway. And underneath, a legal contract with one line circled in red ink: *Upon her 21st birthday, Shelly will become my wife.* My engagement party was in four hours. Let me back up. Marcus Thorne was my late mother's billionaire husband and my legal guardian. To the world, he was a cruel, untouchable businessman. To me, he was the controlling tyrant who dictated my every breath. My college boyfriend, Liam, came from a wealthy family. To my surprise, Marcus had actually approved the match. But yesterday, Marcus took my passport, claiming he wanted to prevent any scandal before the wedding. I needed that passport. That was why I was sneaking into his master bedroom — the one room in the house I was never allowed to enter. I found the box in the darkest corner of his walk-in closet, behind a row of custom suits. I expected business contracts. I got my own black lace panties — the ones the washing machine supposedly ate months ago. My silver hair ribbon from Christmas. And those photos. Me studying. Me laughing. Me sleeping. Taken from the doorway in the dead of night. The contract at the bottom was the worst part. Not because of what it said — but because his handwriting was steady. He hadn't written it in a moment of madness. He'd written it like a business plan. *No other man will ever touch her.* He didn't approve of Liam. He was never going to let me marry Liam. This whole engagement was a sick game. A heavy thud echoed through the house. The front door had just slammed shut. "Shelly?" Marcus's deep voice called from the downstairs hallway. He was home early. Panic seized my throat. I shoved the photos back into the box, but heavy footsteps were already coming up the stairs. He was heading straight to his bedroom. I grabbed the box, scrambled backward, and pushed myself deep into the furthest corner of his walk-in closet. I hid behind a row of winter coats, pulling the fabric around me like a shield. The bedroom door clicked open. Through a small gap between the coats, I watched him enter. Marcus stood six-foot-three, his broad shoulders filling the doorframe. He loosened his silk tie with one quick motion and unbuttoned his crisp white shirt. He tossed the shirt onto the bed, rolled his shoulders, and froze. His sharp eyes locked onto the stepping stool sitting in the middle of his closet floor. The temperature in the room seemed to drop. I pressed my back against the wall, praying he wouldn't see me. Marcus moved with the terrifying grace of a predator. He walked straight into the closet. The automatic lights switched off. The closet doors slid shut. Pitch black. The air grew instantly heavy with the scent of his body heat. His leather shoes stepped silently on the carpet. Step. Step. A hot hand clamped around my ankle. I gasped. He pulled me forward. The box slipped from my grasp, spilling the photos across the floor. Marcus towered over me, his hands gripping my waist, pulling me up until I was pressed flat against his bare, warm chest. "You know, Shelly," his deep voice vibrated in the darkness, sending shivers down my spine. "Some boxes are meant to stay closed." "Marcus, let me go!" I cried, pushing against his solid chest. "You're crazy! I'm getting engaged tonight!" Marcus let out a low, dark laugh. His hand slid into my hair, tilting my head back, exposing my neck. "Engaged?" he mocked, his thumb tracing my lower lip. "You really think I spent the last three years tearing my own sanity apart just to hand you over to a boy?" "I am not your property!" "You read the contract," he whispered against my ear. His other hand gripped my hip, pressing me hard against him. "I kept Liam around because he's stupid enough to manage. But you are mine, little mouse." He suddenly let me go. Pushing the closet doors open, the sudden light blinded me. Marcus stood there, looking down with cold authority. "Wipe your tears," he commanded, adjusting his cuffs. "Go downstairs. Put on your pretty dress. Play the good fiancée tonight." "And if I tell Liam what you did?" I challenged. Marcus's eyes darkened. "Liam's family business will be bankrupt by midnight, and I will lock you in this house forever. Now, get out of my room." By 8:00 PM, the mansion was full of New York's elite. Chapter 2 I stood in my white silk dress next to Liam. Liam smiled, completely unaware of the dangerous man standing ten feet away holding a glass of bourbon. Every time Liam touched my waist, Marcus's jaw tightened. Every time Liam kissed my cheek, Marcus's dark eyes looked like they wanted to hurt someone. "You okay, babe?" Liam asked, noticing my pale face. "You're shaking." "I just need some air," I lied, stepping away. I couldn't stay in this house waiting for midnight. I slipped through the kitchen, grabbed a set of spare keys, and ran toward the detached garage. My hands shook as I unlocked Marcus's Aston Martin. I threw myself into the driver's seat and started the engine. The powerful car roared to life. The heavy steel garage doors slammed shut. The Aston Martin's engine coughed and died. The dashboard screen flashed red: SYSTEM OVERRIDE. I frantically hit the unlock button, but the car was a dead metal box. Marcus stepped out of the shadows. He set his whiskey glass on the hood, pulled a small remote from his pocket, and popped my car door open. The cold night air rushed in, mixed with his strong scent of cedar and pure anger. "Liam is looking for you," Marcus said smoothly, leaning down into the car. "Let me go, Marcus," I cried, pressing myself against the passenger seat. "I gave you a choice," he whispered, unbuckling my seatbelt with terrifying precision. "I told you to play the good daughter. But since you prefer to run..." He grabbed my waist, pulled me out of the car, and threw me over his broad shoulder. I screamed and beat my fists against his back. He ignored every hit. "...Then it's time I stop acting like your father," his deep voice echoed in the empty garage. "And start acting like your owner." He bypassed the party entirely, kicking open the door to his private elevator. We were going straight to his soundproof master suite. There was no one to hear me. The private elevator doors opened. His large hands held my thighs firmly against his waist as he carried me to the center of the master suite. With a smooth, strong motion, he tossed me onto the huge king-sized bed. I scrambled backward against the velvet headboard, the white silk of my dress tangling awkwardly around my legs. "Marcus, Liam is downstairs!" I pleaded, my voice trembling. "Let him look," Marcus growled. He threw his jacket onto a leather chair and unbuttoned his cuffs. His dark eyes locked onto me with a hunger that made my blood run hot. "Liam is drinking my champagne, completely unaware that you are in my bed," Marcus said, stepping closer. "That boy doesn't have the courage to claim you. I do." He stepped up to the edge of the mattress. His large hands gripped the elegant neckline of my expensive white engagement dress. With one sharp motion, he tore the heavy silk right down the middle. I gasped as the cool air hit my skin, leaving me exposed in my black lace underwear. The physical destruction of my dress was his ultimate statement. "You will never wear another man's ring or dress," he said roughly, his muscular body following me down onto the mattress, pinning me completely. His hands held my wrists above my head. "Tell me you understand, Shelly." The raw heat radiating from his skin sent a shiver straight to my core. My brain screamed to fight, but my body had secretly wanted his dominant presence for years. "I understand," I breathed out, my resistance breaking. "Good girl," he whispered, crashing his mouth down on mine. His kiss was fierce, tasting of aged whiskey and dark possession. I opened my mouth to him willingly, letting him taste my complete surrender. A low groan came from deep in his chest. He trailed hot kisses down my jaw, his teeth brushing my collarbone, claiming me. "Three years," he growled against my heated skin, his hand tracing the curve of my waist. "Do you know why I married your mother, Shelly?" I froze, my breath catching in my throat. "I didn't love her," he whispered, his lips brushing my ear. "I saw a picture of you on her desk. A beautiful, naive eighteen-year-old girl. I married her just to get legal custody of you. To build walls around you so high no one else could ever reach you. I waited three agonizing years for you to turn twenty-one. You were never her daughter in this house. You were my future wife." A wicked, forbidden thrill shot through my veins at his terrifying confession. "Marcus," I gasped, my fingers tangling desperately into his thick hair. "Tell me what you want, Shelly. Tell me you are choosing this." I looked into his dark pools of desire. "Make me yours." A wicked, proud smile spread across his handsome face. "As you wish, Mrs. Thorne." When he finally settled between my thighs, the pain was brief, swallowed instantly by a consuming heat. I lost myself in the storm of his touch. Knowing a ballroom full of guests was directly beneath us only made the pleasure sharper and darker. "Mine," he whispered fiercely against my bare shoulder as we collapsed into the pillows. "You don't leave this bed tonight." Chapter 3 Morning sunlight flooded through the large windows. I blinked against the light, a deep ache spreading through my muscles. Marcus sat in the armchair near the window, sipping black coffee. Dressed in a crisp black shirt, the fire-driven man from last night had vanished. Marcus Thorne the calculating billionaire was back. The frantic memories of last night rushed over me. A jolt of panic hit my chest. "Marcus... the party," I stammered, sitting up quickly. "Liam. What happened downstairs?" Marcus casually set his coffee cup on the glass table. "I informed Liam the engagement was off," he said smoothly. "I told his parents that if they ever contacted you again, their family business would be dismantled by Monday morning. Security escorted them out." My stomach dropped. "You went down there? While I was asleep in your bed?" "You are my woman now, Shelly. I clean up the messes." He walked over to the bed, reaching into his pocket. He placed two items onto the mattress. A heavy brass key. A small, black velvet box. "I don't play games," Marcus said, his intense gaze locking onto mine. "Take that key, walk out the front door, and I will transfer five million dollars into your account. You can fly to Mexico. You will be free." I stared at the brass key. "Or," his voice dropped lower as he flipped the velvet box open. Inside rested a breathtaking, emerald-cut diamond ring. "Put on this ring. But if you do, Shelly... you will never leave my side again." I looked at the diamond. It represented endless wealth and the passion we shared. Then I looked at Marcus. I saw the possessive darkness in his eyes. I thought about how easily he locked me in a closet, hijacked my car, and crushed Liam's family. If I put that ring on, I would be a prisoner in a cage of gold. My hand trembled as I reached out over the silk sheets. A tiny muscle ticked in Marcus's strong jaw. He looked perfectly composed, but a thick vein pulsed in his neck, and his knuckles were turning white where he gripped the edge of the velvet box. He was a predator holding his breath, waiting for my choice. My fingers bypassed the velvet box. I grabbed the heavy brass key. "I can't breathe in a cage, Marcus," I whispered, clutching the key to my chest. The temperature in the room plummeted. The illusion of his calm shattered completely. The velvet box snapped shut with a sharp crack that echoed like a gunshot in the silent room. The warmth drained entirely from his eyes, leaving behind the freezing, ruthless billionaire the world feared. "Get dressed," Marcus ordered, his voice completely hollow. He turned his back to me. "Your bags are packed downstairs. The money will be in your account in five minutes. Do not ever come back." The heavy iron gates of the Thorne estate closed behind the Uber with a loud clang. I sat in the back, holding my duffel bag. I had the brass key. My banking app showed five million dollars in my checking account. I was free. Yet I felt like I was suffocating. An hour later, I stood in my friend Chloe's small Brooklyn apartment. I gave her the short version: Marcus forbade the marriage and kicked me out. "Are you insane?" Chloe shrieked, pacing the living room. "He threw you out? Shelly, your engagement is ruined!" "I have money, Chloe," I said quietly, sitting on her cheap sofa. "I just need a place to crash for a few days until I figure out where to go." Chloe stopped pacing and grabbed the TV remote. "Shelly, you don't understand what's happening. Look at the news." She turned up the volume on the television. A financial news anchor was speaking rapidly over a scrolling red ticker. “...Thorne Industries has launched an aggressive takeover of the Vanguard Group. The Vanguard CEO has suffered a complete financial collapse within hours..." Vanguard Group. Liam's family company. Marcus hadn't just kicked them out. Because I chose to leave, Marcus unleashed his anger on the boy who tried to take me away. My phone buzzed. Caller ID: Liam. My hands shook as I answered it. "Liam? I'm so sorry—" "You lying bitch!" Liam's voice roared. He sounded drunk and unstable. "Your step-father ruined my family! My dad is having a heart attack, and we are bankrupt!" "Liam, please, I didn't know he would do this—" "He did this because of you!" Liam screamed, his voice turning darkly threatening. "You think you can just ruin my life and walk away? I know you're not at the mansion anymore, Shelly. I still have your location sharing on from yesterday. I'm coming to find you, and I am going to make you pay for what you did to us." He hung up. A fresh wave of terror crashed over me. I rushed to the window of the apartment, looking down at the gritty Brooklyn streets below. My phone lit up with a new text from Liam. It was a picture of Chloe's apartment building, taken from the dark street below. I'm downstairs, Shelly. Come out right now, or I'm coming up to break the door down. I stared at the screen, realizing the terrifying truth. The monster wasn't inside my golden cage. The monster was waiting outside.
