The hospital called at 3 AM to tell me my husband was dying. When I burst through the ICU doors, he was whispering someone's name. Not mine. "Stella... tell Stella I'm sorry..." I stood frozen, my hand still reaching for his. The heart monitor beeped in erratic spasms. "Ryan, I'm here. It's me. Claire." My voice cracked. His eyes fluttered open, glassy and unfocused. For a moment, he looked right through me. "Stella... the baby..." The nurse glanced at me with pity so thick I could choke on it. I was his wife of four years. I'd given up my law career to support his startup. I'd held him through every failure, every panic attack, every sleepless night. And his dying words were for another woman. Ryan flatlined at 3:47 AM. They revived him — barely. When he stabilized, the doctor pulled me aside. "Mrs. Parker, your husband's liver is failing. He needs a transplant within two weeks, or..." "I'll get tested. I'll donate part of mine," I said immediately. The doctor hesitated. "Actually, there's already a match on file. A woman named Stella Morgan contacted us yesterday. She's a perfect match and has already agreed to be the donor." The ground tilted beneath me. A stranger was offering to save my husband's life, and he was calling her name in his sleep. I drove home in a daze. Ryan's phone had been placed in a bag with his personal belongings. I'd never checked his phone before. Never had a reason to. I typed in his passcode — our anniversary. It didn't work. I tried his birthday. Wrong. I tried mine. Wrong. On a hunch, I typed S-T-E-L-L-A. The phone unlocked. My hands were steady. That surprised me. I thought they'd shake, but no. Something in me had already gone cold. The messages went back three years. Three out of our four years of marriage. "I miss you. Come home to me." — Ryan, sent on our second anniversary. The night he said he was working late. "The baby kicked today. I wish you were here." — Stella, with a photo of her swollen belly attached. Baby. I scrolled faster. There were hundreds of photos. Stella pregnant. Stella holding a newborn. A baby with Ryan's exact dimples, his dark curls, his crooked smile. The child was almost two years old now. For two years, my husband had a secret family. I closed the phone and set it down carefully on the kitchen counter. Then I opened my laptop and pulled up the hospital's donor authorization form — the one I'd need to sign as his wife to approve the transplant procedure. Without my signature, Stella couldn't save him. His life was literally in my hands. I stared at the form until the sun came up. My phone buzzed. It was Ryan's mother, Linda. "Claire, sweetheart, I just heard about Ryan. I'm catching the first flight. How is he?" "He's stable for now. Linda... who is Stella Morgan?" The silence on the other end told me everything. "You knew," I whispered. "Claire, honey, let me explain—" I hung up. So the whole family knew. His mother, probably his sister, maybe even his friends. Everyone knew about Stella, about the baby, about the parallel life my husband had been living. Everyone except his wife. My phone buzzed again. An unknown number. "Hi, this is Stella. I know you must hate me, but I need you to sign the donor form. Please. He's the father of my child." I read the message three times. Then I typed back: "Come to the hospital at noon. Let's meet face to face." If she wanted my signature, she could look me in the eyes and ask for it. What she didn't know was that I'd already made my decision.
