I'll never understand why I ever stuck my di.k in her. Glory had wanted me since middle school. I fvcked her on and off throughout the years. We never dated. I never dated anyone. I'm part of a motorcycle club. It's hard to tie a brother down, and I definitely wasn't going to be tied down as a teenager. Glory was just a patch chaser anyway. She wanted me for the clout, my money, my brand. Never me. She just wanted a comfortable life. Honestly, I shouldn't have let Glory do whatever she wanted. I was young and dumb. I didn't care. I thought that Glory would figure out one day that she was only a quick fu.ck for me and that was it. The only time I ever got in her sh.it over a girl was when she slapped Deidra across the face when we were in the 8th grade. She did it in front of everyone and told Deidra it was for looking at her man. I knew she was talking about me. I wasn't her man though, and Deidra definitely wasn't looking at me. No, Deidra never looked at me. Definitely not with heart-eyes either. I was the one looking at her, and that always pi.ssed Glory off. Pretty sure that's why she even started taking Waylen to the diner in the first place. Just to rub it in Deidra's face. Not that Thorn ever gave a f.ck about me or who I f.cked. Not sure what Glory was even thinking. I'm pi.ssed, yeah. My son didn't come home from school again, and I had the whole club out looking for him. "I just like being with Dra," he mumbled with a sad look on his face. Dra. That damn nickname he has for her. She once told me that she hated nicknames. Of course, it was because I was calling her Thorn and Lily-pad every day, but still. I sound f.cking pathetic being jealous over my own damn son. This little man wanted a mother. "A mom?" Waylen asked, giving me a curious look. "You mean like Dra?" Waylen asked, and I choked on air at the question. Of course, every interaction I've ever had with the woman was mostly her yelling at me in some way. Even if it was just with those stupidly bright hazel eyes of hers. The woman barely ever lets me finish a damn sentence. That's partly why I call her Thorn. 'Cause she's a thorn in my damn side. And Waylen only ever sees her when she's at work. Which is all the time, but still. "I think she is," Waylen said softly, sulking now. "She's nice to me. She ruffles my hair. She feeds me, and she even used to cut up my food at the diner, Dad. And you remember how she used to yell at Mom about being nicer to me?" "Honey!" My friend called out, getting my attention. "Come, tell you something about Deidra." "What?" "Caught her man and bestie f.cking in her bed and chased them out with a shotgun like a total bada.ss." She said, laughing loudly. "When you gonna put a cut on that girl, Jinx?" I blinked, unable to even reply to that. Deidra is not my girl. I refuse to claim any woman. Especially after the sh.it Glory pulled. I could never trust anyone. But I've known Thorn pretty much my whole life, and she doesn't want me for my patch. Or at all. And fu.ck, I knew Sophie was sh.it! And that Theo guy! He should have just stayed away from her when I told him to. None of that came out of my mouth though. Nothing did. Because even though I knew that nothing would ever come of it, all I could think was... Deidra's single? ***** Deidra's P.O.V. ******************************* The rest of the day went by slowly. We were busy on and off. I had a bride-to-be come in to talk about using us for her wedding. The bakery across the street came in to buy a pastry and make a huge thing in the middle of the place to try to drive my customers away. If it weren't for my little knight in shining armor, I think I might have been arrested today. June, owner of Tasty Treats, comes in at least once every two weeks. She buys something, stands in the middle of the lobby, and loudly complains about it. She's dropped cups of coffee, spilled potted plants, literally smashed muffins onto the floor... It's kind of insane behavior for a woman in her late 30s, but hey girl, crashout if that makes you feel better. However, I can also crashout. And I will. I maintain a pretty level head most of the time, but June and I have gotten into it a few times in front of customers. Deb has had to break us up. Deb even went as far as to call and speak to not only June's husband — who doesn't give a flying sh.it about what his wife does, but also called her mother. Nothing has helped. Except my knight in shining armor that is. "Waylen, where is your mother?" I asked the seven-year-old boy who spent his entire day in my shop. Well, after school let out that is. "Told you, she's gone," he replied without looking up from his coloring book. "It's just me and dad now." I tried not to show how happy I was that his sh.it a.ss mother was gone. Not sure if the bi.tch packed up and left or if she was finally forced out of town. I hadn't seen her in over a year, but I thought that was because she was avoiding me. You see, Erica — or Glory, whatever she goes by now — have never gotten along. We went to school together our entire lives. She was the popular cheerleader, and I was the loner type. I never cared, but she did for some reason. She always bullied me, but I was never one to just take sh.it either. I talked sh.it back, but it never went further than that. Okay, there was one time, but it was stupy. After we graduated from high school. Erica shacked up at the Salvation Knights clubhouse on the edge of town. I'd heard she became a club bunny and that she was a patch chaser. I had no idea what either of those things were, but I sure do now. Kind of hard not to when you're surrounded by it. The fu.cking bi.tch used to bring Waylen to the diner when I worked there, drop him off in a booth, and fu.cking leave. Leave! Like it was a daycare. The owner, Big Ricky, was going to kick the kid onto the street when he was like three-years-old. I threatened to set the diner on fire if he did that. Which resulted in me pretty much babysitting for free. Until I'd finally had enough one day. After Waylen sat in a booth for two hours, sick as sh.it and running a high fever, I lost my sh.it. That was about two years ago now. I took my apron off, told Big Ricky I'd be back, and drove me and Waylon to the gates of the Salvation Knights MC. I stormed in after being let through the gates with Waylen in tow and cussed out a room full of bikers. I even refused to let go of Waylen until his id.iot father swore to me that he'd take him right to the hospital. I even followed them to make sure. That day was the last time I ever saw Erica. However, Waylen still showed up at the diner every day. Much to his father's dismay. Not that the man hated me, but Waylon just never told anyone where he was going. How an entire clubhouse full of adults lost sight of one child every single day is beyond me. "Waylen, if it's just you and your dad, why aren't you at the clubhouse?" I asked. The little cutie winced. I sighed, half groaning when I realized what that meant. He might be here every day, but usually someone from the club is with him. Sometimes he shows up alone, but that usually means... "Waylen!!" I jumped a foot in the air at that shout. I whirled around, my body moving to shield the boy. It's not like I think his dad would ever hurt him. It's just a reaction. Probably because I really don't condone yelling at children. Jinx Roth stormed into my shop looking like delicious sin. Which instantly made me glare at him. It's completely unfair how unreasonably se.xy this face is and always has been. When's his awkward stage going to hit? I've only been waiting over 20 years to see it! Jinx is a couple of years older than me, but we graduated the same year. We were never friends, never hung out in the same circles, but we knew each other due to school. He's always been attractive, but the older he gets, the more ridiculous it is. The man has got to be at least 6 feet, 4 inches, and all pure muscle. He wears his cut with the club's logo with pride. It's an outline of a knight in purple, holding a sward. It's drawn in a goth-style, making it look freaking awesome. Not that I'd ever tell Jinx that. My eyes always linger on the stitched name on the right side of his cut. Jinx. The name everyone's called him since we were in middle school. His long golden blonde hair is pulled back into a manbun, but looks frazzled. Probably due to his missing kid. Those bright blue and green eyes were angry, and it only made him look better. He had stubble growing across his sharp jaw. His nose was crooked from fighting one too many times. He looked like a model. Why does he have to be Waylen's dad? "Don't fu.cking give me that look Thorn," Jinx bit out when he saw the scowl on my face. "Stop shouting in my store before I throw you out," I stated before quietly adding. "It's Christmas time. Be jolly for once in your miserable life, Jinx." Jinx let out a harsh laugh, rolled his shoulders, and took a deep breath. "Sorry, but my fu.cking son didn't come home from school and the entire club's been out looking for him-" "Jesus, just stop," I cut him off, waving my hand in the air as I rolled my eyes. "Why you didn't come here first, I'll never know." "He promised me he'd stop bothering you," Jinx ground out. "He never bothered me in the first place," I said as I walked behind the counter. "It was his dipsh.it mother that annoyed me. Waylen is always welcome." Jinx sighed and rested his fists on the counter. I set a black coffee in front of him, and he thanked me before taking a drink. "I'll talk with him," Jinx promised. "Start with the dangers of walking somewhere all alone," I muttered. Thankfully, Jinx left it at that. Which was surprising. Usually he always has something to say back. Instead, he gathered his son's belongings and left my little shop. I knew that no talk would stop Waylen from coming here. He said that he likes being around me because I'm calm and I care. I don't doubt that Jinx and the rest of the club care about him. I've seen it with my own eyes. But his mom never did, and I'm sure living at a motorcycle clubhouse is never calm. I tried not to let my thoughts wander for the rest of the day. Once I closed up and sent Alexis home, I took an inventory count. I prepared everything for the next morning, looked over the day's sales, and checked on the plants before leaving. Just when I got in my car, I got a text from Deb. She let me know that she wasn't feeling that well and was going to have some soup and go to bed. I offered to go check on her, but she refused. Which was like her. So, I went home. The first thing that tipped me off that something was off were the two sets of shoes by my door that weren't mine. I recognized them both as Theo's and Sophie's. I knew that Theo was going to come over after work, but I thought he was working late. We haven't moved in together yet because Theo said neither of our places were big enough. I thought his was, but we did put a deposit down on a place and get to move in after the wedding. At first, I thought that maybe the two of them were planning some surprise for me. I guess I was sort of right. The apartment was silent. All the lights were on. My Christmas tree was in the corner, lit up with a handful of gifts under it. There was a set-up at the table on top of my decorative cloth, for two with wine glasses and candles. Cute, right? Would be if the plates didn't have scraps of food left, and the wine glasses weren't half empty. This wasn't something they were setting up for me. This was something they set up and enjoyed behind my back. And at my apartment of all places? What the fu.ck! I tip-toed through my apartment, taking in the line of clothes that lead to my room. My bedroom door was shut, which wasn't how I left it. Ever. For a moment, I just stood there. I knew what I'd find behind that door. I knew that something was off with them. I knew... deep down, I knew. But the betrayal still hurt deeply. A loud, fake moan knocked a bit of sense into me. I carefully opened the door just as the headboard started banging on the wall. And there they were. My best friend and my fiancé, barely wear nothing, entangled with each other. Theo was on top with Sophie's body wrapped around him. He was balls deep in her, both their faces full of pleasure. Again, why my apartment? The first thought that crossed my mind was: I just changed those sheets too. Then it was: I wonder how many times I slept there without changing the sheets and no fu.cking knowledge at all that I was sleeping in my best friends "wet spot". Oh, I bet she got a kick out of us singing that Megan Thee Stallion song. I shouldn't even be surprised. Sophie was always like this. She had to be the center of attention. She always stole my things. She never let me have other friends. Theo was the very first boyfriend I'd ever had. I should have seen it coming, should have known she'd do something like this. But I thought she loved me. I thought she just liked the spotlight, but that she still cared about me. I mean, she and I had been friends since preschool. We've gone through everything together. She was there for my parents' funeral. She knew that Theo had taken my virginity and that he was my first everything. Sophie has done a lot of questionable things throughout our friendship, but this... this is devastating. She was my person. The only person left in my life aside from Deb. I lost everyone else. And apparently, our life-long friendship meant nothing to her. "You like that baby?" Theo asked her again. "You like it when I fu.ck you, don't you?" "Yes! Yes Theo!" Sophie moaned loudly and dramatically. "You're so naughty, suggesting we have our date here tonight," Theo said, further shattering my world. "I love it when we sneak around." This was Sophie's idea? "Show me how naughty I really am," Sophie said with a giggle. I couldn't hear it anymore. These two should have known me better. Known that, no matter how upset I get... I am not the type to go out without a fight. !!!! **** WARNING! THIS CHAPTER CONTAINS MATERIALS THAT SOME READERS MAY FIND DISTRESSING! SUCH AS GUNS AND VIOLENCE! READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED! **** !!!! ************************************ Deidra's P.O.V. ******************************* The two of them were going at it so vigorously that they still hadn't noticed I'd come home. I moved to my closet where I kept my shotgun. I wasn't technically allowed to have it, but Deb insisted I take it if I wanted to live alone. I told her a bat would have been fine, but now I'm glad she made me take the gun. I loaded the barrel with two shells, and then co.cked that motherfu.cker. The noise of the gun co.cking finally broke through their love-haze. Theo made a confused face and turned his head. His eyes went wide and jumped so fast from the bed that he fell on the floor. Sophie looked around confused, and screamed when she saw me. "Deidra," she breathed out. "Both of you, get the fu.ck out," I stated, sounding much calmer than I felt. "Deidra baby, calm down, this isn't what it looks like," Theo said as he scrambled to his feet. My eyes glanced down to see that he wasn't even wearing a thing. Now I have to schedule an STI test. A full panel checkup. Because my slu.tty best friend has been fu.cking my fiancé. For all I know, they're both sleeping with other people too. Each other, other people, and me... "Save it," I spat. "No, baby, please, I love you. I do. I really do," Theo pleaded, eyes full of guilt. "Love me enough to fu.ck the girl I used to consider a sister," I said sarcastically. Sophie scoffed from my bed. She was sitting up, leaning against the headboard. She made no move to cover herself up. She didn't even look guilty or ashamed. If anything, she looked annoyed. "Oh come on," she said, rolling her eyes at me. "He's just a man. You'd never let our friendship crumble over a guy. You're too sweet. You love me too much." Then she looked at Theo. "And stop lying to her. You love me." I raised a brow as I pointed the gun at her. "You really think this wouldn't matter to me?" I asked incredulously. "Theo and I are supposed to get married next month!" I shouted. "You were supposed to be my maid of honor! Christmas is next week! We had plans to... And you've been fu.cking him! You betrayed me in the worst way possible, and you act like it's fu.cking nothing?" "It is nothing, because the two of you never loved each other," Sophie snapped, finally getting up from my bed. "I knew it from the beginning. Poor Theo really thought you loved him. But I know you, Deidra. I know you were faking it." I stared at her with my mouth open for a minute. Partly because of her sheer audacity. Partly because... I think she might be right and don't want to admit it. Theo and I didn't have a lot of passion between us. I tried, really. I faked it so well that even I believed it. But I thought Theo was a good man. I thought that, at least, I was settling down with a man I could trust. A man who had a good head on his shoulders. How'd I never realize how truly weak Theo is? Sophie walked closer, and I held the gun up higher. She stopped with her hands up, looking at me like I was the irrational one here. It made me want to pull the trigger just out of spite. "Look, I love you Deidra," Sophie said. "So much. You're my sister. I didn't mean for this to happen with Theo, but..." Then she looked at him. He looked at her. And they fu.cking smiled. Smiled like they weren't standing n.ked in my room after betraying me in the worst possible way. "We fell in love," Theo blurted, both of them looking at me again. Sorry, did he just say love? They fell in love? Sophie fell in love? This Sophie? The same Sophie I've known my whole life? I couldn't help the snort that came out of me. "Sophie? In love? Yeah, okay," I said. "It's true," Sophie said. "We were going to tell you after Christmas." "You mean, mere days before my wedding?" I asked. "Why not just tell me right away and get your money back for all the wedding bullsh.it?" The guilt that flickered across Theo's face had my heart sinking. I really thought I loved the guy. At the very least, I cared for him and trusted him. I was going to pledge the rest of my life to him. And he chose my best friend. "The wedding is still going to happen," Sophie stated, her voice soft but stern. Still going to happen... just not with me. I think I made that clear. , I think they're making it pretty clear. So that must mean... "You two... are going to get married?" I choked up, feeling the tears well up in my eyes. "Yes..." Theo replied apprehensively. Every single decision I made about this wedding, Sophie was a part of. It was my dream wedding. Not too big, but I don't have family anyway. I had to reserve the venue two years in advance. It was the only reason we were waiting so long. Because I have had my heart set on the Greenhouse since I was little. And now my best friend is getting married there. To my fiancé. I'll never be able to get married there. I'll probably never trust another man ever again to even be able to get married. It felt like the walls were closing in. It was too much, too overwhelming. My entire world just imploded. Love or not. I trusted both of them. And Sophie... I can't believe she'd do something like this to me. "Was this the plan all along?" I asked, narrowing my eyes at my ex-best friend. "The whole time I was planning the wedding... you were really getting me to plan yours?" "It didn't start until after you got the Greenhouse," she told me. "I never meant for it to turn out like this, Deidra. I just-" "Never meant for this?" I scoffed, cutting her off. "You apparently told Theo I didn't really love him. You inserted yourself into our relationship. YOU did ALL of this, Sophie! Knowingly! With an agenda! You seduced him into sleeping with you in the hopes that he'd break up with me, didn't you!? You just didn't expect to fall in love. Or that I would cut you out of my life." "You wouldn't," she whispered. "Oh, I would, and I am," I stated, holding the gun at them again. "Get your clothes and get out. You have two minutes. I never want to see either of you again." "You don't mean that-" "Get the fu.ck out!" I screamed, cutting Sophie off. "Before I fu.cking shoot!" Sophie rolled her eyes. "Oh please, you don't have the balls to do that," she said. Something in me snapped. Maybe it was finding them in my bed together. Maybe it was knowing that my best friend had orchestrated this entire mess. Maybe it was Theo's pansy a.ss remaining silent. Maybe it was the way Sophie brushed me off, like I was the crazy one, like I had no right to feel this way after finding her with my fiancé. Whatever the reason... I pulled the trigger. The gunshot went off, echoing harshly in the room. Sophie and Theo both screamed, which was great, because it was a huge turn-off on Theo's part. They both looked at the hole in the wall. I co.cked the gun again and this time, they actually looked scared. However, I was done playing. I pulled the trigger again, this time at their feet. They both screamed again, but started to scurry off. I reloaded the gun and followed them into the hall. I may, or may not have followed them all the way to the front door, shooting off five rounds in total. I chased them out while they were still covered nothing. "You're insane!" Theo screamed as he pulled the driver's door open of his car. I shot again, shattering his back windshield. "Deidra! This is too far!" Sophie screamed. "Nah," I said as I reloaded. "Too far would be shooting him in the nuts, so you two could never have kids." Then I aimed the gun right for his precious junk. Before I could actually do it, he got in the car though. "This isn't over, Deidra!" Sophie shouted. "You will forgive me! I'll see you at the wedding!" Then she got in the car, and Theo tore out of the parking lot like a bat. I stood there for a moment, thinking how insane those two are. They called me crazy, but they expected me to just be fine with his betrayal. To accept it and be part of it. It's disgusting. Unfortunately for me, I am a little insane. Because I'd completely forgotten about the fact that I lived in an apartment complex. And I just shot off my illegal gun a fu.ck ton of times. The only thing that alerted me to my mistake were the red and blue lights accompanied by the wailing sirens that were heading my way. "Awh, sh.it," I muttered under my breath. Deb is so not going to be happy with me. Deidra's P.O.V. ******************************* "Jesus Christ Deid, you really got yourself in it this time," Officer Melvin said as he stopped in front of the cell bars. I sighed heavily. He's literally the fifth cop to come back here and tell me that. Small towns. Gotta love 'em. Half these police officers grew up with me. The other half knew my parents. My parents might not have had any family, but they made a family here. My dad was a firefighter and Mom was a nurse. They were caretakers. Everyone loved them. And everyone felt it hard when they suddenly died. Despite my parents being pillars of the community, I was not as sociable as them. I liked plants. I liked to garden or go for nature walks. I was content with being on my own. People made an effort to talk to me when they saw me and my parents raised me to be polite, but that didn't mean I was as loved as they were. I miss them. However, Officer Dylan Melvin was someone I was a bit closer to, you could say. He and I were part of the garden club in high school. Dylan was nice, and we had conversations here and there, but I'm not sure that I would call him a friend. His parents knew mine, so I always assumed he just felt bad for me like everyone else. I understood their pity, but it was annoying. "You gonna tell anyone what happened?" he asked me. "Deb said she gave you that gun for protection when Captain Russo called her. She can't figure out why you'd be shooting off if you weren't attacked though." I leaned my head back against the nasty wall as I looked around the nasty cell. Christmas music was playing low in the background. The whole station was decked out for the holiday. Even the cells are lined with Christmas lights. It's super adorable and not at all what I pictured for a police station. Again, small towns and all. There was one other girl in here with me. She looked like a prostitute, and I felt bad thinking it because I recognized her. She's one of the Salvation Knights' club bunnies. One of the nicer ones. I asked her why she was here, and she said one of the cops arrested her because he thought she was trying to sell herself on the street. Apparently, she's waiting for someone from the club to come get her and raise for the farce of an arrest. We actually talked for a while. I found out her name is Honey. I thought it was fitting for her; she's sweet and has pretty brown skin. She asked me what I was doing here. I told her, but I did it quietly. It wasn't like I was embarrassed by what happened. I just... the longer I stay here means the longer I can prolong going home. Once I get there, I have to face reality. I have to burn my bed, pack up everything that reminds me of those two, and tell my handful of friends that my wedding is actually being taken over by my ex-best friend. Honestly, it all wouldn't be that bad if I had my best friend. If I had someone to go through this with me. I have Deb, and she's like a second mother to me, but she's also taken care of me for the last nine years. I've always hated having to dump my problems on her. She uprooted her whole life to move here and take care of me. I don't want to lean on her for every little thing for the rest of my life. God, why'd it have to be Sophie? "Deb's worried about you, Deid," Dylan said gently. "Just tell us what happened. Cap's willing to maybe let you go if you just tell us." I sighed again, wondering if I should just give it up. I'm getting tired. I know Deb is probably freaking out. She's probably tried to call Sophie a million times. Surprised the little wh.ore didn't answer just to tell her how she stole my fiancé. "For what it's worth," Honey spoke up. "Pretty sure he'd let ya go once you tell him. If you ask me, it was deserved." I smiled at her. "Hey, how's Waylen doing, by the way?" I asked. "Jinx's kid?" She asked with a confused expression. "Yeah, the little cutie patootie with a dipsh.it for a father and a complete ska.nk for a mother," I replied, making Honey burst out in laughter. "Oh, you must be the one he talks about all the time," she said. "That's me," I mumbled. "Had no idea," she said. "He calls you Thorn, so I didn't realize." I scrunched my face up at her. Waylen doesn't call me that name, his dad does. Maybe she's all confused or something. Maybe Jinx goes back to the clubhouse and complains about me. Good. I hope he does. I hope I consume all his thoughts every day that he sees me and goes and cries to his little club brothers about it. Little freaking baby. Honestly, I have no idea why I'm so mean to Jinx. Something about him just... makes me irritated as. Every time I see his fu.cking smug, se.xy face, I just want to punch him. He's annoying and the hotter he gets, the more annoyed I get. Who even told him he could start getting tatted? God, the man is infuriating, and it's always been like that between us. It's a shame he had such an adorable son. A son who looks exactly like him. At least the kid doesn't look like his mother. Not that she's ugly or anything. "What's that mean?" Dylan asked, looking from Honey to me and back again. I sighed for the millionth time. "I went home and found Theo in my bed with another woman," I told him. Dylan's eyes widened. "Theo? Your fiancé?" he asked, shaking his head. "Yup," I replied, popping the p. "But... that doesn't make sense," he said. "He loves you. Everyone can see it." "Well, I guess we're all fu.cking dumb then," I stated, making Honey snort. "Okay, so who was the woman, and what happened?" he asked. I swallowed the lump in my throat. "It was Sophie," I mumbled. Dylan's eyes went even wider. His lips parted, but no words came out. I stared at him as he stared at me. I wasn't sure if he expected me to tell him it was a joke or something, but that wasn't going to happen. This was real. And it was really happening to me. "But... that..." Dylan trailed off. "Sophie... I could see her doing this to you." He can? "But Theo?" he continued. "I just ran into him at the store last week. He was telling me about the wedding and how excited he was..." "Oh, I'm sure," I replied. "Because there's still going to be a wedding." "Oh sh.it," Honey breathed out, knowing exactly where I was headed. Dylan, bless his heart, was not as quick to catch on. "You're still going to marry him after he fu.cked your best friend?" he asked incredulously. I narrowed my eyes at him and crossed my arms. "Yes Dylan," I said, my voice hard and sarcastic. "I found him in my bed with my best friend, chased the two of them out of the entire apartment complex by shooting at them, and I'm still going to marry him." "You don't mean..." he trailed off, again, looking at me like he was waiting for me to say it was all a joke. "She told me they fell in love," I told him. "Then said that I'd get over it because I cared about her too much to let a man come between us." I scoffed as tears filled my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. "She fu.cked me over in the worst possible way, right before my favorite holiday and treated me like I was overreacting, or like she did me some fu.cking favor." Then I looked Dylan in the eyes. "So I chased them out with that shotgun. They're fu.cking lucky I didn't shoot either of them. I could have. I should have shot Theo in the nuts and taken out just one of Sophie's fake b...bs." Honey cackled at that. "Girl, I like you, you're fun," she said, laughing. Dylan blew out a breath and shook his head. "I'll go tell Captain Russo, but he'll probably want to speak to you and have you write a statement," he told me. "Hey, tell him to take his time," I replied. "I'll try to make it quick, Deid—" "No seriously," I cut him off. "The longer this takes, the longer I can put off reality, so please, take your time." Dylan gave me a nod of understanding before leaving to go speak to his boss. Captain Russo has been on the force since my parents were alive. He and my dad were friends. His wife and my mom were friends. Everyone was their friend though. "Can't believe that bit.ch had the balls to steal your whole wedding," Honey commented after a moment. I let out a hollow laugh. "Sophie's always been... charismatic," I replied, staring at the wall. "She had to be the center of attention all the time. I never minded it since I liked to fade into the background. She stole toys, spotlight, friends, projects, clothes, and all kinds of sh.it from me over the years. I always let it go because I thought she needed it more than me. I never thought she'd betray me like this though. But the more I think about it, the more I should have seen it coming. I already suspected it, but I kept telling myself that she wouldn't do that to me. That no matter how sh.it Sophie's been in the past, she'd never hurt me like that. But she did. And she made it a million times worse by stealing my wedding. But she was right. I don't think I loved Theo. Maybe she really does love him. Maybe it was my fault for being so... unemotional. Maybe it was better it turned out this way." God, listen to me totally unloading on this poor woman. "Still, that don't make it hurt less," Honey said gently. "She was supposed to be your friend. This was plain conniving betrayal. You deserve better than both of 'em." I gave her a small smile. "You're right, it doesn't make it hurt less, and I do deserve better," I agreed. "A huge part of me still can't understand how she could do this to me. She purposely set out for it. And the worst part, she stole the venue I'd been dreaming about getting married at my whole life. As sh.itty as it sounds, I think that hurts the most. It was the same place my parents got married. I had to reserve it two years in advance. And now she's going to ruin it. Even if I ever met someone else, I'd never be able to get married there and not think about it, ya know?" "Want to go find her and beat her up when we get out of here?" Honey asked, making me laugh softly. "I might hold you to that," I replied. "Just you wait, sweetheart," she said. "Karma will get those two." "Thanks Honey," I mumbled. I hope she's right, and I hope I get to see it. Deidra's P.O.V. ******************************* By the time I was released, it was nearly the next day. Captain Russo wasn't too happy that I made him wait so long. It didn't help that the president of the Salvation Knights showed up in the middle of it all to get Honey either. The man was pi.ssed. I'd seen War around town, served him at the diner and Garden Sip. He's a beast of a man and fu.cking scary-looking. He's a few years older than me, but he's always looked so intimidating. Not that I've ever gone out of my way to befriend any of the MC guys. Or anyone at all, for that matter. Apparently War and Captain Russo have a bit of history or something. The captain was actually apologizing to the MC president when I walked into his office. I was shocked and didn't even try to hide it. War looked at me for a moment, probably wondering why I was there, and then left without a word. Captain Russo made me tell him all the details about what happened. Then I had to write a statement. After that, he let me go. It was made clear that I was only being given a slap on the wrist because of his relationship he had with my parents. Not sure if the captain expected some sort of gratitude for that, but all he got was a "thanks" as I walked out. They could have treated me just like everyone else. I would have deserved it. I'm not going to be overly thankful because someone decided I should get special treatment. Deb was waiting for me just outside the police station. She looked worried and frazzled. I felt bad for keeping her waiting for so long. Especially since she already wasn't feeling good. I'm not only pathetic, but also selfish, apparently. "Thank god, Deidra," she said as she pulled me into her arms. "You had me so worried. What happened?" I sighed and pushed out of her arms. "Give me the keys," I said. "I'll drive us home and tell you all about it. " **************** "I never liked Sophie," Deb grumbled as I pulled into the driveway of my childhood home. It was hard to live here without my parents. Of course, I had to get over that if I wanted to keep the house. Deb and I managed to push through all the misery and find warmth in the house though. It took a while for it to feel like home again, but we eventually got there. Right now, the two-story house is decorated with colorful Christmas lights. There's a huge blow-up polar bear on one side of the yard, and a huge blow-up snow globe on the other side. We put out a few of the light-up deer that move too. My parents used to do way more decorating for Christmas than just this. They really always went all out. Mom would tell me stories about her Christmases as a kid. She lost her family in a fire when she was away during her first year of college. Lost her parents, siblings, all her childhood memories, everything. Dad never had good stories to tell about the holidays. He always said that his good memories didn't start until he met Mom. Then he would tell me about their very first Christmas together and how it was a disaster. He was in foster care all his life, so I could see why he probably didn't have anything good to say. "I know," I replied to Deb before getting out of the car. "I'm going to walk home. I'll see you later." "Excuse me young lady? You will do no such thing," Deb stated, making me gulp. "It's only two miles-" "I don't care," she cut me off. "You can stay here for now. I'll take you home after you've gotten some sleep." "Deb, I have to open the shop soon, and-" "I will handle everything, you just-" "No, I can't let you do th-" "Yes you can! I'm there to help-" "It's my baby!" "I don't care!" "But you're sick!" "It's just a little cold! I'm fine!" "Ugh!" I screamed in frustration, knowing I wasn't going to win. "Taking one day off isn't going to kill you, Deidra," Deb said as we walked to the front porch. "You deserve one after the night you had." I know she's right, but... the more work I do, the better I'll be. I need something to throw my energy into. But Deb has a point. I had a long night and I have a long day ahead of me. I'm sure I'm in for a lot of long days ahead. "I'm sorry you had to go through all of this, and while you're sick too," I said as I closed and locked the front door. "Nonsense, it's just a cold," she brushed me off before inspecting me with her eyes. "Are you sure you're alright, honey?" She asked. "You seem... angry, understandably so. But you haven't cried or anything. I know that you thought you and Theo loved each other. I know that despite what a cr.ap person Sophie is, you loved her dearly. Honey, talk to me." I blew out a breath as I plopped on the couch. I leaned my head back and stared at the ceiling. After a moment, Deb sat next to me. She didn't push me. She knew I'd start talking when I was ready. I just wasn't sure what to say, because I wasn't sure about anything to begin with. I was still processing the fact that I caught my best friend and fiancé in my bed together. They ruined my future, my Christmas, my perfect wedding venue. "I don't know what to do now," I admitted. "Sophie literally planned the entire thing. She knew what she was doing. The fact that they were planning a date in my apartment behind my back because they thought it was extra spicy makes me sick. Part of me thinks that I would have understood if it was something that just happened, but this... this was deliberate. I was a joke to them. So much so that they expected me to not only be okay with their relationship, but support them too. It makes me wonder what a doormat I've been all this time. All the times I just let Sophie have her way because I didn't really care. She mistook that for me being a pushover. And Theo... well, he's just a weak man. I thought he loved me though. I thought what we had was special, at least. That it meant something. And they were... they were my future. The one I'd been picturing in my head and planning for. And within seconds, like I didn't matter at all, it all came crumbling down, and now... Now, I don't know what to do." "You don't have to make any decisions right away," Deb said, grabbing my hand and squeezing. "Let him handle all the canceling of the wedding and-" "Oh god, how'd I forget to tell you that part?" I grumbled, interrupting her. "What part? Did he already cancel the wedding? That jack.bo..om!" She ranted. I shook my head and scoffed. "No, the wedding's still happening," I muttered. When Deb didn't reply, I looked up at her. All she did was blink at me. "Are you absolutely fu.cking kidding me?" She blurted, making me snort. Deb rarely ever curses and when she does, I always find it hilarious. She has this deadpan way of saying things. It's hilarious to me. "I don't know what to do, Deb," I said. "I mean, I even booked up this Christmas trip. A weekend in Colorado. I was going to surprise him with it. A little mini vacation before our wedding. A cabin in the woods. He'd never had a white Christmas before, and we used to go there with my parents... I feel like such a fool." "You shouldn't," she replied, tucking a strand of my curly hair behind my ear. "I think you should go. In fact, I think you should extend it. Leave Monday, stay until the New Year." "What?" I asked with wide eyes. "That's... like, like two full weeks. Are you insane??" "Deidra, you've worked nonstop since you were old enough to have a job," Deb said gently. "You've never taken a day off. I can manage the shop for that long. It's the holidays anyway. The shop will be closed most of the time. You and I never really do much other than dinner and exchanging gifts. We can do that when you get back. I think you deserve a little getaway. Somewhere that you won't have to be constantly reminded of your family and now this betrayal." "I don't know Deb," I mumbled. "I'd have to call and see if they can even do that for me." "Call first thing when you wake up," she told me. "I don't know about this," I said unsure. "Deidra, you've never done anything for yourself," she replied. "Please, do this for me. Do this in spite of those two. Go off, have the vacation of your life, flirt with every hot guy you see, take a breather, and when you come back... rub in their faces how much you don't care." "That's easier said than done Deb," I mumbled. "They'll think I ran away." "Let them," she replied with a shrug. "Deidra, this is your life, but it's never felt like you've been living it. Not to me anyway. You never got in trouble, never wanted to go out with your friends, never had a boyfriend. You've always stuck to yourself and worked your butt off. It's time for you to have some fun. Go experience life outside this town and your parents' shadows." "They'd probably want me to go too, huh?" I muttered. Deb beamed at me. "They most certainly would," she said. "And who knows? Maybe you'll get a Christmas miracle." "Okay, let's not push our luck," I replied. "Just go for it, Deid," she said gently. "Take a risk for once. Know that I have your back." I blew out a long breath. "Okay, fine, I'll do it," I declared, making Deb squeal. Maybe this is exactly what I need. A break from the town I love. Just a little breather. And maybe Deb is right. Maybe there will be some sort of Christmas miracle. Jinx's P.O.V. ******************************* "You gonna tell me why you decided to walk from school to town?" I asked Waylen once we were back at the clubhouse. We were still in my truck and I just parked in the lot. Waylen's only seven, and too young to ride my bike. And I doubted he'd even want to when he knew he was in trouble. I looked at my son in the rearview mirror. He was looking out the window, scowling at nothing. His blonde hair that's a shade lighter than mine is pulled back in a matching manbun. His blue/green eyes are pinned on the ground outside. Sometimes I still can't get over how much he looks like me. It pi.ssed Glory off to no end when she was around. Which just made the rest of us laugh. Until we truly realized how much of a piece of sh.it the wh.ore was. I'll never understand why I ever stuck my di.ck in her. Glory had wanted me since middle school. I fu.cked her on and off throughout the years. We never dated. I never dated anyone. I'm part of a fu.cking motorcycle club. It's hard to tie a brother down, and I definitely wasn't going to be tied down as a teenager. Glory was just a patch chaser anyway. She wanted me for the clout, my money, my brand. Never me. She just wanted a comfortable life. All throughout school, Glory made it her life's mission to steer any girl away from me. Of course, it never worked. Most of the time it backfired on her. Girls want what other girls tell them they can't have, I guess. Plus, I lived on club property with my parents. I might have been a teenager, but I was still allowed to party with the club sometimes. Which meant my pick of club bunnies on a nightly basis. Not that Thorn ever gave a fu.ck about me or who I fu.cked. Not sure what Glory was even thinking. Fu.cking women are batsh.it. I definitely never want an ol' lady. The old timers talk about how we'll change our tune when we meet "the one". How we'll know who the one is when we see her, but I don't know about that. I'm not worried about it though. No girl has ever interested me longer than a night. Except the one that also interests your son. I shook the thought from my head. I'm not going there. The fu.cking plant lady hates my guts and always has. I've just always admired her ability to not give a fu.ck, her need to be a loner, and now the way she cares about my son. That's it. Just a friendly... admiration. "I just wanted somewhere quiet to do my homework," Waylen mumbled in reply, still scowling out the window. I sighed as I looked around the outside of the clubhouse. Everything is decorated for Christmas. My mom and the other ol' ladies put the guys to work the moment Thanksgiving was over. The gate that lines our property has colorful lights hanging all down the front, the actual clubhouse is lined with the same colorful lights too. There's a Santa in a sleigh being pulled by all his reindeer on the roof. There are even light-up deer, trees, and a Christmas dinosaur in the yard. All for us, 'cause no one can see that sh.it through the gate. The things the old timers do for their women. "I know it's loud in the clubhouse, but we have our own house on the property, Way," I told him, trying to keep my tone even. I'm pi.ssed, yeah. My son didn't come home from school again, and I had the whole club out looking for him. Not only that, but I also got another call from his teacher today. Waylen shuts down if you yell at him though. He totally closes off. Because of his cu.nt of a mother. Something I didn't realize was going on until over a year ago. I don't want my son to shut down with me. I want him to know that I always have his back and that he can talk to me whenever he needs to. "I just like being with Dra," he mumbled with a sad look on his face. Dra. That nickname he has for her. She once told me that she hated nicknames. Of course, it was because I was calling her Thorn and Lily-pad every day, but still. I sound fu.cking pathetic being jealous over my own son. "Is this because you miss your mom?" I asked him. Waylen scoffed, giving me a look that screamed, "Are you serious right now?" "Okay, okay," I said before he could pop off about his mother. "Is it because of what you did at school today?" Waylen's eyes widened for a moment before he hung his head, frowning at the floor of my truck. "Miss Greene called you," he mumbled. "You want to tell me why you put a stink bomb in her purse? Or where you even got it from?" I asked. Waylen sighed, and fu.ck it was adorable. He makes it so hard to be upset. The kid has always acted older than he is, and it's always been adorable. He doesn't really have any friends either. He doesn't get along with the other kids at school for some reason. He's the only kid here too. The only other minors at the club are in high school. I feel bad that Waylen's such a loner. Even Deidra has that one friend, even if Sophie is fu.cking terrible. "I put it there because she dressed up today thinking you were picking me up from school," he replied. "She didn't know you told me to ride the bus." "And that means you had to put a stink bomb in her purse?" I asked, turning in my seat to give him a look. "She was dressing up for you!" he said, crossing his arms and frowning out the window. "Like how Mom used to. Because she wants your patch." Then his eyes snapped to me. "I heard her Dad. She wants your patch and to become an ol' lady. She was talking to other teachers about it and how she'd be able to quit that teaching job after she landed you. Whatever that means!" he said, his voice getting louder as he threw his arms up. "I don't like her, Dad. She's fake. Just like Mom was." I sighed and ran my hand through my hair. I have no idea how to even handle this. Did my dad go through this sh.it too? Were women constantly trying to paw at him despite my mom always being around? "I know you don't like her, Way, but... having a mom-figure in your life wouldn't be so bad, right?" I said, trying to figure out what it is my son really wants. Does he want a mom? Does he just want everyone to leave him alone? Miss Green is just one of many women like her. They see us in the grocery store and immediately try to hit on me. And Waylen always does some crazy sh.it to run them off. He even lit Chrissy Atkins hair on fire once. There was another time he threw a steaming cup of hot chocolate at some random woman who was trying to flirt with me through him. Maybe he really does just want to be left alone. Fu.ck, am I a bad father? "A mom-figure?" Waylen asked, giving me a curious look. "Yeah, someone who's like a mom, but not like your mom," I told him. "Someone more like Granny or even Aunt Birdie." Birdie is my older sister. She and her husband Adam live a couple of hours away. They often visit with their three kids, but not often enough if you ask Waylen. He loves his aunt and uncle, and even his cousins. Chance and Andrew are their oldest. Andrew and Waylen are the same age, and Chance is a year older. Rosie is their baby, she's only two. Pretty sure my kid's only friends are his cousins too. "You mean like Dra?" Waylen asked, and I sh.it you not, I choked on air at the question. "W-what?" I choked out, still coughing as I gave him a wide-eyed look. "Why would you say Thorn? She's not exactly... mother.ly." Of course, every interaction I've ever had with the woman was mostly her yelling at me in some way. Even if it was just with those stupidly bright hazel eyes of hers. The woman barely ever lets me finish a sentence. That's partly why I call her Thorn. 'Cause she's a thorn in my side. And Waylen only ever sees her when she's at work. Which is all the time, but still. "I think she is," Waylen said softly, sulking now. "She's nice to me. She ruffles my hair. She feeds me, and she even used to cut up my food at the diner, Dad. And you remember how she used to yell at Mom about being nicer to me? One time, she told Mom that she should be at home reading me a bedtime story and tucking me in." He said as he picked at a loose string on his jeans. "I bet Dra tells really good stories." My heart hurt for my kid. I haven't been doing good by him. None of us knew how fu.cking awful Glory really was until Deidra came storming into the clubhouse one night over a year ago. She had Waylen in her arms and refused to give him up until I promised I'd take him to the hospital for his fever. It wasn't until then, when I watched a woman who was practically a stranger, act all momma-bear with my cub, spouting off at the top of her lungs about how sh.it my baby momma was to an entire club full of bikers, that I actually did something about Glory. I should have kicked her out of the picture sooner. I thought she still loved Waylen despite the fact that she couldn't have me. At least some part of her. But I was wrong, and my son paid the price for it. She wasn't physically abusive, but she was abusive in every other way. Except for when she was around me or my brothers. But don't worry. I made that bit.ch pay. "Okay, look," I said to my son. "I don't know if we'll ever find you a mom, but maybe I can talk to Deidra about letting you hang out at Garden Sip for a little while every day, okay? She said you're always welcome, but I need to know where you are at all times. But you need to work with me, Way. You gotta stop with the pranks and running off on me, okay?" "Fine," he grumbled, drawling out the word. I sighed again before throwing my door open. "Come on, Granny's making cookies inside," I said as I opened his door. "Thanks Dad," he said as he hopped out of my truck. "For what? You're still in trouble," I asked. "For not yelling at me," he replied before heading towards the front door of the clubhouse. Fu.ck, what am I going to do with this kid? Jinx's P.O.V. ******************************* I followed behind my son as he made his way to the kitchen. The whole place was decorated with fake snow and other things on the walls like Santa, Christmas trees, candy canes, snowmen, and reindeer. There were colorful lights and garland lining the doorways and ceilings all throughout the clubhouse. Even the entire bartop in the bar was lined with lights. It's like this every year, but it seems they went even bigger this year. Mom was in the enormous kitchen with all the other ol' ladies. They were all around the same age as Mom and were like aunts to me. None of the younger generation had any ol' ladies. Not that many didn't try. All the ol' ladies do this same baking sh.it every year. They bake a ton of cookies and give them out around town. Waylen always gets to help decorate the sugar cookies and help hand them out, which he loves. "There's my WayWay!" Mom called out the moment she saw Waylen. He ran to her, throwing himself in her arms. "I see you found him," she said to me with her arms still wrapped around Waylen. "Can I help with the cookies Granny?" Waylen asked her. "We got a whole bunch set up for you over here, Way," Sara said, showing him to the table off to the side. The moment Waylen was seated and distracted thanks to Sara and cookies, Mom went right back to work. And by that, I mean with the cookies and harassing me. "So, where'd you find him?" she asked me. I blew out a breath as I sat on a stool across the kitchen island from her. "You'll never guess," I grumbled sarcastically. "The plant place again?" Lisa, another ol' lady asked. "It's called Garden Sip," Mom told her. "Wonderful place, no wonder the boy loves it there." I shook my head as I looked at my mom. I've got her eyes and smile, but I look more like my dad. Mom's hair is starting to gray more now. Her normally brown hair has been getting lighter, and now I can see silver streaked through it. Sometimes I wonder if it's me or Waylen that gives her those gray hairs. "How often have you even been there?" I asked her. "I buy flowers from Deidra at least every other week," she replied, frowning at me. "Where do you think the flowers in the common room come from?" "There are flowers in the common room?" I blurted, earning a flat look from my mother while the others cackled. Just then, Void and Villain walked in, plopping down on the stools next to me. Those two are my age, but a couple of fu.cking id.iots I tell you. Granted, they don't have responsibilities like I do. They're twins and work at the tattoo shop in town that Wraith, another brother, owns. We went to school together and have been best friends for as long as I can remember. But they fu.cking get on my nerves. "What y'all talking about?" Villain asked as he snatched a cookie off the counter. "Oh, just how Jinx found Waylen at Garden Sip earlier," Lisa told them. "Wow, you and your kid both got the hots for Deidra Hartman," Void teased, snorting as I gave him a flat look. "Oh please," Mom waved them off. "Waylen is too young to have the hots for anyone." That earned snickers all around as Mom gave me a cheeky smile. "I don't have the hots for her," I stated. "You have a nickname for her," Mom replied factually. "Yeah, you call her Thorn," Lisa added. "Because she's a thorn in my side," I grumbled. "Not because I like her." "Lies," Villain said as he took a bite of his cookie and kept talking while chewing. "One time when Jinx got really drunk, he told us that he calls her that because she's as beautiful as a rose, and prickly like one too." Mom and Lisa looked at me, trying not to laugh as I smacked Villain against the back of his head. "Does bro.therhood mean nothing to you?" I complained. "Just admit that you think Deidra's hot," he replied. "You like that attitude she gives you." "And only you if you haven't noticed," Void added. "Yeah, she sure loves to give you sh.it, brother," Villain teased me. "Whatever, Deidra's like that with everyone," I said. "Is she?" Void asked sarcastically. I shook my head, refusing to even give it any thought. "That sh.it don't matter anyway," I told them. "Waylen keeps going there because he's comfortable with Deidra, thanks to Glory always taking him to the diner and leaving him there." "Poor baby," Mom muttered sadly. "She was more of a mother to that boy than his actual mother ever was." "Ugh, don't say that," I complained. "I mean... you can't really deny that after she stormed in here ready to fight the entire club over your boy," Void said. "I'm not denying it, it's just... fu.cking weird," I admitted. "I appreciate what Thorn has done regarding my kid, but... her and I are practically strangers." "Practically," Mom muttered, rolling her eyes. "Well, Waylen loves being with her," Lisa said. "Doesn't that count for something to her?" "Yeah. Thorn loves him. Says he's always welcome there. Think I might talk to her about letting him go there every day after school. I don't think she'd mind," I said. "He promised me he'd behave if I did." "He promises a lot of things," Lisa commented lightly. "He's only seven," I replied. "Saw Miss Green today," Mom said, changing the subject. Fu.ck. "She showed up here while you were out, smelling to high heaven too," she continued as she rolled out some dough. "Told me about the stink bomb." I sighed heavily. "Stick bomb?" Villain asked with a laugh. "I'm trying, Mom," I said. "Waylen overheard her saying something about wanting my patch a while ago... I think he doesn't want another Glory coming into the picture." "Bet he said Deidra would make a good mommy," Villain mumbled with a wink. "Shut up," I complained, pushing him hard enough to knock him out of his chair and onto his a.ss on the floor. "He's mad 'cause I'm right," Villain grumbled as he got back on the stool. "Anyway, I don't know what to do other than pull him from school," I said. "What about getting him a different teacher?" Lisa asked. "Already tried," I replied. "School said they were taking her word over Waylen's because he was a kid and sometimes kids misunderstand things or lie, and that if I can't control my son, maybe I shouldn't have him in school at all." Lisa gasped and looked at my mom. "Oh, I went down there too," she said. "Fu.cking jacka.ss of a principal." "I just don't know what to do," I said again. "Waylen is just... bored here. There are no other kids to hang with. I'm not exactly nurturing like a mom would be." "Deidra Hartman's nurturing?" Void blurted with a raised brow, looking genuine. "Can we stop fu.cking bringing that woman into the conversation?" I snapped. "Fu.ck! With the way y'all act, you'd think she was the one I knocked up."

✨Click to watch👉👉Beauty and The Beta 💔‘Remember who I am Bailey. You are not above me. Never will be. Could have been equal to me at most had I seen you as suitable to be my mate, but no. You were beneath that honor.' He sneers.😡 🔥I felt anger racing through me. ‘And you think I would not have rejected you?' I snapped, moving back toward the exit, not wanting to be here anymore. Until I felt a hand grabbing the back of my tank top, yanking me back.😫 ⚠️‘You want to reject me? How dare you! Who else would want such a feeble pathetic wallflower like you? No one-' he said but was interrupted by a voice, which made him shiver.😮 💥‘I want her.' I looked at the clock on my bedroom wall. I think I have delayed the inevitable for as long as I physically can. I should go to the packhouse to go and wish our pack's upcoming Alpha a happy birthday. The bane of my life. My brother’s best friend. One day to be Alpha Miles. Today he will turn 17, and meet his Alpha wolf. In all honesty, he was egotistical enough, thinking the world revolved around him, without him adding to that by finally gaining his wolf. Not your run-of-the-mill werewolf either. Oh no, Miles Davenport was destined to be an Alpha, so he would have a strong and powerful Alpha wolf, only adding to his arrogance and strength. The crazy thing is, Miles had once upon a time been one of my closet friends too. In my younger childhood... Friends, that kind of thing comes when your father is the Beta to the Alpha. The children spend a lot of time together, and become friends. My older brother, Jordan, became the wing-man to Miles. His closest friend and ally, who as his Beta when the time came, was only right. But as the years went on, the friendship between Miles and I changed. Friendship faded as he grew into a more popular sports star of our school. At the end of the day, he was always going to be popular, he was the upcoming Alpha after all, but as one of the top sports stars too, he was idolized. As was my brother. All the girls in school flocked around them like they were pop stars or something, and it was bizarre. I was nothing more to him now but a source of amusement for him and his sports buddies. A geek. Not one of the beauty queens who followed him around. Simply someone to make fun of. I had gone from enjoying time with my one-day Alpha, to hating him, in the space of a school year. He thought he was god’s gift, and in all honesty, if he was, he is a gift I would return… “Bailey!” I heard my Mum call from downstairs, telling me I was definitely running it close now for time. I know Jordan had already headed over to the packhouse a while ago with my Dad to meet his friend and our Alpha. “I know.” I yelled back, looking at the books on my desk, desperate to continue with the assignment I was working on. I would so much rather continue working on the assignment and gain the additional credit available, work toward going to the college I want to go to instead of going to a party for the big-headed bully, I got to consider almost family, considering he was the son of my Dad’s best friend. I stood from my seat, and walked to my mirror, adjusting my black skater dress I had chosen to wear today. Something plain and simple, easy to blend into the background, but a dress all the same if anyone asked why I hadn’t made an effort. Along with my chunky black sandals, I looked presentable, not that anyone would be looking at me. Today, all eyes would be on the birthday boy, as they always were. He would make sure of that. I flicked back my curly brown hair, before I walked out of the door, already dreading the hours that lay ahead… My Mum pulled the car into the parking spaces outside the packhouse, while my younger sister Morgan was flicking at the curls around my head, simply trying to irritate me. She knew I would rather be anywhere but here right now, and was loving every last moment of it. “Aww, you want to go home Bailey-boo?” she teased. “Stop you two, come on, your Dad is waiting inside. Let us go and find the birthday boy.” Mum says, sounding cheerful, completely oblivious to the fact how horrendous this party had the potential to be. She, too, worshiped Miles. Having seen him grow up alongside my brother, she seemed to think the sun shone out of his rear-end. It had always driven me insane. “He won’t even notice us there.” I muttered under my breath as I followed her up the steps of the back house, shaking my head at my sister and how overdressed she looked. She definitely looked like she was out to impress someone today. A small part of me wondered if she hoped she might be the fated mate of Miles. After all, he was meeting his Alpha wolf today. He will have shifted for the first time today, and today could potentially be the day he can sense his fated mate out there waiting for him! There had been so much buzz around school about this, so many of the girls were excited about the potential possibility they could be his fated mate. The one chosen for him by the moon goddess. The one destined to be with him. So many of them are desperate for it to be them. While there I was desperate for anything but. I could think of nothing worse! Yet, looking at the amount of effort my younger sister had made today, I am beginning to think she was one of the many she-wolves that was holding out that hope… We walked through the corridors of the packhouse, and it was filled with various pack members. Today was a day of celebration within pack, the birthday of the upcoming Alpha. And not just any birthday, the day he came of age. The day he met his Alpha wolf. The walls of the packhouse were adorned with decorations, music was blaring from various speakers dotted around the multiple rooms. “Ooff, sorry!” a giggling she-wolf said to me as she nearly knocked me off my feet as she knocked into me. I would rather be anywhere but here right now. This was far too hectic and far too loud for me. I simply glare at the back of the girl as she moves away from me, not a care in the world. I followed my Mum and my sister, who was almost skipping as she walked, toward the main lounge area. I can only assume my Mum had mindlinked my Dad to let him know we had arrived, and he said they were there, or else we could spend all day looking around for them! It appeared almost every member of the pack had turned up to celebrate the birthday of Miles Davenport. The lounge area was laden with people, music truly blasting, and everyone seeming to have a good time. Everyone but me. I caught the eye of my brother, leaning against the wall of the lounge, the furthest away from the door we had just walked into. He nodded in my direction before simply turning away. ‘Could have made an effort, Bailey.’ he mindlinked. ‘It is a birthday, not a funeral, you know?’ I felt my heart sink at his words. Great, the insults were starting already, which meant it would only be a matter of time until Miles started too. The two of them seemed to like working together like that. Finding great enjoyment in harassing me. I was only a year younger than both of them, and had desperately hoped the name-calling and insulting would ease off as they got a little older, but if anything, they seemed to get worse. All because I wasn’t like the girls they were interested in, I was sure of it. I wasn’t like the other girls. Made myself an easy target, my Mum told me, all because I enjoyed studying. Liked reading and learning. Said, I only made it harder for myself. The plan was to make it easier for myself by finding a way out… “Jordan says your dress looks like you are going to a funeral, Bailey.” Morgan teased, fluffing up my curls again. My long brown hair fell in thick, unruly curls down my back. They drove me mad at times. Especially when my brother and sister decide to mess with them. “Oh well, I wore a dress, like you asked.” I snapped, moving away from them, feeling angry already, so tempted just to turn around and walk home, only to be pulled back by my Mum. “We are going to wish Miles a happy birthday. You will stay for a while at least. I do not need to be explaining to your Aunt and Uncle yet again why you have walked out on a social event, Bailey.” Mum warned me, her tone sounding grumpy, I swear she had to have read my thoughts on leaving the party already. I am sure she hated having me as a daughter, likely wishing for one that was more sociable, and one that enjoyed being a part of everything, instead of one that would rather have her head in a book. “Awww, Happy Birthday, Miles!” I heard my sister squeal from by my side. I swear she spoke at a pitch so high only dogs could hear. Goddess knows why she is so excited. It is only his birthday. He likely doesn’t even care, he never normally does… As I looked up, his blue eyes were locked on me, I raised my gaze to meet his, and could see his eyes shift to a darker blue… was that his wolf? I see a snarl across his face as he suddenly storms from the room. What was that about? ‘Get out here.’ Miles is suddenly mindlinking me, and I have to say he sounded far from impressed. That, combined with the angry expression on his face, told me something was off. Would he have rather I had not come? Well, he was not the only one… ‘What?’ I questioned, completely confused. Was he annoyed over how I had dressed too? Jeez, it was just a dress. Does it really matter? I would go home if it was. ‘Outside now.’ He demanded once more, sounding even more irritated this time, making me realize I had little choice but to follow his orders, so I snuck away from the ongoing party back to the doors of the packhouse. Only to find Miles pacing along the bottom of the steps, looking a mixture of confused and angry. So why did he need me here? Someone to take his anger out on? I was not willing to be that, I was sure about that… Just as I was about to walk away, he looked up. “Crap took you long enough.” He snapped. I frowned, unsure what this was all about, but it was making no sense to me as I looked down toward him from where I stood at the top of the packhouse steps. His blue eyes shifted to the dark blue once more, like they had inside, taking me by surprise. His wolf is clearly lingering… “What is wrong, Miles? Do you want me to get Jordan?” I asked. “No I do not! I do not want anyone knowing this.” He snarls, a growl slipping from his lips, though whether that was aimed at me or whether his wolf was angry at him, I do not know… “I don’t think I understand…” I began. “You soon will.” He sneers, and I simply look to him in confusion. Nothing he says makes sense to me. Until he continues. “Only today did I realize. The thought makes me sick. Why our own moon goddess would play a trick like this on me, I don’t know. I am an Alpha. An Alpha. I deserve a strong mate. A beautiful mate to be proud of. Not some feeble pathetic wallflower.” My body trembles at his words. No. I had yet to gain my wolf. I did not know this yet. Why… Why him of all people? “I am your fated mate?” I question with a shaky voice. “Are you sure?” “Are you doubting me?” he yells. “And you won’t be. The moment you have your wolf, I will decide when the time is right to reject you.” My heart twists and contorts at the thought. Rejection was meant to be the most painful thing possible. Why would he want to reject the mate chosen for him by our own moon goddess? Am I truly so repulsive? A Year Later Yet another birthday party for our beloved upcoming Alpha. Ha. Not my beloved upcoming Alpha. I hated the man. Breaking my heart without a second thought. What I had done to deserve that I had never got a proper explanation from him. Other than the frequent insults, of why would he want to be with someone like me? Did I look like Luna material to him? I had no clue. What did Luna material look like in his eyes? Some blond bimbo, no doubt. They were the she-wolves he tended to spend his time with within our pack. The ones who worshiped the ground he walked on. That would do anything he asked of them. Ones that I highly doubted read much more than the work set of them at school. “Bailey!” my Mum yelled at me from the stairway of our family home. “Will you hurry up?!” “Do I really need to come to the party?” I responded. “I am telling you, Miles will not be bothered if I am not there!” “Your Aunt and Uncle will be though. And I am not explaining to them again why you are missing.” My Mum continues yelling. “Do you not realize just how many events you have missed this year, all because you have your head in a book?” “Yeah Bai-Bai. Such a geek. No wonder you have no friends.” My sister Morgan giggles from outside my bedroom door. “Piss off.” I hissed. “I have friends.” I stormed from my room, and down the stairs toward my waiting family. I planned to greet the birthday boy, not that he would care in the slightest. I know that he would rather not see me at all. And then I would sneak home. “Ew, are you wearing that?” Morgan asked. I looked down at the skinny black trousers I had on and the white tank top. Great. I can’t win. Nothing I wear is approved of by my sister, evidently named the fashion queen without my knowledge. Oh well, I am dressed and wearing it. I think it looked good with my chunky black sandals I had on… I scowled at my sister and walked out of the door. “Are we going or not?” I snapped at them all, truly not able to wait for the following month when I leave to go to university. Get away from them, and this pack! The party was well underway when we arrived, music pounding from the speakers as couples made out in every available space, so I averted my eyes as we walked through the corridors of the packhouse to the lounge where we would no doubt find Miles reigning over his people. Being all important, like he was partial to considering himself. ‘Why are you here?’ Miles’s voice filled my mindlink, before I had even fully entered the room behind my parents. Great. ‘I didn’t get a choice. Trust me, I would rather not be.’ I snapped back. I was getting more than a little tired of the way he would treat me. Yes, he planned on rejecting me. Decided I was not for him, but he could have left it at that. I didn’t need treating like I was some sort of social pariah because of the fact he decided I was not right for him. I do not think I deserved that. I had endured enough bullying through my time in high school, for the fact I enjoyed my education. ‘Oh. Excuse me? Are you implying you were not going to come to the party of your next Alpha?’ Miles links with some serious attitude. ‘Miles, you just asked why I had bothered coming. Now you are asking if I was not going to come? Make your mind up.’ I argued. ‘Remember who I am Bailey. You are not above me. Never will be. Could have been equal to me at most had I seen you as suitable to be my mate, but no. You were beneath that honor.’ He sneers. I felt anger racing through me. ‘And you think I would not have rejected you?’ I snapped, moving back toward the exit, not wanting to be here anymore. Until I felt a hand grabbing the back of my tank top, yanking me back. My eyes darted upward to see the dark eyes of Miles. Sneering down at me. Our Pack’s upcoming Alpha. The most arrogant man I think I have ever met. One, thankfully, I did not have to be mates with any longer as the stupid had chosen to reject his own fated mate before even giving her a chance. “Going somewhere Bailey?” he asked, his voice full of spite. “Well, I do believe you asked me why I was here, so I assumed you wanted me to leave.” I told him. Miles bows his head down so it is level with mine, he inhales deeply, like he still enjoys the scent of me. He has done this numerous times of late, which I find quite bizarre. But, I ignore him as he tilts his head to look at me, “Hmm, I think my Mum and Dad may have something to say if you leave. Their clever little Bailey. Heaven forbid.” He presses his forehead against mine. “Just stay away from me, and do not spoil my fun.” I shake my head in disbelief at him, as he stalks away. Did he even think for a moment I would be going near him if I could avoid it? I would rather be anywhere but near him! “Bailey, why are you harassing my friend for?” I heard my brother, Jordan demand, as he suddenly approached, causing many people to turn around and look at me. Wonderful. Nothing like starting pack gossip is there. I am sure Miles would appreciate that! “I wasn’t harassing him, he came to speak to me. Asking why I had come.” I told him, and my brother laughed. He is as much an idiot as Miles. Any of my friends who have big brothers hate how protective they are. Me? No, my big brother is the one leading all the bullying and treating me badly. He finds great embarrassment in the fact his younger sister is far from being one of the popular group, and is, in his words, ‘far too into her books’. I think, in all honesty, my entire family found me, in one way or another, a huge embarrassment. “Well, he has a point. Not like you will be joining in with the celebrations. You will probably be sitting in a quiet corner somewhere reading.” He teases. “Well, it is certainly more intellectually pleasing than any of you would be.” I smirked at him as I walked away from my brother who was standing looking confused. I am sure he had no clue what I meant. The scary thing is he will be the next, pack Beta. Heaven help our pack. Between him and Miles they only had one brain cell between them, and that was one that they shared, I am sure of it! And even then, I think it was rechargeable and started losing power and knowledge at a rapid rate! They only graduated high school because they paid people to do their work for them. As I snuck away, out of the busy lounge to the top of the stairway, where I hoped to hide out for as long as possible, I heard footsteps behind me. I quickly turned, hoping it was simply someone on their way to their bedroom or even to one of the spare bathrooms on this floor. But, sadly, luck was not on my side tonight. No. Miles was following me. Eyebrows raised and looking quite irritated. “Oi. I want to talk to you.” he demanded. “You asked me to go away a minute ago, didn’t you?” I asked him. “Don’t think so, think it was more a case of why you were here.” Miles says with a smirk. Sitting on the top step with me. “Miles, you have the whole pack here for your birthday, I am sure whatever you need to speak to me about can wait.” I shrugged, desperately craving peace, which, considering the pounding beat of the music playing, would be difficult. “No. Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving?” he questions, like he is irate at the fact I had not let him know. Why would I let him know? “Why would I? We aren’t friends, Miles. You also are not my Alpha yet. It was arranged with my parents, me and your Dad, as Alpha.” I explained to him, unsure why this would even bother him. If anything, I would think he would be glad to get rid of me. “You are going away though.” he murmurs. “That is generally what happens when you go to college or university. Yeah.” I said with another shrug. “There wasn’t one closer to home?” he hisses. “Because it seems to me you picked the one furthest away.” “What does it matter to you? You hate me. I won't be here, You get your wish of being rid of me.” I snapped, truly sick of him trying to dictate to me what I should and shouldn’t be doing. I had worked hard in school, so I could do this. My parents had spoken to my Aunt and Uncle, the Luna and Alpha of our pack to allow me special permission to go to a university out of state to study, saying it was what I had dreamed of. I had nothing holding me back. And, with the fact Miles did not want me for his mate, or his Luna, I truly did not. Not that any of them knew of that. That was our own secret. Even despite the pull to him as my mate since my wolf had arrived, I still found him truly repulsive. He sickened me. Though, the pains when he slept with the many she-wolves that visited his bed, made it even easier to detest the man that he had become. I still had no clue what I had done to deserve this treatment from this man, other than not being one of the popular group. But, I knew I deserved better than him. Miles glanced at me, momentarily a thoughtful look passed over his face, almost caring, before a hardness replaced it. “That much is true. No more having to see the disappointing failure the moon goddess made of mating me to you. At least not for a few years. Who knows, perhaps you will meet someone while there. I suggest you do. That way you won’t have to come back, because, I, as Alpha, will be looking for my Luna.” “Miles, I honestly do not care if you find someone else.” I told him, going to stand and head home, not wishing to spend another moment in the same place as him. As I went to move away, he grabbed my hand, pulling me to him, so I was once more sitting level with him on the top step of the first floor landing of our packhouse. “Always so righteous aren’t you Bailey? You say you don’t care? We will see. Well, this will be on my terms. I, Miles Davenport, reject you, Bailey West, as my fated mate…” he began, and my head began to whirl as his words sunk in. The realization and excruciating pain of what was happening becoming too much for me…

The day we planned to come out, Daniel got a life-threatening task from my father. Before leaving, Daniel promised to marry me if he returned alive. For three years, I turned down all suitors and waited for him. Three years later, he came back. One leg ruined, a finger partially severed, a fresh scar bisecting his face. He dropped to one knee before my father. “Sir,” he said. “I trade my goods for your permission to marry Ava.” Ava stood beside him, one hand resting protectively on her pronounced belly. My father’s eyes flickered to me. Everyone knew that if I wanted to, I could burn this all to the ground. But I only looked at the girl and said, “Congratulations.” For three years, family match files stacked up all around my room. I pulled one out at random and decided to get married. On my wedding day, Daniel stood in front of my car, a gun in his hand. “If you marry him today,” he said, “I’ll kill him.” ... Of the seven most important men under my father’s command, Daniel Roman ranked last. He was the best-looking of them all, and I had been in love with him since I was a girl. My father later said that if he had known about us, he never would have given Daniel that assignment. Of the seven, Daniel was the best fighter. If even he couldn’t make it back, no one else stood a chance. But that job had been three long years ago. “Miss Willa, Daniel is back.” My eyes flew open. I ran from my room without even stopping for shoes. The butler intercepted me in the hall. “Miss Willa…” I took one look at his face and knew something was wrong. “I understand.” I grabbed an umbrella and went outside. The rain was coming down in sheets. I walked so quickly the hem of my dress was soon soaked through. The front hall was crowded. My father’s men were all standing under the portico. Some looked relieved. Others looked furious. I couldn’t tell what they were angry about. “Dad.......

Victor's text hit Elara's phone at 9:47 PM. *Final notice. 48 hours or we seize the house.* She read it three times in the bathroom stall of the Thorne Dynamics ballroom, her hands shaking hard enough to nearly drop the phone into the toilet. Outside, two hundred of New York's elite celebrated another record quarter. Inside this stall, Elara's life was collapsing. Seven figures. That's what the debt had become over ten years. Medical bills from Leo's leukemia. Her mother's cancer treatment. Her father's gambling addiction. Numbers that had stopped feeling real and started feeling like a life sentence. The fire stairwell was empty. She kicked off her heels, and sat on the concrete steps. Sipping the remaining champagne, it was the 5th glass she’s had, pulling her knees to her chest, her expensive navy dress bunching around her thighs. Professional. Composed. That's what she'd been for three years as Marcus Thorne's executive assistant, you have to be, if you work for Marcus you’ll know he's the Devil in Dior. The stairwell door opened. Marcus descended slowly, his jacket unbuttoned, his tie loosened. The dim light caught the sharp angles of his face, carved jaw, dark eyes that missed nothing. He stopped two steps above her. He’s the type of man that turns heads when he enters a place, handsome? Yes, sexy? Yes, when it comes to work? a nightmare in black suits "You left the gala," he said. "I needed air." "You've been gone for eleven minutes." He moved closer. "I don't employ people who disappear." She looked away. "I’m sorry it was a family emergency, there's nothing you can fix." "Try me." Three years working under him, he literally gets off making her life miserable. Unreal goals, Inhuman workload, impossible deadlines, yet she always delivered and made sure she'd maintained perfect distance. Hated his guts, he was always set out to make her work difficult. Now, drunk on champagne and desperation, she felt it crumble. "My brother. Financial trouble. A debt collector. One hundred and fifty thousand dollars by tomorrow." He pulled out his phone immediately. "No." She grabbed his wrist. "You can't just…." "You work for me. Your problems are containable." His eyes locked on hers. "We're going to contain this." Something broke open inside her. For the first time in three years, she wasn't alone with it. He reached out, and for a terrifying second, she thought he would touch her face. Instead, his fingers brushed the collar of her dress, adjusting the thin strap where it had slipped on her shoulder. “Let go of control, just for a moment,” he said, his thumb resting where her neck met her shoulder, the heat searing her skin. "I can't," she whispered. "Yes, you can." He closed the final inch, ran his hands through her short dress, Elara felt electric waves through her. His mouth descended, not with the arrogance of a boss, it was gentle but with the demanding hunger of a man who had not been with anyone for too long. She kissed him back. It wasn't tender. It was desperate, her mouth against his, tasting cologne and expensive scotch. She expected him to pull away. Marcus Thorne didn't blur professional lines. Marcus didn't blur anything. Instead, he kissed her again. His hand gripped the back of her head, fingers tangling in her hair, destroying the careful pins. The other hand pulled her close until there was no space between them. He tasted like control and power, and she wanted to drown in it. He spun her around and pressed her back against the brick wall. His mouth moved to her neck, sucking hard enough to leave marks she'd have to hide tomorrow. "Tell me to stop," he said against her skin. She didn't. She pulled his shirt up instead, needing to feel him. His chest was solid muscle, warm skin stretched over ribs she could feel under her palms. He made a sound, almost a growl and then his hands were everywhere. Her dress was hiked up around her waist. His fingers found the edge of her underwear and tore them away completely, the fabric ripping in his grip. "Fuck," he breathed. "You're soaked." He didn't waste time. His hand pressed between her thighs, fingers sliding inside her, and she gasped into his neck. His thumb found her clit and worked it in rough circles while his fingers pumped deeper, fingering her so hard. She could feel her own wetness coating his hand, dripping down her inner thighs. He moved the other free hand pressing her boobs and sucking on it passionately, tongue curling around the nipple and biting softly yet hardly. Her hips rocked against his hand desperately. This was insane. This was career suicide. This was….Damn she hates her boss, how’s this possible, she tried to stop but she couldn’t, the champagne was hitting harder now. He stopped and stepped back just far enough to unbuckle his belt. His pants dropped. Already hard and thick, stroking it once before reaching for his wallet. "Don't you fucking move," he said. He tore open a condom with his teeth and rolled it on with one hand while the other gripped her hip, keeping her pinned against the wall. Then he positioned himself and pushed inside her in one hard stroke. Elara's cry echoed off the concrete walls. He was big, bigger than she'd expected, filling her completely, stretching her almost to the point of pain. He didn't give her time to adjust. He pulled out and thrust back in, establishing a brutal rhythm that knocked her back against the brick with each movement. "Is this what you wanted?" he demanded, his voice rough. "Is this why you kissed me?" She couldn't answer. Could barely breathe. He was hitting something deep inside her that made her vision blur. His hand moved from her hip to grip her thigh, pulling her leg up and around his waist, changing the angle, going even deeper. The cold wall at her back. His heat pressing against her front. The sound of their bodies colliding in the empty stairwell, wet and urgent and absolutely forbidden. "Fuck, you're tight," he groaned. "So fucking tight." He was hitting so fast and rough and didn’t notice the condom had broken. The pleasure was insane. Her orgasm built fast, a pressure that started at her core and radiated outward. She dug her fingernails into his shoulders, tasting blood from biting her own lip. "Come," he commanded. She did. Hard and sudden, her muscles clenching around him as pleasure ripped through her body. She bit down on his neck to keep from screaming. He followed seconds later, his hips jerking erratically as he finished inside her, his breath harsh against her ear. For a moment, they stayed pressed together, both breathing hard, still connected. Then he pulled away. His expression was already closing off, back to the nonchalant ceo. He fixed his pants with mechanical precision while she slid down the wall, her legs shaking so badly she could barely stand. "That didn’t happen," he said quietly. Her heart dropped in her stomach. "Marcus" "Go home. It’s Christmas holiday, see you at work next week, make sure you’re early." He didn't look at her. "This won't happen again." He left before she could respond, his footsteps disappearing up the stairs. Elara sat alone on the concrete, her dress torn, his marks on her skin, and realized she'd just made the worst decision of her life. It was 1 week later when she bought the first pregnancy test. Then four more after that just to be sure. Shit!!! what the fuck have i done. Two Pink Lines It had been a week since Elara slept with the devil. Christmas wasn’t supposed to feel like this. The holiday was meant for family dinners and bad movies, not sterile hospital hallways that smelled like bleach and something darker she couldn’t name. But here she was, Day seven of her vacation, sitting in the uncomfortable plastic chair beside her mother’s bed, pretending everything would be fine. Her phone buzzed. Another email from Marcus. *Subject: Q4 Report - Revisions Needed* She opened the attachment. Forty-three pages of financial projections that needed reformatting by tomorrow. On Christmas week. Because Marcus Thorne didn’t believe in holidays, only deadlines. “You’re working again,” her mother said softly. Elara looked up. Her mother’s face had that grey pallor that came with stage three cancer, her cheeks hollow, but her eyes were still sharp. Still watching everything. “Just a quick edit.” Elara locked her phone and forced a smile. “Nothing major.” “You work too hard, baby.” “The job pays well, Mama. Really well.” The lie tasted bitter. Her savings account had $3,000 left after this month’s payment to Victor. The chemo her mother needed cost $80,000. “I’ve got it covered. The treatment, everything. You just focus on getting better.” Her mother’s thin hand reached out, wrapping around Elara’s wrist. “I don’t want you sacrificing your life for me.” “I’m not sacrificing anything.” Elara squeezed back gently, careful of the IV line. “You took care of me my whole life. It’s my turn now.” “Has your father come by?” The question landed like a stone in still water. “No.” Elara kept her voice neutral. “Haven’t seen him all week.” “Elara…” “And I’m praying it stays that way.” She couldn’t hide the edge in her tone. “Luca showing up only means he needs money or he’s running from someone he owes. Either way, it’s trouble we don’t need right now.” Her mother’s eyes filled with that particular sadness that came from loving a man who kept breaking her heart. “He’s still your father.” “He’s a gambling addict who put us in this mess.” Elara stood, smoothing down her jeans. “I need to head home, but I’ll be back tomorrow morning. Earlier if you need me.” “You’re a good girl, Elara. Too good for all this.” Elara kissed her mother’s forehead, tasting the salt of unshed tears she refused to let fall. “Get some rest, Mama. I love you.” “Love you too, baby.” The taxi ride home was quiet. Elara stared out the window at the Christmas lights strung across brownstones, families visible through warm windows, living lives that didn’t involve debt collectors and dying mothers and mistakes made in fire exits. She pulled out her phone, mindlessly scrolling through Instagram. Mimi had posted pictures from her campus in London, surrounded by friends at some holiday party. Elara double-tapped the image, feeling the distance between them like a physical ache. The next post was one of those viral memes. A girl holding up twelve fingers with the caption: *Period check. 12/12 months DONE. We survived besties.* Elara’s thumb froze mid-scroll. Twelve months. When was the last time she’d gotten hers? She tried to think back. November had been hell at work with the annual report. October… she couldn’t remember. Everything blurred together in a haze of hospital visits and late nights at the office and Victor’s constant threats. But she’d gotten it in November. She was sure. Maybe. Possibly. Her heart started doing something uncomfortable in her chest. “Miss? We’re here.” The taxi driver was watching her in the rearview mirror. Elara paid quickly, her hands shaking as she handed over crumpled bills. The bodega on the corner was still open, fluorescent lights harsh against the darkening street. She walked in like she was in a dream, past the rows of chips and energy drinks, to the back wall where the pharmacy items were kept. Pregnancy tests. An entire shelf of them. This was stupid. She was being paranoid. Stress could delay periods. She’d read that somewhere. And they’d used a condom. Marcus had used a condom. She’d seen him put it on. But intrusive thoughts were a bitch, and Elara had never been good at leaving questions unanswered. She grabbed the cheapest box and paid without making eye contact with the cashier. Her apartment was dark and cold. She hadn’t been home much this week, spending most nights on the hospital’s uncomfortable chairs. The space felt foreign now, like it belonged to a different version of herself. One who hadn’t fucked her boss in a stairwell. The bathroom light flickered twice before staying on. Elara tore open the box with shaking hands, reading instructions she already knew by heart from countless pregnancy scares in college that had amounted to nothing. Pee on the stick. Wait three minutes. One line meant not pregnant. Two lines meant… She didn’t let herself finish the thought. The test felt absurdly light in her hand. Such a small thing to hold so much weight. She did what needed to be done, set the stick on the edge of the sink, and pulled out her phone to set a timer. Three minutes. She couldn’t watch it. Instead, she sat on the closed toilet lid and stared at the cracked tile on the floor, counting the seconds in her head because the silence was too loud. Her phone buzzed. Another email from Marcus. She didn’t open it. The timer went off. Elara stood slowly, like her bones had aged a decade in three minutes. She picked up the test with hands that didn’t feel like her own. Two pink lines. Clear as day. Unmistakable. She bought four more tests from three different bodegas, spacing them out so the cashiers wouldn’t remember her face. Took them all within an hour, lining them up on the bathroom counter like evidence at a crime scene. Two lines. Two lines. Two lines. Two lines. Elara sat on her bathroom floor as the reality settled into her bones. She was pregnant. With Marcus Thorne’s baby. “Shit.” Her voice cracked. “What the fuck have I done?“ The Devil’s Proposal Elara hailed a taxi, dropped into the back seat, the taxi smelled like stale coffee. Elara rummaged through her tote bag for the third time, fingers brushing past lip gloss and crumpled receipts, searching for the USB drive that held Marcus’s edited Q4 reports. If she’d left it on her kitchen counter, she was dead. Not metaphorically dead. Actually dead. Marcus Thorne would fire her on the spot, and worse, he’d do it with that blank expression that made you feel like an insect he’d stepped on without noticing. Her fingers closed around the small drive. She exhaled. “Rough morning?” the driver asked, glancing at her in the rearview mirror. “You have no idea.” Rough didn’t cover it. The past week had been hell wrapped in a nightmare and served cold. She’d worked through Christmas, editing financial projections while her mother slept in a hospital bed and five pregnancy tests sat hidden in her bathroom drawer like evidence of a crime she couldn’t undo. And Marcus. God, Marcus had made sure she earned every cent of her salary. Emails at 2 AM. Revision requests on Christmas Day. A forty-page report that needed complete reformatting because he decided he didn’t like the font. The man was the devil in Dior. No, worse. He was heartless in Hugo Boss. Satan in Suitsupply. Why not just quit? The question had been circling her brain for three years like a vulture. Because she couldn’t. Before this job, she’d been a janitor at a corporate office in Manhattan, mopping floors at 5 AM and dodging the eyes of executives who looked through her like she was furniture. Jobs were scarce when you didn’t have connections or a degree from the right school. And this job, for all its hell, paid well. Well enough that her mother had a hospital bed instead of dying on a clinic floor. Well enough that Leo, her junior brother, could stay in community college. Well enough that she could keep Victor, the debt collector from taking the last thing they owned. The taxi pulled up to Thorne Dynamics Tower, all glass and steel stretching into the grey January sky like a middle finger to everyone who couldn’t afford to work there. Elara paid the driver and stepped onto the sidewalk. The building loomed above her. She made the sign of the cross, muttering under her breath, “Dear God, about to work with the devil again today. Keep me safe.” It was sarcastic. Mostly. The lobby was already buzzing with employees, everyone moving with that particular Monday morning energy that felt more like a death march than a workday. Elara checked her phone. 8:47 AM. She was late. “Elara!” She turned to find Emeka striding toward her, coffee in one hand, his designer scarf draped over his shoulder like he was walking a runway instead of heading to accounting. He looked her up and down, eyebrows rising dramatically. “Girl, you’re glowing. What happened during the holiday? You met someone?” “Emeks, I’m late. Can we not?” “Oh, we’re absolutely doing this.” He fell into step beside her as they headed toward the elevators. “You’ve got that glow. That ‘I had good sex’ glow. Spill.” “There’s nothing to spill.” “Lies. I can smell lies, babe, and you reek of them.” Elara’s phone buzzed in her hand. She glanced down at the screen. *Mr. Thorne: My office. Now.* Her stomach dropped to her feet. Emeka leaned over her shoulder, reading the message. “Is that the devil?” She nodded, her mouth suddenly dry. “Well, don’t keep him waiting.” Emeka’s grin turned wicked. “Go on before he drops hell on earth. And babe? Whatever you did during Christmas, do it again. That glow is everything.” Elara didn’t respond. She was already moving toward the private elevator that led directly to Marcus’s top-floor office, her heels clicking against the marble like a countdown. The ride up felt like drowning in slow motion. She stared at her reflection in the polished steel doors. Dark circles under her eyes that concealer couldn’t quite hide. Hair pulled back in a tight bun that made her look professional and miserable. She looked like someone who’d spent the week having a mental breakdown in installments. The doors opened with a soft chime. Marcus’s office was exactly as she remembered. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Minimalist furniture that probably cost more than her annual salary. Everything is cold, clean, controlled. Just like him. He stood behind his desk, hands in his pockets, staring out at the skyline. He didn’t turn when she entered. “Good morning, Mr. Thorne.” Silence. She stayed by the door, clutching her bag like a shield. The air in the room felt heavy, charged with something she couldn’t name. Her mind raced. Did he know? Had he somehow found out about the pregnancy? Was this the part where he fired her for unprofessional conduct and she lost everything? “Sit.” It wasn’t a request. Elara moved to the chair across from his desk, lowering herself slowly. Her hands were shaking. She clasped them together in her lap, willing them to stop. Marcus turned finally, his dark eyes locking onto hers. His expression gave away nothing. No anger. No warmth. Nothing. He looked at her the way someone might look at a contract they were considering signing. The silence stretched. Ten seconds. Twenty. She was about to break, about to say something, anything to fill the terrible quiet, when he spoke. “Marry me.” Elara blinked. The words didn’t make sense. They were English, she understood English, but strung together like that they became nonsense. Her brain scrambled to process. Did he hit his head over Christmas? Did he think the sex in the stairwell meant something? Did he somehow know about the pregnancy and this was his twisted solution? “I…..” “Should I repeat myself?” His voice was calm. Too calm. The kind of calm that came before hurricanes. Elara’s mouth opened. Closed. It opened again. No sound came out. Her heart was doing something violent in her chest, slamming against her ribs like it was trying to escape. Marcus Thorne, her boss, the devil who’d made her life hell for three years, the man who’d fucked her in a fire exit and then dismissed her with cold finality, had just asked her to marry him. And judging by the look on his face, he wasn’t joking. My devil on earth had just made it official. One Million Reason “Marry me.” The words hung in the air between them like smoke. Elara stared at Marcus, waiting for the punchline, the smirk, anything that would indicate this was some elaborate joke at her expense. Nothing came. Is this man insane? “You heard me.” His tone was flat, like he’d just asked her to schedule a meeting, not commit to a lifetime legal bond. God, she despised this man. “What is this?” Her voice came out sharper than intended. “Some kind of mental breakdown? A psychological experiment? The physical workload wasn’t torture enough, so now we’re moving into emotional manipulation?” “Marry me, and I will…..” “No.” The word came out loud. Too loud. Sharp enough to cut through the thick glass walls of his office and reach the assistants stationed outside. She saw heads turn, eyes widening before quickly looking away. Marcus blinked. It was the first genuine reaction she’d seen from him in three years. Actual surprise flickering across his face before the mask slammed back down. “No?” “Should I say it in French? Morse code? Sign language?” Elara’s hands were shaking again, but this time it wasn’t fear. It was rage. Pure, undiluted rage at this man who thought he could control everything, including her. “Which translation works best for you, Mr. Thorne?” “You haven’t even heard my offer.” “I’m not interested in whatever twisted game you’ve cooked up in that calculating brain of yours.” She stood, chair scraping against the floor. “Find another assistant to play with.” Marcus watched her like she was a puzzle he couldn’t solve. The look on his face was almost comical. Almost. She’d just become the first person in Thorne Dynamics history to tell Marcus Thorne no, and he genuinely didn’t know how to process it. Elara turned to leave. “One million.” She stopped. Her hand was on the door handle, fingers frozen mid-grip. “One million what?” “Dollars.” Slowly, she turned back around. Marcus hadn’t moved. He stood behind his desk, hands still in his pockets, expression carefully neutral except for that slight tightness around his eyes that suggested he was recalculating every assumption he’d made about this conversation. “One million dollars,” she repeated. The number felt absurd in her mouth. Fake. Like Monopoly money. “For what? A year? Six months? How long does this arrangement last?” “Two years. A marriage contract. You play the role of my wife. After twenty four months, we divorce. You walk away with the money.” Elara laughed. It came out bitter and sharp. “You think you can just throw money at me? After three years of treating me like I’m nothing? Like I’m some object you keep in that office to make your life easier?” She took a step closer to his desk. “All the impossible deadlines. The emails at 3 AM. The constant criticism. The way you look through me like I’m invisible. And now you want me to marry you?” “It’s a business transaction.” “It’s insane.” “It’s practical.” Marcus pulled his hands from his pockets, placing them flat on the desk. “I need a wife. You need money. This solves both problems.” “You don’t know anything about my problems.” “I know you’re drowning in debt. I know your family is one payment away from losing everything. I know you spent Christmas in a hospital instead of enjoying your holiday.” His eyes locked onto hers. “I know Victor called you six times last week.” Ice flooded her veins. “How do you….” “I pay attention, Miss Vance.” The use of her last name felt like a slap. They’d had sex a week ago. His marks had barely faded from her neck. And now they were back to Miss Vance, like nothing had happened. Like she was still just the assistant. The employee. The thing he kept around for convenience. “Take your time,” Marcus said, settling into his chair with infuriating calm. “Think it over. Run the numbers. You’ll come around.” The certainty in his voice made her want to scream. “I won’t.” “You will.” Elara turned and walked out. She didn’t storm. Didn’t slam the door. Just walked out with her head high and her hands steady, even though everything inside her was screaming. The assistants at their desks kept their eyes down, suddenly fascinated by their computer screens. It was the first time in three years she’d walked out of Marcus Thorne’s office without being dismissed. And surprisingly, he didn’t call her back. No sharp command. No snide comment about professionalism. Nothing. Her own office was smaller. Cramped. A desk shoved against a window that overlooked the building next door instead of the city skyline. But it was hers, and right now she needed the space to breathe. Elara dropped into her chair and pressed her palms against her eyes. One million dollars. The number kept circling her brain like a vulture. That kind of money would pay off Victor. Cover her mother’s treatment. Give Leo a real shot at a future instead of community college classes he could barely afford. That kind of money would save them. But marriage? To Marcus Thorne? The man who’d made her life miserable for three years? The man who’d fucked her in a stairwell and then act like she was nothing? Her phone buzzed. She ignored it. The office phone rang. “Miss Vance speaking.” “Hi, um, there’s someone here to see you?” The receptionist’s voice was hesitant. “He doesn’t have an appointment, but he says it’s urgent. His name is Victor.” Elara’s blood turned to ice. Victor. The debt collector. Here. At her office. “Tell him….” Her voice cracked. She cleared her throat. “Tell him I’ll be right down.” She hung up before the receptionist could respond. Her hands were shaking again, but this time there was no rage to hide behind. Just pure, animal fear. Victor had found her office. He’d tracked her down to the one place she thought was safe. And if he was here, it meant the forty-eight hours were up. It meant she was out of time. And he’s here to collect the money she had no hand in spending, her father, her father the drunk gambler had been borrowing money from Victor. Broken Glass Victor was waiting in the lobby, leaning against the reception desk like he owned the place. Designer suit. Expensive watch. Nothing about him screamed debt collector except the dead look in his eyes when they landed on her. Elara’s stomach twisted. “We need to talk,” he said. “Not here.” She grabbed his arm, steering him toward the exit. The last thing she needed was her colleagues witnessing this. “Outside.” They crossed the marble lobby in silence, through the revolving doors and into the cold January air. The parking lot was mostly empty at this hour, just a few scattered cars and the distant hum of traffic. Elara didn’t stop until they were behind a concrete pillar, away from the building’s glass walls. “What are you doing here?” Her voice came out harsh. “How did you even find my office?” Victor smiled. It didn’t reach his eyes. “Your father gave me your details. Workplace, address, everything. Luca’s been very cooperative lately.” Of course he had. Luca would sell out his own children if it meant saving his skin for another day. “What do you want?” “Your father hasn’t been answering his phone for two weeks. His weekly payment is overdue.” Victor pulled out his phone, scrolling through something before turning the screen toward her. Numbers. Dates. A debt that had somehow grown even larger. “The house goes up for collateral if I don’t get payment by tomorrow.” “Tomorrow?” Elara’s voice cracked. “That’s impossible. I need more time.” “You’ve had ten years, Elara.” “Please.” The word tasted like ash. She hated begging. Hated the way her voice went small and desperate. But this was her mother’s house. The only thing they had left. “Just give me one more week. I’ll figure something out. I’ll get you the money.” “One week won’t change anything.” Victor pocketed his phone. “You don’t have it now, you won’t have it then.” “I’ll find a way.” “How? You going to ask your boss for a raise?” He gestured toward the tower behind them. “Girls like you don’t get miracles. You get buried.” “I’m not asking for a miracle. I’m asking for time.” Victor studied her for a long moment. She could see him calculating, weighing her worth against whatever pressure Luca’s debt had put on him. Finally, he sighed. “Twenty-four hours, Elara. That’s all you get.” He started walking back toward the street. “Clock’s ticking.” Tick. Tok. She watched him go, her legs suddenly unsteady. Twenty-four hours. One day to come up with money she didn’t have. One day before they lost everything. The sound of footsteps made her turn. Marcus was walking through the parking lot, phone pressed to his ear, talking in that clipped tone he used for business calls. He must have been heading to his car. His eyes swept past her, lingering for just a second before moving on. He’d heard. She knew he’d heard. The parking lot wasn’t that big, and Victor’s voice carried. But Marcus kept walking. Didn’t stop. Didn’t acknowledge her. Just continued toward his black Mercedes like she was part of the scenery. Elara stood there, watching him disappear into his car, and felt something cold settle in her chest. Of course he didn’t care. Why would he? She was just the assistant. Just another problem that wasn’t his to solve. She went back inside, grabbed her bag from her office, and left without telling anyone. The building felt too small suddenly. Too suffocating. “Elara!” Emeka caught her at the elevator, slightly out of breath like he’d jogged to catch up. “Where are you going? It’s only 2 PM.” “I need to see my mum.” The lie came easily. Too easily. “She’s not feeling well.” His expression softened immediately. “Oh babe, I’m sorry. Do you need anything?” “No. I just need to go.” “Okay. Text me if you need me, yeah?” She nodded and stepped into the elevator before he could see her face crumble. The subway ride home was a blur. Bodies pressed together. The smell of sweat and cheap cologne. Someone’s music bleeding through their headphones. Elara stared at the floor and tried not to think about Victor’s words. Twenty-four hours. The house. Her mother. One million dollars. The thought of what happened at the office started coming back to her. It’s absurd she’s even thinking about it, it’s Marcus Thorne, why would ever want to marry Marcus Thorne, she thought to herself. No. She wasn’t that desperate. She wasn’t going to sell herself to Marcus Thorne for money. There had to be another way. Her apartment building looked the same as always. The familiar brownstone that had been home for the past five years. She climbed the steps to her floor, keys already in hand. The door was open. Elara stopped. She’d locked it this morning. She always locked it. Her hand pushed the door wider. Inside, her wardrobe was open, clothes thrown across the floor. Drawers pulled out and overturned. Everything scattered. “No. No no no.” She dropped her bag and ran to her bedroom closet. Shoved aside the shoes and boxes stacked at the bottom. Her hands found the metal lockbox she kept hidden in the back corner. It was open. The small lock was broken. Empty. Her heart skipped. Three thousand dollars. Every cent she’d managed to save over the past months. Money meant for her mother’s treatment. Money she’d scraped together from skipped meals and extra shifts and selling anything she didn’t absolutely need. Gone. Only one person had a key to her apartment. Luca. Her father had robbed her.

My fated mate rejected me at 4 AM in my own kitchen. Best thing that ever happened to me. Because here's what that @sshole didn't know when he called me tr@sh: I'm a gold wolf. The rarest, most powerful wolf alive. And my second chance mate? The Alpha King himself. So to everyone who shoved me in hallways, who laughed, who thought I was nothing— Buckle up. You're about to see what happens when your "weak little nerd" becomes your Queen. "Alaric! Brielle! Caelan! Get down here and eat your breakfast right now!" Mom—Elowyn Emberfang, our pack's Luna—her voice boomed up from downstairs. Oh yeah, forgot to mention—we're triplets. Tomorrow's our eighteenth birthday. Which means two things: we'll find our mates, and at exactly 11:59 PM—the moment we were born—we'll shift for the first time. Most wolves shift between sixteen and eighteen, but we're late bloomers. "The ABC Crew! Last call or you're gonna be late!" That's what Dad calls us when we're dragging our feet—Alaric, Brielle, Caelan. A-B-C. Real creative, Dad. I dragged myself out of bed, rubbed my eyes, and while I brushed my teeth, let me give you the rundown on the three of us. Alaric's the oldest—beat me out by four minutes. He got Dad's build—broad shoulders, all muscle, the kind of guy people just move out of the way for. Skin's that warm bronze from Mom's side, eyes this intense amber that can pin you in place. He keeps his locs tied back, always neat. Girls at the academy throw themselves at him, but Alaric shuts it down every time. Future Alpha of the Emberfang Pack can't just give his heart away to anyone. Still my best friend, though. Not that I'd admit it out loud. I'm number two. Got Dad's coloring—copper skin, eyes like autumn leaves. The Moon Goddess told my parents before we were born that my wolf would be... different. But they never told anyone. Fine by me. I learned early how to make myself invisible. Oversized hoodies even in summer, glasses I don't actually need, hair pulled up and stuffed under my hood. Let them say whatever. Being the weird one beats being stared at. And it's not just about hiding my body—it's about what happens when I shift. What my wolf looks like. That's the real secret. Then there's Brielle. My sister—if you wanna call her that—is gorgeous, I'll give her that. Honey-toned skin, deep brown eyes, hair down to her waist that she spends an hour straightening every morning. But she's also the entire reason I learned to keep my head down. Because Brielle's already claimed the future Alpha from the neighboring pack as hers. The Nightveil Pack's school bvrned down last semester, so now they're sharing space with us at the Emberfang Academy. Which means we see him every single day. Thaddeus Nightveil. I try not to think about him. We finally made it downstairs. Alaric was already good to go—dark jeans, a henley that didn't hide the muscle underneath, boots that cost more than most wolves save up for in months. I looked the same as always: oversized hoodie, baggy joggers, my most beat-up sneakers. Brielle, as usual, was dressed like she had a red carpet appearance—that top was so small you had to squint to call it a shirt, the skirt was basically a wide belt, and she had on four-inch heels. Dad was already by the door, keys in one hand, coffee in the other. "Let's move. Alaric already left." "I am NOT riding with her!" Brielle said, looking at me like I was tr@sh on the sidewalk. Dad didn't even glance up. "You're riding with her. You totaled three cars, Brielle. Deal with it for ten minutes." She whipped around to face me, eyes blazing. "Stay away from me at school! Don't talk to me, don't look at me. Don't even breathe in my direction!" I didn't answer. She's been saying the same stuff to me since we could walk. I slid into the driver's seat of the black Challenger—Dad gave it to me after my last growth spurt, and it's the only thing that makes me feel like I have any power at all—the engine rumbled under my palm. Brielle slammed the passenger door and immediately pulled out her phone, pressing herself against the door like she could teleport away from me if she tried hard enough. Long day ahead. But at least it's Friday. Thank Goddess for that. We got to school. Caelan didn't shut up the entire ride. I pulled the black Challenger into the Alpha kids' reserved spot. Next to me was Alaric's black Charger—he was already here. One spot over sat a deep blue Corvette. Caelan started screaming the second she saw it, so I didn't need to guess whose it was. Thaddeus Nightveil. Future Alpha of the Nightveil Pack. I try to avoid him. No special reason—the guy just hates me for no reason at all. He's the worst bully in this entire school. Bar none. His twin sister Wren's birthday is also tomorrow. My dad and his dad figured they'd just combine the parties—mostly because Caelan's convinced he's her fated mate. Even though Thaddeus treats me like garbage, I have to admit... he's hot. About six-three, same height as Alaric. Blue eyes—yeah, this dark-skinned @sshole has blue eyes that could svck you in if you stared too long. His short hair's always styled in perfect waves, and those tight T-shirts he wears show off abs that are way too defined. Wait. Stop. Brielle, what are you doing. I hate him. He hates me. We're even. I barely made it to my locker before the insults started flying. "Hey fatty, nerd, loser, ug1y, four-eyes—" That's just some of it. They only do this when Alaric's not around. Caelan, her crew, and Thaddeus—those three lead the pack. I don't say anything. They always say "snitches get stitches." Honestly, I'm not scared of them. Dad told me I could take down anyone, even an Alpha. When we spar, I can make him tap out. Thaddeus hates me, but his sister Wren is my best friend. Wren's always trying to get me to dress more girly, wants me to ditch these big-@ss glasses. We're wolves—she knows I don't actually need them. She walked over, threw her arm around my shoulder. "Brielle, you just gonna let them tr@sh-talk you like that? You know you could beat the sh!t out of them. Why put up with it?" I didn't answer. Just grabbed my books from my locker and sighed. "Let's get to class." Wren and I have every class together. She didn't push it, just tightened her arm around my shoulder a little. We walked to class together. Behind us, I could hear Caelan laughing. I pretended I didn't. --- Wren and I walked into the cafeteria. "Wren, why are you hanging out with that loser?" "Hey fatty, you should skip lunch." "Wren, come sit with us and leave that waste of space alone." Everyone was pointing at me, laughing. My eyes bvrned, but I wouldn't let the tears fall—no way I'd give them that satisfaction. Suddenly I wasn't hungry anymore. I turned to run and slammed into something, hitting the floor hard. "Watch where you're fvcking going, ug1y!" Thaddeus yelled, kicking me in the side. "I feel sorry for your future mate. He's gonna take one look at your face and reject you. Who'd want a weak, pathetic, fat four-eyes as a mate? I bet you'll die alone. Look at what you're wearing. Who'd want to be seen with someone like you?" He kept going. Finally kicked me in the face and walked off. I knew it was gonna swell up. I stayed on the floor, didn't move. Just wondering how people could be this cruel. Alaric walked in and saw me lying in the hallway crying. He immediately sat down next to me, pulled me into his arms, voice almost a roar. "Who did this? Brielle, who did this?" Viggo and Cade came over too. Both just as pissed—they've always treated me like a little sister. I didn't answer. Just cried against Alaric. "Brielle, you tell me right fvcking now! Who did this?" Dad was at school, in a meeting with the principal. Something about rogues showing up at the edge of the woods near campus. I didn't want him to see me like this. Someone would end up dead. I hate Thaddeus, but I don't want him to die today. Whether it's Dad or Alaric who does it, he's a dead man. My dad's the kind of Alpha you don't mess with. Piss him off and he'll snap your neck. He never jokes around, especially when it comes to his daughters. Yeah, I'm a daddy's girl. You probably figured that out already. Mom texted saying I could come home. Thank Goddess, I need to get out of this he11hole. Maybe she can get me out of tomorrow's party too. Alpha Alton, Luna Amira, Thaddeus, Wren, and his future Beta Cole and Gamma Lane are all staying on our territory to help set up for the party. Fvck. Why couldn't they just throw the party at their own pack? Caelan's POV I was sitting on Thaddeus's lap, tongue down his throat, when I caught Brielle and his sister walking into the cafeteria out of the corner of my eye. I immediately started tr@shing her. That's how you get the popular kids to accept you. Everyone was laughing. I know she's my sister, I should feel guilty, but I don't. She deserves it. Dad thinks she's so special, treats her like a princess. Yeah, she gets straight A's, does everything Dad tells her to. I know I've screwed up a lot, but fvck, I'm his daughter too. Brielle and Alaric both got new cars for their birthdays, and I'm stuck riding with that b!tch just because I totaled my last three cars. We have money. Dad could easily buy me another one, but he won't. Says I can work a few hours at his company every day like Alaric and Brielle do, save up and buy my own. Fvck that. Why should I have to do that? I'm gonna be Luna of the Nightveil Pack someday. They've got just as much money as we do. We'd just finished humiliating her when she ran out of the cafeteria. She won't tell anyone. I told her if she does, I'll make her life he11. I'll make her pathetic existence even worse than it already is. I can't wait to shift tonight. Legend says one of us three is a gold wolf, with special abilities from the Moon Goddess. I know it's gonna be me. That way my mate and I will be the strongest pair. We'll be a power couple. Brielle's weak and pathetic, so it definitely won't be her. Alaric's too soft, always running after Brielle to check if she's okay. Though maybe that compassion is what'll make him a good Alpha. He's a good brother. But I'm kinda jealous of how close he and Mom and Dad are with Brielle. Just wait. Wait till they find out I'm the gold wolf at the party. --- Luna Elowyn's POV I can't believe the triplets turn eighteen tomorrow. I remember when my mate and his father—he was still Alpha back then—came to my old pack, Ravencrest, to sign a treaty. I was nineteen, daughter of the Beta. Corvin Emberfang was twenty-one. The second our eyes met, we knew we were fated mates. I remember thinking, this gorgeous brown-skinned man is mine. That night after everyone went to sleep, he snuck into my room. We went at it all night. Then the next morning, he rejected me. Said a Beta's daughter wasn't good enough to be his future Luna. "I, Corvin Emberfang, future Alpha of the Emberfang Pack, reject you, Elowyn Ravencrest, as my fated mate and future Luna." I accepted his rejection. What neither of us knew at the time—he wasn't just leaving me. He was leaving three little surprises behind. I was halfway through my pregnancy with the triplets when the Emberfang Pack held a ceremony celebrating Corvin becoming the new Alpha. Beta families had to attend. My parents knew my situation, but I begged them to let me handle it myself, or I'd run away. They were always supportive. I was packing my stuff in the guest room at the Emberfang Pack when Corvin burst in and grabbed my arm, hard enough to scare me. "You let another man touch what's mine?" I yanked my arm away. "I don't belong to you. You gave up that right." His voice got deeper, his eyes darker. I knew his wolf had taken over. "Whose kids are those, Elowyn?" I wasn't scared of him. I was just as pissed as he was. I met his gaze head-on. "The only man I've ever s1ept with—if I'm still willing to call you that—is you. You're the sperm donor for my three kids. You don't get to go near them. You rejected me, which means you rejected them." That day, he completely broke. A single tear slid down his face. Then he jumped out the window, shifted mid-air into that beautiful black wolf of his, and took off into the woods. Thinking back on all this now, I'm busy getting ready to welcome my old pack for the party. I definitely didn't make it easy for him to win me back. I finally forgave him before the kids were born, and we got married. Not necessary for us wolves, but he wanted the pack to know I was his fated mate, and humans to know I was his wife. Eighteen years ago, I officially became Luna of the Emberfang Pack. I love that Alpha to death! Brielle's POV Party day. Four in the morning, wide awake. Eighteen. Can't believe it. Even though I won't shift till 11:59 tonight, I'll be able to sense my fated mate before then. Maybe it'll be someone from Mom's old pack, someone who can get me out of here. I've already got enough credits to graduate early. I'll miss Mom, Dad, Alaric, and Wren, but the rest of those @ssholes? Not one bit. Can't sleep anyway, might as well go downstairs and grab something to eat. Suddenly craving Oreos dunked in milk. Threw on my oversized hoodie and matching baggy pants, ran downstairs. The second my feet hit the first-floor landing, a scent hit me. Best thing I've ever smelled in my life. Musk mixed with my favorite cologne. I know this scent—Alaric wears it too, but this definitely isn't him. I stood there, pinned in place by that scent. Who? I think I'm already in love with him. Then a hand slapped across my face, snapping me out of it. Then fingers wrapped around my throat. Sparks. Those sparks I've been dreaming about, bvrning from his fingertips into my skin. Then I heard the words. Don't know why, but I always knew these words would come someday. "It's you! You're fvcking tr@sh to me. How could the Moon Goddess make this kind of mistake, pairing me with a disgrace like you. You're weak! Ug1y! Fat! No class at all! Just a nerd!" "I'd rather die than be seen with a pathetic b!tch like you! I, Thaddeus Nightveil, future Alpha of the Nightveil Pack, reject you, Brielle Emberfang, as my fated mate and future Luna." Fine. Fated mates are supposed to be loyal, kind. What about those love-at-first-sight stories? I remember Mom telling us the story of how Dad rejected her then won her back. She forgave him, and he's treated her like a queen ever since. But I won't forgive this @sshole. And I won't chase him back—though a heartless piece of sh!t like him probably won't come begging anyway. He already fvcked Caelan, I don't want him. Disgusting. Strange thing is, the rejection didn't hurt like they say it does. Didn't hurt at all. Just pure rage. I yanked his hand off my throat and looked him straight in the eye. "You think I want you? The guy who screwed my b!tch of a sister? The guy who's treated me like sh!t from day one? I, Brielle Emberfang, accept your rejection!" That shocked look on his face. Beautiful. I turned and went back upstairs. Completely forgot about getting snacks. --- Alpha Corvin's POV Sitting in the conference room, still doesn't feel real. My three kids turn eighteen today. Eighteen years ago, I almost lost my beautiful Elowyn. The moment she accepted me again as her fated mate, I became the happiest man alive. Those sparks when we touch still send shivers down my spine. Just thinking about it is making a certain part of me react. Should I go back and get in bed with my sєxy Luna again? Someone's walking toward the office. Getting closer, I recognize Brielle's scent. My girl. I can feel her emotions too. Before she even knocked, I told her to come in. "What's up, princess?" She sighed. "Dad, that offer you made—about me going to the Alpha King's territory to train his female warriors. I accept. They all know I'm the strongest she-wolf alive anyway." "What made you change your mind?" She gave a small smile. "Don't get mad. Thaddeus rejected me. I just don't want to see him at school anymore." I was pissed, but I didn't let her see it. I told her they'd be thrilled she changed her mind. I'd arrange for her to get her diploma early, she could leave Monday morning. I told her to go get ready for tonight's party. She doesn't know the real reason I want her to go. But she'll find out soon enough. That punk rejected her? I'm actually glad. It's all part of the Moon Goddess's plan. Oh yeah, I left a surprise in her room. Tonight my daughter's gonna make everyone's jaws drop and eyes pop out. Her beauty's gonna shine like moonstone tonight.
