Chapter One I managed to get away from the party and climb the staircase to the room I shared with my fiancé, Lucas. It was our engagement party, and after the official gathering with Lucas's parents at their company, we decided to head back to his townhouse and party with just our friends. His friends, actually. His friends were snobs who didn't like associating with people from the lower class. Lucas was super rich, and that meant all his friends were rich too. I, on the other hand, was from a poor family and worked in Lucas's family's company as a junior staff member. That was how we met and fell in love. Many people were against our relationship, especially his parents, but he defied them and engaged me. So now they just had to ignore me because there was nothing else they could do. I stumbled my way to the hallway where the rooms were. I opened the knob on my right and let myself into the room. The room was already filled with light. I took off my shoes and clothes and climbed into the bed, my eyelids heavy and my body swaying slightly from the haze. I had drunk just two glasses, but I was very drunk. I just wanted to sleep till the next day. I was just about to doze off when I felt a manly hand wrap around my waist, followed by a deep sigh. I smiled to myself, my lips curving lazily in the dim glow. Lucas. The man moved closer to me, and I could feel him press his body against mine, his warmth enveloping me like a blanket. I could feel his hard-on press against my back. I arched my hips instinctively, a soft hum escaping my throat, so that it could nestle between my butt crack. His hands crept up slowly, fingers tracing my skin, and cupped my breasts, his grip firm yet teasing. "Hmmmm," I moaned sleepily, my voice muffled against the pillow, my eyes fluttering shut in contentment. He took that as encouragement, his breath quickening against my ear, as he squeezed my breasts and pinched my nipples, sending sparks through my body. I was now moaning loudly from his touch, my back arching slightly, and I adjusted my position so that his cock, which was already rock hard, was against the entrance of my pussy. He leaned down, his stubble grazing my skin, and latched onto the side of my neck, biting and kissing with a hungry intensity that made me gasp. I knew that I would have a hickey on my neck, the mark blooming red under his lips, but I didn't care. I felt so horny that it didn't matter to me that people were having a party downstairs, their laughter faintly echoing up the stairs. I took one of his big veiny hands, feeling the rough texture of his palm, and guided it to my pussy, which was already wet from what we were doing. His fingers slipped down from my clit to my folds, coating them with my juices, and he brought them to my nipple. He pinched the nipple so hard that I jerked against him, a sharp cry leaving my lips, and then moaned when the pain subsided into a throbbing pleasure. He repeated the action again, except this time he brought his fingers to my mouth. Without even thinking about it, I closed my lips around his fingers and sucked on them like my life depended on it, my tongue swirling greedily. My actions surprised me—I had never considered myself a sex freak to do something like that. I had always stuck with the traditional vanilla sex. Maybe it was the alcohol, but whatever it was, I loved it, my cheeks flushing with a mix of embarrassment and excitement. He returned his finger to my clit and rubbed gently against it, his touch light but insistent, building the pressure inside me. He kept on rubbing my clit until my orgasm tore into me, and I screamed, my body convulsing, fists clenching the sheets as waves of ecstasy rolled through me. I was still coming down from my high, my chest heaving with ragged breaths, my skin tingling, when I felt him lift my legs, his strong hands gripping my thighs firmly. The next thing I felt was his erection against my pussy. When I felt the head against my opening, I froze, my brows furrowing in confusion. He was definitely bigger than he usually was. Was it the alcohol? Did alcohol make men bigger? Before I could find an answer, he started pushing into my pussy, and I forgot everything that was on my mind, my thoughts scattering like leaves in the wind. Fuck, he felt divine. I could feel his cock stretching my pussy walls, my inner muscles clenching around him involuntarily. He was definitely bigger. And thicker. I could feel the veins on his cock pulsing against me. I could feel his tip rubbing along my cervix in an oddly pleasurable, yet somewhat uncomfortable caress. My cunt continued to expand and swallow his cock, my hips shifting restlessly to accommodate him. He kept on pushing until he was buried to the hilt. I had never felt so full. It was like I could feel him everywhere, my toes curling and my fingers digging into the mattress. I felt like he’d already hit the end of me. He came to a halt. He was completely still inside of me now, waiting for me to adjust, and to let the tight grip of my cunt relax. His breath was harsh in my ear, hot and uneven, and I could tell he was holding himself in check, his body tense against mine. I pushed myself closer to him as a sign of encouragement, my ass grinding back against his hips with a needy wiggle. Luckily, he understood it and started moving his hips, his hands tightening on my waist. At first, he started with a slow and deep movement, each thrust deliberate, making me whimper softly. Then it got harder—he would withdraw almost entirely, leaving me empty and aching, and then slam back into my pussy with force, his hips snapping forward. Then, he started thrusting faster into me. I could feel an orgasm building swiftly, my face contorting in pleasure, mouth open in silent gasps. “It feels so good. Don't stop,” I said, reaching down between my legs and touching myself, my fingers circling my clit frantically. He increased the tempo and started pounding into me roughly, his grunts mixing with the slap of skin on skin. "You like that, don't you?" he groaned into my ear, his voice low and gravelly. My body froze for a second, a shiver running down my spine. Even with the blurry state of my mind, I knew that wasn't Lucas's voice. Was my mind playing tricks with me? My eyes widened slightly in the darkness, but the fog of arousal clouded my thoughts. Before I could ponder on it, I felt him bite on the sensitive spot on my neck, his teeth grazing just right, and that made me explode. My head tossed back as I moaned out my release, my neck exposed, body shuddering violently. I could feel tremors in my pussy, and my legs were shaking uncontrollably, quivering in his grasp, that he had to hold my legs still to continue pounding hard into me. I felt my back arch on its own, as my body pushed itself down on him, trying to take him completely inside, my muscles straining with effort. “Don’t stop. Make me cum again for your cock,” I pleaded, the pleasure I felt making me delirious to my actions, my voice breathy and desperate. I had never been this wild in the bed before. He heeded my pleas and went faster, his pace relentless, so that I kept cumming without stop, one orgasm blending into the next, my cries echoing in the room. He nipped my ear with his sharp teeth before growling, “I’m going to cum so hard and so far inside of your sweet tight little pussy." All of a sudden, he let out a howl and began to unload spurt after spurt of hot sticky cum deep in my pussy, his body jerking with each release, his fingers digging into my hips. My pussy milked every last drop from him until his balls were empty, my walls contracting rhythmically around him. I felt him kiss my neck softly, his lips lingering tenderly—something he had never done in the past. He had always left to clean up himself the moment he was done. Something about the kiss was so soothing, warm and gentle against my flushed skin, that I dozed off immediately, my body relaxing completely. Chapter Two The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the headache. It felt like someone had taken a hammer to my skull. I groaned, pressing my palms against my temples, and swore to myself I’d never touch alcohol again in my life. The next thing I noticed was the soreness between my legs, my pussy felt like it had been scraped raw, a dull ache pulsing with every slight movement. Confusion hit me like a wave. I peeled my eyes open, wincing at the light filtering through the curtains, and my heart lurched. This wasn’t my room. Where the hell was I? I sat up slowly, clutching the sheets to my chest, and thankfully, the pounding in my head started to ease. I blinked, taking in my surroundings, and a flicker of recognition sparked. I knew this room. It was the guest room opposite the one I shared with Lucas. It was the room I used to stay in when I first started visiting him, back when we were just dating, before we got engaged. But what was I doing here? I was still lost in my thoughts, my brow furrowed as I tried to piece together the night, when I noticed movement on the bed beside me. My head snapped to the side, and I saw a man lying there, his chest rising and falling in a deep, steady rhythm. At first, my foggy brain thought it was Lucas but as my eyes adjusted to the dim light, I looked closer. Horror clawed at my chest, my breath catching in my throat. This wasn’t Lucas. I scrambled out of the bed, dragging the sheets with me to cover my naked body. My legs trembled as I stumbled backward, my eyes locked on the stranger. Thankfully, he didn’t stir, his face relaxed in deep sleep, one arm flung carelessly over the pillow. Who was this man? What was he doing in this bed? Why was I in this bed? Why was I sore... My eyes widened as realization crashed over me like a bucket of ice water. No… no… no. Oh my God, what have I done? This couldn’t be happening to me. Panic surged, my hands shaking as I clutched the sheets tighter. Lucas would be furious if he walked in and saw me like this, tangled in bed with a stranger. I had to leave. Now. I rushed to the floor, my movements frantic as I gathered my clothes. My dress was crumpled in a heap and my shoes were scattered. I dressed as quickly as my trembling fingers allowed, my breath hitching with every sound from the house, terrified someone might catch me. When I was done, I crept to the door, my bare feet silent against the hardwood. I peeked into the hallway, my pulse racing, and when I saw it was empty, I bolted, running toward the front door like my life depended on it. Once outside, the cool morning air hit my face, snapping me further awake. I hailed a cab, my voice shaky as I gave the driver my apartment address. I realized too late I didn’t have my purse. Desperate, I begged the security guard at Lucas’s townhouse to lend me some cash to pay the fare. He gave me a curious look but handed over a few bills, and I thanked him profusely before the cab sped off. When I finally reached the safety of my apartment, I collapsed against the door, sliding to the floor as sobs tore through me. My chest heaved, tears streaming down my face, smudging last night’s makeup. I didn’t even remember what happened, but I knew with sickening certainty that I had slept with that stranger. The soreness, the unfamiliar fullness I could still feel...it was undeniable. How would I tell Lucas I had slept with someone else? He would be livid. He wouldn’t care that I was drunk, that I could barely piece together the night. God, I might lose him. The thought made my sobs come harder, my hands clutching my knees as I rocked back and forth on the cold floor. I don’t know how long I stayed there, curled up and crying, but the shrill ring of my house phone cut through the haze. My heart jumped, fear spiking that somehow everyone already knew what I’d done. I shook my head at the ridiculous thought and pushed myself up, my legs wobbly as I shuffled to the phone. “Hello?” I said, picking it up. It was a miracle my voice came out steady despite the storm raging inside me. “Camille? Oh, thank God. I was worried about you. Where are you?” Lucas’s voice was laced with concern, and my stomach twisted with guilt. “I’m at my apartment,” I said, my fingers tightening around the receiver. “Is everything alright?” “Of course it is. Why wouldn’t it be?” I forced a lightness into my tone. “I don’t know. It’s just weird that you rushed off to your house so early. Your bag’s still here.” “Yeah, I forgot it,” I mumbled, my mind racing for an excuse."I was so desperate to get off the party dress that I forgot my purse." “Your clothes are in the house." He pointed out. "Are you okay?” “Yes, I am. I… I forgot I had practically moved in,” I lied, biting my lip. “Is it that time of the month?” “Yes,” I seized the excuse, relief flooding me. “It came so early, and I had to leave. I’m sorry, babe.” “No need. I understand.” His voice softened, and I could picture him running a hand through his dark hair, his brow creasing slightly. “You do remember we’re having dinner with my parents this evening, right?” Shit. I had completely forgotten. My stomach sank. I wasn’t looking forward to it then, and I definitely wasn’t now. The last thing I needed was to face his parents, who had never hidden their disapproval of me. “Yeah, I remember,” I said, my voice flat. “I’ll be at the house by six.” “Okay. Take care. And please wear something…” “Classy. I know,” I finished for him, my lips pressing into a thin line. “Why don’t you wear something from our last shopping trip? Mom would really warm up to you if she sees you putting in an effort to fit into our world.” “Of course, babe. Erm, I need to go. I have a lot of things to do today.” I needed to end this call before I broke down again. “Cool. I’ll talk to you later.” “Yeah. Love yo...” The line went dead before I could finish. I stared at the phone, my heart sinking further, before gently placing it back on the receiver. At least Lucas didn’t know what happened last night. I still had time to figure out what to do. By 5:30, I was back at Lucas’s house, dressed in a sleek navy dress from our last shopping trip, my hair pulled into an elegant updo to mask how frazzled I felt. We headed to his parents’ estate together,. Throughout the short journey, my fingers twisted nervously in my lap. Lucas’s parents lived in a private estate, their sprawling mansion a testament to their status as one of Chicago’s richest families. Their company, Vaughmont Breweries, founded by Lucas’s great-grandfather and his friend, had flourished over generations, its name synonymous with wealth and power. As we pulled up to the iron gates, my nerves tightened like a coiled spring. It felt like everyone already knew what I’d done, like this dinner was a trap to humiliate me. “Hey,” Lucas said, his hand closing over mine as I lingered at the foot of the front steps. His touch was warm but it only deepened my guilt. “What’s wrong? You’ve been acting strange since we started driving. Are you okay?” His green eyes searched mine, concern etched into his handsome face. “Yes, I am,” I lied, forcing a small smile, my lips trembling slightly. “Are you sure? You know how my parents are. I want you to be at your best at this dinner. I was hoping they’d warm up to you.” “I understand. Don’t worry about me. I’m fine,” I said, squeezing his hand back, though my stomach churned. “Okay. Let’s go.” Together, we walked into the house. The housekeeper, a stern woman with gray streaks in her hair, informed us that his parents were already in the dining room, and we made our way there, my heart pounding with every step. “You’re late,” Mrs. Cecil Vaughan said the moment we stepped into the dining room, her voice sharp as she adjusted her pearl necklace, her eyes narrowing at me. “I’m sorry. We got caught up in traffic,” Lucas said smoothly, walking over to his mother. He leaned down and kissed her cheek, his charm effortless. Then he turned to his father. “Hello, Father.” Mr. Everett Vaughan merely nodded, his face impassive as he continued cutting into his steak. Lucas took his seat beside his mother, and I followed, settling opposite him, my hands clasped tightly in my lap. “Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan,” I said, my voice steady despite the cold reception. As expected, they didn’t respond, didn’t even glance my way words. The dinner went on, the conversation flowing solely between Lucas and his parents. They discussed work, the latest Vaughmont deals, and random society gossip. Lucas didn’t try to include me, and I didn’t bother inserting myself, my fork pushing food around my plate as I kept my eyes down. When the second course was about to be served, I heard the faint chime of the doorbell. My head tilted slightly, curious. “Oh, finally. He’s here,” Mrs. Cecil said, her face lighting up with a rare, genuine smile, her eyes sparkling with excitement. It was the happiest I’d ever seen her about someone’s presence. Was someone joining us for dinner? I turned to Lucas, my brow furrowing. “Is someone else joining us for dinner?” I asked, keeping my voice low. “Oh, didn’t I tell you?” he said, his tone casual as he wiped his mouth with a napkin. “My best friend is here in Chicago.” “Your best friend?” I blinked, caught off guard. Lucas had never mentioned a best friend before. “Yes. He flew in yesterday to attend the engagement party, but his plane arrived late. He was at the house last night for the party, but he didn’t really mingle much. You must have seen him.” Seen him? I didn’t even know he had a best friend, let alone that he was in Chicago. A pang of hurt twisted in my chest that Lucas hadn’t shared something so important, but I pushed it down. I was about to respond when I heard footsteps behind me from the entrance. Lucas stood from his chair, a wide grin spreading across his face as he walked toward the newcomer. “Hey, man!” he called, his voice warm. Mrs. Cecil’s smile widened, her hands clasping together. “Damien, it’s so nice to finally see you. I almost thought you wouldn’t be able to tear yourself away from work.” “And miss seeing Lucas one last time before he’s off the market? Not a chance,” a deep voice replied. “Speaking of,” Lucas said, turning back to me, “Camille, I want you to meet my best friend.” Still stinging from the fact that Lucas hadn’t told me about his best friend, I mustered the best fake smile I could, smoothing my dress as I stood from the chair. I turned and moved toward Lucas, but before I could reach him, my eyes met the eyes of his best friend. I froze mid-step, my breath catching in my throat, my heart stopping as if someone had yanked the plug from my chest. My eyes refused to believe what they were seeing. It was the man from last night. The man I had slept with. Chapter Three I stared at Camille, my jaw tight, masking the storm of emotions churning inside me. She looked scared-terrified, even- her wide eyes darting nervously, her face pale as if she’d seen a ghost. I could only imagine what was racing through her mind. I was shocked too, seeing her standing there, but I buried it deep, my expression cool and controlled, betraying nothing. Beneath the shock, anger simmered. Did she know who I was when she threw herself at me last night? I couldn’t believe the woman I’d slept with was my best friend’s fiancée. “Camille,” Lucas said, his voice snapping her back to reality, his brow furrowing slightly as he noticed her frozen stance. She blinked, realization dawning that she’d been staring at me strangely in front of Lucas and his parents. Her lips parted, and she forced a shaky smile, her fingers twitching at her sides. “Are you okay? Your face is as white as a sheet,” Lucas asked, concern lacing his tone, his hand reaching for hers. If only he knew why she looked like she was about to bolt. “I’m fine,” she said quickly, her voice a touch too high, her eyes flicking to me before darting away. Lucas’s gaze shifted between us, his eyes narrowing slightly, suspicion creeping into his expression. “Do you two know each other?” he asked, his tone careful, searching. Camille opened her mouth, but I cut in before she could speak. “No, we don’t.” She looked shocked at my response, her eyes widening briefly, her lips parting as if she couldn’t believe I’d lied. Did she think I’d announce to Lucas, over his parents’ dining table, that his fiancée was the woman I’d fucked last night? That she’d moaned and writhed under me while a party raged downstairs? “It’s nice to finally meet you,” she said after a beat, her voice steadying, though her hands trembled slightly as she smoothed her dress. “Lucas has said a lot about you.” I nodded, playing along, my lips curving into a polite smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “I hope it’s the good stuff.” Lucas seemed to relax, his shoulders loosening as he pulled Camille closer, wrapping an arm around her waist. My eyes flicked to his hand, possessive and deliberate, a clear message: she’s mine. I forced my gaze away. “Camille, this is my best friend, Damien Montgomery,” Lucas said, his voice warm with pride. “Damien, this is my fiancée, Camille Hunt.” I extended my hand. “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance,” I said, my tone neutral, though my eyes locked onto hers, daring her to keep up the charade. She eyed my hand warily, her fingers hesitating before brushing against mine in the briefest handshake, her skin cold and clammy. She jerked her hand back quickly, as if burned, her cheeks flushing. If she didn’t want Lucas to suspect anything, she needed to get her act together. Her nervousness was practically screaming guilt. “Why don’t we all sit and finish dinner?” Cecil said, her voice cutting through the tension, as she gestured to the table. We took our seats and resumed the dinner. Camille kept stealing glances at me, her eyes darting nervously every time I moved, as if she expected me to drop the bombshell at any moment. I could practically hear her heart pounding, her fear palpable. She sat rigid, her fork trembling slightly as she pushed food around her plate. Strangely, I was attuned to her every movement, too. Without looking directly at her, I noticed the way her fingers gripped her glass too tightly, the way her breath hitched when our eyes accidentally met. It disturbed me, this hyper-awareness of her. I didn’t want anything to do with her....not after last night. Besides the fact that she was my best friend’s fiancée, she was clearly a gold digger, clawing her way into Lucas’s world. I didn’t mess with women like that. Thankfully, Cecil spoke up, pulling my attention away from Camille’s anxious fidgeting. “So, Damien, how has work been? You’ve barely made time to visit us since you moved to London,” she said, her tone warm, her perfectly manicured fingers resting on her wine glass. I leaned back in my chair, forcing a casual smile. “Just been busy. The business requires my presence a lot.” Cecil nodded, her lips pursed in understanding. “I get it. Business before pleasure.” “Exactly,” I said, my gaze sliding to Camille for a moment before returning to Cecil. “Though it’s nice to see Lucas finally settling down. Never thought I’d see the day.” I turned to Camille, my voice taking on a teasing edge. “I’m curious about the woman who managed to get Lucas to agree to walk down the aisle. How did you two meet?” Camille was poking at her food, her fork scraping softly against the plate, but she didn’t respond immediately. She didn’t even seem to hear me, her eyes distant, lost in thought. Lucas tapped her gently on the arm, his brow creasing. “Camille?” he prompted. She jolted, her head snapping up, her eyes meeting everyone’s at the table. Mrs. Cecil’s face twisted with irritation, her lips thinning- she clearly didn’t approve of Camille. That made two of us. “Yes?” Camille said, her voice small, her cheeks flushing under the scrutiny. “Damien asked you a question,” Lucas said, his tone patient but firm. “Oh. Sorry, I got lost for a moment,” she mumbled, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear nervously. I gave her a chilling smile, my eyes narrowing slightly. “It’s alright. I asked how you two met. It’s just surprising that Lucas would want to settle down after knowing you for, what, like two months?” “Three months,” she corrected quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. “We’ve known each other for three months. We met in the lobby of the company. I was working as a receptionist…” That caught my attention. I raised an eyebrow, leaning forward slightly. “You’re a receptionist? Really?” I glanced at Lucas, my tone laced with disbelief. “A receptionist? Really?” Lucas had never been one to dally with the help, let alone fall for one. Camille’s eyes flashed with offense, her chin lifting slightly. “Yes. Is there a problem?” she asked, her voice sharper now, though her hands still trembled in her lap. “No, I’m just intrigued,” I said, my smile tight. “Lucas never seemed like the type to go after junior staff.” “Our status didn’t matter to us,” she said, her voice gaining strength as she glanced at Lucas, her eyes softening. “It was love at first sight.” Lucas smiled at her, his hand squeezing her shoulder, but I couldn’t shake the unease curling in my gut. Love at first sight? Or a calculated move to climb the social ladder? I leaned back, watching her closely, the memory of last night burning in my mind. Whatever game she was playing, I wasn’t about to let her drag Lucas or me down with her. Chapter Four “Hmm,” I responded absentmindedly, swirling the brandy in my glass, my mind still reeling from the dinner. “I’m so elated for you.” The words tasted bitter, forced. “I really wish I could make it to the wedding, but I can’t. I’ll be extremely busy then.” After what happened last night, there was no way in hell I was showing up to their wedding. I didn’t trust Camille one bit. Who knew what she’d try to pull in a room full of people? Lucas tilted his head, his brow creasing slightly. “You don’t even know when the wedding will take place.” I winced inwardly, cursing my slip-up. Now it sounded like I was dodging the event for no reason. “I know it’ll be soon, considering how fast you’re moving,” I said smoothly, recovering. “And right now, I’ve got an important deal I’m closing in Seoul. I won’t be around much, which is why I canceled everything to be here. Once the deal’s done, I’ll definitely visit you two lovebirds. Who knows, maybe by then I’ll have a little godson or goddaughter on the way.” I flashed a teasing grin, hoping to steer the conversation away from my blunder. Cecil interjected. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We still have plenty of time for that.” I nodded, raising my wine glass. “Of course. Let’s cheer to the new couple.” My voice was steady, but my eyes flicked to Camille, who hesitated, her fingers tightening around her glass before she reluctantly lifted it. “Cheers,” Lucas said, clinking his glass against mine, his smile wide. The rest followed, though Camille’s movements were stiff, her lips barely touching the rim of her glass. When dinner finally ended, Cecil wasn’t done with her questions. “How long will you be staying in Chicago, Damien?” “I’m leaving tonight,” I said, keeping my tone casual. “I’ve got a meeting tomorrow. My things are already on the private jet.” Lucas looked surprised, his eyebrows shooting up. “So soon?” From the corner of my eye, I caught the relief flooding Camille’s face, her shoulders sagging slightly, her lips parting in a quiet exhale. She thought she was off the hook. Not quite. “Yeah,” I said, glancing at Lucas. “I would’ve loved to stay longer, but work won’t let me.” Lucas clapped a hand on my shoulder, his grin returning. “Well, since you’re leaving so early, you’re spending the rest of the night with me. You owe me a drinking session. We’ve got a lot of catching up to do.” Cecil stood, smoothing her dress. “You two go ahead. Everett and I are tired and need to sleep.” With that, she and Lucas’s father swept out of the room, leaving just me, Lucas, and Camille. I glanced at Camille, who sat there looking like a startled dove, her eyes wide and her hands clasped tightly in her lap. I knew better now than to buy her innocent act. “What about her?” I asked, nodding toward her, my tone neutral but pointed. Camille’s head snapped up, her voice rushed. “Oh, I’m fine. I can stay here and wait.” I didn’t want to spend another second around her, but leaving her alone felt like giving her a chance to spin some story. “You can come with us,” I said, my voice flat, daring her to refuse. “No need,” she said quickly, her fingers twisting the edge of her napkin. “I wouldn’t want to intrude.” “Okay,” I said, shrugging, letting it go. Let her stew in her guilt. Lucas turned to her, his tone gentle. “You can ask the housekeeper if you need anything.” We left the dining room and headed to the liquor room, the air between us lighter without Camille’s nervous energy. I sank into one of the plush leather sofas, the scent of aged wood and whiskey filling the space. Lucas went to the bar, pouring us each a glass of brandy, the amber liquid catching the light. “Here you go,” he said, handing me a glass before settling into the sofa across from me. “Thanks, man.” I took a sip, savoring the burn, then set the glass on the table. After last night with Camille, I wasn’t touching alcohol around her again. Not a chance. Lucas raised an eyebrow, leaning back with a smirk. “Really? You used to be a party animal. What happened?” I chuckled, though it felt hollow. “I grew up. Plus, I’m still nursing a bit of a hangover from the jetlag and the alcohol I had yesterday.” The lie came easily, but my mind flashed to last night—Camille’s moans, her body arching under me. I shoved the thought away. “You totally missed out on all the fun last night,” Lucas said, shaking his head. “What were you even doing after you left the party?” Screwing your fiancée senseless? The thought popped into my head and I crushed it immediately, my jaw tightening. “Sleeping, actually,” I said, keeping my voice even. “I went to one of your guest rooms and dozed off. Left this morning.” “You could’ve stayed so we could spend more time together,” Lucas said, his tone almost wistful. “We barely see each other anymore.” “We’ve been busy running companies,” I said, steering the conversation toward safer ground. “And one of us now has all his time dedicated to a woman.” I raised an eyebrow, keeping my tone light but probing. Lucas just smiled, taking a sip from his glass, his eyes softening. I pushed further, careful to sound uninterested. “I never thought I’d see the day a woman would tame you.” He scoffed, leaning forward, his elbows on his knees. “As if any woman could ever tame me.” Relief flickered through me. He wasn’t head over heels for her. That was good. It meant I wouldn’t completely shatter him when I eventually told him about last night. "What do you think about her?” he asked suddenly, catching me off guard as he poured himself another drink, his eyes on the glass. I froze for a split second, my eyes narrowing before I caught myself. Why was he asking me that? I shrugged, playing it cool. “She’s okay.” Lucas gave me a long look, his head tilting as if waiting for more. “I mean, she’s beautiful,” I said, careful not to let my thoughts slip to how she’d felt under me, how she’d moaned. “Seems smart. A bit clumsy.” He rolled his eyes, a fond smile tugging at his lips. “Yeah, I know all that. But I meant your personal opinion about her.” This was my chance to plant a seed, to hint at the truth without blowing everything up. “I don’t know,” I said slowly, swirling my glass. “I think you should slow down on things.” He didn’t look surprised, just curious. “Why?” I wanted to tell him- God, I wanted to lay it all out. But the guilt gnawed at me. Telling him would strain our friendship, maybe break it. Lucas would think I’d slept with Camille on purpose, maybe to get back at him for something in the past. I hadn’t even known who she was when it happened- it hadn’t even crossed my mind until I saw her tonight. But I knew how Lucas’s mind worked. He’d have doubts, and I wasn’t about to lose my best friend over some gold-digging receptionist. So I went for a safer answer. “Because it’s obvious she’s a gold digger who’s just around you for your money,” I said, my tone blunt but measured. His brows shot up. “Are you saying a woman can’t love me unless I’m rich?” “I’m not saying that,” I countered, leaning forward. “I just mean she’s using you as a social ladder. Maybe take things a bit slower, get to know more about her.” “Your concern’s nice, but my mind’s made up,” he said, his voice firm, though his smile was easy. “She’s exactly what I want in a woman.” I raised an eyebrow, unable to resist. “I thought you preferred socialites, models, actresses. Didn’t know you were into petty staff from your own company.” Camille was pretty, sure, but she wasn’t his type. That innocent-girl vibe had always annoyed him before. What had changed? “I’m done with those types of women,” he said, leaning back, his expression resolute. “I want someone I can settle down with, have a family with. Camille wants that too. Plus, I can trust her to be more faithful than all the high-end ladies in Chicago.” The irony hit me like a punch, and I nearly laughed, but I caught myself, my lips twitching into a tight smile. If only he knew. “Yeah, you’re right,” I said, forcing the words out. “I’m happy for your choice.” I let it go. This wasn’t my mess to clean up. If Camille kept her mouth shut, so would I. For now, I’d watch her, wait for her to slip up. Because women like her always did. Chapter Five "I can't believe Josh literally did that." I practically choked the words out, my voice muffled with laughter as I leaned forward in my chair. I was with my coworker and friend, Doris, and she was spilling all the details about her disastrous date with another worker in the company. I had been on edge since Damien left Chicago three weeks ago, my heart constantly racing, my stomach twisting into knots every time my phone buzzed or Lucas walked into a room. He had jetted off the day after that awful dinner, and surprisingly, he hadn’t breathed a word to Lucas about that night. I’d been terrified, waiting for the shoe to drop, for Damien to suddenly call or show up and shatter everything. But he hadn’t. It seemed like he was willing to keep his mouth shut, burying the secret as deep as I was trying to. I hadn’t mustered the courage to tell Lucas myself. I loved him too much; the thought of losing him made my chest ache with a hollow pain. But the guilt was a relentless monster, gnawing at me from the inside, leaving me sad and withdrawn for weeks. Doris’s company was a lifeline today, her gossip pulling me out of my head, making me laugh for the first time in what felt like forever. Maybe everything would be fine after all. Maybe I could move past it, pretend it never happened. “Yeah,” Doris said, rolling her eyes dramatically, her lips pursing in annoyance. “I’m definitely not going out with him again. I literally felt so irked the whole time.” “Well, I don’t really like him much anyway,” I replied, shaking my head with a small grimace,. “He has this very weird vibe about him.” “Well, lucky you,” she teased, her eyes sparkling with envy as she leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms. “You’re out of the dating pool, and very soon you’ll be married. How long again?” I sighed dreamily, a genuine smile tugging at my lips despite the weight in my heart, my hand instinctively touching the engagement ring on my finger. “Two weeks’ time. I literally can’t wait—this has been my dream for so long.” Doris opened her mouth to respond, her eyebrows shooting up playfully, but her gaze shifted to something behind me, her expression turning mischievous. “Speaking of the devil, here comes your prince charming.” I turned with a warm smile blooming on my face, expecting to see Lucas’s usual charming grin as he approached. But my heart plummeted when I saw him stomping toward me, his face a mask of fury, jaw clenched so tight the muscles bulged, brows furrowed deeply. His fists were balled at his sides. Something was horribly wrong. My smile faded instantly, replaced by a knot of dread twisting in my gut. Oh God, did I mess up the files he asked me to compile? Lucas had been pushing for my promotion, giving me more responsibilities to prove I was worthy of a higher position in his family’s company. If it was that bad—if I’d screwed up enough to make him this mad—then the promotion was gone. When he reached me, his chest was heaving with barely contained rage. I started to speak, my voice trembling slightly, my hands rising in a placating gesture. “Lucas, what’s wro.." But I couldn’t finish. His hand shot out, grabbing my arm in a vise-like grip, his fingers digging into my flesh with bruising force. He yanked me up from my seat, the chair scraping loudly against the floor, and started dragging me out of the office area. Pain shot through my arm, but it was nothing compared to the humiliation burning in my cheeks as heads turned, whispers erupting around us. Coworkers stared with wide eyes and open mouths, their curiosity palpable, making my skin crawl. I tried to wrench my arm free, my free hand prying at his fingers, my voice a desperate whisper. “Lucas, what’s wrong?” But he only tightened his hold, his nails biting into my skin, sending fresh waves of pain radiating up my arm. I winced, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes, but I bit my lip to hold them back. “Shut up, you fucking bitch,” he snarled, his voice low and venomous, his face inches from mine as he glanced back, his eyes blazing with betrayal. The words hit me like a slap, stealing my breath. He had never spoken to me like that. Never with such raw hatred, his lips curling in disgust. He dragged me to the closest supply closet, shoving the door open with his shoulder and flinging me inside. I stumbled, catching myself against a shelf, my heart pounding wildly in my chest. He slammed the door shut behind him, the sound echoing like a gunshot, and whirled to face me. His face was terrifying—red with fury, veins bulging in his neck, his fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. I pressed back against the wall, my body trembling, fear coiling in my stomach like ice. “Lucas,” I whispered, my voice breaking, my hands raised defensively, tears now blurring my vision. “What’s wrong? Is it the file? I’m sorry if I made a mistake. I went through it like a million times…” “I don’t care about the stupid file,” he spat, his voice rising, his hand slashing through the air dismissively. “Your test results came out today.” I froze, my blood turning to ice, my eyes widening in confusion and dread. Over the past few days, I’d been feeling ill, nauseous and exhausted. Two people in the office had come down with the flu, so we’d chalked it up to that. Lucas had insisted on calling his family doctor to check me out and run some tests. But now, seeing the rage in his eyes, my mind raced. Was it serious? God, was I dying? “You’re pregnant,” he said, the words exploding from him through clenched teeth, his face contorting with fury, his body rigid as if he might snap. The news hit me like a slap. I blinked rapidly, my mouth falling open, denial surging through me. No, that couldn’t be right. There had to be a mistake. My mind flashed to that night with Damien, the alcohol, the haze, the lack of protection. But I was on the pill. I couldn’t be that unlucky. “No. No, I’m not,” I stammered, shaking my head frantically, my voice rising in pitch, tears spilling down my cheeks. “I can’t be.” He yanked a crumpled letter from his pocket, his movements jerky and aggressive, and threw it at my face. The paper smacked against my cheek, stinging, before fluttering to the floor. “See for yourself,” he growled, his eyes boring into mine like daggers. “The doctor confirmed it.” I snatched it up with trembling hands, my fingers fumbling as I unfolded it, my vision swimming with tears. I skimmed the contents desperately, my breath hitching, but my eyes locked on the damning words: positive pregnancy test. This couldn’t be happening. Panic clawed at my throat. I was supposed to be safe. The pill should have protected me. But deep down, a sickening truth settled: it was Damien’s. Oh God, what had I done? “I know it’s not mine,” Lucas said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. Even I knew it probably wasn’t his, we hadn’t been intimate around that time. But I didn’t want to believe it. I couldn’t face the horror of it all. “I asked for the dates,” he continued, his lip curling in disgust. “It couldn’t possibly be mine. So now, is there anything you’d like to tell me?” I opened my mouth, words failing me but he cut me off, his voice thundering. “Don’t even dare lie. I’ll know if you do.” “I’m so sorry,” I choked out, my voice cracking, sobs wracking my body as I sank against the wall. “I was going to tell you.” He let out a dry, bitter laugh, throwing his head back. “Was going to tell me?” “I meant it,” I pleaded, stepping toward him, my hands outstretched, tears streaming down my face, my lower lip quivering. “I was scared at first, but I swear it was a mistake. I didn’t mean for it to happen. I was drunk, and I didn’t know what I was doing.” “Who is the father?” he demanded, his voice rising. “Lucas, please listen to me,” I begged, my voice hoarse, my body shaking uncontrollably. “I didn’t mean—” “Who is the father, Camille?” he roared, leaning in close, his breath hot on my face, his eyes wild with rage. “Lucas, please, I’m sorry,” I whimpered, covering my mouth with my hand, sobs muffling my words. “Who is the father?” he shouted, slamming his palm against the wall beside my head, making me flinch. “I don’t know,” I whispered, my eyes squeezing shut, shame flooding me. I could have told him who it was but I knew it would be a whole lot worse. Lucas would never forgive me if he found out that his best friend was the father. “You don’t know?” he echoed, his voice dripping with disbelief, his face twisting in revulsion. “I was drunk, Lucas,” I cried, my knees buckling as I slid down the wall, hugging myself. “I didn’t know what I was doing.” “You fucking slut,” he snarled, pacing the small space like a caged animal, his hands raking through his hair in frustration. “How many times did it happen? Jesus, how many people have you fucked during our relationship?” “Lucas, it was just that one time,” I sobbed, looking up at him through tear-streaked lashes, my face crumpled in despair. “It was a mistake. I didn’t mean for it to happen. I was going to tell you, but I was scared of your reaction.” “When were you going to tell me?” he mocked, his voice laced with sarcasm, his arms gesturing wildly. “When you’d passed the child off as mine? Huh?” “I was never going to do that,” I insisted, shaking my head vehemently, my voice breaking with sincerity. “I gave you everything you could ever wish for,” he hissed, pointing a finger accusingly at me. “Made you relevant. Made you someone. And this is how you pay me back?” “I didn’t mean for it to happen,” I whispered, my body heaving with sobs, my hands reaching out to him in vain. “I swear it.” “Go to your desk and clear your things,” he said coldly, his voice devoid of emotion now, his face hardening into stone as he turned away. “You’re fired.” “Fired? You can’t fire me,” I gasped, my voice trembling with disbelief as I pushed myself up from the floor, my hands shaking as I braced against the wall. “I haven’t done anything wrong.” Lucas’s face hardened, his dark eyes narrowing as he loomed over me, his jaw clenched tight with fury. “I don’t want you working in this company again. I’m giving you an hour to leave the premises, or I’ll call security.” I stood fully now, my legs wobbly, my heart pounding in my chest as I faced him. “I haven’t done anything, Lucas. Just give me a chance to explain,” I pleaded, my voice cracking, my hands outstretched toward him in desperation. “I don’t care what you have to say. You cheated on me,” he spat. "Nothing will justify what you did. I don’t want you in my life or in my office.” “You can’t fire me,” I insisted, my tone rising with defiance, my hands clenching into fists as I wiped tears from my cheeks. “What happens in our private life doesn’t concern our work life. I haven’t done anything to warrant being fired.” “It’s my company,” he snarled, stepping closer, his voice dripping with authority. “What I say goes here. I want you to leave this company, or I’ll have security throw you out.” Lucas turned sharply, his movements stiff with anger, and moved toward the door. But he stopped, his hand on the knob, and turned back to me. His lips curled into a condescending sneer, his eyes cold and dismissive as he delivered the final blow. “Oh, and make sure you clear your things from my house. I don’t want to see a trace of you there.” With that, he slammed the door behind him, the sound reverberating through the small closet like a gunshot, leaving me alone with my spiraling thoughts. The weight of it all crashed down, and I broke into tears, my sobs tearing from my throat as I slid back to the floor. Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably, my hands covering my mouth as I rocked back and forth. I had lost everything; my life, my job, my fiancé, all because of one stupid, drunken mistake. I don’t know how long I sat there, lost in my grief, until the door creaked open. A security guard stepped in, his expression stern as he cleared his throat. “Miss, Mr. Vaughan asked us to escort you out of the building,” he said. He helped me to my feet, his strong hand steadying me as I wiped my face with my sleeve, my legs trembling beneath me. He led me to my office, where another guard was already packing my things into a box; my photos, my mug, my personal files. The office buzzed with curiosity, every head turning as I passed. Whispers followed me, and I felt the weight of their stares burning into my back. Most of the women watched with glee, their lips curling into smug smiles, their eyes gleaming with satisfaction. It wasn’t a secret they’d wanted Lucas for themselves, and now, with my downfall, they reveled in it. When my things were packed, the guards escorted me out of the building. They left me standing outside. My eyes were still red and puffy from crying. I had stopped sobbing, but the ache remained. Passersby glanced at me curiously but I had nowhere to go. I’d moved out of my apartment weeks ago to live with Lucas, and returning to his townhouse was out of the question. I stood there, lost and hollow, my arms wrapped around myself, when Doris emerged from the building. Her face softened with concern as she hurried toward me. “Camille, what happened?” she asked, her voice gentle, her brows knitting together as she took in my disheveled state. “Oh dear,” she murmured, stepping closer and placing a hand on my arm. “Let’s get you home.” “I can’t,” I whispered, my voice breaking, my eyes dropping to the ground. “Lucas… he said I shouldn’t come back.” “Let’s go to my place,” she insisted, her hand squeezing my arm reassuringly. “But… you still have work,” I protested weakly, my gaze flickering back to the office building. “I took permission to leave,” she said, waving a hand dismissively. “Besides, everyone’s worried about you. Let’s get out of here.” She hailed a cab with, guiding me into the backseat with a protective arm around my shoulders.

😍🔞I bought him for the night. He took it as permission to ruin me.The moment the door closed, he chained my wrists above my head. “Little redhead,” he whispered, “why does a delicate human tremble like an omega in heat?” I should’ve been terrified. But his scent, his voice, the way he scraped his fangs along my throat— it lit something feral inside me. He promised to drag the truth out of me, one sinful sound at a time. What he doesn’t know is the truth he’s hunting— the runaway princess— is already moaning beneath him. ------------------------------------------- Chapter 1 KAT “You look perfect, Princess Katerina.” My fists clenched tightly in my lap. I had to make a conscious effort to breathe and calm myself. Perfect. I looked like a doll. The kind meant for display, pristine and never touched. The useless kind. Pale porcelain skin with the finest makeup applied so expertly that it looked seamless. Big blue eyes with lashes that didn’t need extensions. Plump red lips with the usual polite smile. “Thank you,” I answered, nodding at the makeup artist. “They’re waiting for you downstairs. Should I call your brother to accompany you?” My fists balled again. Lordswood Castle was more secure than any fortress. Bugs couldn’t get in without stringent vetting and permission, but even that wouldn’t be enough to get them into the inner keep. Yet they still accompanied me everywhere like a child. Still, all of this was for a good reason. Every sacrifice would be worth it in the end. “That won’t be necessary. Thank you, Alanna,” I said as I stood. “But the Alpha said—” “I’m sure I’ll be fine,” I interrupted, maintaining the smile so deeply ingrained in me it felt fused to my face. I straightened the long skirt of my dress and adjusted my posture, although this was easy to do thanks to the corset. It was as stiff as a board; I couldn’t slouch even if I wanted to. Only sparing a glance in the mirror, I nodded at the team of women who’d dressed me and headed out of my dressing room. I did look perfect, I had to give them that. Not a single strand of blonde hair out of place, shoulders straight, head held high. And every piece of clothing on my body was worth more than most people made in a year. I was the prize. The one raised to be envied. To complete my true mate’s life. To be a trophy. A prisoner. My smile slipped, and my steps faltered at the door to my bedroom. I was being unfair. My life was a privilege; I had to be grateful. My parents loved me and gave me everything, and my dear brother, Kostas, would burn the world down for me if I asked. “Why do they even bother? She’ll be eighteen soon; I doubt a true mate will fall in her lap anytime soon. They’ve set their expectations too high; she’s just an omega.” My shoulders stiffened. They must have thought I left already. Omega. Weak. Doomed to submit to every wolf, a burden to the one I’d mate, yet the most treasured in my pack. The irony wasn’t lost on me. “Quiet! If you want to survive here, keep such thoughts to yourself.” “But everyone says—” “You’ll be out of the castle before lunchtime if you finish that sentence. Prince Kostas will make sure you never step foot through the complex gates again.” There was silence after that, but I wanted that woman to finish what she was about to say. Everyone said what? I was stuck in the inner castle most of the time, and no one dared say a word out of place. Gossip hardly ever reached my ears, but when it did, it was the boring type. I bit back a huff. It was unladylike. Mother would have a fit if she heard me. Squaring my shoulders again, I stepped out into the wide hallway alone. There was still a chill in the air outside as we welcomed the spring, but all the rooms in my wing were nice and toasty. My father hated it if I so much as sniffled. He hardly let me out in the winter. But spring was here. The flowers were starting to bloom. And that meant long walks in the gardens, and the Spring Ball. Some excitement after a long winter. Anything was better than sitting alone with my thoughts. My steps were steady as I approached the two guards in all black combat uniforms at the end of the hallway, and I almost laughed when they turned to me and stiffened. The panic on their faces was priceless. “Your Royal Highness, please wait here to be accompanied,” one of them said with a small bow. I knew they would mindlink my brother the second they saw me, but I was prepared. I quickened my steps past them and turned into the next hallway, where several other guards waited. It was overkill, but what was a girl to do? I was assigned more guards than the king and queen. How far could I go this time? The entry hall, perhaps? I half jogged past the guards, and was almost at the staircase when my brother's head appeared as he jogged to the top. Damn. I’d almost made it. Sighing, I slowed my steps and met my brother’s scowling face. “You didn’t wait for me, Katerina,” he said. “I walked down two hallways by myself, Kostas. If I can’t even do that, how will I ever take care of my mate?” Predictably, the scowl deepened, and I almost giggled. My brother was a handsome man. He was the complete opposite of me. Towering height, brown-eyes, curly brunette hair, and there was nothing delicate about him. He was a warrior, the Lordswood Pack beta, second only to my father with his intimidating aura. I’d been told that was true even if he stood in a room full of alphas. “He will have to take care of you,” Kostas said firmly. “And don’t forget, this castle will be your home.” Of course. How could I forget that even after the mating ceremony, I would live within the same walls? Maybe a new face would change things. Shake me out of the monotony. There were only so many languages and musical instruments I could learn, and I was growing tired of all the law, financial, and economics books. Perhaps once I was mated, they would allow me to apply my studies in practice. Or even learn something else, like training with the rest of the pack. Now that was a dream worth holding onto. Kostas linked our arms and started walking. “Remember what I told you about today,” he said. “There are others on the list, but this one is a good candidate.” They’d said that about all of them. I’d been meeting ‘candidates’ since I was five, first under the guise of playdates, and then openly as my potential future mates. Over the past few weeks, I had a date every day, sometimes twice a day. Mother was in panic mode. My parents were ready to seal my fate. Resisting the urge to sigh again, I smiled up at my big brother. “If you say he’s right for me, then he must be,” I said. “Of course he is. He has a bright future ahead of him. Currently top of his class and excels in his training. Only someone like that could be your true mate,” Kostas said, his scowl vanishing. He beamed down at me, and I felt the warmth of his love and protection. Every misgiving I had about these dates deflated as I squeezed his arm. “I bet he will make an excellent addition to our pack.” Maybe mating wouldn’t be so bad, after all. I knew my parents wouldn’t pressure me to have children too soon. They just wanted to make sure I was settled in any eventuality. The whole pack would respect someone they approved of, and a true mate would never hurt me. We descended the grand staircase slowly, into the entrance hall. It was almost noon, so the servants should have been busy preparing lunch or cleaning the hundreds of rooms within the great stone structure. But there was silence. Too quiet. A ‘mood’, no doubt orchestrated by my mother. This new date must have been very important to bring things to a halt like that. Or mum was just desperate. “The sun’s out today. We’ll meet him in the courtyard,” Kostas said. I gasped and stopped walking, gripping my brother’s arm. “Really?” I asked, holding my breath. “It’s a beautiful day,” Kostas said gently with an indulgent smile. “You should see the first blooms with your future mate. I already told them to prepare your cloak.” I ignored the optimism in his words and half-dragged him through the halls on the lower floor. The courtyard. How I’d missed that. Even if the date didn’t go as planned, sitting in the open with the sun on my face would make up for it. “Mum and Dad have official business, so they will meet him later for tea. Your chaperones are already waiting,” Kostas said, then added with a chuckle, “Slow your steps. Don’t be so eager.” Right. I had to be proper. I was Her Royal Highness Princess Katerina Lordswood of Kingsland. There should be nothing to criticise about me. “Sorry, brother.” I lowered my head as my chaperones approached, and one of them draped my warm cloak over my shoulders. “I’ll be close, so don’t be afraid,” Kostas whispered, kissing my forehead before he stepped back. His words sent a chill down my back, but I brushed them off. I was going outside! My first genuine smile since I woke stretched across my face as the doors were opened, and I finally felt the sun directly for the first time in months. I didn’t mind the slight bite on my cheeks as we stepped out into the cold. I was eager to meet the next man on my parents’ dating list, just to walk around the gardens. My step remained surprisingly steady, and I kept my hands together in front of me and my head lowered. A lady walked with grace. An Omega with humility. We walked along the paved path by the pond towards the main seating area until we reached my favourite cherry blossom tree right in the middle of the yard. My smile widened. The tree was blooming. Soon, the whole courtyard would be filled with the lovely scent of the flowers. A little boy stood beside it, admiring the tree, hands in his pockets. He was dressed in a suit, as most visitors did. I wondered who his parents were. Perhaps they were the ones the King and Queen were entertaining. I stopped beside him and breathed deeply. “Your Highness,” the boy said, stepping back from me and bowing. “No need to be so formal,” I said, smiling at him. He was curly-haired and pimply, his face suggesting he was no older than twelve or thirteen. He probably hadn’t shifted yet, but his alpha blood was undeniable. In a few years, my wolf would submit to his, despite my royal bloodline. I looked away from him and suppressed that thought. Happy thoughts only. Today was a good day. “What’s your name, little boy? Are you here with your parents?” I asked. Did my tone change to that annoying one adults used on babies? I cringed slightly when I saw the tick in his jaw and the way his fists balled up. Even his grey eyes grew colder. His anger was almost like a slap on my cold cheeks. Weird. He must have been too young to start learning how to control himself. It was more important for alphas, considering how much damage even their auras could do to weaker wolves. “I’m not a little boy, Your Highness. I’m fifteen. My name is Justin.” He looked at me expectantly. Was I supposed to know him? Were his family members of the court? My father’s business allies? I’d been memorising names and faces for so long that sometimes they just blurred together. Still, I couldn’t be rude. “Nice to meet you, Justin. Perhaps we will see each other again soon. I’m here to meet someone. My brother won’t be pleased if he finds you here.” I almost giggled at the thought of Kostas’ reaction once he found out someone had slipped past him. The inner courtyard was sacred. My gaze darted across the manicured space, eager to meet my millionth date and take him for a tour. Despite Kostas allowing me outside so soon, my time would be limited. I’d make the most of it. “I’m who you’re meeting, Your Highness. I’m your date.” My smile dropped. My face twisted before I could stop it, my eyes widening as I looked at the boy who probably still had his nose wiped by his mother. What. The. Actual. Fuck? Chapter 2 KAT No. No, no, no. This couldn’t be real. This had to be a prank. A test. I’d gone through so many dates that the pool must have shrunk to almost nothing, but there was no way my parents thought this snotty little boy was suitable for me. Goddess forbid if there was actually a spark of a bond with him. What the hell were they thinking? I’d be eighteen in a few days. This wasn’t just a bad match; it was illegal! “Princess Katerina?” His babyish voice cut through the horror spiralling in my head, and I quickly smoothed my expression, forcing it back into something polite. Something practised. “M—my apologies, Justin,” I said, looking back at the two chaperones nearby. One of them looked away, her mouth twitching. They knew. They knew I’d been buffed and fluffed for a mere little boy. Was I a joke? “Please,” I said, remembering my manners. “Let’s sit.” One of Mother’s best tea sets was already laid out on the table, and a servant waited at a respectable distance, ready to serve. As if the day wasn’t cursed enough, the sun slipped behind a cloud, taking its warmth with it. Justin smirked as he dropped into a chair across from me, his eyes drifting lazily around the courtyard. His earlier tantrum seemed forgotten as he slouched in his seat and chuckled to himself. Obviously, he knew nothing about etiquette. Nothing about him stood out besides his alpha aura. There was no way this kid excelled at anything. “This place is really cool,” Justin said, lifting the delicate teacup like it was a soda can. “I thought you’d be mated before my turn came around.” My cheek burned as embarrassment rolled through me. His turn? Anyone who made it on my parents’ list was privileged. Saying they were taking turns sounded too vulgar. It was as if I were some box to tick off. Like he was doing me a favour. I looked away and sipped my tea, too. There was a whole meal coming after that, but I’d lost my appetite, and I suddenly didn’t feel like walking with this boy. “You’re only a child. It was obviously a mistake,” I said calmly, keeping my voice even. I wanted to storm back into the castle and demand answers, but Mother had drilled it into me—poise, no matter what. I had a guest, so I had to entertain him, even if he was fresh out of nappies. I almost snorted, but swallowed it back. I had to endure this. So much for going for a walk. It would be like babysitting, and I really wasn’t in the mood for that. Still, this was better than the dates I’d endured the past week. A shiver rippled down my spine, and my hand trembled. The teacup clattered softly as I set it down, the uneven sound echoing across the courtyard. No. Not now. There was no point in dwelling on the past. “I’m not a child,” Justin said through his teeth, the earlier temper peeking through. Something about the flash in his eyes tugged at my memory. Why did that look so familiar? That thought brought me out of my head as I studied the kid again. Had I seen him at a ball? In the background, at a pack gathering I’d spied on from one of my windows? “But at least I’m getting this out of the way quickly,” Justin continued. “Gives me better odds of finding my mate when I shift.” Frowning, I met the brat’s gaze head-on, breaking another of my parents’ rules. “What do you mean by that?” “You know,” the boy shrugged. I didn’t. Wasn’t he there to see if he was a match? Then why was he still thinking of finding a mate when he shifted? Not that I would even entertain that thought, but what the hell? “Which pack are you from?” I asked, fingers curling in my lap. He was clearly uncultured to act like I wasn’t good enough for him. I was a princess! What could he possibly object to? “Ironbridge,” Justin answered, glancing around again before reaching into his pocket and pulling his cell phone out. He pointed the camera towards the cherry blossom tree as if it were a sightseeing tour. Unbelievable. The scenery was more fascinating to him than I was! At least he didn’t try to take a picture of me. How he’d snuck that thing into the castle was beyond me. Kostas banned recording devices because, in his words, “not everyone deserves to gaze upon your beauty.” I used to roll my eyes at that, but now I was grateful. I’d studied enough cases to know exactly how wrong it could get when someone captured the wrong kind of image. A guard materialised from some hidden place behind me and snapped the phone out of the kid’s hand. “Aw, come on,” Justin whined. “It’s just a tree.” The guard thumbed through something on the phone, frowning, and then slipped it into his own pocket. Guess the brat was shit out of luck. “Tell him to give me back my phone. I don’t know why they treat you like you hung the sun in the sky. I’m just like you, I’m a prince, too. My dad won’t let it slide if I say you stole from me.” “You’re an alpha’s son?” I asked, even though comparing any other alpha in the kingdom to Father was treasonous. But Mother branched into the farther territories years ago. This brat could very well have been a real prince, a son of one of the neighbouring three kings. Justin leaned back, folding his arms as if he owned the world. “Yeah. Alpha Carter. You don’t want to piss him off.” A sharp noise cracked the air. I blinked. The handle of my cup had snapped in my hand. I loosened my grip and let the pieces fall onto the table while my eyes widened at the boy before me. My pulse pounded in my ears. I couldn’t breathe past the lump forming in my throat. A memory flared. A different date. Hair pulling. Greasy hand on my thigh. Rising further. That laugh when he told me what he would do to me. Twisting my hands together, I looked back at the guard. Of course this kid was a Carter. Not a real prince, not even close. Alpha Carter would never be an alpha king in any lifetime. No wonder this kid looked familiar. “You should have followed the rules,” I said. I was surprised that my voice remained steady. “They’ll check it and give it back to you at the end of our... meeting.” No way was I calling this a date. Especially now that I knew who he was. Anyone from that vile cesspit of a pack wasn’t worthy of setting foot through our complex gates, never mind sitting across from me. Didn’t Kostas think so? Had I really been reduced to this? Having him there felt like a betrayal. “My brother Aaron said you’re insane. I see it now,” Justin sneered. “Said you smiled like a robot no matter what he said to you.” My hands twitched. Aaron had said a lot. “And Samuel said there’s not much between your ears,” he continued. Pot. Kettle. Black. Samuel had the body of an alpha and the brain of a potato. He didn’t look or talk like he’d ever read a book in his life. Perfect gentleman when he wasn’t leering, but I struggled to keep my eyes open. “And Jake...” The smile dropped off my face completely. My skin crawled like a hundred baby spiders had just hatched on me. Justin saw it and laughed, glancing behind me, obviously calculating how much he could get away with. “Jake said you’d only be good for one thing.” My gaze snapped back to his. Blood rushed in my ears, and my vision sharpened. Only a few weeks until my first shift, and already the beast within me was stirring. If I lost control now and shifted, I could tear this degenerate pup apart. Because he was unshifted, he’d be defenceless. It would be like toying with a human. “If your brothers said all that, why are you here?” I asked. Behind me, I sensed my chaperones edging closer. Did they hear him? “You really don’t know?” Justin laughed, clapping his hands as if this was entertaining. “There’s a saying. Life isn’t complete until you’ve dated the princess. If you want to find your true mate, you have to dump her first.” Behind me, one of my chaperones—the one who’d struggled not to laugh when I met Justin—giggled. She knew! My cheeks flamed again. Humiliation rose in my chest. I dated these boys for a reason, for the good of the kingdom, but this was what they thought of me? My chest compressed, and I felt my heart shatter. Did my parents know? Did Kostas? The fury I’d been swallowing all morning while my maids wrapped me up for this boy returned a hundredfold, forcing me to my feet. “Mr Carter, we’re done here.” Justin stood, still laughing, and gave a mocking bow. Every part of me called out to slap that smug look off his face, but my hands remained clasped in front of me. Proper. Still perfect. Even as an inferno burned within me. “I wasn’t staying here long anyway. We’re obviously, thankfully, not true mates,” he said. “Hand me my phone back and wish me luck for my future, Princess.” “Good luck, Mr Carter,” I said, a smile still on my face. “You’ll need it to find anyone who’ll put up with that stench of manure coming from your mouth. You talk a lot for a child who’s mediocre at best. Unsurprising considering who your father is. I’ll remember your name fondly the next time Alpha Carter bows at my feet. Goodbye, little boy.” Chapter 3 KAT “Katerina, open this door.” I glanced up from my textbook, waiting. Was today the day Kostas finally lost his patience and broke it down? I’d avoided him for a week, hiding behind Mother’s endless matchmaking. She’d ramped it up again, so much so that it felt like that was all I did. Wake up. Dress. Date. Get humiliated. Start again. My fury still simmered inside me. My skin itched, ready to burst from the unfamiliar emotions I’d been struggling with, yet I knew what they meant. It was almost time. I wanted answers, a reason for this humiliation, but I couldn’t bring myself to ask. My omega wolf was already cowering. Hiding. Submitting to my family’s will, like I’d been taught my whole life. Kostas knew what the Carter boys had said and done. I was under no illusion that those guards who appeared out of thin air to save me during my date with Jake hadn’t reported everything. But he’d still set me up with another boy who had Carter blood running through his veins. My head was a jumbled mess. I'd never once doubted my family's love for me until my date with Justin; those questions kept circling my mind. All week, I’d caught the glances from the servants. Saw them whisper. I couldn’t hear them, my wolf hadn’t surfaced yet, but I felt their words. My humiliation was constant. I felt naked. “Katerina!” Kostas growled, louder now. Swallowing, I stood slowly, smoothed down my dress, and pasted my smile back on my face. “I’m sorry, Kostas. I had my music on,” I lied, pulling my earbuds out for show. My brother frowned, silent for a while, before he stepped into my room. He didn’t buy it. I'm sure he already knew I was avoiding him. “It’s the Spring Ball tonight. Mother prepared your dress and mask.” He sounded anxious. Uneasy. Why? I’d been attending for years, secretly at first, when I hid behind the curtains in the grand hall. When I turned fifteen, I was officially presented—fully masked—and finally allowed to accompany my parents and brother. Behind the anonymity of the masks, I gained a little freedom. “I know,” I said. “I'll be ready on time, you don't need to worry.” “Your birthday is in a few days. Are you feeling... anything?” “No,” I lied again. Did he see through that? His gaze didn’t linger on my face. Kostas sighed and walked over to my pile of textbooks. Even on such a day, my work had to be completed. “Everything I do is to protect you, Katerina,” he said, running his hands through his hair. “I know.” I just wasn’t sure anymore what they were protecting me from. “You didn't meet anyone you liked this week?” No. No stirrings of a true mate bond. They had all dumped me, the same as the ones who’d come before them. The same as the Carter boys. “No, but I’ll tell you the moment I like someone,” I said, smiling as I reached for his hand. “I'm sure I'll find my mate soon. Don't worry, Kostas.” “I would prefer it if we found him now. Before your wolf presents herself,” Kostas said. So that was the reason for the overkill with the dates? My birthday? Had I run out of time? Would they choose any wolf, rather than my true mate? Anyone would be forgiven to think some great calamity was going to fall on me if I didn’t get marked and mated before then. But what greater calamity was there than mating a wolf who would not respect my boundaries or look past the limitations of my wolf? “I’ll try,” I smiled, “but could we forget about that for tonight? Can we just have fun?” His smile returned, faint and wistful. “Sometimes I forget how young you are. Of course, Princess. Let your hair down tonight,” he said. “But be careful. Things outside our walls aren’t as settled as I’d want.” Kostas never talked about anything outside our walls. Could this be what had my family anxious? Lordswood was, after all, the largest pack in father’s kingdom, and our kingdom was the largest of the four. Our complex was like a city; we were self-sufficient. It wouldn’t be the first time another kingdom thought they could help themselves to what we had. Was I too arrogant to assume they were all anxious because of me? “Finish your homework. They’ll come to help you soon.” After he kissed my forehead, he left, and my burning questions remained unasked. I was almost afraid to hear the answers. An hour later, several maids came into my room, my new dress and accessories in tow. Usually, I loved this part, but this time, lead settled on the centre of my chest. I was too anxious. I didn’t care about the layers of sapphire silk, the delicate silver-threaded mask, or the jewels for my hair. My chest still hurt. But I didn’t dare ask the stupid questions. Did everyone attending the ball know about this saying? Did they all secretly laugh at me? I had no idea how I got from my dressing room to meet my parents at the top of the main staircase. “You look beautiful, Katerina,” Queen Maria said, taking my hands in hers. I couldn’t see her face behind her mask, only her red curls piled on top of her head, but tears shimmered in her green eyes just as they had all week. My head switched from my simmering fury to concern for her. But it switched back just as quickly when I remembered the Carters and all the other recent dates. They’d all been carefully selected by my mother’s own hand. “Thank you, Mother,” I smiled. “So do you.” Both my parents did. Father was a typical alpha, towering over all us, even Kostas. He looked more dignified with his blue royal mantle draped over his shoulders. “Don’t forget yourself tonight, darling. There are too many eyes watching.” Her words fed the dread that had been brewing in the pit of my stomach. All those eyes would indeed be on me, just as they had since I was presented. But would they be laughing behind their masks? “Yes, Mother.” “If you get into any trouble, return to your room. Kostas will take care of it,” Father said, his voice low but commanding. King Christos didn’t need to raise his tone to make people obey his command. His aura could silence armies; which was how he’d earned the right to rule all the packs in the north. I’d yet to meet anyone who was as strong as he was. Or as gentle. As if he’d known that he scared me, he gently patted my shoulder. This was why my parents wanted a true mate for me. So he could soothe me when I was in distress. So he could protect me. So he could keep me caged within these walls with the servants whispering behind my back. “Let’s go,” Father said softly. “Our guests are all here.” We descended together, my father leading, Kostas behind us. Perfect. Regal. I was sandwiched like the fragile princess I was. This was my life. Privileged. Beautiful. Like a colourful bird in a cage. My chest welled, almost unable to push this thought back down. Behind the mask, the smile was gone. I was a prisoner. I had to leave. The music swelled in the great hall, and couples twirled in the middle. But the colours blurred around me. I forgot all the things I loved about the Spring Ball as that decision echoed in my mind. Was I really doing this? I knew nothing beyond these walls. How would I survive? I left my mother’s side, picked a drink, and slipped away. I didn’t stop walking until I was in the main courtyard. Sighing, I drained the drink in one go and looked up at the sky. For years, I’d imagined what it would be like to walk out of the castle. To find myself so I could be my own person. I’d even planned every step of it. I already knew how to get the suppressants from the hospital and which clothes I’d pack. But I was not capable of anything else beyond that. I was not my own person. “If you sigh any louder, people might think I’m doing something inappropriate to you.” I froze. My breath hitched as I turned to the voice. He sat on one of the chairs along the wall, legs crossed, hidden in the shadows. A stranger, yet that voice sent a jolt down my spine. It was deep and velvety, the gentle chords almost pulling me in like a rope. Everything else faded into the background as I stepped closer to him. Who was he? There was something different about him. Something dangerous. I didn’t feel an alpha aura around him, yet I sensed his power. “There she is. I wonder if that’s her next date.” The familiar voices behind me pulled me back. Carter voices. The laughter that followed sent the fury crashing back into me. My hands clenched as I turned back inside. That was it. I was done. I was leaving. Chapter 4 HUNTER That scent. Molten amber, smoked vanilla, and something unexpected. Chocolate peppermint? It drifted closer, teasing my senses. Faint, missing the earthiness of a wolf, yet no less intoxicating. I dragged in a lungful before I could stop myself. But the woman turned from me in a swirl of silk, her chin high and back stiff as she stormed back towards the pretentious castle that the king of the north called home. Golden hair coiled like a crown caught the light, almost matching its brilliance to the jewels adorning it. I almost growled, the beast within me urging me to go after her. My grip tightened on the chair’s arms hard enough to hear the creak. This wasn’t why I was here. I had to focus. The laughter of some teenagers drifting back inside after the girl trickled past me. “I can’t believe they think anyone will want her,” a boy snorted. “Even with her dowry, she’s going to weaken any pack she bonds with.” Was that her? The elusive princess of Lordswood? The one paraded like livestock by that irreverent king? That kid was disrespectful, but he had a point. Her reputation was in ruins. No self-respecting man would sign up for this, whether he was a true mate or chosen. Sighing, I leaned back. With a flick of my fingers, Elijah stepped from the shadows, silent as ever, and handed me a file. The useless Lordswood shadow guards likely wouldn’t even know he’d been there. “You were right. He’s here,” my beta said. I didn’t need to open it. Of course I was right. Only a psychopath would dance beneath the king’s nose with a target on his back. But was he acting alone? That part wasn’t clear yet. The bastard was getting under my skin. I stood and passed him the file. “Should I follow you? They are watching you. It seems they’re expecting you.” “He won’t make a move tonight. He’s taunting me,” I growled, adjusting my suit. “And I don’t care if they’re watching me.” Who would dare move against me? “Will you take your turn with the princess?” My head snapped to Elijah as he vanished back into the shadows with a chuckle. My turn? The fact that King Christos even dared to put my name on that list was insulting. My mask was a gold skull, and possibly the most ridiculous thing I’d ever worn. Christos Lordswood had made such things mandatory since he presented his ‘precious’ daughter, and it was another kick in the balls. I’d ignored the invite for years for that reason. But this time, lives were at stake. But no one would believe that when they walked through to the grand hall. It was pure decadence. Gold, silver, and royal blues everywhere. Priceless ornaments and jewels displayed like trinkets. A live orchestra played trending renditions, while servers floated by with glasses of wine that most packs couldn’t afford in a lifetime. I’d bet the feast laid out was just as ostentatious. Christos had no respect for the suffering of others, and it seemed neither did the other alphas. They stood apart, surrounded by their own, the facade of unity glaringly obvious. The Spring Ball meant nothing when their egos filled the entire hall. Christos was the king of no one. They all liked to pretend I didn’t exist. Alpha Carter’s gaze flicked to me, and his pasty face turned paler. Smirking, I raised a flute to him, and the spineless alpha looked away. Sighing, I got back to work. Weaving through the guests, eyes and ears open, I caught nothing but useless conversations. No one would whisper about bloodshed within Christos’s polished walls. A flash of blue caught my eye, and I stopped moving. It was the princess no one wanted. She glided through the room, accepting the way the crowd parted for her as if it was her right, and stopped beside her brother, another unbearable prick. The Lordswood pack was full of them. “Are you alright?” Prince Kostas whispered. I caught his words even above the music and chatter. The princess nodded but didn’t speak. Still no voice. Her sighs had been soft and breathy, like the start of a moan. I shook that thought loose, but the curiosity didn’t let go of me. What did she sound like? Whiny? Arrogant? “Tell me when you have enough. We’ll head back, I can have dinner sent to your room,” Kostas said, resting his hand on the top of hers. My gaze narrowed at the protective way he touched her hand. They were siblings, right? Kostas had beaten the living shit out of anyone who breathed wrong around the fragile princess. Overkill, for sure, but what did I know? I didn’t have any siblings. “Did you meet anyone... special?” Kostas whispered. Oh. Was the ball another meat market? Another chance to find this elusive true mate? Shaking my head, I set down my drink and prepared to leave. There was nothing for me there. I was better off watching my suspects as they went. Masks concealed everything, and I had no scents to track. Then she spoke. “No. But I’d like to dance before I go back to my room.” Fuck me. The whispered words snapped my head back to the princess. I’d expected her voice to be soft and shy, but it was low and firm. Measured. Like honey dripping off a silver spoon. A contradiction. My beast reared up, focusing on the princess again. “There’s no one here worthy of a dance with you,” Kostas said. “Shall I have this honour?” No one worthy? Oh? Grinning, I stepped forward, ignoring the alphas and lunas who hadn’t bothered to greet me, until I stood in front of the siblings. “Your Highness,” I said with a bow, “may I have this dance?” The princess looked at her brother like she was waiting for his permission. Would the great Prince Kostas Lordswood let his baby sister dance with the devil? My aura was buried, but I had no doubt Kostas knew who I was. He knew everyone within a mile of his sister. Sure enough, when I met the prince’s gaze, there was enough ice in it to burn. And fear? His temple throbbed above the phantom mask covering half his face. Would he defy me? “Kostas?” the princess asked, pulling his focus. “It’s up to you, Katerina. I won’t make you do anything you don’t want to do.” She hesitated, and then the princess released her brother’s arm and held out her lace-covered hand. Kostas’s mouth twitched, and the air around him cracked with unrestrained power. Until Katerina whimpered and flinched. Of course. The fragile little omega. She couldn’t take any discomfort. Kostas smiled and masked his aura as he rubbed her back. “Go on,” he said gently. “Dance. I have some people to talk to.” Katerina half turned, as if she would follow her brother, but I caught her hand in mine. With her full mask, I couldn’t see her expression, but her body stiffened. The tempo of her heartbeat jumped. Blue eyes clashed with mine. Fire flared in her eyes briefly. Maybe it was a flash of light, because she lowered her head submissively and allowed me to lead. Like a good little omega. I almost snorted at my thoughts as I brought her to the centre of the room and turned to face her. And then that scent hit me again. Fuck. Why the hell had I allowed Kostas’ words to provoke me? I didn’t give a shit if the prince thought me unworthy. But there I was, drawing the princess closer, inhaling her scent like I would die without it. I didn’t miss the eyes on us. The orchestra played on, but the room went quiet. The dancefloor cleared, and just like that, it was just the two of us in the room. She was small. Fragile. Barely up to my chest, I could see the top of her head. My hand circled her waist, settling on her lower back, pulling her close. The beast almost purred. Why did she smell so good? Feel so good? Beneath the layers of her dress, the warmth of her body seeped into mine. The princess gasped and stepped back, head bowed. The music drifted to my ears again, reminding me of where I was. I was being inappropriate. Sullying the precious jewel of Lordswood. “Pardon me, Your Highness," I said, reclaiming her hand. This time, I kept a respectable distance. We moved through the steps, flowing seamlessly. Goddess, she fit perfectly in my arms. If I just leaned in, if I pressed my mouth to her neck and— No. My grip tightened on her lower back even as I tried to ease away from her. What the hell was this? She was unshifted. Too young. Inexperienced. Even though I was at least eight years older than her, I’d shifted way before my time. Besides, she was that fucker Lordswood’s spawn. The music changed, snapping my attention back to the room and the omega who still refused to meet my gaze. I didn’t want such a spineless woman in my bed. The packaging was beautiful; no one would doubt that. But the blood in her veins was rotten. “I suppose I can consider this my turn,” I said, my voice flat. The princess’s head snapped up. Blue fire spat at me, this time unmistakable. Her shoulders squared, and she clasped her hands in front of her. “Yes, please do. My brother was right, you are not worthy. Enjoy the ball, sir.” She turned and walked away like she ruled the realm. And fuck if that didn’t make my beast howl. Chapter 5 KAT I calmed my breathing before stepping into the family dining room. Mother and Father sat together, holding hands and laughing softly. Kostas stood at the window, wine glass in hand, eyes distant. He didn’t look like he belonged in the same scene. He was too still. Too serious. The moment Mother saw me, she rose with practised grace and opened her arms. “Darling, come here,” she said brightly. Kostas turned, the frown gone like it never existed. The three of them smiled as if they hadn’t seen the way the guests had avoided me at the ball. As if I hadn’t been the only royal they all pretended not to see. I returned Mother’s embrace, letting her subtle scent smother me. She wore an evening gown, dripping in crystals, despite it being a rest day. I’d gone simpler. No corset and no full face of make-up. Mother’s subtle frown at my dress didn’t need words. But I didn’t offer an explanation. It’s not like they’d ever given me one. “You were the belle of the ball last night,” Mother said, guiding me to a seat beside her. “I have a good feeling about your upcoming appointments.” My fingers twitched in my lap, but I kept the smile on my face. “Oh? Did you notice anything?” Father asked her before quickly turning his gaze to me. “Has your wolf shown herself, Katerina?” “Not yet,” I said, too quickly. “She doesn’t need her wolf now,” Mother said, brushing it off. “She’s so close to shifting, her true mate would have sensed her already. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone comes calling very soon.” My heart twisted. A true mate. The dream I was raised to chase. Yet... “You can’t be sure, Mother,” I said, sipping my wine. I was surprised my hand didn’t tremble. “We had the best of the best from all the territories under one roof. Of course I’m sure,” Mother said, placing her hand in mine. “Trust me on this.” For the first time in a long time, Mother wasn’t twitchy or close to tears. Could she really have sensed something? But no. She said the same thing about a dozen times a year. My happiness had depended on the queen’s fluctuating moods for as long as I could remember. We were always either ecstatic or disappointed. I was tired. “I trust you,” I lied with a soft smile, just as the servants arrived with dinner. Across the table, I met Kostas’ gaze. He hadn’t said a word since I came in. He hadn’t said anything since the man on the dancefloor had humiliated me in front of everyone. In front of all the ‘best of the best’ in the wolf territories. His turn, he’d said. That bastard was no different from Justin and his brothers. Kostas looked away from me and picked up his cutlery to start eating. “When your mate reveals himself, we’ll throw the grandest wedding,” Father beamed. “I’ll walk you down the aisle, just like I always dreamed. Kostas, have you finished overseeing the housing project? Every unit must be furnished.” My father spoke like it was a done deal. My true mate would live in the castle with me, and his pack would join ours. But what if he chose not to? What if he didn’t want my brother as their beta? My gaze drifted back to Kostas. He didn’t look at Father as he said, “Yes, everything is under control.” But Kostas was the smartest person I knew. Hadn’t this thought crossed his mind? Hadn’t it crossed any of their minds that no one would want to live with the joke of the kingdom? “Perfect,” Mother said, clasping her hands. “Our little butterfly will have everything.” I tuned them out after that. Mother’s endless plans for the wedding. Father’s constant tweaking of the security plans and living arrangements. I’d participated in the conversations enough times to know them by heart. By the time dessert plates were cleared and we moved to the lounge, I could barely keep my mask in place. My stomach twitched with nerves, and my pulse echoed in my ears. This was it. The last supper. Would I ever see my family again? Would they understand why I had to do this? Would they forgive me? How disappointed would they be when they learned that I didn’t want the life they had so carefully crafted for me? “Are you alright, Katerina?” I smiled at my brother over my book. “I am. But you seem tired, though.” Was he burning himself out again? When I left, who would remind him to take care of himself? “Things have just been a little hectic, but I’m fine.” Was he lying? “If it’s about my birthday, we don’t have to make a big deal of it. The Spring Ball was grand enough.” “Nonsense,” Father said. “It’s not every day a wolf turns eighteen.” As if triggered by my anxiety, my body started to betray me. My skin itched, nerves flaring under the surface like a thousand sparks. The lights pierced my eyes, and every sound stabbed into my skull. The world sharpened until I could make out the silver strands in my father’s blond hair. I could smell the blood in the steak we’d just eaten, still clinging to the air. And then it was gone. Cut off. Silent. “What will you do if this doesn’t work out?” I blurted. The room stilled. I watched that panic return in my mother’s gaze before she forced a smile. “You will find one, Katerina,” Father said, voice firm. “Even if I have to knock on every door on the planet.” I clenched my wine glass until my knuckles ached. I wanted to scream. To ask why this mattered more than how they let those boys treat me. How they let people whisper about me and turn me into a joke. Instead, I smiled, as if I were grateful, and sat in silence as the conversation returned to my birthday. When my parents decided to retire to their wing, I held on a little tighter than usual. Kissed their cheeks a little longer. Memorised their warmth. By the time Kostas walked me to the door, my cheeks were numb, and my tears were seconds from bursting out. “Rest well. Tomorrow will be busy,” Kostas said. “I will.” “That man you danced with last night,” Kostas started. My fists balled before I could stop myself. That grey-eyed bastard. I shoved my memories back quickly and composed myself. Now was not the time to remember how he held me. Or the way his scent messed with my head. “Did you feel anything? Did your wolf stir?” “Thankfully not,” I lied. “He was insufferable.” I couldn’t quite forget the way his scent tangled with something inside me. My brother exhaled, and I saw the tension drain from his body. Was that the reason he’d been so quiet all night? He never worried without a good reason, so my assessment of that man must have been right. He was just a scoundrel. Someone not good enough for me. Such a man would never be my mate. “If you ever meet him again, walk away,” Kostas said. Well, that was easy. I didn’t even know what he looked like. “I’ll never be in the same room as him,” I promised. Kostas paused, and I thought he might say more, but instead, he hugged me tight and pressed a kiss to my temple. “It will get better. I swear it,” he whispered before he released me. He didn’t linger after that, and my chest ached when I watched him walk away. My dear brother. Would he be okay? Dragging my feet, I walked into my room without bothering with the light and sank into my couch. The tears came, falling silently as they had done many times before. I sat for hours, unable to stop them, unable to stop the stabbing pain in my chest. When the castle finally fell asleep and the guards started their change of shift, I rose and crossed to the back of my dressing room. My bag was packed full of suppressants, and I’d swiped a change of clothes from the laundry room. There was nothing else left for me to do. There was nothing for me in this castle. In this kingdom. My only chance at freedom lay beyond the border, in the human world. With my steps light, I hid in the shadows until I slipped through the cracks of the life they built for me. I wasn’t their butterfly anymore. Chapter 6 KAT The mirror was cracked and too small to show much, but the green-eyed redhead woman staring back at me didn’t need a full reflection to know she looked damn good. Green eyes sparkled beneath the uneven bangs of my pixie cut and my smile was wide. I turned back to the mess behind me. Clothes piled on one side of the bed, textbooks and files on the other, and somewhere behind all that was my defunct kitchen. It didn’t matter. I was finally moving out of this shithole. Squealing, I plopped onto the clear patch of my single mattress and picked up my envelope for the hundredth time. My bonus. My big, fat, life-changing bonus. Eighty hours a week, blood, sweat, and tears for almost two years, and those higher-ups at the Bureau of Non-Human Affairs had finally noticed me. My name wasn’t on the case file, but I cracked their case. I was their fucking hero. I deserved this. Besides, I hadn’t worked so hard just to write my name down on some file. I’d done the impossible. Permanent hire before graduation? Done. Youngest recruit? Also done. All that homeschooling had come in handy after all. The smile faltered. My chest tightened. Tears threatened, but I shoved the thoughts away. Today was a good day. I was done surviving, I was ready to live. Grabbing my keys, bag, and helmet, I kicked dirty clothes out of the way and headed out. I guess I’d have to deal with the mess before I officially started work on Monday. I was down to my last office outfit. Or fuck it, I’d just buy new clothes. My laughter rang out in the hallway as I walked to the stairs. I was still laughing when I reached the basement parking lot. I’d buy enough clothes that I didn’t have to repeat the same outfits every week. An apartment with enough room to swing a cat. A double bed without a thin, lumpy mattress! Kat Munroe was moving up. “Looking good, Kitty Kat.” Rolling my eyes, I didn’t turn back as I secured my crossbody bag across and put my helmet on. Leather booty shorts, matching jacket, thigh-high boots, and a top that could pass for a bra. Not a corset in sight. “Where are we going tonight?” The voice sounded closer, so I had to look. I hadn’t made it this far by being stupid. Two guys, the usual suspects, walked out from behind two pillars like they were villains in a D-list movie. Long-haired jock types. The type of human trash the Bureau usually handed down to the local agencies. It was a pity they couldn’t handle humans themselves or I’d have turned them in for being assholes. “Todd. Sam,” I greeted with a nod. “Just going for some groceries. Why are you lurking in a dark basement?” The two delinquents grinned and came closer. “You promised we’d hang out, Kat,” Todd drawled. “You’re not going back on your word, are you?” “Forget your groceries,” Sam added. “We’ll feed you something better.” Creepy. Did that shit ever work on anyone? “Maybe tomorrow night,” I said, turning back to my bike and swinging my leg over it. The two were on either side of me before I could grip the throttle. “You keep brushing us off, Kitty Kat,” Todd said, grabbing the handlebars. “You think that will work forever?” My motorbike was my pride and joy. Gleaming red and black with polished chrome, and an engine that purred like a beast. I’d skipped meals and rent for her. How dare this bastard put his hand on her? “We promise you’ll enjoy it,” Sam added, grabbing the other handle. I’d had enough. Removing my helmet, I ran my fingers through my hair and then smiled at one and then the other. Television was a great thing. More educational than the mountains of books in my father’s library. In three years, I’d learned that using brute strength wasn’t the only way to win. But it sure did help. I swung my helmet and cracked it hard against Todd’s head. Then a punch to Sam’s ribs made him swear and stagger back. The engine roared to life beneath me, and I peeled out before the losers could react. My laughter echoed in the parking lot, rising with the growl of the engine. Three years ago, someone would have come out of the shadows to handle those two. But I wasn’t that girl anymore. I couldn’t be. I sliced through the Friday night traffic with that ache in my chest. As always, guilt tore at me. Had they stopped looking for me? Were they okay? Did they hate me? If I went back now, would they accept the new me? The bright lights of the city flashed around me as I parked my bike and took my helmet off. I couldn’t dwell on that. I was finally about to get the life I’d designed for myself. Now wasn’t the time to falter. Pulse stood like a beacon in downtown Greenville, with a line already forming at the wide doors. A crowd spilt onto the sidewalk, and I could already feel the thumping of the bass from outside. When it was my turn, I proudly took out my ID before they could ask me and grinned at the bouncers. Twenty-one. My birthday. In the human world, I was now old enough to drink. The bouncer looked between my ID and my face before he gave a low whistle. “Happy birthday, Kathrine Munroe.” “Damn right it is,” I said with a wink. The velvet rope lifted, and just like that, they let me into the heart of the beast. Bass, bodies, and neon lights hit me all at once. The air was electric, and energy pulsed through the air. It was chaos, and I loved every second of it. I threaded my way through the crowds towards the bar, my body swaying to the music. This was freedom. The opposite of every ball I’d ever attended. Except in one way. So many people, so much laughter, yet I was still very much alone. Finally leaning against the bar, I waited for the busy bartender to notice me before I slid a twenty across the counter. “Whiskey. Neat,” I shouted above the music before I leaned back on it to scan the club. As much as I loved the freedom to drink without restrictions, that wasn’t why I was there. I’d been too busy juggling my degree and my internship, and now I was about to get busier. This weekend was the only time I could let my hair down. The only time I could feel... something. Kostas would lose his shit if he knew. Instead of making me panic, a thrill shot down my spine. I was my own person. I could make my own choices. I scanned the room, my eyes skimming past the boys trying to be hard on the dancefloor, the men leering at the women from the walls, the ones being too loud, attention-seeking. Until my gaze stopped at him. He leaned against the far wall, half in the shadow, half under the flickering lights. Dark shirt unbuttoned just enough to hint at the muscles underneath, and pants tight enough to make my heart flutter. No loud colours like most of the men around him. No attention seeking. He didn’t blink often as he watched the crowd. He just stood still. Like he was waiting for something. Like he was hunting. My body lit up like I’d finally found the piece I’d been looking for. I picked up my whiskey and headed straight for him without hesitating. The closer I got, the more my body reacted to him. It had been so long since I’d felt anything remotely similar that I almost panicked. But I shoved those thoughts back. This had nothing to do with my beast. Those suppressants had worked for three years, and they would continue to do so. The man’s head snapped towards me, and fuck. I couldn’t stop the gasp. He was beautiful. Hair cropped short, stormy grey eyes smouldering, and a five o’clock shadow. Older than me, for sure. More experienced. I could tell by the way his gaze dipped slowly, dragging over me, before he met my eyes again. It felt like a caress. The heat that pooled in my stomach was instant. How did a man do that with just his eyes? I stopped in front of him and tossed back the rest of my drink. Liquid courage. “Seen something you like?” I purred. His mouth curved, just barely. “Maybe.” His voice was deep and smooth, and it struck something inside me. Had I heard it before? At work? Or in my lectures? I tilted my head to look up at him. I would have remembered if I’d ever met someone like him. Despite the chaos of the club around him, he remained composed. Restrained. If this weren’t a human club, I would have suspected he was something else. Was he hunting for a little something for the weekend, then? I was more than ready to be his prey. Stepping closer, letting my gaze eat him up like he’d done to me. Yes. Yes, he’d do. “Then what are you going to do about it?” I asked. “You tell me,” the man said. This was my cue. I’d studied all those smutty television shows just for this moment. “I’d like to buy you for the night.” His brow lifted slightly, and his mouth curved again. “You’re very blunt.” I shrugged. “It’s my birthday. I’m celebrating. If you’re not available, I can find someone else.” The little smirk fell off his face, and the air shifted. He stepped away from the wall slowly. Deliberately. I felt very much like his prey. My heart slammed against my chest when he stepped into the light. Goddess. He was even hotter up close. Sharp jawline, tall, broad shoulders. I felt his presence all around me. “And what exactly do you expect from me, birthday girl?” he drawled. My breath caught. Electric shocks zapped down my spine, and I almost stepped back. But this was what I wanted. “Surprise me,” I whispered. The man licked his lips. Then he reached for my empty glass and set it on a table next to us. “Come with me.” And I did. I followed the stranger through the crowd like I hadn’t watched hundreds of true-life documentaries about what could happen to me. Not because I was drunk. This wasn’t about rebellion. This was because, for the first time since I left home, I was going to do something I could never undo. I was going to give myself to someone other than my true mate.

😭💔💔💔I have the best mother-in-law in the world, yet I couldn’t win my husband’s love. I once naively believed our daughter’s arrival might change his heart. Then, at her birthday party, I saw him and another woman holding our daughter’s hands — standing together like a perfect family portrait. After seven years of marriage, I had lost completely — not only his love, but even my daughter’s gaze no longer belonged to me. In that moment, my heart shattered like glass. So I quietly resigned from my job, mailed the divorce papers, and completely left their world. This time, I made a clean break — without a single glance back. ================================ Chapter 1:The Family Of Three Soraya Montclair lasted 120 days without a word from her husband. She thought she’d already survived the worst. Until tonight. Under the stage lights, her daughter walked out—hand in hand with his mistress. “Mommy,”she called sweetly… but not to her. The audience applauded. Her husband stood beside them, like it was always meant to be this way. And Soraya? Just a stranger in the crowd. The first piano note rang out. And something inside her finally broke. *** ~Soraya~ “Excuse me,where’s the auditorium?”Soraya asked the school’s security guard. “That way,”the guard pointed.“Are you attending the recital?” “Yes,my daughter is playing the piano today,”she happily shared.“She doesn’t know I’m coming.I’m surprising her.” “Well, better hurry,ma’am.It’s about to start.Good luck to your daughter!”the guard answered. “Thank you!”Soraya clutched the small gift bag tighter and dashed off,her heels tapping across the marble floor. Soraya missed her daughter so much. Her little girl,Sage, bright and beautiful, was her world.Soraya swore she would hug and kiss her the moment she saw her. She wanted to look her best for Sage, wearing her favorite dress and the perfume her daughter once said smelled like“home.”Because lately,“home”had been slipping away. Why?Because someone had been trying to steal her daughter’s affection, and that worried her the most. Her husband,Calum Montclair, had sent her on a business trip for four months. While she was gone, she rarely had contact with Sage.Worse, she felt as though her daughter had been avoiding her. Soraya’s trip wasn’t due to end until next week, but she worked long hours to finish early. The auditorium was packed when she arrived. There were no seats left. She stood at the back, craning her neck, clutching her gift and her phone. Soraya texted her husband, letting him know that she was already there: [I can’t find you and Sage.Where are you?I just arrived at the auditorium.I made it to Sage’s recital!] There was no answer, not that she expected any. The truth was,her husband never loved her.She had come to terms with that. The only person who kept her holding on to her marriage was Sage. It didn’t matter, though. She was used to her husband’s indifference. She just wanted to see her daughter. The recital began. The auditorium came to life as kids from Evermoor Academy began their performances. Phones were up,taking photos and videos.Around Soraya, people clapped enthusiastically. Some parents even joined their children’s performances. “Sage, where are you?”Soraya looked around, but still, she couldn’t find her daughter. She managed to move past the crowd. And finally, when she reached the center of the auditorium, she noticed her husband’s tall frame. He was seated in the front row, looking as handsome as ever. But when Soraya saw who was sitting beside him,she froze. Her face turned pale, and her hands trembled. Before she could process anything, the host’s voice echoed through the speakers. “And next to perform is Sage Montclair! She will be playing a classical piece on the piano with her mom!” The words rang in Soraya’s head. ‘Sage is performing with me?’she thought, confused. She and her daughter hadn’t practiced at all.She had been gone for four months.Although,Soraya had been the one who taught her daughter how to play. But when her daughter stepped onto the stage, everything became clear. She was not the“Mom”they were referring to. They were referring to someone else. Walking onto the stage beside her daughter was Rose Becket, her husband’s mistress. Yes,Soraya was married, but her husband loved another. The next few minutes felt like torture.Soraya could only watch as her beloved daughter played the piano beside Rose, each note striking deeper than the last. As they played,Sage glanced up at Rose with a smile so pure it shattered Soraya’s heart.Their fingers moved in perfect harmony. It was an unspoken bond on full display. ‘So this was why Sage had been secretive about the recital,’Soraya realized bitterly. Her daughter, the child she carried for ten months, the little girl she raised and loved for six years, had chosen another woman to share her music, her joy,her heart. Of course,it made her angry. This was Calum’s mistress, after all! How could Calum let Rose play with Sage? And Sage already knew Soraya detested Rose! By the time Sage’s recital ended,Soraya was burning with rage. She barely heard the host call Calum to the stage. “Let us also welcome Sage’s dad up to the stage, our principal sponsor for today’s event,Mr.Calum Montclair!” Soraya watched her husband’s proud expression.Calum wore a custom-made suit, his tall frame and chiseled features ever so defined. He stood beside Sage and held her hand. Then he smiled at Rose. That smile was priceless, gentle, and full of adoration. ‘So he does know how to smile,’Soraya muttered.Because in front of her,he only ever wore indifference. “Wow,such a lovely couple.” “And they have a beautiful child as well.” Soraya overheard the praises, and instantly,a tear slid down her cheek;her throat felt paper-dry. ‘Indeed,’she thought.‘They look like the perfect family of three.’ Calum Montclair, the CEO of the Montclair Group, was every woman’s desire. He was the wealthiest man in Cedar Heights, having transformed their family business into a thriving empire.Rose Becket,on the other hand, was said to be a gifted entrepreneur, having launched a fashion line immediately after her doctoral degree. In the eyes of many, they were a perfect couple, but no one knew that Rose was merely…the other woman. Just when Soraya thought she had seen enough, the host encouraged Sage to say a few words. And her little girl proudly said,“I would like to thank my Mommy Rose for coming to school today and playing with me!She is so pretty, smart, and talented! And I’m so happy Daddy came to my recital. It’s his first time!” The crowd laughed at Sage’s excitement, whereas Rose smacked Calum’s arm, teasing him. Everyone in the auditorium was amused…except Soraya. Her heart shattered into a million pieces. She mused silently,‘If they were the perfect family of three…then where do I belong?’ *** The recital was over. The crowd began to disperse. But Soraya stood still for a moment, her heart refusing to move on. Then she saw them. Calum.Rose.And Sage. Her Sage. They were together like a picture-perfect family. Despite the growing ache in her chest,Soraya forced her trembling legs to move.As she approached,Sage’s teacher,Miss Gale, noticed her and froze. “Mrs.Montclair…”the teacher murmured. Her expression was a mix of sympathy and shock. “I’m sorry,Mrs.Montclair.”If anyone,Miss Gale had witnessed all of Soraya’s sacrifices for Sage in school. She knew,Soraya was the rightful Mrs.Montclair.When Sage got hurt or sick while in school,Soraya always came to her daughter’s aid.Soraya attended most school activities without Calum. Soraya averted her gaze. “It’s fine,”she whispered to Miss Gale, though nothing about it was. When Calum’s eyes met hers, his expression hardened.Deep lines etched across his face as his brows furrowed.Without a word,he reached for Sage’s hand and guided Rose away, right past her. Like she was invisible. “Sage!Sage, wait!”Soraya called, running a few steps after them. Her daughter turned. For one hopeful second,Soraya thought Sage would run to her.But instead,Sage’s eyes darted toward Rose, and she looked away. Then,as if in slow motion,Sage reached for Rose’s hand instead. Soraya’s chest tightened. She could barely breathe as she followed them out of the auditorium, ignoring the stares that followed. By the time she caught up,they were already at the parking lot. Sage and Rose were seated in the car.Only Calum stood outside, his posture cold and guarded. “Why are you back?”he demanded. His jaw clenched, hands buried in his pockets like he was trying to restrain himself. “I wanted to make it to my daughter’s birthday,”Soraya said, forcing a smile.“Can’t I—” “You’re not invited,”Calum snapped. Chapter 2:Replaced ~Soraya~ ‘Not invented?’The words hit like a slap. Sage’s birthday was two days away. That was Soraya’s other reason for returning early. “What?”Soraya blinked, her voice trembling.“What do you mean I’m not invited?I’m Sage’s mother.” “We’ve already made arrangements,”he said flatly.“I’m introducing Rose to new friends. So no,you’re not coming.” Her voice broke as she shot back,“You don’t get to decide that,Calum! She’s my daughter too!” Calum’s lips curled cruelly.“Then go ahead.Ask Sage.” He motioned to the car.The window rolled down with a soft hum. Sage’s small face appeared,so familiar, yet so painfully distant. “Sage, sweetheart,”Soraya said softly, trying to steady her voice.“Aren’t we going to celebrate your birthday like we always do?At home?Mommy’s back.I can bake your favorite cake.” Her daughter fidgeted, glancing toward Rose and Calum. “Sage, please,”Soraya whispered, her chest tightening.“Don’t you miss Mommy?” She hoped again. In her mind, she prayed to the heavens. Calum’s voice cut through the air.“Go ahead,Sage.Tell her.” Sage swallowed hard. Then, with her little voice trembling, she said,“I’m sorry,Mommy. You’re not invited to my birthday.Daddy and Aunt Rose already made plans.” For a second,Soraya forgot how to breathe. “Sage…you don’t mean that,”she said, tears spilling freely now.“I’m your Mommy.I love you more than anyone.” “Sage, don’t you love Mommy anymore?”Soraya tried again. Sage opened her mouth, but she closed it again. Then, after looking at Rose, she turned to Soraya.“I want to celebrate my birthday with Aunt Rose.” Soraya’s heart sank altogether. Because Sage’s choice was clear. Her daughter preferred Rose over her. “I’m sorry,Soraya,”Rose said smoothly, placing a hand on Sage’s shoulder.“But it’s her birthday.Whatever she wishes for,she gets.” Then, with a smug smile,Rose added,“And she wants to spend her birthday with me.” “We are not coming home.”Calum didn’t even look back.He opened the driver’s door, got in. “Calum,”she called.“Calum, wait!I’m not done talking to Sage!” But despite her plea, the car drove past her. “Wait!”Soraya ran.Tears, yet again, spilling down her face. Because she tried so hard to chase after Calum, she ended up falling on the ground and spraining her ankle! “Mrs.Montclair!”Miss Gale noticed her and offered help.“Let me take you to the hospital.” Soraya looked up and caught a view of her daughter’s face looking out the window, just as Calum’s car left the parking lot. Sage saw. Calum surely saw,but neither of them bothered to stop the car and check on her. *** “Soraya!Oh,my goodness! How are you?”Lyra Hayes,Soraya’s long-time college friend, came to the hospital to help her. Sage’s teacher could only manage to take her to the hospital, but she had other things to do.So,Soraya called her friend over. Soraya was in the ER,getting her ankle wrapped. When the nurse was done, she shared with her friend.“I tried to chase after Calum’s car.” It had been a long time since Soraya and Lyra connected. Her friend had been away for a while, working in another city. But thankfully, that day,Soraya’s call made it through, and Lyra was available. She told Lyra everything that happened earlier that day. “Oh,my god,Soraya. This has gone too far,”Lyra said.“Even Sage?” Soraya did not answer first. She grabbed her phone and sent her daughter a message:[Sage,I really miss you.Where are you and your daddy?] She waited, and two check marks appeared on the messaging app,but Sage did not reply. Soraya:[Don’t you want to see me on your birthday?] Still, there was no reply. “Lyra,I’m tired,”she said, tears gathering in her eyes. Her friend nodded. She offered Soraya a hug and said,“I can imagine.Seven years into this marriage, and this is what you get in return.” She cried hard. Her friend cried with her. Because of the pain she felt,Soraya started counting numbers in her head.It was one of the ways she tried to take control of her emotions.‘Four.Three.Two.One.’ Lyra was one of those who had witnessed all her sacrifices for Calum and Sage.So her friend knew just how deep her pain was. “I’m really tired,”Soraya repeated.”If Sage doesn’t want me anymore, then what’s the point of staying?” Lyra nodded. “It’s time,Soraya,”Lyra said, pulling away. “Can you help me get a lawyer?I want to draft a divorce agreement,”Soraya said. *** Soraya had discovered her husband’s affair with Rose more than six months ago.How long had it been going on?She never found out. Only a handful of people knew Calum was married—his parents and a few trusted friends. So when he began showing up at public events with Rose,no one questioned it.No one knew he already had a wife waiting at home. The Montclairs objected,of course.Calum’s parents,Amanda and Cedric, adored Soraya. They tried everything to make their son love her. They even encouraged her to work at the Montclair Group. So that she could stand by his side and earn his approval one small step at a time. She gave up her career for him.Her ambitions. All for a love that never came.Instead, the more she tried, the colder he became. By the time Soraya learned about Rose,it was already too late.Calum had introduced Sage to her long before. Sage was too young to understand. She was just a child. She was innocent, curious, and easily won over by kindness. “Aunt Rose is really pretty,Mommy. She dresses really nice. She buys me gifts all the time. She’s Daddy’s friend,”her daughter once said, smiling. Back then,Soraya hadn’t thought much of it.But when whispers reached her ears, the rumors about Calum and a beautiful entrepreneur named Rose Becket, something inside her twisted. The name rang a bell. And then everything made sense. She confronted Calum, trembling, angry, humiliated. He didn’t even look up from his work. “Mind your own business,”he said. That was how insignificant she was to him. It hurt. It hurt over and over again. Following that confrontation,Calum sent her away on a business trip. “Only you can close this deal,”he said. For the first time,Soraya believed he trusted her with something important. In those four months, she worked day and night, desperate to make him proud. But it was all a lie. Apparently,Calum had planned it from the start. He wanted her gone.He wanted Sage and Rose to have time together,to build a bond in her absence. Now that she was back, she realized what he had truly accomplished. He hadn’t just betrayed her. He had replaced her in Sage’s heart. Chapter 3:Choose Herself ~Rose~ In a high-end luxury penthouse,Rose was reading Sage a bedtime story. As she did,the young girl looked around the room, her eyes wide with wonder. Rose was pleased. After all,she had prepared the room for Sage. The bed was big and fluffy, with light curtains hanging from the window. On the walls were posters of Sage’s favorite girl band. Her favorite books were stacked neatly on the table beside the bed. Rose had gone all out,as if for someone she deeply cared about. Why?Because Sage cared. That’s what made her so easy to spoil…so easy to win. Rose had watched her quietly over the past few months, noticing how Sage lit up with attention and gifts, and how she softened with kindness. And as Soraya started slipping from Sage’s thoughts,Rose didn’t have to say much. A small comment here,a quiet smile there…It was enough. Sometimes, love wasn’t stolen. It was gently replaced. And Rose knew how to do that—especially with a child who still believed the world was kind. “The end,”Aunt Rose said after closing the book. “Aunt Rose, this house you’re staying in looks very new and expensive too,”Sage said. “Your dad bought it for me.That’s how much he cares about me,”Rose replied. “Why doesn’t Daddy care for Mommy?”Sage asked.“If only he would care for her and show up at home to celebrate my birthday.” Rose shrugged and said,“To care for someone, you can’t force it.” She didn’t know if Sage would understand, but she hoped the little girl would. After all,Calum never cared for Soraya. They were married, but there was never a real relationship between them. At best,Soraya was a mere surrogate. “But Mommy loves me,”Sage said, looking conflicted. “Oh,my poor baby.”Rose offered an embrace and hugged her.“I know your mom loves you.But sometimes, love isn’t enough to keep a family together.” “Are you sure about tomorrow?Aunt Rose and your daddy can always step away for your mommy,”Rose suggested. Sage shook her head.“No,I want to be with you and Daddy on my birthday.” A triumphant smile spread across Rose’s face. She had been patient, but she knew it wouldn’t be long now.Surely, with everything going on,Soraya would break. After putting Sage to sleep,Rose smiled. She walked back to the study, where Calum had been working on his laptop. Earlier’s encounter with Soraya was unexpected. She wasn’t supposed to be back until next week. Honestly?Rose was worried Soraya would spoil the birthday party she had planned for Sage, but to her surprise,Calum’s daughter didn’t want her mother there! It was perfect. Her plan was moving forward, faster than she expected. “Sage is asleep,”Rose said to Calum. “Good,”Calum simply said, his fingers still working on the keyboard. “I think I’ve totally won her over,”Rose claimed, walking toward him and sitting on his lap.“You didn’t think I’d be able to do it,did you?” Calum stopped whatever he was doing and wrapped his arms around her.“Hmm.You did well.” Rose kissed Calum, and within minutes, sensual moans filled the air. She rejoiced inside. There was no sweeter victory than having the wealthiest man in the city wrapped around her finger. *** ~Soraya~ “Hi?What’s your name?”the fourteen-year-old Soraya greeted with a smile. She was attending Cedric Montclair’s birthday party.Upon seeing Calum, she immediately approached. Of course,Soraya already knew who he was.The Montclair and Azar families had lived across from each other for years. “Calum,”the young Montclair heir said.He shook his head like he already knew there was no need for introductions. “Can we be friends,Calum?”she asked. He just shrugged, and Soraya took it as an approval. There was a time when Soraya and Calum got along just fine.Their families were close, and being neighbors,Soraya saw his achievements and grew to admire Calum. Yes,Calum was a handsome man.He was tall and athletic, with brown hair and sharp blue eyes. But Soraya didn’t fall for just his looks. She loved the quiet strength he carried. He didn’t talk much, but when he did, people listened. He took over the family business at a young age,and even then,he acted with the seriousness of someone much older. Yet life had a way of turning everything upside down. One crucial night changed everything, forcing them into marriage. That was when Calum started hating Soraya. He firmly believed she had orchestrated the events leading up to her pregnancy. Soraya had hoped she could win Calum’s heart. After all,she was young, bright, and attractive. She had an angelic beauty, with long, brown hair that cascaded down her back and skin as fair as ivory. She did not have to wear heavy makeup or provocative clothes to stand out.Aside from her natural qualities,Calum’s parents adored her. However, throughout their marriage,Calum treated her with disdain. He ignored her,and the worst part was how he allowed his friends to look down on her.And now,he flaunted a mistress without even batting an eye. There was no other way to go around it.Soraya needed to choose herself,or else she would be the useless person Calum’s friends had labeled her to be. Soraya had been home this past few days, packing her things. One would think that, despite her absence, her husband would call or be concerned—but no.He never called or texted. Calum didn’t care. They did not celebrate their anniversary.Calum never came to her birthday celebrations, and unless the party was held at the Montclair mansion,Soraya was never invited to his birthday party. Neither had Sage replied to any of her messages, maybe too afraid she would ruin her birthday celebration. Soraya had already called her uncle. She was moving in with them in Beldridge, the next town. Her uncle had relocated a few years back.Only she remained to be with Sage. Just before leaving, she left the signed divorce papers with the maid. She told her,“Please give this to Calum. These are divorce papers that I have signed.Tell him I sent him a message. He hasn’t read it yet.” Belinda, the maid, who had long served them as Sage’s nanny, gulped. She said,“Are you sure,Mrs.Montclair?” “Look at me,Belinda. It’s my daughter’s birthday, but she didn’t even invite me,”Soraya forced a smile and said.“It’s for the best.” She hugged Belinda and said,“Thank you,Belinda, for everything.I now leave my daughter’s care in your hands.” “Mrs.Montclair,”Belinda wept.“I know where Sage’s birthday is being held.I wasn’t supposed to tell you. It’s at the Butter&Crumb Cafe.” Soraya nodded.“Thanks for telling me.I guess I could drop by and just look.I promise I won’t tell.” Her mother’s heart still couldn’t leave it alone. At least, she wanted to wish her daughter a happy birthday from a distance. So,she made her way to the Butter&Crumb Cafe. Soraya thought she was prepared for what she would see,but she was wrong. She was very wrong. *** “Happy Birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday, dear Sage.Happy birthday to you!” Soraya watched in secret behind a door as the scene unfolded. Balloons floated lazily in the breeze.Laughter danced like music across the cafe’s garden area. And in the center of it all was Sage,in someone else’s arms. Rose was carrying Sage while Calum clapped his hands. The crowd cheered as the trio blew out the candle on the giant fondant birthday cake. Sage did not even like fondant cake, but she looked happy. Around them were Calum’s social circle, his wealthy friends, and two of his cousins. “Sage, are you happy to celebrate your birthday with Rose?”Claire,Calum’s cousin, asked Sage. “Yes,of course!I love being with Aunt Rose!”Sage said, wrapping her arms around Rose with a beaming smile.“Even my classmates like Aunt Rose.” “We are happy for you,Sage!”someone said. “We are happy for all of you!”Calum’s cousin raised a glass, referring to Sage,Rose, and Calum. From where Soraya stood, she overheard everything. Soraya, yet again, questioned her life choices and the sacrifices she had made for her family.‘Was it worth it?’ Right now,it did not feel like it. What further added to Soraya’s resentment was how Rose was warmly welcomed by Calum’s friends. Never had Calum brought Soraya to any of his friends’gatherings. However,it was so much easier to flaunt Rose in front of them. Soraya felt the ache again,so much that she rested her hand on her chest. After witnessing enough emotional torture, she turned on her heels, but as she did,she bumped into a tall, overbearing man on the street. “What are you doing here?Don’t cause any trouble. It’s Sage’s birthday!”he warned. This man was Jacob Steel, one of Calum’s friends,a high-profile businessman in Belridge, the neighboring town.Like Calum,Jacob had that icy charisma and the unmistakable air of affluence. Hearing Jacob’s remark,Soraya retorted,“Cause trouble?Me?Why would you think that,Mr.Steel?I willingly agreed not to be invited to my own daughter’s birthday. As a mother,I just wanted to see her.Is it a crime?” She could tell Jacob was stunned by Soraya’s reply. “I know.I know. You think I’m the evil one here? But,do you really think I wanted this?”Soraya snapped. She couldn’t help it.All of Calum’s friends had judged her the moment she got pregnant with Sage.“I’m still twenty-six.I got married at nineteen and threw away my life and career for Calum and Sage!” “You all judged me,but you never really tried finding out the truth.”Soraya’s jaws clenched.“Fine,though.Let me be the bad person! It doesn’t matter.I don’t care anymore.” She turned her back on Jacob and marched toward her car.In the car,she called her Uncle Philip.“Uncle.I’m leaving for Beldrige.See you in two hours or less.” “And…Soraya, what about Sage?”her uncle asked. Soraya thought about it and said,“Sage…she—she doesn’t need me anymore.” Chapter 4:Resigned ~Soraya~ On a Monday,Soraya drove back to Cedar Heights early in the morning. It was an hour-and-a-half drive. She was already four blocks away when she noticed Calum’s car! Yet again, she sensed her heart racing. She had to pull over and calm her emotions. With her eyes closed, she muttered,“Twenty, nineteen, eighteen, seventeen…one.” As her eyes slowly opened, she spotted Calum’s vehicle parked two cars down.Moments later,Calum stepped out and opened the passenger door, letting Rose Becket exit with a bright smile. Soraya looked away, realizing that Calum and Rose were together as early as seven. It could only mean they had slept together.Worse, maybe he had brought Rose to their marital home. Her chest tightened again,so much that counting numbers no longer worked. Soraya hugged herself and muttered her newfound mantra,“Control,Soraya, control.Feelings pass.Feelings pass.Control.” It took a while, but when Soraya had finally regained her composure, she realized Calum had brought Rose to her boutique. Soraya didn’t know Calum had a romantic side. She supposed he never really cared for her at all. A bitter smile tugged at Soraya’s lips. She let the truth sink in deeper, letting her anger sharpen her resolve. This low point was only temporary;her comeback was already coming. After Calum left Rose’s shop,Soraya waited five minutes before driving to Aegis Core Systems. Aegis Core Systems was a top-tier cybersecurity firm known for its enterprise-grade protection. It had built a multi-million-dollar empire by supplying advanced security solutions to major corporations. Its most profitable system was the NeuroSentinel. Soraya parked her car and went straight to the upper ground floor.Approaching the front desk,Soraya said,“Excuse me.My name is Soraya Azar.I want to claim my profit share for the past four years.” “Do you have a licensing profit share,Miss?”the front desk asked with a smile. “Yes,”Soraya replied. The lady called the person in charge, and after confirming that Soraya was,in fact,a developer of one of their programs, she gave her an ID pass. Soraya easily found her way to the finance department. The person in charge gave her a big smile. He looked tense as he offered his hand,“Miss Azar,it’s such an honor to meet you!And my,you are so young and beautiful!” “I’m sorry.I never expected you to be this young, but then again, most geniuses are young.”The man motioned to a seat and said,“Please, have some coffee or tea.” “Thank you for the compliment.”Soraya’s heart was still like a block of ice,but she forced a smile.“Water is fine.Is the check ready?I called last Thursday to make the withdrawal.” “Yes,it’s ready.I prepared the check.I was very excited to meet you,”the man said.“My name is Albert Smith.I am the accounts payable manager.I started working here two years ago and heard so much about you from Mr.Ward.” Soraya could not help but smile at the mention of her old friend,Silas Ward. Her heart softened a little. She asked,“I’d really like to see Silas. Is he here at the moment?” “Mr.Ward is on a business trip.He has been a busy man, following our expansion to the capital. After all,he is now the big boss,”Albert remarked, chuckling. “The big boss?”Soraya asked, bemused. “You don’t know?”Albert asked.“Mr.Ward is now the CEO of Aegis Core Systems. He had his appointment last month. After your collaborative effort with Mr.Ward,he quickly rose from a Tech Engineer to a project manager,VP,and now,the boss.” “I believe he used his profit share to buy company shares of Aegis Core Systems,”Albert reported. Soraya’s mouth fell open in disbelief. Her dear old friend had made it big! And then it hit her like a slap:if she hadn’t abandoned her career at Aegis Core Systems, she could have been standing beside Silas by now. Yes,this was her first workplace after completing her Computer Engineering degree at Cedar Heights Institute of Technology. Soraya had a unique way of learning and processing numbers. She was so good at it that she managed to skip grade levels and finished college when she was eighteen. After graduation, her internship company,Aegis Core Systems, immediately offered her a job,and she began working under the mentorship of Silas Ward. Because of her busy schedule, taking care of Sage while working hard for Calum,Soraya had not been in touch with Silas. She wasn’t the type to have a social media account either. In the middle of everything,Soraya had lost her old phone, leaving her with no way to contact Silas. “I am happy for Silas,”Soraya said. Then, she wrote her number on a piece of paper, handing it to Albert.“Do you mind telling him that I came to see him? Here’s my number.I changed contact information three years ago.” “Certainly,Miss Azar. When he returns,I shall give him your number.”Albert put her contact information inside his drawer. Then,he said,“Excuse me for a moment.I just need to get the acknowledgement paper for your check.” Albert came back with the document, which Soraya quickly signed. Then,Albert passed her the check, shocking Soraya to the core.“I earned six million dollars in four years?” That was ten times more than what she had expected. It was primarily the reason why she took so long to withdraw her profit share.Soraya was saving it for rainy days. Then, the gut punch. “Miss Azar,”Albert said.“You would have earned ten times more if you hadn’t given up your exclusive rights as the co-developer of NeuroSentinel.” *** ~Calum~ Meanwhile, back at the Montclair Group,Calum,Soraya’s soon-to-be ex-husband,was reviewing documents on his desk when his assistant walked in.He called his assistant and asked,“Is Soraya back?Tell her to stop her theatrics and work on the East Project.” Greg Foster,Calum’s assistant, gulped. In the office, only he knew Soraya was his wife.“Sir,your wife called me last week and said she was resigning effective immediately.Miss Azar said, she informed you.” Calum stilled. His eyes landed on the brown envelope Belinda gave him before leaving the house that day.He still hadn’t opened it yet,and he still hadn’t read Soraya’s messages. Calum thought Soraya was still throwing a tantrum, but when he read her text, his brows knitted. He…couldn’t believe it. Chapter 5:Divorce ~Calum~ Calum’s striking features tightened subtly. His brows pulled together, creating a slight furrow between his usually composed eyes.He was a man who never second-guessed himself, but at that moment,he hesitated. Slowly,he read Soraya’s text. [Calum, Let’s end this, once and for all. First,I am formally resigning. Please allow me to leave the company immediately and without complication.I’ve dedicated the past four years to serving you, often without pause. There is no longer any reason for me to remain.I’m sure you’d prefer my absence. Second, the matter of our divorce.I am not seeking anything from you.I only want my freedom. This will also allow you the freedom to be with Rose openly and without restraint.I have not informed your parents of my decision.I trust you will handle that appropriately. Third, about Sage.I won’t fight for custody. Please tell her that I love her deeply and always will.I won’t be seeing her for now.I need time to remove myself from everything. In truth,I believe she would rather stay with Rose than with me. Lastly, there’s no need for further contact between us.Below is the contact information for my lawyer. Please have your legal team coordinate directly with them to finalize the divorce proceedings. I trust you will see this through swiftly. –Soraya] Inside the brown envelope Belinda had given him,Calum pulled out a divorce agreement. He confirmed that Soraya had,in fact, asked for nothing. He sucked in a deep breath and leaned back in his seat. Just as he stared at the last page, where Soraya’s signature had been affixed, someone knocked on his office door. One of his good friends walked in—Melvin Carter. “Calum,I really need to talk to you about my investments,”Melvin said before finding his seat. Like Calum,Melvin was a businessman. His family owned several gas stations in Cedar Heights and Belridge. Seeing Calum seriously holding on to a set of documents,Melvin asked,“What’s that you are reading?” “Soraya asked for a divorce,”Calum revealed. “Pfft!”Melvin leaned back, laughing.“What a joke.We all know she would never divorce you. She’s banking on the fact that she has the support of your parents!” “She was the one who drafted this divorce letter,”Calum revealed.“She…even tendered an immediate resignation.” Melvin grabbed the divorce agreement and noted,“She doesn’t want anything?”He shook his head, saying,“I don’t believe it.Trust me,Calum. She is just doing this to get your attention.Give it a few days, and you’ll see, she’ll come running back here.” “She hasn’t been home for a week,”Calum pointed out. “After she found out she wasn’t invited to Sage’s birthday?”Melvin asked. He hissed and added,“I guess she is mad.She has a right to be,though, but I get it.Sage wanted Rose to be there, and Soraya would never want to be around Rose.” “Right,”Calum acknowledged. “You know what?Since she signed it,you had better file it immediately before she changes her mind—like,do it now!”Melvin suggested.“This is your chance to finally get rid of her.Isn’t that what you have always wanted?” “Hmmm,”Calum reacted, his hand retaking the divorce agreement.“It is.” He took a pen and was about to sign it when he stopped. His brows met again.“No,I should give her alimony.” “What? Why?She forced her way into this relationship, remember?”Melvin suggested. “She gave me Sage, and she took care of our daughter for six years.Another thing,if my parents ever find out that Soraya is leaving with nothing,we will have another argument,”Calum reasoned. “Well, you have a point.Besides, she’d probably need a lot of money after relinquishing the title of Mrs.Montclair.God knows what kind of work she can do,”Melvin remarked.“Didn’t she simply assist Greg?” “You’re a talented man,Calum. You need someone who matches your skill level, someone like Rose,”Melvin suggested. Calum merely nodded. He called his lawyer and made several arrangements. In the evening,Calum returned home, finding his daughter,Sage, eating a piece of cake from her birthday the other night. “Daddy, this cake isn’t as yummy as Mommy’s cake,”Sage complained. Then,Sage looked behind him, asking,“Is…Is Mommy back?” “No,”Calum replied plainly.“Your mommy may not come to see you for a while, but she told me to remind you that she will always love you.Is that okay?” “Gone for a while?”Sage looked up.“How long?” “I don’t know. For a while,”Calum replied, unsure himself. Sage frowned.Just when Calum thought his daughter was hurt,Sage asked with a smile,“Then, can I invite Aunt Rose?” “You like your Aunt Rose to visit you here?”Calum asked. “Yes,and we can spend time together—like dinner or play in the backyard!”Sage suggested.“I like it when you take me out with Aunt Rose. She buys me a lot of gifts and that means you’ll be here too!” She made a face and suggested,“Because you don’t usually go with me and Mommy.Since Mommy won’t be here for a while,I’d like to spend time with Aunt Rose.” “I see. Then,I’ll tell her.Rose would love to spend more time with you,”Calum said before pinching Sage’s cheek. Calum walked up to the master bedroom after speaking with Sage.He was about to take a shower when he realized his phone had several messages. In a group chat that included his circle of friends,he received many words of encouragement and some advice. Melvin:[Ladies and gentlemen, let’s have dinner tomorrow.Let’s celebrate Calum’s upcoming divorce!] Roger:[What? No way.Soraya practically dedicates her life to Calum. She’ll never leave Calum.] Roger:[I bet it’s just an act.] Melvin:[I thought so too,but she did give Calum a divorce agreement. She signed it.] Jacob:[She asked for a divorce?] Roger:[If that’s the case, congratulations,Calum!] Claire:[Oh,wow!I hope this is for real!Congratulations,Calum!I hate to say this, but Soraya was just too pathetic. She used Sage to keep you for a very long time.] Claire:[ Rose, this is it!Soon, you’ll be Mrs.Montclair.] Melvin:[Rooting for you, Rose and Calum. To new beginnings.] Rose:[You guys.Let’s not be selfish here.We also need to consider Sage’s feelings.] Rose:[ Calum. You know I never pressured you into anything.Think this through properly.Take as much time as you need.] Claire:[You are too considerate,Rose. That’s why you’ll be better suited for my cousin,Calum.] Jacob:[Calum, you need to be sure about this.Sage will need her mother.] Melvin:[What’s wrong with you,Jacob?Don’t you remember how Soraya used such vile methods to force Calum into marriage?] Claire:[Yeah, there was never a relationship between Calum and Soraya. She’s like a surrogate,if anything!] Roger:[Rose can be Sage’s mother.Remember the party?Sage preferred to be with Rose rather than Soraya!] Jacob:[No one can ever replace a mother.] Calum frowned in disbelief.Jacob Steel, usually the most detached and ruthless among them, was taking Soraya’s side?Among his friends,he despised Soraya the most. What had changed? *** What Calum didn’t know was that Jacob had seen Soraya that night. And whatever passed between them…left Jacob questioning everything he thought he knew about her. Chapter 6:Jacob Steel ~Soraya~ Soraya was busy the whole day. After visiting Aegis Core System, she went to the bank to make a deposit and then viewed apartment options. Since she hadn’t yet met with her friend Silas,Soraya remained uncertain about settling in Cedar Heights.Another option was to stay in Belridge momentarily and help restore her uncle’s company to its former glory. As Soraya drove back to her uncle’s house, she passed by a park.Something caught her eye, prompting her to pull over and walk out. She was about to enter the park when she noticed a young girl, looking like she was about four or five, running across the street on her own! Soraya gasped;her motherly instinct kicked in. She noticed a black sedan struggling to avoid the girl.Soraya ran, grabbed the little girl, and rolled to the side of the road. She did not care that she had ruined her coat. Her arms protectively wrapped around the little girl. People crowded around her as Soraya remained on the concrete. “Are you okay,Miss?” “How is the child?” The driver of the black sedan ran to them, saying,“I’m so sorry. She came out of nowhere.I wasn’t sure if stepping on the brakes abruptly was fast enough or—” “It’s okay,we understand,”one man said.“The girl did run too fast into traffic.” “Angela!Angela!”a man’s concerned voice echoed in the air. Everybody figured it was the father or the child’s guardian. Someone had helped Soraya up.Just then, the young girl looked at Soraya with guilt. She appeared teary-eyed and nervous. She sniffed before hugging Soraya back, her little arms wrapping around her neck. “It’s okay. You are fine. You are safe with me,”Soraya assured the child. “Angela!Thank God,you are okay!”the unknown man said behind Soraya. “Mister, you should watch over your daughter carefully. She almost got hit by a car!”someone said. “I’m so sorry, everyone,”the man said, his deep voice laced with a touch of panic. When Soraya finally turned to the man behind the voice, her breath hitched.‘No way!Of all the people!’ It was Jacob Steel. Of course,it was him!Calum’s arrogant,judgmental,steel-faced friend who ironically always looked like he’d stepped out of a luxury magazine ad. His usually pristine trench coat was wrinkled as if he’d run through a storm. His dark hair, always perfectly combed, now fell over his forehead. And his eyes, sharper than she remembered, reflected fear. The sight of him made Soraya pause. The polished, untouchable billionaire,Jacob Steel, suddenly looked human:he was out of breath, messy, and clearly worried. It felt strange. The last time Soraya saw him,he wasn’t exactly kind. Her eyebrows pulled together as the memory came back.Still, when she looked at the little girl clinging to her like a koala,Soraya couldn’t bring herself to pull away. “Soraya,”Jacob spoke first. “Mr.Steel,”Soraya acknowledged. ‘Right,’Soraya remembered.‘Jacob lived in Belridge. This was his town.’ “Is she—”she hesitated before resuming,“your daughter?” “Yes,”Jacob responded. His voice, deep as ever, was slightly ragged from running, but there was something raw in it too.Maybe guilt.Maybe panic.Maybe both. He stretched his arms toward the girl, his eyes clearly inspecting if she had been hurt during the fall. Angela turned to Jacob, silently admitting their kinship, but still, she refused to let go of Soraya. “Angela, come here, let’s not bother Soraya.”Jacob tried to pull Angela away, but the little girl sure was strong. Angela’s actions reminded Soraya of the times when Sage was younger.Soraya’s daughter was the same:possessive of her. When Sage was two years old,Soraya could barely go to the bathroom at night because her daughter did not want to leave her side. While that was happening, the crowd around them had dispersed. The driver from earlier had also left the scene. “Angela,it’s time for dinner.Didn’t you want to eat at your favorite restaurant?Your ice cream is waiting,”Jacob said, pointing to the establishment across the street. ‘Oh,so that’s what happened,’Soraya mused. She tried to help Jacob out by turning to the girl.“Aren’t you hungry?Don’t you want ice cream,Angela?” Only then did the little girl pull away slightly and give Soraya a nod. “Then why don’t you go with your…daddy?”Soraya suggested. She forced a smile, adding,“Get some food and ice cream?” The little girl looked at Soraya with puppy eyes. Then,Angela cupped Soraya’s face and turned her head to the park. She did this twice before Soraya realized Angela wanted to look at the lights display in the park, the same wonder that made her pull over to admire. Soraya couldn’t help but smile. She turned to Angela, asking,“Do you like lights?” Angela nodded. She did not say a word but simply pointed to the light display. “Do you want to go there?”Soraya asked, and the little girl nodded. “Angela, let me take you instead,”Jacob said. This time,he sounded like a scolding father. However,no matter what he did,Angela refused to remove herself from Soraya, and again, she proved to be very strong.Angela used all her limbs to wrap herself around Soraya. “Angela!”This time,Jacob was mad. “You know what? It’s okay,”Soraya said. She smiled again and gazed at the light display. She said to Angela,“Do you want me to go with you there?” Angela finally smiled and nodded.Again, she did not speak and pointed to the beautiful lights. Left with no choice,Jacob followed Soraya and Angela to the park. From the corner of Soraya’s eye,she noticed Mr.Steel signaling what looked like his bodyguard or driver to stay behind. Minutes later, they stood before a mounted LED screen flashing with colorful lights. Angela smiled, her eyes fixed on the lights before her. “Angela likes lights, among other things,”Jacob explained. Soraya did not turn to Jacob.Instead, she focused on the LED screen. It was bright and colorful.A huge toy robot lit up with dancing lights. The lights moved in patterns, spinning, flashing, and changing colors. Most people watched for fun,but Soraya saw more. She observed closely, her eyes following each flash.A slow smile formed on her lips. ‘The colors change every two seconds...It flashes in a loop...That part repeats every five steps...Oh,they used a spiral pattern.Nice,’she remarked silently. Her brain was already breaking it down like a puzzle. She could guess the timing, the rhythm, and the pattern without anyone telling her.It made her feel calm,as if the lights spoke a quiet language only she could hear. In all the noise around her, this made sense.Numbers made sense.Patterns were safe. For a moment,Soraya forgot everything else:Calum,Sage, her parents, her pain. She just felt like herself again. “Angela is an Aspie,”Jacob said.“She’s fixated on fast-moving lights and patterns.” Soraya’s smile brightened, and her gaze shifted to Angela, who was still looking at the LED screen. She responded to Jacob,“I had a feeling. The way she communicated through gestures reminded me of how I used to be.” Turning to Jacob, she admitted,“I should know.I also have Asperger’s Syndrome.” The revelation made Jacob frown. She assumed he thought ill of her again,as usual.Soraya scoffed and said,“If you don’t believe me,I don’t care.I’m not trying to win your sympathy.I—I just feel for your daughter,Mr.Steel.” Just then,Angela turned to Soraya with a bright smile. She opened her mouth, hesitated, then tried again. Finally, she said,“M...M...Mommy.” Hearing that,Soraya’s heart leaped, her eyebrows raising.‘What?’ On the other hand,Jacob froze, his eyes locked on Angela. The sudden silence stretched between them, heavy and charged. Then his voice broke through, filled with shock.“Angela...you spoke?” If it wasn’t enough to make Soraya panic,Angela further tightened her hold, saying,“Can you be my Mommy?” Soraya nearly choked on her spew. She wished she could bury herself under the ground, right that very moment. ================================ Open the app and continue reading the rest ofthe story .👉(lt will automatically jump to thebook when you open the app)

😭 He put me through IVF for a baby that was never real. He put an IUD in me without consent so I couldn't get pregnant—while his mistress carried his son. 💔 He whipped me in front of his family. Left me tied to a tree. When she faked her kidnapping, he chose her. Watched me almost fall. 🔥 I'm done. Let him keep his mistress. I'm taking his legacy. He'll wake up to nothing but the truth I left behind. ------------------------------------------------- It was our fifth wedding anniversary when I discovered it—my husband, Kyson Lazenberg, was cheating on me. That day, we had agreed to celebrate at the most expensive restaurant in the city. But on the way there, with my four-month pregnancy, I got into a car accident. Blood poured out of me like a river. When I was rushed to the hospital, I grabbed the doctor’s hand and begged him desperately. “Please… please save my baby. He’s only four months old…” But the doctor’s expression turned grave. “Ma’am, there’s no child in your womb. Please, you need to calm down!” I froze, disbelief crashing over me. My hands trembled as I dialed Kyson’s number. The call connected, but before I could say a word, his voice lashed out like a whip. “Ever since you got pregnant, you’ve become unbearably clingy. Can’t you learn to be a little more independent?” And with that, he hung up. I stared at the phone in shock. No matter how many times I called back, the line didn’t go through again. Clenching my jaw against the pain, I forced myself to sit up and sign the surgical consent form. Just before they wheeled me into the operating room, I opened my phone. And my world shattered all over again. On Facebook, I saw two photos from the daughter of my husband’s mentor. The first was a photo of her hand interlocked with a man’s. The second photo was a pregnancy report. Her caption read: [Thank you for coming into my life… and for giving me an angel to protect.] The man in that picture was none other than my husband, who had left me just before the crash! As if that wasn’t enough, a message from his mistress popped up on the screen. [It’s such a shame to give my little angel to you. After all, you’re just a woman faking pregnancy. Your husband has always been by my side. Isn’t it time you divorce him?] The words cut through me like glass lodged in my throat. My hands trembled as I typed a single message to my father. [Dad, I’m ready to come home… and to destroy the Lazenbergs.] If my marriage with Kyson had been a lie from the very beginning, then I would make sure that liar paid the price! 1 Geena’s POV I hadn’t even calmed down when a syringe of anesthesia was plunged straight into my vein. Through the haze of drowsiness, I saw Kyson walk in. His face was cold, his gaze sharp as he looked at my half-conscious state. Without the slightest hesitation, he ordered the doctor, “Arrange for her to have an IUD surgery. When she wakes up, tell her the baby is still there.” The doctor frowned deeply at his words. “Sir, your wife has just been in a car accident. I don’t know why you’re lying to her about being pregnant, but right now, her body absolutely cannot undergo an IUD surgery.” On the phone, Kyson’s voice remained like ice. “Think about your child. Put away your misplaced sympathy, Doctor. Even without a baby, Geena will still be my wife. But my mentor doesn’t have time to wait any longer.” He paused, then added with cruel clarity, “Madz is already carrying my child. I have to take responsibility for her. Geena must not get pregnant during this time.” “But…” The doctor tried to argue, only to be cut off mercilessly. “No buts. Do as I say.” With that, he hung up without the slightest hesitation. The doctor stood rooted to the spot, silent for a long while. Finally, gritting his teeth, he pushed me toward the operating room. The anesthesia began to take full effect, blurring my vision. Just before I slipped into unconsciousness, a memory surged back. Half a year ago, after visiting his gravely ill mentor, Kyson had returned home unusually silent. After my repeated questions, he sighed and finally confessed. “Geena, Mr. Pankey doesn’t have much time left. His dying wish is for Madz to have a child.” I hadn’t even processed what he meant before he spilled everything in one breath. “Madz said she can’t find another man, so she came to me. My mentor showed me great kindness back then. I can’t refuse him.” My face turned pale as the truth sank in. “You want to have a child with Madz? Fine. Then we can divorce.” Even though my heart felt like it was being ripped apart, I said it firmly. Alarmed, Kyson quickly tried to explain. “Geena, you misunderstand. It’s only through IVF. I won’t have a physical relationship with Madz. Mr. Pankey is on his deathbed. His greatest wish is to see her with a child of her own. Can you really bear to let him leave with regret?” I stared at his self-righteous face, exhausted, and closed my eyes. “No, Kyson. I don’t agree. Don’t you see how absurd this is? If Madz wants a child, she can go through IVF herself—or find another way. Why does it have to be you? We don’t even have children of our own, and yet you want to give her one first? “I can’t accept this. If you insist, then we should divorce.” I turned to leave, but he rushed to block me, pulling me tightly into his arms. “No! I don’t want us to divorce. I won’t have a child with Madz. Geena, I was wrong. Please, don’t go.” His desperate apologies broke down my defenses, and in the end, I forgave him. Now, lying here, I finally understood—perhaps back then, Kyson had already been testing me. After that, he made a child with Madz behind my back. The thought tore me apart. Tears slipped from the corners of my eyes as the doctor let out a helpless sigh. Then, darkness swallowed me whole. When I woke up, my hand instinctively went to my belly. Under my fingertips was a jagged, uneven scar. The IUD surgery had been done. A strangled sob tore out of my throat. I cried until I was empty, and when I finally calmed, I picked up my phone and no longer hesitated. “Dad,” I said hoarsely, “I’ve decided. I’ll return to take over the family Company, and I’ll find the right person to bear its heir.” On the other end, Dad’s voice carried a rare smile of satisfaction. “Good. I’ll give you seven days to settle things here. Kyson is not a man worthy of you. Returning to inherit the company is your wisest choice. My daughter, Geena, was never meant to be blinded by love.” Remembering everything Kyson had done to me, I gripped the phone so tightly my knuckles turned pale. My voice trembled but was sharp with resolve. “I’ll bring all of Lazenberg Corporation’s documents back with me. Then, within six months, I’ll devour it completely.” Kyson had lied to me. He had done something unforgivable. Not only could I never forgive him. I also wanted to drag him and Madz straight to hell by myself! On the other end of the line, Dad’s praise rang with pride. He even promised that once I returned, all of Crutchfield Company’s shares would be transferred under my name. “Alright, Dad. I’ll see you in seven days.” After saying that, I was about to hang up when a voice suddenly spoke from behind me. “Honey? Who are you meeting in seven days?” Chapter Two 2 Geena’s POV Kyson looked at me with doubt in his eyes, but deep inside, I caught a flicker of panic. I didn’t answer him directly. Instead, I asked in a calm voice, “When I was in surgery, where did you go? And why did you sound so irritable when I called you?” My questions made his face instantly darken with guilt. He pulled me into his arms, holding my shoulders as if they were fragile. His voice was choked with emotion. “I’m sorry, honey. Something happened at the company, and I couldn’t control my emotions. Please forgive me.” He gently took my hand, his eyes brimming with a love that seemed ready to spill over. “I never expected you would be in danger. Thank God our child is safe… Otherwise, I would’ve rather left this world with the both of you.” As he spoke, teardrops slid down, landing on me. In the past, my heart would have ached unbearably at the sight. No matter what had happened, I would’ve forgiven him. But now, I only stared back with a blank expression. “Kyson,” I said slowly, “do you still remember our prenuptial agreement?” He clearly hadn’t expected that question. His eyes steadied, and he replied with gentle assurance, “Of course, honey, I remember. Don’t worry. I would never betray you. You and our child… Neither you nor the child will ever leave me.” As he spoke, his hand drifted softly to my belly, his lips curving in a smile. I shifted ever so slightly, avoiding his touch. The pause in his movements told me he noticed. His brows furrowed. “Honey… what’s wrong?” I hadn’t even decided how to brush him off when his phone rang. His expression tensed. Without hesitation, he declined the call. But within moments, the phone buzzed again and again. Though he tried to hide it, I caught a clear glimpse of the caller’s name. [Madz] But I didn’t confront him. I only watched him, cold and silent, as he continued his little performance in front of me. The calls kept coming, one after another. In the end, his expression shifted into visible worry. “Honey,” he said carefully, “it might be something urgent at the company. I should check on it. Would that be alright?” I nodded, calm and unbothered. In the next instant, he bolted like an arrow loosed from its string. Once his figure disappeared completely, I tidied myself up and followed after him. On the way, I counted—he ran through ten red lights in his rush to get there. Whatever Madz had said on the phone, it had shaken him completely. When we finally arrived, I watched as he jumped out of the car and hurried straight into an apartment building, moving like he knew the place by heart. I trailed close behind. The next moment, a pair of delicate hands reached out from the open doorway, curling around his neck. “Kyson! Finally, you’re here. My belly… It hurts so much…” Madz’s voice dripped with false sweetness. Her red lips smeared kisses all over his face, leaving behind countless marks. Hearing her words, Kyson panicked. “What’s wrong? Did Victor act up again? Let me see.” At that name, my heart clenched. Victor… That was the very name Kyson once whispered to me in our most intimate moments, saying he hoped our child would grow up with great ambition. “V” was the nickname he had chosen. But now I realized—it was never meant for our child at all. It was for theirs. After a quick check, he found nothing wrong with her, yet he still pulled her along. “Come on, let’s go to the hospital.” But Madz’s hand slipped inside his shirt, her tone dripping with seduction. “Kyson, as long as you’re here, I feel fine. Ever since I got pregnant with Victor, you haven’t touched me at all… Don’t you… want me?” Her sultry voice lingered in the air, lips brushing against his ear. Having been with him for years, I recognized instantly the moment he lost control. He pulled her close, his voice low and hoarse. “Don’t mess around. Right now, Victor comes first. But once you’ve given birth, I’ll make sure you’re satisfied.” As he spoke, he thr^st his h1ps ag@inst her, making her gasp and mo@n. Watching them tangled together, my nails dug deep into my palms. Then, suddenly, a tap landed on my shoulder. Startled, I spun around, only to see an old woman standing there. She winked at me, whispering, “That young couple moved in two years ago. Every night, they go at it so loud the whole building blushes from it.” She chuckled, adding, “Well, young people are full of energy, and their married life is really good. Ever since his wife got pregnant, though, we haven’t heard those noises anymore.” Just like that, everything clicked. Kyson and Madz had been entangled long before this! The so-called IVF was nothing but a lie! God knows how many times they had already been together behind my back! Madz tugged on Kyson’s arm, trying to pull him inside. But then she froze, as if a thought had struck her. Her voice faltered. “Kyson… What if Geena finds out the truth? What if she realizes she was never pregnant at all, that everything was fabricated by you? Wouldn’t she lose her mind? If it were just me, I could bear it… but Dad’s health isn’t good. If something happens…” She trailed off, fear flashing in her eyes as she clung to him tightly. Kyson wrapped her firmly in his arms, his tone cruel yet reassuring. “Don’t worry. Geena will never know. I already arranged a uterine implant surgery for her. If she had agreed to do IVF with us in the first place, none of this would’ve happened. This is her own doing. And if she dares to lay a finger on you, I won’t let her off.” Hearing my name in his mouth, laced with such malice, I realized I had never truly seen this man for who he was. He lied to me. He betrayed me. And now he wanted to harm me. But no one could hurt me and walk away unscathed! I swore—Kyson would pay the price! With that promise, my gaze hardened with resolve. Chapter Three 3 Geena’s POV When I got home, I did two things. First, I took out the prenuptial agreement Kyson had signed before our marriage. It clearly stated that if he ever cheated, our marriage would be nullified, and he would walk away with nothing. Of course, I knew that him leaving with nothing was unrealistic. But with this agreement, plus the evidence of his affair, I could at least secure the majority of the assets. That would be my first act of revenge against Kyson. The second thing I did was erase every trace of the love we once shared. The wedding photos—I cut them up. The little ceramic figurines we made together—I smashed them. The preserved flower he had crafted by hand—I snapped it in half and tossed it into the fire. As for all the luxury gifts he had given me, I listed every last one of them on a resale site. By the time I was done clearing everything out, Kyson finally returned to the villa. When he saw me sitting calmly on the couch, his brows knit together. Then, with the heavy scent of perfume clinging to him, he stepped closer. “Honey, why are you home so soon? Didn’t the doctor say you needed to stay longer at the hospital?” he asked. I quietly raised the book in my hand, placing it between us like a barrier. “Resting at home is better for me,” I replied flatly. He frowned again and reached out, trying to touch my face. But I turned away. For a moment, he froze. Then he sighed, speaking softly, “Geena, you’ve been so cold these past two days. Are you still upset about the accident? I’m sorry.” He was coaxing me the same way he always did whenever we quarreled. But this time, my heart felt nothing. “Your perfume is too strong. I don’t like it,” I said evenly. His gaze darkened. He lowered his head slightly, realizing the scent was indeed overpowering. A moment later, he softened his voice. “I’m sorry, honey. You know how business dinners are—these things can’t be avoided. I just sat too close to someone, that’s all. Look, I’ll shower right away. But before that, I brought you a necklace and some stuff for our little V.” He beamed as he lifted a few baby items, all top designer brands. Then he handed me a necklace. Unlike the baby supplies, the necklace looked strikingly cheap. One glance, and I recognized it as a complimentary gift from a luxury brand. He really didn’t need to make it so obvious. It wasn’t hard to guess whose idea this little trick was. I set the necklace aside carelessly, showing no anger. Then I opened my Facebook feed. And sure enough, there it was. Madz’s new post was a photo of an expensive designer necklace. [Someone gave me this necklace. I really love it. It’s just a shame he took the complimentary one away. Oh well. I guess some people are only fit for freebies.] I let out a cold laugh and gave the post a like. Not long after, that bitch deleted it. Kyson, oblivious to the silent duel between his wife and his other woman, busied himself with his things before heading to the bathroom. I simply stared at the back of his neck, where a lipstick-stained kiss mark was still clearly visible—a blatant mark of his mistress’s provocation. That night, Kyson lit a candle beside my bed with practiced ease. As the fragrance drifted through the room, I suddenly saw an illusion—Madz standing smugly at his side, clinging to him with mockery in her eyes. In an instant, my stomach churned with nausea at the thought. Before discovering the truth, I never doubted the candle. I only thought pregnancy had blessed me with unusually good sleep. But now… I turned and slipped into the bathroom. When I came out again, I lay down quietly on the bed, pretending to drift into slumber. As expected, Kyson didn’t suspect a thing. The moment he saw me settle in, he grabbed his coat and slipped out of the bedroom in a rush. I opened my eyes the second his silhouette vanished and followed him silently. The route was all too familiar. Sure enough, we ended up at that same apartment. The door opened, and Madz rushed out eagerly, throwing her arms around him. “If only I could live closer to you…” she said sweetly. “That way you wouldn’t have to sneak out every night.” He pulled her into his arms, kissing her cheek again and again, his voice hoarse with desire. “I worry about you and the baby. In a few days, I’ll buy you a place near the villa. Then you can move in.” “But… what if Geena finds out?” she asked, feigning worry. But I caught the triumphant gleam in her eyes. “Don’t worry,” Kyson soothed, patting her head. “That candle she smells when she goes to bed was specially made by someone I hired. She’ll never know.” At that, Madz giggled and leaned closer. “The lingerie you like—I’m wearing it underneath. Tonight, I’ll make you very happy…” With that, she tugged playfully at his tie, dragging him inside. Soon, the apartment echoed with her moans and his ragged breaths. Just like the neighbor downstairs had told me—it was loud and unmistakable. So that was it. The candle he lit every night was nothing more than a smokescreen, a way to keep me asleep while he slipped out to cheat with her! And now, he even planned to move her nearby for convenience! I clenched my teeth so hard my jaw ached, hatred boiling in my chest. After saving the photos and recordings I had just captured, I turned back toward the villa. When the day came for me to leave, I would gather every shred of evidence—and deliver it all to Kyson as my big final “gift.” Chapter Four 4 Geena’s POV At dawn the next morning, Kyson slipped quietly back into the villa. I didn’t expose him. Instead, I lay still in bed, silently turning over in my mind what else I had left undone. When I woke up again, Kyson was already in the kitchen preparing breakfast. Since the day I married him, he had made breakfast for me with his own hands every single morning. That habit hadn’t changed, even now. “Honey,” he said cheerfully, setting a steaming bowl on the table, “I made your favorite soup today. Come try it while it’s warm.” His smiling face flashed before me. And suddenly, I recalled the words of that old woman I’d overheard yesterday. “The man from this apartment brings breakfast for his wife every morning before going to work. His wife must really be happy.” Looking at the breakfast in front of me, I finally understood everything. This so-called gesture of love had long ago been divided and shared—with his mistress. I pushed the bowl aside and instead twisted open a bottle of milk. A faint unease flickered in Kyson’s chest. “Honey, why aren’t you eating?” “I don’t have much of an appetite,” I replied casually, my tone light. “Probably just morning sickness.” I brushed him off, not wanting to talk more. He sensed something wasn’t right but didn’t press. His expression wavered with hesitation before he spoke again. “Honey, today’s the family gathering at the old estate. Come back with me.” I opened my mouth to refuse, but the resolute look in his eyes made me swallow my words. In the end, I simply lowered my gaze and nodded. His parents’ estate was bustling with unusual excitement that day. I hadn’t expected so many people to be present. Only when we entered the grand hall did I see her—Madz. She stood there brazenly, her baby bump on display, right at my mother-in-law’s side. The butler and maids treated her with a respect and affection that made it clear this wasn’t her first visit. When Lola saw me, she didn’t show even a flicker of guilt. Instead, she protectively pulled Madz behind her, as if shielding her from me—like I was the one who might cause harm. It turned out everyone already knew Madz was carrying Kyson’s child. And yet, they all hid the truth from me. My lips curled into a mocking smile as I met their eyes. That expression alone was enough to break Lola’s patience. Unable to openly acknowledge Madz’s presence, she vented her anger another way. “What a curse from the heavens,” she spat bitterly, “that our Kyson married such a woman. Five years of marriage and still no child—and now she can’t even greet her in-laws properly? No manners, no shame!” Kyson’s face tightened with frustration. “Mom! Don’t say that. Geena is pregnant now, isn’t she?” Lola let out a sharp laugh, her gaze stabbing toward my belly with scorn. “A sham like her could never give birth to anything worthy.” Kyson’s brows furrowed tightly. “Mom, that’s enough.” His voice carried warning. Only then did she fall silent, though her eyes glinted with venom when she saw him still defending me. Meanwhile, Madz had slipped to the edge of the gathering. Someone was pestering her, and when her eyes reddened, she cast a desperate look at Kyson. He couldn’t resist. Grabbing my arm hard, he shoved me down onto the couch, ignoring my struggles. “Geena, stay here. If anything happens to Madz in this house, it’ll stain my family’s reputation. I’m only doing this for my family’s sake.” Without waiting for my reply, he rushed to Madz’s side. Lola turned back to me, her tone dripping with contempt. “See? You can’t bear a child, and now you’ve proven you’re dim-witted, too. What a fool.” Satisfied with her insult, she swept away. The surrounding guests had noticed Kyson’s actions and began whispering. “Kyson always protects his wife—who’d dare harass her? That man must be blind to flirt with his wife of all people.” The man’s companion shot me a cautious glance and corrected his friend softly. “You’ve got it wrong. That’s not his wife. His wife is the one sitting on the couch over there.” The two exchanged a meaningful look before moving away. It was then that Madz approached me directly. With a smug smile, she pointed at her belly. “Do you know whose child this is? Of course, you do. You saw it yourself that day.” A laugh burst from my lips, sharp and cold. “Oh, Madz, you’re just a mistress—and yet you dare flaunt yourself before me? Aren’t you afraid I’ll drag you down with me and make you taste the pain I’ve suffered?” As I spoke, I thrust my hands forward as if to push her. I hadn’t even touched her when her face paled, her eyes blazing with spite. In the next second, she collapsed to the floor, tears brimming as she wailed. “Geena! What are you doing?” Kyson rushed over, shoving me aside and carefully lifting Madz into his arms. He looked at me with utter disappointment. “Geena, you’ve really let me down.” Tears streaked down Madz’s cheeks as she shook her head. “Kyson, don’t… Don’t blame her. She only acted out of jealousy because you stood up for me earlier. As long as the baby’s safe, I don’t mind.” That manipulative bitch even gasped in pain and clutched her belly. Disgust churned inside me as I watched their little performance. I raised my hand and slapped Madz hard across the face. “Drop the act! If I’d really pushed you, you’d already be in the hospital by now. And you wouldn’t have the chance to put on a show here!” Kyson hadn’t expected me to do it. In an instant, fury erupted in his eyes. “Geena! You’ve gone too far. I have to teach you a lesson.” He stood abruptly, signaling for the bodyguards to seize me. Just then, his mother appeared again. When she saw Madz clinging to her belly, Lola’s fury exploded. “She’s right! That wretch needs to be taught a lesson. Bring out the family law!” Panic flashed through Kyson’s gaze. He instinctively moved to shield me—but Madz tugged at his sleeve, anchoring him. At last, he shut his eyes tight, and when he spoke again, his voice was heavy with conflicted emotion. “Geena, Mom’s right. You need to be disciplined.” I fought desperately, but still they bound me and hung me from the great tree in front of the estate. Guests who hadn’t yet left watched me with curious, uneasy eyes. Kyson ignored them all, staring at me coldly. “Geena, apologize to Madz now, and you’ll be spared some lashes.” I glared back at him, my eyes burning with fury. “I told you, Kyson, it wasn't me! You could check the security cameras if you cared to!” For a brief moment, his eyes wavered. But when he glanced toward Madz, who was being tended to nearby, his resolve hardened. And just like that, he gave the signal. The first lash split open my back, fire searing through flesh. I clenched my teeth, refusing to utter a sound, refusing to confess no matter how many times he demanded it. Each strike grew heavier, more merciless. In the end, my body gave out. Darkness swallowed me whole. And just before I lost consciousness, I caught one last glimpse of Kyson—rushing toward me, panic etched across his face. Chapter Five 5 Geena’s POV When I woke up again, I found myself hanging from the tree in the old estate. After seeing me awake, the bodyguard beside me expressionlessly untied the rope on my hands and let me down. “Ma’am, Sir Kyson instructed me to tell you that he doesn’t wish for such things to happen again. Otherwise, it won’t be so easy to let you go in the future.” Future? I let out a cold laugh. There would be no “future” between Kyson and me. When I returned to the villa, he sent me a few text messages, asking if I was alright. But after I didn’t reply, he stopped. For the next few days, he never showed up in front of me again. I no longer cared where he went. Instead, I used the time before leaving to quietly collect documents about his family—along with the evidence he and Madz had once sent me. The day before my departure, Madz sent me a message. [Do you know where Kyson has been these past few days? If you come out right now, I’ll tell you everything—the whole truth.] Her words had no effect on me. What I didn’t expect was that an hour later, a masked man would suddenly break in and knock me unconscious. When I woke up again, both Madz and I were tied up at the edge of a cliff. Kyson stood in front of the masked kidnapper, his face full of terror. “Let them go!” Kyson shouted, his voice shaking. “No matter how much money you want, I’ll give it to you!” The kidnapper sneered. “I’m a professional. I have my code. Besides, who says you’ll even be able to pay me?” As he said this, his eyes flicked toward me in a strange, deliberate way. Madz noticed it too. Tears welled in her eyes as she quickly cried out, “Geena, I know you still hate me for what happened at the old estate, but please—at least wait until I give birth. After that, you can do whatever you want with me, but not now.” Then she turned her tearful gaze toward Kyson, pleading desperately. “Kyson, I know you’ll choose Geena, and I won’t ask for more. I just beg you for one thing—please, save my baby!” As she spoke, she struggled against the ropes on her wrists as if preparing to throw herself off the cliff. At that moment, everything became clear to me. The message that lured me out… The ambiguous glance from the kidnapper. Madz wanted to frame me for this kidnapping! “Bitch, you’re insane!” I spat through gritted teeth. But Kyson was already blinded by the scene before him—or maybe, deep down, he had only ever wanted to choose Madz. He gave me one disappointed look and said coldly, “Geena, I told you already—the incident at the old estate was your fault. There’s nothing between Madz and me. The only one I love is you. You don’t need to use something like this to prove yourself.” The masked man suddenly slapped Madz hard across the face and barked, “Enough! Make your choice! Which woman do you want? Delay any longer, and I’ll throw both of them down!” The next second, he shoved at Madz’s bindings, forcing her a full step closer to the cliff’s edge. She teetered there, on the verge of falling, and Kyson’s expression twisted with panic. After a painful pause, he looked at me one last time. His voice was hoarse as he roared, “I choose her!” His finger... pointed straight at his mistress. The kidnapper raised a brow, then glanced at me again before finally releasing her. Kyson rushed forward, pulling Madz tightly into his arms. His expression was complicated as he looked back at me. But the kidnapper had already stopped moving. He clearly had no intention of pushing me over. That only seemed to confirm Kyson’s suspicions. “Geena,” he said firmly, “I don’t ever want something like this happening again. When you come back, you’d better apologize to Madz. If you refuse… then don’t bother coming back at all.” With that, his face hardened. Holding Madz close, he turned and walked away without hesitation. Once Kyson had disappeared, the kidnapper pulled out his phone, grinning with glee. “Jackpot.” He burst into laughter. “After I throw this woman down, it’ll all be over!” While he was lost in his excitement, I quietly edged backward, step by step. He noticed almost immediately. His face twisted with rage. “Where do you think you’re going? Your husband doesn’t love you anymore. He doesn’t even trust you. What’s the point of staying alive? You might as well let me do you the favor of ending it.” With that, he lunged at me. But at the very last second, the police—finally arriving, though late—pulled me safely behind them. By the time everything ended, I dragged my battered, aching body back to the villa. Kyson and Madz would not be here. I gathered every last document, then carefully packed the “grand gift” I had prepared into a box I’d set aside long ago. After one final look at the place I had once naively called home, I turned and walked away without hesitation. Outside, the people Dad had arranged were already waiting. Once I got into the car, I tapped out a message on my phone. [Kyson, the gift I prepared for you will be waiting when you return.] Just then, his mistress began sending me photo after photo—each one showing her and Kyson in passionate embraces. I let out another cold laugh and forwarded the images to my family’s lawyer. Then I snapped my SIM card in half and tossed it out the car window. Very soon, these photos and the rest of the evidence would fuel my revenge. I’m going home. As for Kyson and Madz—what they owe us, I’ll make them pay back with interest. #ShortStory #Fiction #WebNovel #FromWeakToStrong #SheWon #Karma 📚 Only a few chapters are available here.
