Prologue Broken promises ache as badly as hunger. Humiliation stings like getting lemon juice in a paper cut. This goes beyond that. This betrayal goes beyond the lies and expectations of what we are and what we've been raised to believe. It goes against everything that makes us what we are. No matter our rank. I watch from the terrace of the apartment I got for my mate and me when he returned from his alpha training last year. I had been so excited to see him after we spent our senior year apart. I gave up going to my dream school to stay here with him. Santiago Romano held me in his arms, sold me pretty lies, and loved me the way he had promised before leaving. A part of me knew that I would be discarded after the full moon fell on my sixteenth birthday, and I didn't shift. I spent days avoiding him, trying to deny that someone from a Beta bloodline as strong as mine would be reduced to nothing but a lowly omega. Everything had been perfect before that. We had met the day we both started at Artume Academy—two years after one of the cruellest rogue attacks in werewolf history. There were six hundred and eighty-seven casualties that night. I barely survived. I shouldn't have, but I did. I've never wished to have died there more than I wish it now. My goddess-given mate has chosen his Luna. It's being televised for the world to see that I wasn't anywhere near enough to stand beside him. His parents hand-picked his Luna to carry his name, his legacy, and his heirs. Poppy Turner is wearing my dream dress with a huge smile plastered on her face. Her arm is looped through my mate's, and the two of them look like the perfect match as they walk into the moon goddess temple for their official mating ceremony. I turn the TV off and look down at my phone to see the message he sent me just before arriving at the temple. Three little words that don't mean shit to me anymore. This is for the pack, he said. You'll be better protected. You can now study to be a surgeon without the responsibilities of a Luna. I'll never leave you. You're the one I love—my true mate. Lies. The sick part is that there's a part of me that would accept this. I'd be his mistress, watching him build that life that should be ours with her. There's a darker side that looks back to the night of the attack. The night I saved her from the rogues, while my family was fighting. While they were dying. I should have left her there to be torn apart. I want to leave here. Run away and never look back. I have the means for it. All I'd have to do is call my grandmother to tell her I've had enough. She'd come for me in an instant. I know she would. But it wouldn't solve anything, and I'd be leaving everything I've worked so hard to obtain behind. There are three months left until the end of the semester. I'd lose all my credits, and my GPA would drop if I left now. It's all I have left. This career is the only thing that is going to keep me going for a while because this wound, like the loss of my family, it's going to take some time to heal. I spend the rest of my night reviewing my notes for my upcoming exam. It's almost eight when my phone rings. I reach for it to see my Grandmother's name and a picture of the two of us at my graduation last year. "Hey, GG," I answer. "Don't hey, GG, me young lady," she says in her thick Swedish accent. "What is the meaning of this, Sophia?" "I don't know," I answer honestly. "Did he reject you properly?" she demands. "No, he doesn't want to. He said that she'd be his Luna only in name." "I want you to come live with me, Sophia. You need not be where you are not welcome. Why haven't you called to let me know what's happening? I would have sent for you immediately," her tone is urgent. "Because you were on business for the King. I didn't want to bother you with something so trivial," I shut my laptop and close my notebook. "Trivial? My love, this is not something to be taken lightly. You are in pain. It will get worse once you reject him. It'll feel like a part of your soul is being torn away." "Please, don't make me feel worse than I already do," I sigh. "I can't just gather my things to leave. I have school and work. I'm not just his discarded mate. I'm more than just a floormat. This is why I didn't call you: I knew you'd want to come here immediately, and I don't want to lose myself over this. Leaving is a last resort." "Leaving?" I look up to see Santiago standing in the doorway of my home office, still dressed in his ceremonial suit. "GG, I have to go." I look away. "I love you." "Sophia-" I hang up before she can say anything else. "What do you mean you're leaving as a last resort?" he storms into the room and pulls my chair away from the desk to make me look up at him. I don't meet his gaze. "I told you that she means nothing to me. You're my mate. You're not going anywhere." I don't answer him. I push him away when her scent hits me. It's all over him. "I don't want you here right now. You're tainting my space with her scent. I can barely stand to look at you," I say calmly. "You're being so fucking dramatic, right now. I didn't have a choice, Soph. I'm not doing this to hurt you. I came home to you. You're my mate. You're the one I'm in love with. This is for our pack. You're turning your back on me to hurt me. You're acting as if I were the one at fault here," he growls. I cry out when he grabs my arm and spins me around to face him. "You're not leaving me. There is not a single fucking place in this world you can go where I won't find you. "You run, and you're only going to be making things worse for me," he grips both my arms with too much force. "You're hurting me," I try to pull away. He shoves me hard. Stumble back, hitting my head on the doorknob. The sting blinds me for a moment, but I don't have enough time to process it. "Look what you made me do," he says, dropping to the floor beside me. His hand presses on the spot I just banged against the doorknob. "Soph, I didn't mean to. I panicked." "Get away from me," I manage to cry out. His hand tightens around my throat. "You're not leaving me," he pulls me into him. His eyes are bright red, and his canines are out. "Say it. Say you're going to stay, Sophia." He leans into me, and for a second, my heart races when his teeth graze the curve where my neck and shoulder meet. The place he's told me wants to mark me. But he pulls away to cup my face to make sure I'm looking back at him. I've been in love with this boy since the first time I set eyes on him when I was fourteen years old. I thought I knew him. All of him. But the person in front of me is not the man I thought he was becoming. I don't recognise him at all. All I can do is stare back at him, fear and disbelief in my eyes. "Say it!" he shouts at the top of his lungs, making me jump. "I'm going to stay," I choke out. The lie tastes rancid on my tongue. "You can't leave," his wolf retreats, and I stare at his baby blue eyes as they fill with tears. "You can't leave me. I need you. I need you, Sophia. And you need me. Only I can protect you. You're mine." 1 Everyone is staring at me when I walk into my office after my classes are done. I can feel their gazes on my skin as I hurry over to the elevator. When I get to the maternity floor, I rush into the locker room to get ready for my shift. "Soph?" I look back at my best friend, Poppy's half sister. She's the last person I want to see right now, but there's not much I can do about it since we have the same shift. "Hey, Lieza," I greet her. The pitiful expression on her face hurts. "Don't." "This is awkward," she says, scratching the back of her ear nervously. "But the alpha sent roses." "What?" I ask, confused. I locked myself in the home office and slept on my giant bean bag last night. When I woke up, he was gone. He slept in the apartment. The bed had been undone, and his suit was on the floor, where he took it off, expecting me to clean it up. I would have left it there if I didn't hate having a messy room. I threw it away on my way out of the building. I finish putting my things away and follow her out. On the reception desk are five massive bouquets of roses and sunflowers. The nurses are all cooing over them. "Here, they came with this," Lieza says, holding up a hot-pink envelope. He wrote my name on it by hand. "These are so beautiful," Layla, one of the ultrasound techs, smiles at me. "You guys can have them," I say, going over to my computer. "I don't care for flowers." "They were a gift from your mate," Kennedy reminds me. "I don't have a mate," I say. Putting it out there hits me hard like getting mauled by a rogue after having watched it tear my brother to pieces seconds before. They don't say anything, but they understand, and the flowers disappear. I go about my day as usual, then head home after my shift. His car is here when I arrive. I don't park; I head back out right away. I need some time away from him—time to piece together my thoughts. Artume General Hospital is located near the main strip, where tourists frequently gather. The restaurants and stores are all open late. I have dinner at my favorite Korean BBQ spot and keep to myself, not wanting to draw any attention. As I have my dinner, I can't help but think about the night I found out I wasn't worthy of having a wolf. It was a night a lot like this one. My grandmother was sitting behind me in our backyard as the sun came up. It marked the night of the full moon in my birth month, and nothing happened. I didn't feel any different, and I didn't hear the sound of my wolf's spirit. "It could be late because of the trauma from the attack," she said, crouching down in front of me. I couldn't bring myself to look up at her. "Go back to school on Monday, and we'll meet again next month. I'll book an appointment for you later today. Go to bed." There's never been an omega in my bloodline. Ever. It was why the Helvigs were accepted into the city ranking system. My father had made a name for himself before he met my mother, who is from here. My grandmother encouraged him to relocate so he would have better opportunities. My body was shaking. All I could think was, what am I going to say to Santiago? How will his family react to me being what I am? They don't have to say it for me to know what was happening. I knew what was happening. I have been deemed an unworthy vessel. My phone pinged as if my thoughts summoned him. His name and our picture pop up on the screen with the voice memo. "I'm looking forward to seeing you on Monday. I love you." There is a tiny chance that my wolf is late because of the surgeries I had after the attack. I was twelve. That was almost seven years ago. I couldn't bring myself to open the following message, let alone reply. I dry my hair and curl up under the blankets. Sleep didn't come, but after a few hours, my grandmother came in to tell me that I have an appointment to get checked out. I got dressed, and we headed over to the clinic. I'm sure she's paid the doctor and the staff to keep all of this quiet. "Hey, Sophie," Dr. Valkrie greeted me the way she used to when I first met her. We all thought I was going to die then, and being an omega in my family has felt just like that. "Hey," I greeted her quietly. "Okay," she took a deep breath and smiled. She glanced over at my Grandmother, and it's all it took for her to leave the two of us alone. "There are a lot of reasons why your wolf is a little late. Have you been stressed lately? Anything you want to tell me before I start probing?" "A little," I nodded. "I found my mate, or rather, he found me." "Congratulations," she smiled. "Why would this be stressful for you? This is a good thing." "He's the next alpha of the city," I whisper. She tensed up, and I knew exactly what she was thinking. I had been thinking about it all night. Alpha and Luna Romano are not going to like that. Luna Romano is Alpha Romano's chosen mate. No one really knows what happened to their true mates or if they ever had one at all. Dr. Valkrie leans forward to hug me. She sniffs me and then sits back. "You've mated with him," she states knowingly. I nod. "We can start there, but I have to be honest with you. If being with your mate doesn't bring her out, the possibility that you are an omega is high. It can be due to all the damage that was done in the attack-" "That's not what I want to hear," I cried. "I know. I know, Soph. The only way that this can move forward is probably if he marks you, but even then, the chances of the wolf you turn into being a higher rank are low. You have to drop combat training. "You have to tell him because if you lie, it's going to look very bad on you. I'm going to take some blood samples to ensure everything is okay. But I don't want you to get your hopes up. Okay?" I couldn't answer her. I swallow the knot in my throat and let her take the blood sample. I spent the rest of my weekend alone in my room. "Come down," my grandmother ordered on Sunday afternoon. She has her luggage ready, which means she'll be going back to Blackstone—lycan domain. "Thank you for coming, Grandma," I said. She let out a heavy sigh and tilted my head up. "You survived one of the most gruesome attacks in our history, little one. You gave up a part of you to ensure that justice was served to avenge your family. Don't let anyone take that from you. Do you understand?" "Yes," I choked out, but I didn't believe it. "Come," she opened the door that led into the garage. I walk in with her. Inside is a cobalt blue Volkswagen Beetle convertible. "You mother had this arranged from the moment she found out she was having a girl. "Helvig women are rare. Unfortunately, it has always been the men who have taken the glory in our bloodline. So, we were very excited when you were born. Finally, a little girl we can all dote on. Take care of it. Yes?" "Thank you," I nodded and wrapped my arms around her. Grandma has always had an icy aura about her. I was under the impression that she hated my mother and me. Perhaps it's not hate, but the lingering coldness of having to serve under the Lycan King. Grandma Zaraphine is about four or five inches shorter than I am. Her hair is black, highlighted by the grays and whites growing out. She doesn't look old, but her eyes give away her age. She's always been very elegant and refined. I wanted to be just like her. It was why I gave up on the medical program and joined the combat team at the start of my training. I started to cry again, and for the first time, she tightened her hold on me. I don't know how long we stayed this way, but when she finally pulled away, she wiped away my tears. She stared at me for a bit before letting me go. "Things will change for you, Little one. Drastically. If you need me to pick you up, call me. Do not hesitate. Do you understand? You are still a Helvig, and I will not allow you to be disrespected in any way. If I am unable to come personally, I will send someone on my behalf. Okay?" "Okay," I nodded. "I must be going. Try to keep this to yourself for as long as you can." "I can't," I inform her. "Why not?" "Santiago is my mate," I confessed. She inhaled deeply and pulled me into her again. "You call me immediately if you need me, Sophia. Do you understand?" "Yes," "I must go. I promised my general I'd be back before sundown. My heart stays here with you, Granddaughter. As always." "Be safe," I nod. I unlocked the car and climbed inside. It smelled brand new. Like that night, I sit here not knowing what to do. I can feel my phone buzzing in my pocket, but I don't have the energy to reach for it. I shut my eyes, needing a moment of peace. Anything to get my head out of the thoughts attacking the very essence of my soul. I am unworthy. There was no wolf spirit for me and no mate. 2 The smell of freshly made food greets me when I arrive at my apartment. I walk in to find Luna Romano in my kitchen and Santiago setting up the table. I look between the two of them, knowing that they're going to ambush me over what happened last night. I didn't think that my mate was a little bitch boy that needed his mommy to fix his life for him, but then again, he ended up marrying the woman she picked for him. "Sophia," she beams with way too much enthusiasm for my liking. "It's a little late for you to be out and about on your own, isn't it?" I stare at her, not knowing how to answer that. How dare she come into my home and say anything against me? She has no right, not even as the Luna of the City. I hold my tongue this once because, despite the shit show she's turned my life into, I once respected this woman almost the same way I respected my own mother. I kick my shoes off, and I head to my room. "Dinner will be ready in a bit," Santiago blocks me. "I already had dinner, thank you," I say, rolling my eyes and trying to get past him. He grips my arm in the same spot he had last night, pressing his fingers into the bruises I already have. I try to pull my arm out of his grip, but he only tightens it. I look up at him, wishing I had the strength to hurt him back with my entire existence. "Get cleaned up for dinner, Baby. My mom made us dinner. Take this off," he says sternly, motioning my scrubs. The two of us stare at one another for a long time before he releases me. I glance back at his mother to see her smiling proudly at his actions. She doesn't meet my gaze, and I don't argue. I rush into my bathroom as my heart beats faster than it ever has. I reach for my phone immediately and turn on the water. "I've been so worried about you," my Grandmother answers right away. "GG, Luna Romano is here," I try my best not to cry. "I don't feel safe." "All right," she says calmly. "Just do as you're told, I'm on my way." "Hurry," I try to calm myself. "Sophie," I almost jump out of my skin when Santiago bangs on the door. "I can at least have a moment to shower, can't I?" I call back and stuff my phone between the towels beside me. The door swings open, and I back away as he storms towards me. He's pissed. His eyes are dark, and the veins on his forehead are visible. "What did you just say to me?" he demands. "I just got off work. I want to take a shower. You don't need to be here for that," I hold his gaze. I know that he'll get suspicious if I become complacent. I've never been one to keep my thoughts to myself. His expression softens, and he reaches for a strand of my hair. "Shit, I'm sorry," he says, placing his hands on my waist and lifting me to sit on the sink. This isn't the first time he's done this, but it is the first time I feel repulsed by it. It's killing me, but I'm repulsed by the man I thought was everything to me. He reaches for the hem of my scrubs and pulls the top over my head. I'm trapped, and he doesn't see that this is wrong or that I don't want him touching me. I stay still, not knowing what to do. "I'm sorry," he leans into me. He buries his hand in my hair to pull my head back enough, so I'm looking up at him. "I keep fucking this up," He brushes his lips to mine, weaponizing our bond against me. My body reacts to his because of it. Tears slip from my eyes as he kisses me. He catches one on his tongue and lifts me enough to reach between us to get my scrubs off. "Please," I cry, not wanting to do this. "I don't-" "It's okay," he wraps my legs around his waist and covers my mouth to keep me from making a sound. "Stop," I mumble into his hand, trying to push him off me. His lips crash against mine, and he reaches between us. My omega traits are alive and well. He takes my reaction to our bond as an opening. Panic starts to set in because no matter what I do or say, he's not going to stop. It's in this moment that I realize too late that maybe I was never a person to him. Just an object no better than the shiny car his parents got him for his birthday this year. "It's only you, Soph," he mumbles into my mouth. "You're the only one I want." My mind blanks when he enters me. My body screams in protest, but he doesn't stop, and he's taking my struggling as fuel to get rougher. He presses his hand over my mouth again to keep him silent. "You're mine, Sophia," he repeats over and over until he's finished. I sit here for a while once he's done processing what just happened. When he knocks again, it's gently this time as if everything that's happened is now behind us. I didn't answer, but I ended up taking a quick shower mindlessly. He's not going to leave me alone. This woman is only going to make this a whole lot harder. She's standing in front of the dining table, her hands folded neatly over her belly. The smile on her face is one I'm all too familiar with. Before now, I used to take solace in it. Luna Romano has been like a mother to me since my mother passed. She would tell anyone who would listen that I, Sophia Helvig, was her only son's fated mate. Things changed when Santiago told them that I was an omega. They sent him away, and I was no longer invited to Sunday dinners in the main house. I was no longer a part of their family. If I'm such a disgrace on her family's bloodline, then why the hell does she want me here? I could just leave when the semester is over. I wouldn't make a fuss, and I wouldn't ask for a single thing in return. No one in their right mind would allow this humiliation, even if I am simply a lowly omega. "Why don't you come take a seat, Sophia?" She takes a step to her right and pulls out the chair to Santiago's left. She looks down at the chair and then at me. The action is almost threatening. "I think we need to have a serious talk." 3 Santiago is sitting there without meeting my gaze. I cautiously go around the table to sit where Luna Romano wants me to sit. I stay still as she reaches over me for the bread knife. I sit back as she cuts the freshly made loaf of bread in front of me. She places a slice on my plate and then another on his. I watch her hands as she moves to put other things on our plates, never setting the knife down. She walks around the table and sets it down beside her plate. "I understand that you are having some trouble with the new arrangement," she says as she takes a fork off the table. "I don't have to remind you that you are Santiago's mate." "No, you don't, and I don't think it's any of your business," I answer honestly—the two of us jump when Santiago slams his hand on the table. "Don't talk to my mother like that, Sophia," he growls. "It's alright, son," she says and continues to eat as if nothing were out of place. "Sophia, you shouldn't be making this harder than it has to be. You are Santiago's mate, and that comes with certain responsibilities." "No, it doesn't. You legally found a replacement for these so-called responsibilities-" "Of course, I did," she stops me. "Do you think you, an omega. A wolfless girl who is practically mortal could ever hold a candle to what a beta-ranked female can?" "I can do everything the beta-ranked female you chose and better. I have proven that over and over. In training and my studies. She wouldn't be able to hold the highest credentials in medicine, the way I can run circles around her studies in pack economics. The comparison isn't fair if you're basing this on genetics." "Is that what this is?" she laughs humorlessly. "You're jealous of Poppy?" "Poppy has nothing I need to be jealous about," I sneer. "Except you do. She is the new Luna of the City, whether you like it or not," she says flatly. "Do you know how many Lunas die a year because other alphas or rogues target them. You know, the very same rogues who took your family from us. You will never be in any danger with Luna Romano taking the lead." I stare at her, letting what she just said sink in. She just called Poppy Luna Romano. My hand twitches over the fork beside my plate. It would be so easy for me to get over this table with it to show her exactly what this little omega can do. I may be the lowest rank of my kind, but I was raised like one of them. My grandmother would rather kill me than let me walk around unable to protect myself. As one of the Lycan King's most trusted Major Generals, my training started long before theirs did. I was raised to be a soldier, and it was only by fate that I am now a healer. "Mom," Santiago says gently. "I think you should leave." "Excuse me?" she laughs, looking over at him. "I think you should go so that I can talk to Sophia alone," he adds. "You brought me here," she reminds him. "I know, and she knows how serious this is now. Get out," he growls. The two of them face off for a moment before she nods and stands up to leave. Neither of us moves as she gathers her belongings. She kisses the side of his head. He knows exactly what I would do to his mother, even though she outranks me. I'd spend the rest of my life in a prison cell here, and I wouldn't regret it. "I suggest you understand your position and soon, Sophia," she says, pausing at the end of the table. "We want to move forward doing things pleasantly. You can be a part of this family the easy way, or you can be a part of this family the hard way. The choice is up to you, but leaving is not an option." "Go," Santiago growls at her again. I sit here waiting for the weight of her words to break the silence between us. He expects me to stay here while he parades his chosen around for all to see simply because I'm an omega. Tears fill my eyes as the realization hits me like a slap across the face. They're all going to make my life a living hell, and he expects me to take it. "You swore you'd never let anything hurt me when I told you I didn't shift," I whisper. "I would never let anything hurt you, Sophia. You know that I would do anything for you." "Except this, right? You'd never stand up to your mother for us even if it killed me," I stand up. "She made us dinner, Sophia. The least you can do is try it," he says calmly. I suck in the mucus in my nose from crying and hack it up into my mouth before spitting it on the food she made for us. He stares at me in disbelief. I've never done anything so ill-mannered before. My grandmother would have never let me hear the end of it, but I think this is an exception she might be willing to overlook. "That's what I think about your mother's food, Santiago." I kiss him on the opposite side of his head. "It's going to take some time for us to get used to this. Sophie," he continues. "I'd reject you now if I thought you'd accept it. But I'm looking forward to doing everything in my power to make you do it. By the time this is over, you're going to hate me with every ounce of your soul the way I do you now." He reacts this time. His hand lashes out and grabs my wrist. He spins me around, pulling me into him hard. My chest smacks against his, hard enough to knock the air out of my lungs. "You hate me?" he laughs and pushes against me until my back hits the wall. My body is trembling, and I can't bring myself to look up at him because if he looks into my eyes, he'll know I'm lying. I want to hate him. I should. But our world is on fire. The flames are closing in around us, with nowhere to run. He did this. He did this to us, and instead of letting me go so that he may do his so-called duty, he wants me to stick around to watch him destroy everything we could have built together. "Reject me. Please," I beg him. "I don't want this. I don't want you like this." "Not a chance, Sophia. You said you'd help me make sure the City prospers," he says, burying his face in the crook of my neck. "This is it, Baby. As soon as we have an heir, it's over. It'll be just you and me. You'll bear my mark, and we can put it all behind us." 4 It's been a long time since I've been plagued with nightmares of the attack. I lay here beside my so-called mate, reliving the moment in silence. It's the final quarter. There are forty seconds on the board and six yards to a touchdown. My arms are tightly around the iron bars as I watch my oldest brother, Gavin, toss the ball to our brother Oliver. The two of them position themselves as the next play begins. All I can hear is the roar of my blood racing as I watch the final moments of the game. My brothers have been working so hard to get here, and winning this game will make them champions of this year's Packlands Championship league. "Let's go, Helvig!" someone shouts, and the crowd starts chanting our last name. The timer restarts, and the team delays the throw. The other teams are unaware of what's happening. Their eyes are locked on Oliver. Ten seconds. Oliver pushes off the ground, and the other team moves with him. Gavin rushes forward, pushing off the ground with all his might. The crowd erupts with joy as he jumps over the other quarterback, clearing the last yards. The stadium goes crazy. I scream, gripping the metal divider, and jump down along with a whole lot of other people. They did it. I cross the field and jump into my brother's arms. Oliver swings me around laughing, and then tosses me up, only for Gavin to catch me. The team and the others in the pack surround us. The older wolves howl while we, the juveniles, can only scream with joy. I have never been more proud of my brothers. I've watched them day in and day out train until they could barely stand to get here. I know it's one of the happiest days in their lives, and I get to be a part of it. "Where's Dad?" Oliver asks. I stare back at him, not knowing how to answer without ruining the win. I think he sees it in my eyes because he nods. "It's cool." "I'm here," I take his hand, and his smile returns. I jump on him again. "You did it!" "We did it," Gavin comes over with some of the other older boys and his mate. Joclyn. Joclyn is the prettiest girl I've ever seen in my life, and she complements my brother perfectly. The ideal beta couple is coming into power. I hear all the whispers about them, how they're going to make the pack stronger. The best thing that could have happened to the Artume Pack was the alpha bringing in my father when he was seventeen years old. No one has anything bad to say about any of us. "Hey," I point at Dad. We all turn to see him running to us. "He came!" I beam, patting Oliver's arm. "He's here." Ollie has always tried his best to please our dad. To walk in Gavin's footsteps to show him that he's worthy of being an official Beta. I know our father is as proud as the rest of our family, but he works a lot. Being the Pack's acting Beta is a full-time job, and sometimes he misses things. Gavin tries to explain, but it's hard to listen when there's a vacant spot in every event or ceremony. "Something's wrong." Gavin takes my hand and pushes me towards Joclyn. She immediately pulls me to her. Dad waves his hands. "Run," Oliver shouts at us. "Sophie," Joclyn pulls me, and I lose my grip on my brother's arm. A loud howl echoes in the darkness in the treeline. Joclyn's hold on my hand tightens as a massive wolves come out of the darkness like demonic shadows—one after the other in every direction. "Gavin!" I cry out, but he's nowhere in sight. "Sophie, stay with me," Joclyn shouts. I follow. The two of us run towards the crowd. She's smart, she's ducking under the crowd with me in tow, not trying to go through them. I scream when someone hits the floor beside me. It's Ms. Harper, my Algebra one teacher. Her eyes are looking back at me, but there's nothing in them. I scramble away from her to get closer to Joclyn. The two of us managed to get under the bleachers with a couple of other girls from my class. "Stay behind me," Joclyn growls. Two big wolves appear up ahead. We turn around to find two more at the other end. "The tunnel," I cry out. "Go," Joclyn shoves me, and she shifts. I take the hands of two of the other girls, and we make a run for it as some of the other pack wolves back Joclyn out. I push the girls to the left, keeping us tight against the wall. Two rogues run past us. I glance back at the others, knowing that they have no idea what to do. Not any more than I do. Think. Think, Soph. What would Ollie do? I poke my head out to see that people are dying everywhere. I see an opening to the parking lot. "Okay," I look over at the girl behind me. She's in my PE class. "Okay, do you remember when we did all four exercises?" "Yes," she nods, along with some of the other girls. "Don't stop until you get out of the gate. Head towards the main building," I order. "What about you?" she cries. "I'm right behind you," I promise. She steps forward. "The gate and then the main building. Hide anywhere." The four of them take off running the way we practiced. I look back and see no one. I don't want to leave Joclyn behind, but there's really nothing I can do. I turn around and run after them. I repeat it in my head over and over. The gate. The main building. The gate. The main building. The gate. The main building. My body screams when my hands reach the gate. I try to catch my breath, and as I prepare to break for the parking lot, I hear a howl, and my body freezes. I turn around to see my father's wolf trying to fight off the wolves, but I lock on to the dark brown wolf behind him. Gavin. My blood runs cold. Another howl echoes in the distance. I see the pretty sand colored wolf sprint across the field and clash against the group of rogues my father is trying to fend off. I step back, unable to believe what I'm seeing. My eyes scan the crowd, trying to find Oliver. I don't see him anywhere. He wouldn't want me to get in the way. If I run out there, I can risk getting hurt or distracting them more. I turn around only to come face-to-face with two wolves. Everything happens so fast. The pain blurs a lot of what's happening. I scream as I'm dragged towards the treeline. I kick and claw, calling out for help. I hear it then, Oliver's howl. The teeth embedded in my shoulder are pulled away, and I cry out as my brother's black wolf runs past me. "Oliver!" I cry out. But it's no use. I can't move. Everything feels hot, and all I can do is watch as those monsters rip my sixteen-year-old, newly shifted brother apart. I can't breathe. All I can taste is the metal in my mouth. I turn slowly, searching the chaos for my Dad. "Daddy!" I call out. I repeat it over and over as I pull myself towards the light of the parking lot. I reach the border and pull myself closer to the light. Two growls come from behind me. I look back to see the two rogues stalking towards me. The bigger one barks, and I cry out. It pounces forward, biting at my leg. With what little strength I have, I kick him. He whines, and the other one pounces on me. Its paw lands on the wound on my shoulder, and all I can do is scream. There's a howl, and the wolves pause. The look in the direction it came from. One of them runs off, but the other one keeps its eyes on me. The howl turns into a roar just as he's about to bite me again. He freezes mid-attack and turns his attention to the darkness behind him. More wolves rush out of the darkness. One in particular stands out. A massive silverback jumps out of the darkness of the clearing. His silver fur was almost luminescent in the full moon's light. He tears those other wolves apart without mercy. The one hovering over me lowers his body and turns around to escape. I scream and reach for it. The wolf is startled, and it bites me. I cry out again and again, refusing to let go. I can feel it tearing at my stomach, but if I'm dying, he's coming with me. Silver comes in my direction, and the wolf latched onto me let's go. I keep my arms around its leg the same way I had when my brothers won tonight. I feel the hit of the young King taking the wolf off me. I fall onto my back. Water or maybe blood fills my lungs, and I can't breathe at all. I try to gasp for air, but relief never comes. All I can see are the stadium lights that illuminate the football field I've grown to love. I lay here thinking that was probably the worst thing that could have ever happened to me. The man at my back, who swore his love and devotion, sleeps peacefully, not caring that he's tearing me apart. 5 I sit up when my alarm goes off and turn it off before it can wake him. I shower, trying my best to get his scent off my skin. To erase what he did to me until he was satisfied. My skin is raw by the time I'm ready for my first class today. I make a quick breakfast for us. I take my coffee and try to escape before he wakes up. I almost jump out of my skin when I turn around to see him standing behind me. He's never hidden his presence from me before. His smile is one I'm very familiar with. I have woken up to it every morning since his return. It was a testament to the happy life I thought we were building. It comes off sinister now that I've seen the beast he'd been hiding from me after all these years. I look at him, and I only see a stranger now. A stranger in my mate's skin. "You were going to leave without saying goodbye?" he asks, stepping closer. "I didn't want to wake you, and I'm already running late," I lie, taking my cup off the counter. He steps with me and takes the cup. "Okay," he says, putting it back on the counter. "I made a reservation for us at-" "Do you really think going out in public would sit well with the pack days after your wedding?" I ask, stopping him. He tenses up. He's never been one for rejection, and up until now, I've never had a reason to say no. I'm questioning everything, and all I feel is emptiness. "I'm trying to make it up to you," he sighs. "I didn't want this either, Sophia." "I understand, which is why I'm telling you now that going out in public wouldn't be right. It would reflect poorly on the two of us. It'll be disrespectful to your wife," I see him visibly tense up as I take my cup from the counter again. "I'll see you tonight. Here, where no one can see." "I'm sorry," he blocks my path again. "Tell me how to make this right again." I stare at him to see if he looks genuine. He seems to think this is a tiny little obstacle in our path, but he doesn't understand the rules of choosing a mate. He's not going to get anything he wants without marking Poppy. What we had was over the moment he allowed his parents to dictate what would happen as he moved forward as the alpha of Artume City. Hell will freeze over before I ever forgive him. Not just for the wedding or not being able to stand up for us, but because of his actions. I don't want him anywhere near me, and he doesn't seem to care. He doesn't see that he's hurting me and making things worse. "I just need some space," I step back. "You didn't even warn me, Santiago. I knew your parents stopped caring for me the moment you told them I was an omega. I didn't think you would ever buy into it. You accepting this only proves to me that you think the same thing they do." "I don't. Sophie, you mean everything to me. You are the love of my life. From the moment I laid eyes on you," he grabs my wrist. "You have to know that." "I did," I pull my arm out of his grip. "But I find it very hard to believe it's the truth anymore." He stares at me, and I can see the war he's in with his wolf. His expression blanks, and I look away to go for the door. "Do you still love me, Soph?" he asks as I step out of the apartment. I take a deep breath and leave without saying a word because that's a stupid question. I hurry into my car and leave before he decides that he wants me to stay with him for the day. Sitting in class is not something I want to be doing right now. I'm in agony, and I have nowhere to go to let it out. Everyone is staring at me. I may not have a wolf, but I can still hear them whispering about me. Those who have hated me from the moment Santiago made our relationship known think I have finally been put in my place. As if being Santiago's mate was the only thing I was ever good at. It's such a shallow notion, and it's an odd feeling when I think that I was no better until the day I didn't shift. I complete the pop quiz and take it to the front. I'm still the first one done. I'm probably the only one in this class who's going to ace it. None of them is going to see that simply because my misery is more exciting. They want something to make me smaller. Envy is ugly when power is involved. I never wanted any of it. I fell in love with the idea of mates, especially after I lost my family. Before I went to Artume Academy, my grandmother had to stay here with me. We were both miserable. She was stuck here babysitting a twelve-year-old who couldn't even move after the attack—two years of surgeries and physical training. It was lonely, so when I met the boy with the pretty sea glass colored eyes and sly smirk, I didn't even question it. It was comforting to be vulnerable around him. To have someone to share my small world with. He was my best friend, but he was gone for a whole year, and things can change during a big stretch of time. I was stupid to think I'd get the same person back. "Ms Helvig," Professor Harrington greets me. She takes my test and sets it down on her desk. "If you need some time to-" "I don't. I'm fine," I reassure her. Her pity stings. I gather my things, wanting nothing more than to go back to my apartment and sleep for the rest of the day. "Omega bitch," someone growls as I make my way over to the exit. I pause and see an eraser on the desk beside me. Using my knee, I knock the table up and round-house kick the eraser at her. She turns back to look at me right on time, and I get her right in the center of her forehead. The class laughs at her when she stands up and screams. "I may be some omega bitch, but I can still end you. Then you'd be the stupid bitch that some omega nobody killed," I remind her. Her eyes are glowing amber with rage. I stand my ground, waiting for her to give me an excuse to beat the shit out of her. She stares at me long enough for it to be embarrassing for her. She takes a seat without saying another word. Some of the others laugh at her. I walk out satisfied. I slam against a brick wall, dropping all of my things. I look up to see a smirk aimed back at me. "Bullying the little girls, Little Omega?" he grins. "Some things never change, huh?" 6 It's been about three years since the last time I've been around the second crown prince of the Lycans. My grandmother used to bring him and his older brother here when the Lycan King and Queen were away on business. Ivar Axel is five years older than me and was best friends with my eldest brother, Gavin. Growing up, he and Gavin made it their life's purpose to infuriate me and my brother Oliver. "My prince," I step back and bow. "Don't even do that," he laughs. I smile at him and crouch down to pick up my things. "Are you okay?" Professor Harrington comes out of the classroom to check on me. I stand up, looking between the two of them. Ivar hands me my belongings. "I'm sorry for the interruption, Professor. I ran into an old friend. This is Ivar Axel. The second crown prince," I introduce him so that she can just go back inside and leave me the hell alone. Is everyone going to ask me if I'm okay? That's the last thing I need. Maybe leaving school early and having to work twice as hard in the upcoming term, so I'm not set back, isn't as bad as I think it might be. Then again, the perfectionist in me would riot. "My prince," she bows to him. She looks up at me. For a moment, she considers reaching for me, but she hesitates, then nods. "Be careful." "What was that?" Ivar laughs when she goes back into her classroom. "Don't ask," I shake my head. "It's been a long time, your highness." "I know. I'm sorry, but it's been a long two-" "Three years," I correct him. I was sixteen the last time I saw him. Not long after, I found out I was an omega. I chalked it up to the exact reason why everyone else pulled away. When others heard I didn't shift, they recoiled as if I had suddenly become contagious. "Shit, it's really been that long?" he laughs. "I'm going to the cafeteria for breakfast. Want to come?" "Lead the way. You know I love to eat." "What brings you to Artume City?" I ask. He takes a deep breath and lets out the heaviest sigh ever. I laugh at how dramatic he still is. That hasn't changed at all. "I got in trouble," he admits. "The night before a huge summit, I went out with some of the alphas in the North, and we got plastered. I didn't show, and Ragnar benched me for the rest of the year." "Ivar," I say his name, disappointedly. The alphas of the North are known for their wild parties. They're all a bunch of cowboys. "I know. I know," he shrugs. "But honestly, I don't even care. I'm tired. I hate politics, and my dad wants me to be beta. That means I'd have to walk beside Ragnar for the rest of my life, and I can't think of anything worse." "I thought you guys were close. Did something happen?" I ask. "Nah, I just hate how planned out his life is. He doesn't know how to have fun. He's devoted to sucking up to our dad and training to be the new Lycan King. I don't have that responsibility, and we have an amazing up-and-coming Beta. I don't see why he's pushing this so hard." "I can think of one thing. You'd be the King's most trusted. There would be no one better to watch his back than his own brother," I shrug. He takes two trays off the belt and hands me one. "Okay, when you put it like that, it makes me sound like I'm entitled," he smirks. "Just a little," I laugh. "So, what? You decided to come slum it with us civilians?" "Actually, I'm here on guard duty." "Oh yeah? Who?" I ask, interested. "You," he says. "Me?" I ask, glancing back at him as I reach for a slice of pizza. I snort as I take a few other items. "Why would I need guarding?" "You tell me. Major General Helvig set the order. My orders are to stay with you until your move to Blackstone. She didn't specify any details," he says, glancing at me as if I were hiding some grand secret. I grab a couple of drinks and get in line for the cash register. My stomach tightens as I play what he said over and over in my head. She couldn't make it, so she sent Ivar to make sure I made it back in one piece. Santiago is not going to like it one bit. Shit. "Ms Helvig," the girl at the register greets me kindly. "Hey, Steph," I say. "The two lunches, please." "Of course," she says and rings us up. We take a seat somewhere away from the big crowds. "Is there something you want to tell me?" he asks. I reach for my lemonade. The sleeve of my hoodie pulls up. I try not to make it evident that I'm hiding it, but I know he saw it. His playful demeanor instantly fades. He stares at me as I reach for my breakfast pizza slice and take a bite. What am I supposed to do in this situation? Lie? To the crown prince? And then what? I tell him the truth, and he confronts Santiago. This is not going to end well. "Some shit happened," I shrug it off. "Who did that to you?" he asks. "I mostly did it to myself," ugh. I just said that. "Did Santiago hurt you?" he asks, his voice low, and leans forward to hear my answer. I don't know how to answer him. I don't know how to explain what is happening to me. I'm scared. Anything I do or say will be evaluated. Santiago made a choice, and I wasn't it. Yet things aren't as black-and-white as that. He sits back without pushing it, and I feel like an idiot for feeling this relieved. "Can we talk about this later? Where are you staying?" I ask him. "At the Helvig Estate. There are instructions for you," he says, reaching into his jacket pocket. He places the envelope with the royal seal wax stamp on it. I wipe my hands and my mouth before reaching for it. There are envelopes—one for me and one for Santiago. I shut my eyes, already exhausted with where this is headed. I open my letter to see it written on the page. By order of Major General Zaraphine Helvig, Sophia Marie Anne Helvig is to return to the Helvig estate for the remainder of her school term to liquidate all Helvig properties and ensure the safety of all valuables so they may be returned to her in Blackstone. It's specified that no outsiders are to enter the house during this time to protect said valuables. It goes on to say that Ivar is here to ensure that everything listed is completed in accordance with the provided schedule. It's not only signed by my grandmother, but the Lycan King himself. If anyone were to question it, they would have to ask the two of them directly. "Fuck my life," I toss the envelope onto the other one. He'll know exactly what's going to happen when the term ends in three months. There will be no hiding it, even if I'm able to convince him for a while. We'll both know. I wonder if we're going to make it out of this. If anything will ever be okay again. "You promise to tell me what's going on when we get home?" he asks. "I'm going to have to keep him off you, aren't I?" "I'd like to think he's above that, but it's a probability," I whisper. "Okay," he nods, his expression softening. "I'll try not to kill him. Although I doubt my brother would hate it when I tell him I mistakenly started a war because someone is hurting you."

The Woman He Left in the Dark

The moment the auction hammer fell, I thought that three-hundred-million-dollar necklace would end up around my neck. "Mr. Channing really does spoil Evelyn to the bone." The whispers around us hadn't even faded when Ethan Channing stepped right past me and walked straight toward the woman sitting at the far edge of the second row. He opened the velvet box himself, lifted out the Dream Tide necklace, and clasped it around her neck. "Ethan, you still remember I love stars." The woman slipped off her sunglasses. Her eyes were faintly red. "Of course." Dead silence fell over the room. Every gaze that had been full of envy when it landed on me shifted all at once into something unmistakably like pity. I sat in the VIP section, my fingertips digging into the ultrasound printout buried inside my purse. Six weeks. A tiny gestational sac. That piece of paper suddenly felt like a brand pressed against my skin. So it turned out he could toss me fifty million dollars for some painting without a second thought, and in the same breath, lift another woman onto a pedestal in front of everyone. Evelyn's POV New York's most prestigious charity auction. Dazzling lights. The quiet rustle of silk and perfume. I sat in the front-row VIP section, my hand drifting almost unconsciously to the hidden pocket of my clutch. Inside was an ultrasound printout I had gotten that morning. Six weeks. You could already make out the tiny gestational sac. "Our next lot is Resting Light, a posthumous work by the celebrated autistic savant painter. Opening bid: ten million dollars." The auctioneer's voice echoed through the hall. I'd always loved that painting. I wanted to bid on it and hang it in the art therapy room at the special needs school. The man beside me, Ethan Channing, was leaning back in his chair with that lazy ease he always carried. He didn't even glance at the stage. He just raised his paddle. "Fifty million." The room erupted. Then came the whispers, thick with envy. "Mr. Channing really does spoil Evelyn rotten, dropping fifty million on a painting without so much as blinking." "Who doesn't know Evelyn is everything to Ethan? Seven years, and the man built her the best special needs school in all of New York from the ground up." I turned to look at him as the murmurs swirled around us. His profile was sharp and composed. He noticed my gaze and turned toward me, brushing a loose strand of hair behind my ear with an ease that felt entirely natural. "Do you like it?" His voice was gentle. "Think of it as a warm-up for your seven-year anniversary gift." Something warm stirred in my chest. I reached for his hand. I was finally about to tell him about the pregnancy. "Ethan, I actually have something for you too." "Shh." He closed his fingers around mine, but his eyes had already moved past me, toward the stage. "The closing lot is up." It was the evening's headline piece. The Dream Tide sapphire necklace. Opening bid: one hundred million dollars. Ethan let go of my hand and sat up straight. "Three hundred million." His voice dropped into the silence of the room like a stone. Final. Unarguable. I froze. Three hundred million for a necklace? I never wore jewelry like that. Ethan knew that about me. The hammer came down. Ethan rose from his seat. Under the eyes of every person in that room, he accepted the velvet box from the attendant. I thought he was going to hand it to me. I'd already begun to smile. But Ethan simply stepped past me. He walked, long and unhurried, straight to a corner at the far end of the second row. A woman was sitting there. Slender. Dark glasses covering her face. Ethan stopped in front of her. The cool edge in his expression softened in an instant. He opened the box himself, lifted out the necklace, leaned down, and fastened it around her neck with his own hands. The woman slipped her sunglasses off to reveal a face that was delicate and pale. She looked up at Ethan, her eyes going pink at the corners. "Ethan, you still remember I love stars." "Of course." His voice was quiet, but it reached me clearly. That was Serena. Ethan's first love, the one who had left for Paris seven years ago. The room went graveyard still. Every look that turned my way shifted in an instant from envy into pity, sharp and unconcealed. I sat where I was, the ultrasound printout in my bag pressing against me like a hot iron. So this was how it worked. He could casually throw fifty million at a painting and keep me gilded and displayed like something precious. And then, in the very same evening, he could grind what was left of my dignity into the floor for someone else, with the whole room watching. He gave me every material thing I could want. And then, in front of everyone, he delivered the cruelest blow imaginable.

😭💔💔💔I have the best mother-in-law in the world, yet I couldn’t win my husband’s love. I once naively believed our daughter’s arrival might change his heart. Then, at her birthday party, I saw him and another woman holding our daughter’s hands — standing together like a perfect family portrait. After seven years of marriage, I had lost completely — not only his love, but even my daughter’s gaze no longer belonged to me. In that moment, my heart shattered like glass. So I quietly resigned from my job, mailed the divorce papers, and completely left their world. This time, I made a clean break — without a single glance back. ================================ Chapter 1:The Family Of Three Soraya Montclair lasted 120 days without a word from her husband. She thought she’d already survived the worst. Until tonight. Under the stage lights, her daughter walked out—hand in hand with his mistress. “Mommy,”she called sweetly… but not to her. The audience applauded. Her husband stood beside them, like it was always meant to be this way. And Soraya? Just a stranger in the crowd. The first piano note rang out. And something inside her finally broke. *** ~Soraya~ “Excuse me,where’s the auditorium?”Soraya asked the school’s security guard. “That way,”the guard pointed.“Are you attending the recital?” “Yes,my daughter is playing the piano today,”she happily shared.“She doesn’t know I’m coming.I’m surprising her.” “Well, better hurry,ma’am.It’s about to start.Good luck to your daughter!”the guard answered. “Thank you!”Soraya clutched the small gift bag tighter and dashed off,her heels tapping across the marble floor. Soraya missed her daughter so much. Her little girl,Sage, bright and beautiful, was her world.Soraya swore she would hug and kiss her the moment she saw her. She wanted to look her best for Sage, wearing her favorite dress and the perfume her daughter once said smelled like“home.”Because lately,“home”had been slipping away. Why?Because someone had been trying to steal her daughter’s affection, and that worried her the most. Her husband,Calum Montclair, had sent her on a business trip for four months. While she was gone, she rarely had contact with Sage.Worse, she felt as though her daughter had been avoiding her. Soraya’s trip wasn’t due to end until next week, but she worked long hours to finish early. The auditorium was packed when she arrived. There were no seats left. She stood at the back, craning her neck, clutching her gift and her phone. Soraya texted her husband, letting him know that she was already there: [I can’t find you and Sage.Where are you?I just arrived at the auditorium.I made it to Sage’s recital!] There was no answer, not that she expected any. The truth was,her husband never loved her.She had come to terms with that. The only person who kept her holding on to her marriage was Sage. It didn’t matter, though. She was used to her husband’s indifference. She just wanted to see her daughter. The recital began. The auditorium came to life as kids from Evermoor Academy began their performances. Phones were up,taking photos and videos.Around Soraya, people clapped enthusiastically. Some parents even joined their children’s performances. “Sage, where are you?”Soraya looked around, but still, she couldn’t find her daughter. She managed to move past the crowd. And finally, when she reached the center of the auditorium, she noticed her husband’s tall frame. He was seated in the front row, looking as handsome as ever. But when Soraya saw who was sitting beside him,she froze. Her face turned pale, and her hands trembled. Before she could process anything, the host’s voice echoed through the speakers. “And next to perform is Sage Montclair! She will be playing a classical piece on the piano with her mom!” The words rang in Soraya’s head. ‘Sage is performing with me?’she thought, confused. She and her daughter hadn’t practiced at all.She had been gone for four months.Although,Soraya had been the one who taught her daughter how to play. But when her daughter stepped onto the stage, everything became clear. She was not the“Mom”they were referring to. They were referring to someone else. Walking onto the stage beside her daughter was Rose Becket, her husband’s mistress. Yes,Soraya was married, but her husband loved another. The next few minutes felt like torture.Soraya could only watch as her beloved daughter played the piano beside Rose, each note striking deeper than the last. As they played,Sage glanced up at Rose with a smile so pure it shattered Soraya’s heart.Their fingers moved in perfect harmony. It was an unspoken bond on full display. ‘So this was why Sage had been secretive about the recital,’Soraya realized bitterly. Her daughter, the child she carried for ten months, the little girl she raised and loved for six years, had chosen another woman to share her music, her joy,her heart. Of course,it made her angry. This was Calum’s mistress, after all! How could Calum let Rose play with Sage? And Sage already knew Soraya detested Rose! By the time Sage’s recital ended,Soraya was burning with rage. She barely heard the host call Calum to the stage. “Let us also welcome Sage’s dad up to the stage, our principal sponsor for today’s event,Mr.Calum Montclair!” Soraya watched her husband’s proud expression.Calum wore a custom-made suit, his tall frame and chiseled features ever so defined. He stood beside Sage and held her hand. Then he smiled at Rose. That smile was priceless, gentle, and full of adoration. ‘So he does know how to smile,’Soraya muttered.Because in front of her,he only ever wore indifference. “Wow,such a lovely couple.” “And they have a beautiful child as well.” Soraya overheard the praises, and instantly,a tear slid down her cheek;her throat felt paper-dry. ‘Indeed,’she thought.‘They look like the perfect family of three.’ Calum Montclair, the CEO of the Montclair Group, was every woman’s desire. He was the wealthiest man in Cedar Heights, having transformed their family business into a thriving empire.Rose Becket,on the other hand, was said to be a gifted entrepreneur, having launched a fashion line immediately after her doctoral degree. In the eyes of many, they were a perfect couple, but no one knew that Rose was merely…the other woman. Just when Soraya thought she had seen enough, the host encouraged Sage to say a few words. And her little girl proudly said,“I would like to thank my Mommy Rose for coming to school today and playing with me!She is so pretty, smart, and talented! And I’m so happy Daddy came to my recital. It’s his first time!” The crowd laughed at Sage’s excitement, whereas Rose smacked Calum’s arm, teasing him. Everyone in the auditorium was amused…except Soraya. Her heart shattered into a million pieces. She mused silently,‘If they were the perfect family of three…then where do I belong?’ *** The recital was over. The crowd began to disperse. But Soraya stood still for a moment, her heart refusing to move on. Then she saw them. Calum.Rose.And Sage. Her Sage. They were together like a picture-perfect family. Despite the growing ache in her chest,Soraya forced her trembling legs to move.As she approached,Sage’s teacher,Miss Gale, noticed her and froze. “Mrs.Montclair…”the teacher murmured. Her expression was a mix of sympathy and shock. “I’m sorry,Mrs.Montclair.”If anyone,Miss Gale had witnessed all of Soraya’s sacrifices for Sage in school. She knew,Soraya was the rightful Mrs.Montclair.When Sage got hurt or sick while in school,Soraya always came to her daughter’s aid.Soraya attended most school activities without Calum. Soraya averted her gaze. “It’s fine,”she whispered to Miss Gale, though nothing about it was. When Calum’s eyes met hers, his expression hardened.Deep lines etched across his face as his brows furrowed.Without a word,he reached for Sage’s hand and guided Rose away, right past her. Like she was invisible. “Sage!Sage, wait!”Soraya called, running a few steps after them. Her daughter turned. For one hopeful second,Soraya thought Sage would run to her.But instead,Sage’s eyes darted toward Rose, and she looked away. Then,as if in slow motion,Sage reached for Rose’s hand instead. Soraya’s chest tightened. She could barely breathe as she followed them out of the auditorium, ignoring the stares that followed. By the time she caught up,they were already at the parking lot. Sage and Rose were seated in the car.Only Calum stood outside, his posture cold and guarded. “Why are you back?”he demanded. His jaw clenched, hands buried in his pockets like he was trying to restrain himself. “I wanted to make it to my daughter’s birthday,”Soraya said, forcing a smile.“Can’t I—” “You’re not invited,”Calum snapped. Chapter 2:Replaced ~Soraya~ ‘Not invented?’The words hit like a slap. Sage’s birthday was two days away. That was Soraya’s other reason for returning early. “What?”Soraya blinked, her voice trembling.“What do you mean I’m not invited?I’m Sage’s mother.” “We’ve already made arrangements,”he said flatly.“I’m introducing Rose to new friends. So no,you’re not coming.” Her voice broke as she shot back,“You don’t get to decide that,Calum! She’s my daughter too!” Calum’s lips curled cruelly.“Then go ahead.Ask Sage.” He motioned to the car.The window rolled down with a soft hum. Sage’s small face appeared,so familiar, yet so painfully distant. “Sage, sweetheart,”Soraya said softly, trying to steady her voice.“Aren’t we going to celebrate your birthday like we always do?At home?Mommy’s back.I can bake your favorite cake.” Her daughter fidgeted, glancing toward Rose and Calum. “Sage, please,”Soraya whispered, her chest tightening.“Don’t you miss Mommy?” She hoped again. In her mind, she prayed to the heavens. Calum’s voice cut through the air.“Go ahead,Sage.Tell her.” Sage swallowed hard. Then, with her little voice trembling, she said,“I’m sorry,Mommy. You’re not invited to my birthday.Daddy and Aunt Rose already made plans.” For a second,Soraya forgot how to breathe. “Sage…you don’t mean that,”she said, tears spilling freely now.“I’m your Mommy.I love you more than anyone.” “Sage, don’t you love Mommy anymore?”Soraya tried again. Sage opened her mouth, but she closed it again. Then, after looking at Rose, she turned to Soraya.“I want to celebrate my birthday with Aunt Rose.” Soraya’s heart sank altogether. Because Sage’s choice was clear. Her daughter preferred Rose over her. “I’m sorry,Soraya,”Rose said smoothly, placing a hand on Sage’s shoulder.“But it’s her birthday.Whatever she wishes for,she gets.” Then, with a smug smile,Rose added,“And she wants to spend her birthday with me.” “We are not coming home.”Calum didn’t even look back.He opened the driver’s door, got in. “Calum,”she called.“Calum, wait!I’m not done talking to Sage!” But despite her plea, the car drove past her. “Wait!”Soraya ran.Tears, yet again, spilling down her face. Because she tried so hard to chase after Calum, she ended up falling on the ground and spraining her ankle! “Mrs.Montclair!”Miss Gale noticed her and offered help.“Let me take you to the hospital.” Soraya looked up and caught a view of her daughter’s face looking out the window, just as Calum’s car left the parking lot. Sage saw. Calum surely saw,but neither of them bothered to stop the car and check on her. *** “Soraya!Oh,my goodness! How are you?”Lyra Hayes,Soraya’s long-time college friend, came to the hospital to help her. Sage’s teacher could only manage to take her to the hospital, but she had other things to do.So,Soraya called her friend over. Soraya was in the ER,getting her ankle wrapped. When the nurse was done, she shared with her friend.“I tried to chase after Calum’s car.” It had been a long time since Soraya and Lyra connected. Her friend had been away for a while, working in another city. But thankfully, that day,Soraya’s call made it through, and Lyra was available. She told Lyra everything that happened earlier that day. “Oh,my god,Soraya. This has gone too far,”Lyra said.“Even Sage?” Soraya did not answer first. She grabbed her phone and sent her daughter a message:[Sage,I really miss you.Where are you and your daddy?] She waited, and two check marks appeared on the messaging app,but Sage did not reply. Soraya:[Don’t you want to see me on your birthday?] Still, there was no reply. “Lyra,I’m tired,”she said, tears gathering in her eyes. Her friend nodded. She offered Soraya a hug and said,“I can imagine.Seven years into this marriage, and this is what you get in return.” She cried hard. Her friend cried with her. Because of the pain she felt,Soraya started counting numbers in her head.It was one of the ways she tried to take control of her emotions.‘Four.Three.Two.One.’ Lyra was one of those who had witnessed all her sacrifices for Calum and Sage.So her friend knew just how deep her pain was. “I’m really tired,”Soraya repeated.”If Sage doesn’t want me anymore, then what’s the point of staying?” Lyra nodded. “It’s time,Soraya,”Lyra said, pulling away. “Can you help me get a lawyer?I want to draft a divorce agreement,”Soraya said. *** Soraya had discovered her husband’s affair with Rose more than six months ago.How long had it been going on?She never found out. Only a handful of people knew Calum was married—his parents and a few trusted friends. So when he began showing up at public events with Rose,no one questioned it.No one knew he already had a wife waiting at home. The Montclairs objected,of course.Calum’s parents,Amanda and Cedric, adored Soraya. They tried everything to make their son love her. They even encouraged her to work at the Montclair Group. So that she could stand by his side and earn his approval one small step at a time. She gave up her career for him.Her ambitions. All for a love that never came.Instead, the more she tried, the colder he became. By the time Soraya learned about Rose,it was already too late.Calum had introduced Sage to her long before. Sage was too young to understand. She was just a child. She was innocent, curious, and easily won over by kindness. “Aunt Rose is really pretty,Mommy. She dresses really nice. She buys me gifts all the time. She’s Daddy’s friend,”her daughter once said, smiling. Back then,Soraya hadn’t thought much of it.But when whispers reached her ears, the rumors about Calum and a beautiful entrepreneur named Rose Becket, something inside her twisted. The name rang a bell. And then everything made sense. She confronted Calum, trembling, angry, humiliated. He didn’t even look up from his work. “Mind your own business,”he said. That was how insignificant she was to him. It hurt. It hurt over and over again. Following that confrontation,Calum sent her away on a business trip. “Only you can close this deal,”he said. For the first time,Soraya believed he trusted her with something important. In those four months, she worked day and night, desperate to make him proud. But it was all a lie. Apparently,Calum had planned it from the start. He wanted her gone.He wanted Sage and Rose to have time together,to build a bond in her absence. Now that she was back, she realized what he had truly accomplished. He hadn’t just betrayed her. He had replaced her in Sage’s heart. Chapter 3:Choose Herself ~Rose~ In a high-end luxury penthouse,Rose was reading Sage a bedtime story. As she did,the young girl looked around the room, her eyes wide with wonder. Rose was pleased. After all,she had prepared the room for Sage. The bed was big and fluffy, with light curtains hanging from the window. On the walls were posters of Sage’s favorite girl band. Her favorite books were stacked neatly on the table beside the bed. Rose had gone all out,as if for someone she deeply cared about. Why?Because Sage cared. That’s what made her so easy to spoil…so easy to win. Rose had watched her quietly over the past few months, noticing how Sage lit up with attention and gifts, and how she softened with kindness. And as Soraya started slipping from Sage’s thoughts,Rose didn’t have to say much. A small comment here,a quiet smile there…It was enough. Sometimes, love wasn’t stolen. It was gently replaced. And Rose knew how to do that—especially with a child who still believed the world was kind. “The end,”Aunt Rose said after closing the book. “Aunt Rose, this house you’re staying in looks very new and expensive too,”Sage said. “Your dad bought it for me.That’s how much he cares about me,”Rose replied. “Why doesn’t Daddy care for Mommy?”Sage asked.“If only he would care for her and show up at home to celebrate my birthday.” Rose shrugged and said,“To care for someone, you can’t force it.” She didn’t know if Sage would understand, but she hoped the little girl would. After all,Calum never cared for Soraya. They were married, but there was never a real relationship between them. At best,Soraya was a mere surrogate. “But Mommy loves me,”Sage said, looking conflicted. “Oh,my poor baby.”Rose offered an embrace and hugged her.“I know your mom loves you.But sometimes, love isn’t enough to keep a family together.” “Are you sure about tomorrow?Aunt Rose and your daddy can always step away for your mommy,”Rose suggested. Sage shook her head.“No,I want to be with you and Daddy on my birthday.” A triumphant smile spread across Rose’s face. She had been patient, but she knew it wouldn’t be long now.Surely, with everything going on,Soraya would break. After putting Sage to sleep,Rose smiled. She walked back to the study, where Calum had been working on his laptop. Earlier’s encounter with Soraya was unexpected. She wasn’t supposed to be back until next week. Honestly?Rose was worried Soraya would spoil the birthday party she had planned for Sage, but to her surprise,Calum’s daughter didn’t want her mother there! It was perfect. Her plan was moving forward, faster than she expected. “Sage is asleep,”Rose said to Calum. “Good,”Calum simply said, his fingers still working on the keyboard. “I think I’ve totally won her over,”Rose claimed, walking toward him and sitting on his lap.“You didn’t think I’d be able to do it,did you?” Calum stopped whatever he was doing and wrapped his arms around her.“Hmm.You did well.” Rose kissed Calum, and within minutes, sensual moans filled the air. She rejoiced inside. There was no sweeter victory than having the wealthiest man in the city wrapped around her finger. *** ~Soraya~ “Hi?What’s your name?”the fourteen-year-old Soraya greeted with a smile. She was attending Cedric Montclair’s birthday party.Upon seeing Calum, she immediately approached. Of course,Soraya already knew who he was.The Montclair and Azar families had lived across from each other for years. “Calum,”the young Montclair heir said.He shook his head like he already knew there was no need for introductions. “Can we be friends,Calum?”she asked. He just shrugged, and Soraya took it as an approval. There was a time when Soraya and Calum got along just fine.Their families were close, and being neighbors,Soraya saw his achievements and grew to admire Calum. Yes,Calum was a handsome man.He was tall and athletic, with brown hair and sharp blue eyes. But Soraya didn’t fall for just his looks. She loved the quiet strength he carried. He didn’t talk much, but when he did, people listened. He took over the family business at a young age,and even then,he acted with the seriousness of someone much older. Yet life had a way of turning everything upside down. One crucial night changed everything, forcing them into marriage. That was when Calum started hating Soraya. He firmly believed she had orchestrated the events leading up to her pregnancy. Soraya had hoped she could win Calum’s heart. After all,she was young, bright, and attractive. She had an angelic beauty, with long, brown hair that cascaded down her back and skin as fair as ivory. She did not have to wear heavy makeup or provocative clothes to stand out.Aside from her natural qualities,Calum’s parents adored her. However, throughout their marriage,Calum treated her with disdain. He ignored her,and the worst part was how he allowed his friends to look down on her.And now,he flaunted a mistress without even batting an eye. There was no other way to go around it.Soraya needed to choose herself,or else she would be the useless person Calum’s friends had labeled her to be. Soraya had been home this past few days, packing her things. One would think that, despite her absence, her husband would call or be concerned—but no.He never called or texted. Calum didn’t care. They did not celebrate their anniversary.Calum never came to her birthday celebrations, and unless the party was held at the Montclair mansion,Soraya was never invited to his birthday party. Neither had Sage replied to any of her messages, maybe too afraid she would ruin her birthday celebration. Soraya had already called her uncle. She was moving in with them in Beldridge, the next town. Her uncle had relocated a few years back.Only she remained to be with Sage. Just before leaving, she left the signed divorce papers with the maid. She told her,“Please give this to Calum. These are divorce papers that I have signed.Tell him I sent him a message. He hasn’t read it yet.” Belinda, the maid, who had long served them as Sage’s nanny, gulped. She said,“Are you sure,Mrs.Montclair?” “Look at me,Belinda. It’s my daughter’s birthday, but she didn’t even invite me,”Soraya forced a smile and said.“It’s for the best.” She hugged Belinda and said,“Thank you,Belinda, for everything.I now leave my daughter’s care in your hands.” “Mrs.Montclair,”Belinda wept.“I know where Sage’s birthday is being held.I wasn’t supposed to tell you. It’s at the Butter&Crumb Cafe.” Soraya nodded.“Thanks for telling me.I guess I could drop by and just look.I promise I won’t tell.” Her mother’s heart still couldn’t leave it alone. At least, she wanted to wish her daughter a happy birthday from a distance. So,she made her way to the Butter&Crumb Cafe. Soraya thought she was prepared for what she would see,but she was wrong. She was very wrong. *** “Happy Birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday, dear Sage.Happy birthday to you!” Soraya watched in secret behind a door as the scene unfolded. Balloons floated lazily in the breeze.Laughter danced like music across the cafe’s garden area. And in the center of it all was Sage,in someone else’s arms. Rose was carrying Sage while Calum clapped his hands. The crowd cheered as the trio blew out the candle on the giant fondant birthday cake. Sage did not even like fondant cake, but she looked happy. Around them were Calum’s social circle, his wealthy friends, and two of his cousins. “Sage, are you happy to celebrate your birthday with Rose?”Claire,Calum’s cousin, asked Sage. “Yes,of course!I love being with Aunt Rose!”Sage said, wrapping her arms around Rose with a beaming smile.“Even my classmates like Aunt Rose.” “We are happy for you,Sage!”someone said. “We are happy for all of you!”Calum’s cousin raised a glass, referring to Sage,Rose, and Calum. From where Soraya stood, she overheard everything. Soraya, yet again, questioned her life choices and the sacrifices she had made for her family.‘Was it worth it?’ Right now,it did not feel like it. What further added to Soraya’s resentment was how Rose was warmly welcomed by Calum’s friends. Never had Calum brought Soraya to any of his friends’gatherings. However,it was so much easier to flaunt Rose in front of them. Soraya felt the ache again,so much that she rested her hand on her chest. After witnessing enough emotional torture, she turned on her heels, but as she did,she bumped into a tall, overbearing man on the street. “What are you doing here?Don’t cause any trouble. It’s Sage’s birthday!”he warned. This man was Jacob Steel, one of Calum’s friends,a high-profile businessman in Belridge, the neighboring town.Like Calum,Jacob had that icy charisma and the unmistakable air of affluence. Hearing Jacob’s remark,Soraya retorted,“Cause trouble?Me?Why would you think that,Mr.Steel?I willingly agreed not to be invited to my own daughter’s birthday. As a mother,I just wanted to see her.Is it a crime?” She could tell Jacob was stunned by Soraya’s reply. “I know.I know. You think I’m the evil one here? But,do you really think I wanted this?”Soraya snapped. She couldn’t help it.All of Calum’s friends had judged her the moment she got pregnant with Sage.“I’m still twenty-six.I got married at nineteen and threw away my life and career for Calum and Sage!” “You all judged me,but you never really tried finding out the truth.”Soraya’s jaws clenched.“Fine,though.Let me be the bad person! It doesn’t matter.I don’t care anymore.” She turned her back on Jacob and marched toward her car.In the car,she called her Uncle Philip.“Uncle.I’m leaving for Beldrige.See you in two hours or less.” “And…Soraya, what about Sage?”her uncle asked. Soraya thought about it and said,“Sage…she—she doesn’t need me anymore.” Chapter 4:Resigned ~Soraya~ On a Monday,Soraya drove back to Cedar Heights early in the morning. It was an hour-and-a-half drive. She was already four blocks away when she noticed Calum’s car! Yet again, she sensed her heart racing. She had to pull over and calm her emotions. With her eyes closed, she muttered,“Twenty, nineteen, eighteen, seventeen…one.” As her eyes slowly opened, she spotted Calum’s vehicle parked two cars down.Moments later,Calum stepped out and opened the passenger door, letting Rose Becket exit with a bright smile. Soraya looked away, realizing that Calum and Rose were together as early as seven. It could only mean they had slept together.Worse, maybe he had brought Rose to their marital home. Her chest tightened again,so much that counting numbers no longer worked. Soraya hugged herself and muttered her newfound mantra,“Control,Soraya, control.Feelings pass.Feelings pass.Control.” It took a while, but when Soraya had finally regained her composure, she realized Calum had brought Rose to her boutique. Soraya didn’t know Calum had a romantic side. She supposed he never really cared for her at all. A bitter smile tugged at Soraya’s lips. She let the truth sink in deeper, letting her anger sharpen her resolve. This low point was only temporary;her comeback was already coming. After Calum left Rose’s shop,Soraya waited five minutes before driving to Aegis Core Systems. Aegis Core Systems was a top-tier cybersecurity firm known for its enterprise-grade protection. It had built a multi-million-dollar empire by supplying advanced security solutions to major corporations. Its most profitable system was the NeuroSentinel. Soraya parked her car and went straight to the upper ground floor.Approaching the front desk,Soraya said,“Excuse me.My name is Soraya Azar.I want to claim my profit share for the past four years.” “Do you have a licensing profit share,Miss?”the front desk asked with a smile. “Yes,”Soraya replied. The lady called the person in charge, and after confirming that Soraya was,in fact,a developer of one of their programs, she gave her an ID pass. Soraya easily found her way to the finance department. The person in charge gave her a big smile. He looked tense as he offered his hand,“Miss Azar,it’s such an honor to meet you!And my,you are so young and beautiful!” “I’m sorry.I never expected you to be this young, but then again, most geniuses are young.”The man motioned to a seat and said,“Please, have some coffee or tea.” “Thank you for the compliment.”Soraya’s heart was still like a block of ice,but she forced a smile.“Water is fine.Is the check ready?I called last Thursday to make the withdrawal.” “Yes,it’s ready.I prepared the check.I was very excited to meet you,”the man said.“My name is Albert Smith.I am the accounts payable manager.I started working here two years ago and heard so much about you from Mr.Ward.” Soraya could not help but smile at the mention of her old friend,Silas Ward. Her heart softened a little. She asked,“I’d really like to see Silas. Is he here at the moment?” “Mr.Ward is on a business trip.He has been a busy man, following our expansion to the capital. After all,he is now the big boss,”Albert remarked, chuckling. “The big boss?”Soraya asked, bemused. “You don’t know?”Albert asked.“Mr.Ward is now the CEO of Aegis Core Systems. He had his appointment last month. After your collaborative effort with Mr.Ward,he quickly rose from a Tech Engineer to a project manager,VP,and now,the boss.” “I believe he used his profit share to buy company shares of Aegis Core Systems,”Albert reported. Soraya’s mouth fell open in disbelief. Her dear old friend had made it big! And then it hit her like a slap:if she hadn’t abandoned her career at Aegis Core Systems, she could have been standing beside Silas by now. Yes,this was her first workplace after completing her Computer Engineering degree at Cedar Heights Institute of Technology. Soraya had a unique way of learning and processing numbers. She was so good at it that she managed to skip grade levels and finished college when she was eighteen. After graduation, her internship company,Aegis Core Systems, immediately offered her a job,and she began working under the mentorship of Silas Ward. Because of her busy schedule, taking care of Sage while working hard for Calum,Soraya had not been in touch with Silas. She wasn’t the type to have a social media account either. In the middle of everything,Soraya had lost her old phone, leaving her with no way to contact Silas. “I am happy for Silas,”Soraya said. Then, she wrote her number on a piece of paper, handing it to Albert.“Do you mind telling him that I came to see him? Here’s my number.I changed contact information three years ago.” “Certainly,Miss Azar. When he returns,I shall give him your number.”Albert put her contact information inside his drawer. Then,he said,“Excuse me for a moment.I just need to get the acknowledgement paper for your check.” Albert came back with the document, which Soraya quickly signed. Then,Albert passed her the check, shocking Soraya to the core.“I earned six million dollars in four years?” That was ten times more than what she had expected. It was primarily the reason why she took so long to withdraw her profit share.Soraya was saving it for rainy days. Then, the gut punch. “Miss Azar,”Albert said.“You would have earned ten times more if you hadn’t given up your exclusive rights as the co-developer of NeuroSentinel.” *** ~Calum~ Meanwhile, back at the Montclair Group,Calum,Soraya’s soon-to-be ex-husband,was reviewing documents on his desk when his assistant walked in.He called his assistant and asked,“Is Soraya back?Tell her to stop her theatrics and work on the East Project.” Greg Foster,Calum’s assistant, gulped. In the office, only he knew Soraya was his wife.“Sir,your wife called me last week and said she was resigning effective immediately.Miss Azar said, she informed you.” Calum stilled. His eyes landed on the brown envelope Belinda gave him before leaving the house that day.He still hadn’t opened it yet,and he still hadn’t read Soraya’s messages. Calum thought Soraya was still throwing a tantrum, but when he read her text, his brows knitted. He…couldn’t believe it. Chapter 5:Divorce ~Calum~ Calum’s striking features tightened subtly. His brows pulled together, creating a slight furrow between his usually composed eyes.He was a man who never second-guessed himself, but at that moment,he hesitated. Slowly,he read Soraya’s text. [Calum, Let’s end this, once and for all. First,I am formally resigning. Please allow me to leave the company immediately and without complication.I’ve dedicated the past four years to serving you, often without pause. There is no longer any reason for me to remain.I’m sure you’d prefer my absence. Second, the matter of our divorce.I am not seeking anything from you.I only want my freedom. This will also allow you the freedom to be with Rose openly and without restraint.I have not informed your parents of my decision.I trust you will handle that appropriately. Third, about Sage.I won’t fight for custody. Please tell her that I love her deeply and always will.I won’t be seeing her for now.I need time to remove myself from everything. In truth,I believe she would rather stay with Rose than with me. Lastly, there’s no need for further contact between us.Below is the contact information for my lawyer. Please have your legal team coordinate directly with them to finalize the divorce proceedings. I trust you will see this through swiftly. –Soraya] Inside the brown envelope Belinda had given him,Calum pulled out a divorce agreement. He confirmed that Soraya had,in fact, asked for nothing. He sucked in a deep breath and leaned back in his seat. Just as he stared at the last page, where Soraya’s signature had been affixed, someone knocked on his office door. One of his good friends walked in—Melvin Carter. “Calum,I really need to talk to you about my investments,”Melvin said before finding his seat. Like Calum,Melvin was a businessman. His family owned several gas stations in Cedar Heights and Belridge. Seeing Calum seriously holding on to a set of documents,Melvin asked,“What’s that you are reading?” “Soraya asked for a divorce,”Calum revealed. “Pfft!”Melvin leaned back, laughing.“What a joke.We all know she would never divorce you. She’s banking on the fact that she has the support of your parents!” “She was the one who drafted this divorce letter,”Calum revealed.“She…even tendered an immediate resignation.” Melvin grabbed the divorce agreement and noted,“She doesn’t want anything?”He shook his head, saying,“I don’t believe it.Trust me,Calum. She is just doing this to get your attention.Give it a few days, and you’ll see, she’ll come running back here.” “She hasn’t been home for a week,”Calum pointed out. “After she found out she wasn’t invited to Sage’s birthday?”Melvin asked. He hissed and added,“I guess she is mad.She has a right to be,though, but I get it.Sage wanted Rose to be there, and Soraya would never want to be around Rose.” “Right,”Calum acknowledged. “You know what?Since she signed it,you had better file it immediately before she changes her mind—like,do it now!”Melvin suggested.“This is your chance to finally get rid of her.Isn’t that what you have always wanted?” “Hmmm,”Calum reacted, his hand retaking the divorce agreement.“It is.” He took a pen and was about to sign it when he stopped. His brows met again.“No,I should give her alimony.” “What? Why?She forced her way into this relationship, remember?”Melvin suggested. “She gave me Sage, and she took care of our daughter for six years.Another thing,if my parents ever find out that Soraya is leaving with nothing,we will have another argument,”Calum reasoned. “Well, you have a point.Besides, she’d probably need a lot of money after relinquishing the title of Mrs.Montclair.God knows what kind of work she can do,”Melvin remarked.“Didn’t she simply assist Greg?” “You’re a talented man,Calum. You need someone who matches your skill level, someone like Rose,”Melvin suggested. Calum merely nodded. He called his lawyer and made several arrangements. In the evening,Calum returned home, finding his daughter,Sage, eating a piece of cake from her birthday the other night. “Daddy, this cake isn’t as yummy as Mommy’s cake,”Sage complained. Then,Sage looked behind him, asking,“Is…Is Mommy back?” “No,”Calum replied plainly.“Your mommy may not come to see you for a while, but she told me to remind you that she will always love you.Is that okay?” “Gone for a while?”Sage looked up.“How long?” “I don’t know. For a while,”Calum replied, unsure himself. Sage frowned.Just when Calum thought his daughter was hurt,Sage asked with a smile,“Then, can I invite Aunt Rose?” “You like your Aunt Rose to visit you here?”Calum asked. “Yes,and we can spend time together—like dinner or play in the backyard!”Sage suggested.“I like it when you take me out with Aunt Rose. She buys me a lot of gifts and that means you’ll be here too!” She made a face and suggested,“Because you don’t usually go with me and Mommy.Since Mommy won’t be here for a while,I’d like to spend time with Aunt Rose.” “I see. Then,I’ll tell her.Rose would love to spend more time with you,”Calum said before pinching Sage’s cheek. Calum walked up to the master bedroom after speaking with Sage.He was about to take a shower when he realized his phone had several messages. In a group chat that included his circle of friends,he received many words of encouragement and some advice. Melvin:[Ladies and gentlemen, let’s have dinner tomorrow.Let’s celebrate Calum’s upcoming divorce!] Roger:[What? No way.Soraya practically dedicates her life to Calum. She’ll never leave Calum.] Roger:[I bet it’s just an act.] Melvin:[I thought so too,but she did give Calum a divorce agreement. She signed it.] Jacob:[She asked for a divorce?] Roger:[If that’s the case, congratulations,Calum!] Claire:[Oh,wow!I hope this is for real!Congratulations,Calum!I hate to say this, but Soraya was just too pathetic. She used Sage to keep you for a very long time.] Claire:[ Rose, this is it!Soon, you’ll be Mrs.Montclair.] Melvin:[Rooting for you, Rose and Calum. To new beginnings.] Rose:[You guys.Let’s not be selfish here.We also need to consider Sage’s feelings.] Rose:[ Calum. You know I never pressured you into anything.Think this through properly.Take as much time as you need.] Claire:[You are too considerate,Rose. That’s why you’ll be better suited for my cousin,Calum.] Jacob:[Calum, you need to be sure about this.Sage will need her mother.] Melvin:[What’s wrong with you,Jacob?Don’t you remember how Soraya used such vile methods to force Calum into marriage?] Claire:[Yeah, there was never a relationship between Calum and Soraya. She’s like a surrogate,if anything!] Roger:[Rose can be Sage’s mother.Remember the party?Sage preferred to be with Rose rather than Soraya!] Jacob:[No one can ever replace a mother.] Calum frowned in disbelief.Jacob Steel, usually the most detached and ruthless among them, was taking Soraya’s side?Among his friends,he despised Soraya the most. What had changed? *** What Calum didn’t know was that Jacob had seen Soraya that night. And whatever passed between them…left Jacob questioning everything he thought he knew about her. Chapter 6:Jacob Steel ~Soraya~ Soraya was busy the whole day. After visiting Aegis Core System, she went to the bank to make a deposit and then viewed apartment options. Since she hadn’t yet met with her friend Silas,Soraya remained uncertain about settling in Cedar Heights.Another option was to stay in Belridge momentarily and help restore her uncle’s company to its former glory. As Soraya drove back to her uncle’s house, she passed by a park.Something caught her eye, prompting her to pull over and walk out. She was about to enter the park when she noticed a young girl, looking like she was about four or five, running across the street on her own! Soraya gasped;her motherly instinct kicked in. She noticed a black sedan struggling to avoid the girl.Soraya ran, grabbed the little girl, and rolled to the side of the road. She did not care that she had ruined her coat. Her arms protectively wrapped around the little girl. People crowded around her as Soraya remained on the concrete. “Are you okay,Miss?” “How is the child?” The driver of the black sedan ran to them, saying,“I’m so sorry. She came out of nowhere.I wasn’t sure if stepping on the brakes abruptly was fast enough or—” “It’s okay,we understand,”one man said.“The girl did run too fast into traffic.” “Angela!Angela!”a man’s concerned voice echoed in the air. Everybody figured it was the father or the child’s guardian. Someone had helped Soraya up.Just then, the young girl looked at Soraya with guilt. She appeared teary-eyed and nervous. She sniffed before hugging Soraya back, her little arms wrapping around her neck. “It’s okay. You are fine. You are safe with me,”Soraya assured the child. “Angela!Thank God,you are okay!”the unknown man said behind Soraya. “Mister, you should watch over your daughter carefully. She almost got hit by a car!”someone said. “I’m so sorry, everyone,”the man said, his deep voice laced with a touch of panic. When Soraya finally turned to the man behind the voice, her breath hitched.‘No way!Of all the people!’ It was Jacob Steel. Of course,it was him!Calum’s arrogant,judgmental,steel-faced friend who ironically always looked like he’d stepped out of a luxury magazine ad. His usually pristine trench coat was wrinkled as if he’d run through a storm. His dark hair, always perfectly combed, now fell over his forehead. And his eyes, sharper than she remembered, reflected fear. The sight of him made Soraya pause. The polished, untouchable billionaire,Jacob Steel, suddenly looked human:he was out of breath, messy, and clearly worried. It felt strange. The last time Soraya saw him,he wasn’t exactly kind. Her eyebrows pulled together as the memory came back.Still, when she looked at the little girl clinging to her like a koala,Soraya couldn’t bring herself to pull away. “Soraya,”Jacob spoke first. “Mr.Steel,”Soraya acknowledged. ‘Right,’Soraya remembered.‘Jacob lived in Belridge. This was his town.’ “Is she—”she hesitated before resuming,“your daughter?” “Yes,”Jacob responded. His voice, deep as ever, was slightly ragged from running, but there was something raw in it too.Maybe guilt.Maybe panic.Maybe both. He stretched his arms toward the girl, his eyes clearly inspecting if she had been hurt during the fall. Angela turned to Jacob, silently admitting their kinship, but still, she refused to let go of Soraya. “Angela, come here, let’s not bother Soraya.”Jacob tried to pull Angela away, but the little girl sure was strong. Angela’s actions reminded Soraya of the times when Sage was younger.Soraya’s daughter was the same:possessive of her. When Sage was two years old,Soraya could barely go to the bathroom at night because her daughter did not want to leave her side. While that was happening, the crowd around them had dispersed. The driver from earlier had also left the scene. “Angela,it’s time for dinner.Didn’t you want to eat at your favorite restaurant?Your ice cream is waiting,”Jacob said, pointing to the establishment across the street. ‘Oh,so that’s what happened,’Soraya mused. She tried to help Jacob out by turning to the girl.“Aren’t you hungry?Don’t you want ice cream,Angela?” Only then did the little girl pull away slightly and give Soraya a nod. “Then why don’t you go with your…daddy?”Soraya suggested. She forced a smile, adding,“Get some food and ice cream?” The little girl looked at Soraya with puppy eyes. Then,Angela cupped Soraya’s face and turned her head to the park. She did this twice before Soraya realized Angela wanted to look at the lights display in the park, the same wonder that made her pull over to admire. Soraya couldn’t help but smile. She turned to Angela, asking,“Do you like lights?” Angela nodded. She did not say a word but simply pointed to the light display. “Do you want to go there?”Soraya asked, and the little girl nodded. “Angela, let me take you instead,”Jacob said. This time,he sounded like a scolding father. However,no matter what he did,Angela refused to remove herself from Soraya, and again, she proved to be very strong.Angela used all her limbs to wrap herself around Soraya. “Angela!”This time,Jacob was mad. “You know what? It’s okay,”Soraya said. She smiled again and gazed at the light display. She said to Angela,“Do you want me to go with you there?” Angela finally smiled and nodded.Again, she did not speak and pointed to the beautiful lights. Left with no choice,Jacob followed Soraya and Angela to the park. From the corner of Soraya’s eye,she noticed Mr.Steel signaling what looked like his bodyguard or driver to stay behind. Minutes later, they stood before a mounted LED screen flashing with colorful lights. Angela smiled, her eyes fixed on the lights before her. “Angela likes lights, among other things,”Jacob explained. Soraya did not turn to Jacob.Instead, she focused on the LED screen. It was bright and colorful.A huge toy robot lit up with dancing lights. The lights moved in patterns, spinning, flashing, and changing colors. Most people watched for fun,but Soraya saw more. She observed closely, her eyes following each flash.A slow smile formed on her lips. ‘The colors change every two seconds...It flashes in a loop...That part repeats every five steps...Oh,they used a spiral pattern.Nice,’she remarked silently. Her brain was already breaking it down like a puzzle. She could guess the timing, the rhythm, and the pattern without anyone telling her.It made her feel calm,as if the lights spoke a quiet language only she could hear. In all the noise around her, this made sense.Numbers made sense.Patterns were safe. For a moment,Soraya forgot everything else:Calum,Sage, her parents, her pain. She just felt like herself again. “Angela is an Aspie,”Jacob said.“She’s fixated on fast-moving lights and patterns.” Soraya’s smile brightened, and her gaze shifted to Angela, who was still looking at the LED screen. She responded to Jacob,“I had a feeling. The way she communicated through gestures reminded me of how I used to be.” Turning to Jacob, she admitted,“I should know.I also have Asperger’s Syndrome.” The revelation made Jacob frown. She assumed he thought ill of her again,as usual.Soraya scoffed and said,“If you don’t believe me,I don’t care.I’m not trying to win your sympathy.I—I just feel for your daughter,Mr.Steel.” Just then,Angela turned to Soraya with a bright smile. She opened her mouth, hesitated, then tried again. Finally, she said,“M...M...Mommy.” Hearing that,Soraya’s heart leaped, her eyebrows raising.‘What?’ On the other hand,Jacob froze, his eyes locked on Angela. The sudden silence stretched between them, heavy and charged. Then his voice broke through, filled with shock.“Angela...you spoke?” If it wasn’t enough to make Soraya panic,Angela further tightened her hold, saying,“Can you be my Mommy?” Soraya nearly choked on her spew. She wished she could bury herself under the ground, right that very moment. ================================ Open the app and continue reading the rest ofthe story .👉(lt will automatically jump to thebook when you open the app)

Three years ago, my husband and three children threw a grand party for his mistress—and humiliated me by making me sign the divorce papers like a public execution. Heart shattered, I walked out that door and never looked back. No home. Marco took it. No family. They chose Margaret. No money. Everything was in Marco's name. Even then, I didn't ask anyone for help. I spent three years learning business, mastering finance, and understanding exactly how money worked. I built myself into a financial titan. Now, I'm back. And they're all on their knees, sobbing at my feet. "Mommy, please—we're starving on the streets! Just take us back!" "Lucia, please stop this. Just give me one more chance to love you!" -------------------------------------------------- Chapter 1 The ballroom sparkled with golden lights. Lucia stood near the entrance in her blue dress, the one she bought just for tonight. She kept touching her necklace. The silver one. Marco gave it to her on their first date. People smiled. Friends. Family. Neighbors. They said congratulations. They said everything looked beautiful. She planned it all. Every flower. Every candle. Every tiny detail. "Mrs. Hart, you look so happy," someone said. She was happy. She thought she was. The door opened. Marco walked in with a woman. Young. Maybe twenty-five. Blonde hair. Red dress tight against her body. She held Marco's arm like she owned him. Lucia's smile died. The room got smaller. Hotter. She couldn't breathe right. Marco looked at her. His eyes were cold. Empty. "Everyone, listen up." His voice cut through everything. The music. The laughter. The joy. The room went silent. Everyone turned. Stared at him. At the woman. At Lucia. "This is Margaret," Marco said. No feeling in his voice. Nothing. "I'm leaving Lucia for her." The words punched into Lucia's chest. She couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. What? "We've been together for two years." Marco's voice stayed calm. Like this was normal. "Margaret is moving into the house. Lucia's things are packed. They're in the garage." Two years. She made his breakfast. Washed his shirts. Slept beside him. Kissed him goodnight. Two years of lies. "Marco." Her voice cracked. "This is our anniversary. Our party. The children..." "The children know," Margaret said. Sweet voice. Too sweet. "They've known for months. They support us." No. Where were they? Ria? Lucas? Monica? There. Corner of the room. All three standing together. Ria stared at her. Sixteen with Marco's eyes. She crossed her arms. "Mom, just sign the papers. You're making this harder than it needs to be." The words cut. Deep. "Ria, baby, I don't..." "Dad's been unhappy for years," Lucas said. Fifteen. Her boy who used to be scared of thunder. "We all knew. Everyone knew except you." Monica giggled. Thirteen. The baby Lucia still tucked in at night sometimes. "Margaret takes us shopping. She actually listens to us. You never do." Lucia's legs shook. The floor tilted. Was she falling? Standing? She didn't know anymore. "I gave you everything." She looked at Marco. The man she loved. The man she believed in. "Everything I had." "You gave too much," Marco said. He pulled papers from his jacket. Divorce papers. "You smothered me. Margaret gives me freedom. She makes me feel like a man again." Margaret smiled. Victory written all over her face. "Sign them." Marco held out a pen. "Here?" Tears filled Lucia's eyes. "Now? In front of everyone?" "You're embarrassing yourself," Ria said. "Just do it already." People watched. Some turned away. Others whispered. Some pulled out phones. Taking pictures. Recording. Her pain as entertainment. Lucia's hand shook. She took the pen. The paper blurred. She couldn't read it. Didn't matter. She signed anyway. Her name looked strange. Broken. Not hers. Marco grabbed the papers. Folded them. Put them away. No thank you. No sorry. Nothing. "Leave now," Margaret said. "Your boxes are labeled. Don't take anything that isn't yours." "That house..." Lucia's voice was barely there. "I made it a home." "It's in my name," Marco said. "Always was. You have no claim." Ria stepped closer. "Mom, seriously. Everyone's uncomfortable. Just leave." "Yeah," Lucas said. "This is awkward." Monica laughed again. High. Cruel. Lucia looked at them. Her babies. She carried them. Fed them. Loved them. They looked at her like trash. "I loved you," she whispered. To all of them. "So much." "Not enough," Marco said. He pulled Margaret close. Kissed her. Right there. In front of Lucia. In front of everyone. Some people gasped. Others cheered. Lucia's feet moved. One step. Another. Through the crowd. Out the door. Rain. Heavy and cold. It soaked her dress in seconds. The special dress. Ruined now. She walked. Didn't know where. Her feet hurt in the heels but she kept going. Past houses with warm lights. Families inside. Real families. The tears came. Hot against her cold face. Her whole body shook. Remember when Ria took her first steps? Right into Lucia's arms. Lucia cried then too. Happy tears. Remember when Lucas learned to ride a bike? He fell. Scraped his knee. Lucia held him. Kissed it better. Remember when Monica drew that picture in kindergarten? Four stick figures holding hands. "That's us, Mommy. Our family." Gone. All of it. She fell. Her knees hit wet concrete. Hands in dirty water. She didn't get up. Couldn't. Thunder. Lightning. The sky was angry. Like her insides. Her phone buzzed. She pulled it out. Message from Marco. "Don't contact the children. Don't contact me. Move on." Move on. Like it was easy. Like she could just forget. Another message. Ria. "Mom, you're so dramatic. We're all happier without you. Accept it." The phone slipped from her hand. Fell into water. Screen went black. She stayed there. On her knees. Water soaking through her dress to her skin. Cold. So cold. Cars passed. No one stopped. She was nothing. Nobody wanted her. Not her husband. Not her children. Nobody. The necklace. She grabbed it. The silver one Marco gave her. Twenty years ago. When he said he loved her. When he promised forever. Lies. She ripped it off. The chain broke. She threw it into the street. Her makeup ran down her face in black streaks. Her hair stuck to her cheeks. Her dress clung heavy to her body. She tried to stand. Her legs wouldn't work right. They shook. Weak. Finally up. Barely. She looked back at the ballroom. The lights still glowed. Music still played. They were still celebrating. Without her. Celebrating her ending. A sound came from her throat. Half laugh. Half sob. Wrong. Broken. She turned away. Started walking again. Water in her shoes. Each step hurt. Where was she going? Didn't matter. She had nowhere. No home. Marco took it. No family. They chose Margaret. No money. Everything was in Marco's name. Nothing. She had nothing. The street blurred. More tears. Or maybe just the water running into her eyes. Remember their wedding day? Marco said she was beautiful. He said he'd never leave. He promised. Liar. Remember Ria's birth? Sixteen hours of labor. Worth it. Every second. To hold her baby. That baby just told her to leave. Remember Lucas's first word? Mama. He said mama. He reached for her. That boy said everyone knew except her. Like she was stupid. Remember Monica's first day of school? She cried. Didn't want Lucia to go. Held onto her leg. That girl laughed at her. In front of everyone. How? How did they all stop loving her? When did it happen? Was she blind? Stupid? Was she really that bad? Her chest hurt. Actual physical pain. Like something inside was tearing apart. She stopped walking. Middle of the sidewalk. Water pooled around her feet. A woman passed by. Looked at her. Looked away quick. Kept walking. Another person. A man. He crossed the street to avoid her. She was that woman now. The one people avoided. The one they pitied. The one they whispered about. Did you hear? Her husband left her at their anniversary party. For a younger woman. Even her kids don't want her. Poor thing. She didn't want pity. She wanted her life back. Her family. Her home. Her heart. But it was gone. All of it. She started walking again. Had to keep moving. If she stopped she might never start again. The water kept falling. Getting harder. Heavier. Her whole body was numb now. From cold. From pain. From everything. Somewhere a dog barked. A car horn honked. Normal sounds. Normal night. For everyone else. For her, everything ended. She thought about going back. Begging. Maybe if she said sorry. Maybe if she promised to change. Be better. Be whatever Marco wanted. No. She saw his face. Cold. Done with her. She saw Margaret. Smiling. Winning. She saw her children. Looking at her like she was nothing. They didn't want her back. They wanted her gone. She was gone now. Walking in the dark. In the rain. Alone. Her shoes rubbed blisters into her feet. She took them off. Held them in one hand. Kept walking barefoot. The concrete was rough. Cold. Hurt her feet. Good. The pain was good. It meant she was still real. Still here. Still something. Even if that something was broken. She passed a store window. Saw her reflection. Didn't recognize herself. Hair wild. Face streaked. Dress hanging off her body. She looked destroyed. She was destroyed. Somewhere behind her the party continued. Marco and Margaret probably dancing now. Her children probably eating cake. Laughing. Happy. Without her. Like she never mattered at all. The thought made her stomach turn. She bent over. Nothing came up. Just dry heaving. Her body trying to reject reality. She straightened up. Kept walking. Had to keep walking. Didn't know where. Didn't know why. Just knew she couldn't stop. Because if she stopped, if she stood still, she might break into pieces so small no one could ever put her back together. So she walked. Alone. Barefoot. In the rain that wouldn't stop falling. Chapter 2 Lucia didn't plan to walk to the bridge. Her feet just took her there. The river below was black. Angry. Water rushing fast and loud. She gripped the railing. Metal cold. Wet. Slippery. How did she get here? Just walking. Walking. Then the bridge. The water below looked like it could swallow everything. All the hurt. All the pain. Her phone buzzed. Marco. "Where are you? People are asking questions. You're embarrassing me." She stared at the screen. Her fingers shook. Embarrassing him. Another buzz. "Answer me, Lucia. Don't make this worse than it already is." She didn't respond. Her phone kept buzzing. Message after message. "If you're trying to get attention, it won't work. I'm done with your drama. Answer me now." "You're being childish." "Grow up, Lucia." "Think about the children. You're embarrassing them too." The children. But Marco was worried about embarrassing them? She looked at the railing. At the gap between the bars. No job. She stopped working when Ria was born. Marco said they didn't need her income. Said she should focus on the family. So she did. No career. No money of her own. Nothing. Where was she supposed to go? The house was Margaret's. Everything in Marco's name. Her friends? Couple friends. Marco's work friends and their wives. They'd pick his side. Her family? Her parents died five years ago. Car accident. She had no siblings. No one. The river kept rushing below. Her phone buzzed again. "Fine. Don't answer. But you're signing more papers tomorrow. My lawyer will contact you. Don't make this difficult." She turned the phone off. Shoved it in her pocket. Before Marco, there was someone else. Not a boyfriend. A friend. Alexander. Alex. Her best friend since she was seven. They grew up on the same street. Rode bikes together. Did homework together. Told each other everything. When she got engaged to Marco, Alex stopped talking to her. Just like that. One day they were best friends. The next day he was gone. She tried calling. Texting. He never answered. That was eighteen years ago. She hadn't seen him since. Another person who left her. Who would want her now? No job. No skills. No money. Three kids who hated her. No one. She climbed onto the first bar of the railing. Her bare feet slipped. She gripped tighter. The water looked closer. Darker. Her heart pounded against her ribs. Ria with tiny fingers wrapped around her thumb. Lucia used to sing lullabies. Made up songs. That baby told her to leave tonight. Lucas scared of shadows. Loud noises. Dogs. Lucia held him through it all. That boy said everyone knew Marco was unhappy. Except stupid Lucia. Monica. Pink and screaming and perfect when she was born. That girl laughed when Lucia signed the divorce papers. How did she lose them? The rain fell harder. Her dress stuck to her skin. Heavy. She climbed higher. Second bar. Her feet barely fit. She wobbled. The water roared below. What would happen if she jumped? Marco would be relieved. No messy divorce. He'd comfort Margaret. Play the grieving husband. Poor Marco. So tragic. The kids would be fine. They had Margaret. They didn't need Lucia. Nobody did. What was the point? Get a job at a store? Rent a tiny apartment? Start over? Her bones hurt. Her heart hurt. Everything hurt. Maybe it was easier to just stop. She looked down at the water. It didn't look scary anymore. It looked peaceful. Final. She let go with one hand. Held on with just the other. The wind pushed against her. She closed her eyes. Took a breath. Sorry, Mom. Sorry, Dad. She let go with the other hand. For a second she just stood there. Balanced. Then her foot slipped. Wet metal. No grip. She was falling. No. Wait. Her arms flailed. Reaching for anything. Just air. The water rushed up. Wrong wrong wrong. She wanted to scream but her throat closed. Falling. Fast. A sound behind her. Footsteps? Running? She didn't have time to look. The wind howled in her ears. Or was that her own breath? Her own terror? Faster. The water below black and waiting. Her dress whipped around her legs. Her hair flew into her face. This was it. Then something grabbed her arm. Hard. A hand. Strong fingers wrapped around her wrist. Squeezed. Held tight. The falling stopped. She hung there. One arm stretched up. The other dangling. Body swinging over the water. The hand pulled. She rose a little. But her wrist was slippery. Wet from the rain. The grip started to slide. No no no. She swung her other arm up. Desperate. Clawing at air. The hand adjusted. Grabbed tighter. Different angle now. Both hands gripping her arm. Pulling. Her shoulder burned. Felt like it might rip out of the socket. But she was rising. Inch by inch. Thunder cracked overhead. Lightning lit up the sky for a second. In that flash she saw the water below. Close. So close. Her feet kicked. Found nothing. Just empty space. The hand kept pulling. Strong. Steady. Not letting go. She scrambled with her feet. Finally touched the railing. Cold metal agai nst her toes. She pushed. The hand pulled. Then she was over. Back on the bridge. She collapsed. Hands and knees on wet concrete. Gasping. Shaking. The hand stayed on her shoulder. Steady. Warm despite everything. Chapter 3 Lucia looked up. Rain poured down his face. Dark hair plastered to his forehead. But those eyes. Brown. Familiar. "Alex?" Her voice came out hoarse. "It's me." He knelt beside her on the wet concrete. "You're okay now." Alexander Kane. Her best friend. The one who vanished eighteen years ago. Here. Saving her. She couldn't process it. Her brain felt foggy. "Can you stand?" he asked. She didn't know. Could she? He helped her up. Her legs shook. He wrapped an arm around her waist. "My car is just over there." He pointed. "Let me take you somewhere dry." She nodded. Couldn't speak. He guided her across the bridge. Each step felt wrong. Like she shouldn't be walking. Shouldn't be breathing. His car was black. Expensive looking. He opened the passenger door. Helped her inside. The seat was leather. Soft. She sank into it. He got in the driver's side. Started the engine. Heat blasted from the vents. "Where do you live?" he asked. "I'll take you home." Home. The word stabbed. "I can't." The words stuck. "Marco. He. The house." She couldn't finish. Alex looked at her. At her ruined dress. Her bare feet. Her destroyed face. "Okay," he said quietly. "You'll come to my place then." She wanted to say no. But where would she go? So she said nothing. He drove. She stared out the window. Buildings passed. Lights blurred. They drove for twenty minutes. Then he turned onto a long driveway. Trees lined both sides. Tall. The driveway went on forever. Then she saw it. A mansion. Actual mansion with columns and big windows and gardens. "You live here?" The words came out small. "Yeah." He parked in front of wide stone steps. "Come on." The front door was huge. Wood with carvings. He pushed it open. Inside was. She didn't have words. Marble floors. A staircase that curved up. Paintings. A chandelier hanging from the ceiling. "This way." Alex led her through hallways. Past rooms she couldn't look at properly. Her mind was too tired. He stopped at a door. Opened it. "Guest room. The bathroom is through there." He pointed. "Take a hot shower. I'll find you something to wear." She walked in. The room was bigger than the bedroom she used to have. Used to. Past tense. The bed had white sheets. Fluffy pillows. "Lucia." Alex's voice made her turn. "You're safe here. Okay?" He left. Closed the door. She stood there. Dripping water on expensive carpet. The bathroom. Right. She walked through the door. Marble everywhere. A tub big enough to swim in. A shower with glass walls. She turned on the water. Steam filled the space. She peeled off her dress. It fell in a wet heap. She stepped into the shower. The water burned her skin. She didn't care. She stood under the spray until her fingers pruned. When she got out, there were towels. Big. Soft. White. And clothes on the counter. A t-shirt. Sweatpants. Too big for her. Must be Alex's. She put them on. Rolled up the pants. Back in the bedroom, she sat on the edge of the bed. Stared at her hands. A knock on the door. "Come in," she said. Alex walked in with a tray. A mug. Steam rising from it. "Tea," he said. "Chamomile. My daughter swears by it." Daughter. Alex had a daughter. Eighteen years. People had whole lives in that time. "Thank you." She took the mug. Wrapped her hands around it. He sat in a chair across from the bed. "Do you want to talk about it?" "Marco left me." The words tumbled out. "Tonight. At our anniversary party. In front of everyone. He's been with someone else for two years. The kids knew. They wanted him to leave me." Saying it made it real. Made it hurt more. "I'm sorry," Alex said. "Why were you on that bridge?" she asked. He was quiet for a moment. "I was driving home. Saw someone on the railing. I stopped." "You didn't know it was me?" "Not until I grabbed you." He leaned forward. "Lucia, what were you doing?" She couldn't answer that. "I didn't know where else to go," she whispered instead. "You can stay here. As long as you need." "I can't." "Why not?" Because she'd already taken too much from people. Because she was a burden. "Stay," Alex said. "At least for a week. Figure out your next steps." A week. Then what? But she nodded. "Try to sleep," Alex said. He stood. Walked to the door. "I'm down the hall if you need anything." He left. She put the mug on the nightstand. Lay down. Pulled the covers up. The sheets smelled clean. Fresh. Nothing like before. She closed her eyes. Didn't think she'd sleep. But exhaustion pulled her under anyway. When she woke, sunlight streamed through the windows. Bright. Harsh. For a second she didn't know where she was. Then it all came back. She sat up. Her body ached. Her head pounded. A clock on the nightstand said 9:47. Her phone. Where was her phone? She found it on the dresser. Alex must have brought it in. She turned it on. Messages flooded in. Marco. Seventeen of them. She scrolled past those. Then she saw one from an unknown number. She opened it. "Hi Lucia! It's Margaret. Marco gave me your number. Hope you don't mind! Quick question, where do you keep your face products? I want to try your routine. Your skin always looked so glowy!" Lucia stared at the screen. Face products? She hadn't used face products in years. Just soap. Water. Whatever was cheap at the store. But Margaret thought. Margaret assumed. Another message came through. "Also, do you have a specific brand for your hair? It always looked so shiny!" Shiny. Lucia touched her hair. Dry. Frizzy. Damaged from years of cheap shampoo. She wanted to throw the phone. Wanted to scream. But she did nothing. Just turned the phone off. Put it back on the dresser. A knock on the door. "Come in," she said. The door burst open. A girl bounced in. Curly dark hair. Big smile. Energy radiating off her. "Hi! You're awake! Dad said not to bother you but I couldn't wait anymore. I'm Lena!" Lena. Alex's daughter. "Hi," Lucia managed. "Dad said you're staying with us for a bit. That's so cool. We never have guests. Well, we do but they're boring business people. You're different. I can tell." The girl talked fast. Bright. Bubbly. "I'm Lucia," she said. "I know! Dad told me. He said you were friends a long time ago. Like before I was born." Lena sat on the edge of the bed. Uninvited but somehow not intrusive. "How old are you?" Lucia asked. "Fifteen. Well, fifteen and a half." Same age as Lucas. The thought stabbed. "Are you okay?" Lena's smile faded. "You look sad." "I'm fine," Lucia lied. "Dad says that too. When he's not fine. Adults always say they're fine." Smart kid. "I have kids," Lucia said. Didn't know why she said it. "Three of them." "Cool! Where are they?" "They don't want me." Lena's face scrunched up. "That's stupid. Kids always want their moms." If only. "My mom died," Lena said. Casual. "Cancer. I was five. I barely remember her." "I'm sorry." "It's okay. I mean it's not. But I'm okay. Dad made sure." Lena picked at the blanket. "He's really good at taking care of people. Even when he's sad. He was really sad after Mom died." Ten years. Alex's wife died ten years ago. "You live in this huge place," Lucia said. "Just the two of you?" "Yep. Well, and the staff. Maria cooks. Roberto does the gardens." Lena shrugged. "It's a lot of space. Gets lonely sometimes. But Dad works a lot. Building companies. I don't really get it. Just know he's really rich." Extremely wealthy. Looking around, it was obvious. "Must be nice," Lucia said. "Sometimes." Lena's smile came back. "Other times it's weird. People at school treat me different. They want to be my friend because of Dad's money. Not because they like me." "That sounds hard." "It is. But you learn who's real and who's fake pretty fast." Lena stood. "Anyway! Dad said to tell you breakfast is ready when you want." Lucia looked at the clock. Almost ten. "Come down when you're ready!" Lena headed for the door. Turned back. "I'm really glad you're here. The house feels less empty." She left. Lucia got out of bed. Found the bathroom again. Splashed water on her face. Looked in the mirror. Her eyes were puffy. Red. Her face was pale. She looked like a ghost. Stop it. She went downstairs. Followed the sound of voices. The kitchen was huge. White cabinets. Marble counters. An island in the middle. Alex stood at the stove. Lena sat on a stool. They were laughing about something. They looked happy. She stood in the doorway. Suddenly feeling like an intruder. Alex saw her. "Hey. You're up. Hungry?" "I don't know," she said honestly. "Well, I made eggs. And toast. And bacon. And pancakes because Lena insisted." "I always insist," Lena said. "Pancakes are life." Lucia sat on a stool. Alex put a plate in front of her. But she picked up a fork. Took a bite. It tasted like nothing. But she chewed. Swallowed. "So," Alex said. Leaning against the counter. "You can stay here. Week or so. Figure out what you want to do next." Lucia's hands tightened around the fork. "I can't pay you." "I'm not asking you to." Her throat closed up. "I don't have anything." "Then stay until you do." Alex's voice was gentle. "No pressure." Lena grabbed her arm. "Please stay! I've always wanted another girl in this house." Something in Lucia's chest cracked. This girl. This bright girl who didn't know her. Who had no reason to want her here. But she did. "Okay," Lucia whispered. "Great!" Lena squeezed her arm. "This is going to be so fun!" Fun. When was the last time Lucia had fun? She couldn't remember. Alex smiled at her. Small. Understanding. For the first time since Marco walked in with Margaret, something other than pain settled in her chest. Not hope. Not quite. But possibility. Maybe. Chapter 4 Alex stood in his office. Door closed. Locked. He stared at the monitor on his desk. Security footage from the guest room hallway. Lucia was still asleep. He rubbed his face. Hadn't slept. Just watched. Made sure she didn't leave. Didn't hurt herself. His phone buzzed. Thomas. His private investigator. "Confirmed. Marco Lewis filed divorce papers this morning. Moving fast." Alex's jaw clenched. Of course. Lock everything down before Lucia could think straight. He typed back. "Keep monitoring. I want to know everything." He put the phone down. Looked at the monitor again. Lucia. Thirty-three years he'd loved her. Thirty-three years of watching from the shadows. He was seven when he met her. She was seven too. First day of second grade. New kid. Poor kid. His clothes were too big. Hand-me-downs from his older cousin. The other kids laughed. Called him trash. Said he smelled. Then Lucia stood up. Tiny thing with wild hair and a voice that didn't match her size. "Shut up. All of you. He's new and you're being mean." She sat next to him that day. Every day after that. Her family had money. Big house. Nice cars. But she never cared that he had nothing. They were inseparable. Did everything together. Then high school happened. Sixteen years old. She was laughing at something stupid he said. He looked at her and. Oh. Oh no. He fell in love with her that day. Never told her. How could he? She was Lucia Hart. Beautiful. Smart. Rich family. He was Alex Kane. Poor kid with holes in his shoes and a drunk father. So he stayed quiet. Stayed her best friend. Died a little every time she talked about other boys. Then college. Marco showed up. Marco with his car and his clothes and his confidence. Marco who could give her everything Alex couldn't. She fell for him. Fast. Talked about him constantly. Alex listened. Smiled. Pretended his heart wasn't breaking. When she got engaged, he couldn't anymore. Couldn't watch her marry someone else. So he left. Changed his number. Moved cities. Built his company from nothing. Turned heartbreak into empire. And he watched her. Always. Hired Thomas five years after her wedding. Just to check. Make sure she was okay. Reports came. Photos. Updates. Lucia looked content. Three kids. Nice house. He told himself that was enough. She was happy. That mattered. But he kept the reports coming. Couldn't stop. Couldn't let go. Then last week Thomas called. "You need to see this." Photos of Marco. With Margaret. Coming out of hotels. Kissing in parking lots. "How long?" Alex asked. "Two years. Maybe more." His blood boiled. "Find out everything. I want dates. Times. Proof." Thomas delivered. Marco was planning to leave Lucia. Their anniversary party. Public humiliation. Alex tried to stop it. Drove to the venue. But he was too late. People were leaving. Talking. Gossiping. "Did you see her face?" "So embarrassing." He grabbed someone. "Where did Lucia go?" "She ran out. In the rain." He searched. Drove through streets. Panicking. Then he saw her. On the bridge. Climbing the railing. His heart stopped. He ran. Grabbed her wrist just as she fell. And now she was here. In his house. A second chance. He didn't deserve it. But he had her here. That's what mattered. A knock on his office door. "Dad?" Lena. He unlocked the door. She walked in. Looked at him. "You didn't sleep," she said. "I'm fine." "You always say that." She sat across from his desk. "We need to talk about Lucia." "What about her?" "I saw your face this morning. When you looked at her. I've never seen you look at anyone like that. Not even Mom." Alex's chest tightened. "Lena." "Tell me the truth. Who is she?" He sat down. "We were friends. I told you that." "Friends don't look at each other the way you looked at her." Smart kid. Too smart. "She was my best friend. Growing up." "And?" "And I fell in love with her. In high school." Lena leaned forward. "Did you tell her?" "No." "Why not?" "Because I was poor. She was rich. I had nothing." "That's stupid." "Maybe. But that's how it felt." Alex looked at his hands. "Then she met Marco in college. He had everything I didn't." "So you left." "Yeah." "And now she's here." "Yeah." "Do you still love her?" The question hung there. Heavy. "Yeah," Alex whispered. "I never stopped." Lena was quiet. Then. "How did you find her last night? On that bridge?" Alex went cold. "What?" "You just happened to be driving by? That's a pretty big coincidence, Dad." He couldn't lie to her. "I've been keeping track of her. For years. Through an investigator." Lena's eyes widened. "You've been stalking her?" "Not stalking. Making sure she was okay." "Dad. That's literally stalking." "I know. I know it sounds bad. But I needed to know she was safe." "And when you found out about Marco cheating?" "I tried to stop it. Tried to get there before he humiliated her. But I was too late." "So you went looking for her." "Thomas said she left the party. I drove around. Then I saw her on the bridge." Lena stood. Walked to the window. "This is a lot, Dad." "I know." "Does she know? About the investigator? About you watching her?" "No. And she can't know. Not now." "You have to tell her eventually." "I know." "If she finds out on her own, she'll hate you." "I know that too." Alex stood. Walked over to his daughter. "But right now, she needs stability. Not more chaos. Not more betrayal." "You think she'll see it as betrayal?" "Probably." "Do you think she ever loved you? Back then?" The question hurt. He'd asked himself that a thousand times. "I don't know. She never said anything. Never gave any sign." "Or maybe she did love you and you were both too scared to say it." Worse thought. That they could have had something. That he'd wasted years because he was a coward. "Doesn't matter now," Alex said. "She's healing. That's important." "When are you going to tell her?" Lena asked. "About your feelings? About everything?" "Not now." "When?" "I don't know. When she's stronger." "What if she's never ready?" "Then I'll keep it to myself. Like I have for thirty-three years." Lena turned to face him. "That's sad, Dad." "Maybe. But her happiness matters more." "Mom knew, didn't she? About Lucia?" Alex nodded. "Yeah. Sandra knew." "Did she mind?" "She said she didn't. Said she understood. That people carry ghosts. That loving someone unavailable doesn't mean you can't love someone else." "Do you think she was happy? With you?" "I hope so. I tried to make her happy. I really did love her, Lena. Your mom was incredible. Patient. Kind." "But?" "But she wasn't Lucia." The words came out broken. "And that's not fair. To her memory. To you. But it's the truth." Lena walked over. Hugged him. "I'm not mad, Dad. I just want you to be happy. Really happy." "I am happy. I have you." "You know what I mean." He did. "Give it time," he said. "Let Lucia heal. Then maybe." "Promise me you'll tell her. Eventually. About everything." "Lena." "Promise me, Dad. She deserves the truth." He closed his eyes. "I promise. When the time is right." "Good." She pulled back. "Now go shower. You smell like stress." He laughed. First real laugh in days. "I'm serious. Go. I'll make sure Lucia has everything she needs." "Don't tell her anything." "I won't. But you will. Soon." She left. Alex walked back to his desk. Looked at the monitor. Lucia was awake. Sitting on the edge of the bed. Looking lost. His heart ached. Thirty-three years he'd loved her. Thirty-three years of silence. Maybe Lena was right. Maybe he needed to tell her. But not now. Not when she was broken. He'd wait. Be patient. Be there. And hope. Hope that eventually she might see him as more than just her childhood friend who saved her life. Hope that eventually she might love him back. But even if she didn't. He'd still be here. Still protect her. Because that's what you did when you loved someone. You stayed. Even when it hurt. Even when it was hopeless. You stayed. Chapter 5 Lucia sat on the bed. Her phone in her hand. Staring at the screen. She shouldn't do this. She knew she shouldn't. But her fingers moved anyway. Opening Instagram. Typing in Ria's username. The profile loaded. Public. Of course. Photos filled the screen. Recent ones. From yesterday. Her breath caught. There. A video. Posted three hours ago. She clicked it. Laughter came first. Happy laughter. Then the image loaded. Marco. Margaret. And all three kids. Sitting around a table. Pizza boxes open. Everyone smiling. "Say hi to everyone!" Ria's voice. She was recording. "Hi!" Monica waved at the camera. Big smile. Lucas gave a thumbs up. Grinning. Margaret leaned into Marco. "We're having the best family night!" Family night. Lucia's hands shook. "Margaret makes the best homemade cookies," Monica said. "Way better than Mom's store bought ones." The words stabbed. "And she actually listens when we talk," Ria added. "Like really listens. Not just pretending while looking at her phone." Lucia never looked at her phone during conversations. Never. "Plus she's cool," Lucas said. "She gets us. You know?" Margaret laughed. Kissed Marco's cheek. "These kids are amazing. I'm so lucky." The video ended. Lucia stared at the black screen. Her reflection stared back. Pale. Hollow. She scrolled down. More photos. Margaret braiding Monica's hair. Margaret and Ria shopping. Matching bags. Lucas teaching Margaret how to play video games. All posted today. Captions about how wonderful Margaret was. Not one mention of Lucia. Her chest hurt. Like something inside was tearing. She kept scrolling. Couldn't stop. Another video. Margaret's account. "My new family!" Margaret's voice. Cheerful. Sweet. The camera panned. Marco cooking. The kids setting the table. "I've always wanted kids," Margaret said. "And now I have three perfect ones. Dreams really do come true!" Lucia's phone slipped from her fingers. Fell onto the bed. She couldn't breathe. They replaced her. Two days. Two days and they'd already replaced her. A sound came from her throat. Half sob. Half scream. She grabbed a pillow. Pressed it to her face. Maybe they were right. Maybe she was a bad mother. Maybe Margaret was better. No. No. But look at them. Look how happy they were. The tears came. Loud. Ugly. A knock on the door. Soft. She didn't answer. The door opened anyway. "Lucia?" Alex. She couldn't look at him. "Hey." His voice got closer. "What happened?" She shook her head. The bed dipped. He sat beside her. "Talk to me," he said. She lowered the pillow. Her face was wet. "I looked at their social media," she whispered. "The kids." Alex's jaw tightened. "What did you see?" "They're with Marco. And her. Margaret. They posted videos. They look. They look so." She couldn't say it. Alex picked up her phone. Looked at the screen. His face went hard. "This is cruel," he said. "Maybe it's true." The words came out broken. "Maybe I was a terrible mother. Maybe they're better off." "Stop." "Look at them, Alex. They don't miss me at all." "They're kids being manipulated." "They chose her." "They chose what's easier. That doesn't make you bad." Lucia pulled her knees to her chest. "I should call them. Maybe if I just. If I explain." "Explain what? They don't want to hear it." The bluntness hurt. But it was true. She grabbed her phone. Opened it. Stared at Monica's number. What would she even say? Please love me again? Please remember I'm your mother? Her finger hovered over the call button. "Don't," Alex said quietly. She put the phone down. Face down. Alex was quiet. Then he stood. Walked to the window. "I have an idea," he said. "But you'll probably think I'm insane." She looked up. "What?" He turned to face her. Hesitated. Like he was debating something. "Disappear," he finally said. "What?" "Leave. Go somewhere far. Reinvent yourself. Come back when you're ready." "I can't just leave." "Why not? What's keeping you here?" The question hung there. What was keeping her? Nothing. Nobody wanted her here. "Where would I even go?" she asked. Alex took a breath. "Germany. I have a villa there. Countryside. Quiet. You could stay as long as you need." Germany. Another country. "And do what?" "Learn. Transform." He walked back over. Sat on the bed again. "I can teach you about business. Finance. How money works. You could come back different. Stronger." "Why would I need to know about business?" Alex hesitated again. Like he was afraid to tell her. "Marco is hiding assets offshore," he finally said. Lucia stared at him. "What?" "I had Thomas dig deeper. Marco has accounts in the Cayman Islands. Properties under shell companies. He's been planning this." Her stomach turned. "How long?" "At least five years." Five years. "The affair. The quick wedding. It's all calculated." Alex's voice was steady. "He wants to marry Margaret fast. Lock everything down before you can do anything." "He's going to marry her?" "Already applied for the license. Wedding next month." Next month. Their divorce wasn't even final. "How do you know all this?" she asked. "Thomas is good at his job." "You've been investigating Marco?" "Yes." She should be angry. Should feel violated. But she just felt. Tired. "What else?" "Marco's company. I own shares. Thirty percent." Lucia looked at him. "Thirty?" "I'm the second largest shareholder. Marco doesn't know. The shares are under a holding company." "Why are you telling me this?" Alex looked down at his hands. "Because I can help you. If you want. I can give you leverage. Information. Everything you need to fight back." Fight back. She'd never fought back against anything. "I don't know how to fight," she said. "I'll teach you." "In Germany." "Yes." She stood up. Walked to the window. Looked out at the gardens. Six months in another country. Learning things she didn't understand. Coming back. For what? "What if I come back and nothing changes?" she asked. "What if I'm still nobody? What if they still don't want me?" "Then at least you'll be somebody who chose to fight." "But what if I don't want to fight? What if I just want my kids back?" The words cracked on the way out. Alex stood. Walked over. Stood beside her. "You can't make people love you," he said quietly. "Not even your kids. But you can make them respect you. You can make them regret what they did." "Is that enough?" "I don't know. But it's better than this." She looked at him. Really looked. He looked scared. Like he was afraid she'd say no. Like this mattered to him more than he was saying. "Why do you care so much?" she asked. He opened his mouth. Closed it. Looked away. "Because you deserve better," he finally said. "You always did." The air between them felt charged. "If I do this," she said slowly. "If I go. What happens to me?" "What do you mean?" "I'll be alone. In a foreign country. Learning things I don't understand. What if I can't do it? What if I fail?" "You won't." "You don't know that." "No. But I believe it." She wanted to believe it too. But believing meant hoping. And hoping meant risking more pain. "I'm scared," she whispered. "I know." "What if they're right about me? What if I really am that terrible?" "You're not." "How do you know?" "Because I've known you for thirty-three years. And you've never been terrible. Not once." The words hit something in her chest. She looked back out the window. The sun was setting. Orange and pink. Tomorrow she could leave. Start over. Become someone new. Or she could stay. Keep crying. Keep checking their social media. Keep hurting. She thought about Monica's laugh in that video. Lucas's smile. Ria's happiness. They were fine without her. Better even. Something inside her shifted. Hardened. "Okay," she said. "Okay?" "Yeah. Germany. All of it." Alex's face changed. Relief. "You won't regret this." "I already regret everything else." He almost smiled. She looked down at her phone. Still on the bed. Still showing her kids with someone else. "I want them to see," she said. Voice quiet. "I want them to see me different. Strong. Someone they can't ignore." "They will." "And Marco. I want him to know he made a mistake." "He will." She didn't know if she believed him. But she wanted to. "When do we leave?" she asked. "Two days. I need to arrange some things first." Two days. "What about Lena?" "She's excited. Already packing." Of course she was. Lucia picked up her phone. Looked at it one last time. Then she deleted Instagram. Done watching. Done hurting. "Teach me everything," she said. Looking at Alex. "I want to know how to win." "I will." Outside, the sun disappeared. Darkness came. But for the first time in days, Lucia didn't feel afraid of it. She felt ready for it.
